As I walked into the primary school, I looked down at my new black shoes, I stood at Mrs. Blackstone’s door. Before I tried the great escape, the door opened. “We’ve been waiting for you!” Mrs. Blackstone, my new fifth grade teacher, said loudly. With a smile my mom walked away and I was left taking center stage in front of a group of students.
Over the next few days, Mrs. Blackstone made it her job to find me a new best friend. During history lessons, when I didn’t want to speak in front of the class, she’d not only call on me but have me stand up to say something to my classmates.
One spring afternoon, Mrs. Blackstone asked me to stay after class. “I’d like to speak with you, Amanda.” My mind raced. Had I got a bad grade? Had I hurt anyone’s feelings? “Are you enjoying your new school?” She sat comfortably behind her desk. “I want to tell you something, between you and me, not to be shared with anyone else.” She continued, “I see something special in you. The way you communicate with others, and the kindness you show — I think you have great potential to be something important.” I listened carefully to every word. “I have been a teacher for over twenty-five years; I can see it. But you must believe in yourself. That’s very important. Remember that and you’ll go far,” she said.
Her voice was music to my ears that day. I walked out of her office, not staring at my shoes, but looking straight ahead with my head high. My teacher saw something special in me! Years later, her words still remain inside of me.

Some universities in China and around the world are making changes to the ways in which they deliver liberal arts (文科) subjects, with some subjects being removed (去除). These changes have caused a lot of discussion in China with some questioning the long-term benefits of these subjects and others saying their removal is leading to a global reduction in the liberal arts.
Universities have the right and the responsibility to ensure their courses best equip their students to gain more chances in the job market. Education resources tend to be concentrated on science and engineering subjects that lead to better jobs, and this tendency (趋势) is becoming increasingly clear, driven by market demand.
Liberal arts subjects aim to improve life and society. In this sense, the more developed a society is, the more liberal arts are needed. Human development requires liberal arts that keep up with the times. Today, what we need is the kind of humanities (人文) and social sciences that can adapt to modern society, which is advancing in science and technology. Liberal arts must welcome the Internet, big data, AI, cloud computing, and so on. The change of liberal arts subjects in universities is unavoidable.
In modern university education, the humanities are increasingly serving as general education. Future-centered humanities education should not and cannot promise a clear path from specialization to a specific career as natural sciences might. Instead, it should focus on offering a liberal arts education that equips future scientists, technicians, and professionals with humanistic qualities. This education doesn’t provide specific job skills, but aims to cultivate (培养) citizens with critical thinking, cross-cultural awareness, and the ability to think on one’s own. Liberal arts should have the ability to provide effective “public products” for society. They are not material or technological products, but thoughts, discourses and theories.
28. Why are some liberal arts subjects removed?
A. They are difficult to master. B. Their benefits show slowly.
C. They need more resources. D. Their views are imaginary.
29. How can liberal arts subjects keep up with the times?
A. By providing hands-on chances. B. By focusing on practical topics.
C. By using popular academic terms. D. By opening doors to technologies.
30. Which of the following do liberal arts aim to cultivate?
A. Sense of humour. B. Independent thinking. C. Self-reflection ability. D. Self-learning ability.
31. What is the suitable title for the text?
A. Are liberal arts losing ground? B. Liberal arts: basis for sciences
C. Will liberal arts make changes? D. Liberal arts: searching for truth
D
It is widely known that sitting for long hours is unhealthy. Scientists say that sitting might not quite be “the new smoking”, but too much of it can still shorten your life.
We spend a lot of time sitting. Numbers of daily sitting hours for Americans vary, but some studies point out it can be as long as nine and a half hours. Studies suggest women sit less than men do, but most agree we all sit more than earlier generations did. Similar things are found around the world, including in Asian countries.
A 13-year study following 480,000 people in Paris found those who sit most of the work day had a 34% higher risk of dying from heart disease than those with less sedentary (久坐) jobs did — and a 16% higher risk of death. The American Heart Association notes that sitting too long raises the risk of developing heart disease, even for those who exercise regularly. Sitting for long periods has also been linked to lower back or knee pain. Studies show that sitting still for more than four hours can weaken leg strength and increase pressure on spinal discs (脊间盘). Besides, sitting burns very little energy. Over time, this inactive lifestyle can reduce your body’s ability to control blood sugar and break down fat, potentially leading to weight gain and raising diabetes (糖尿病) risk. In general, modern workers burn 100 fewer calories daily than 50 years ago. Beyond physical health, sitting also affects mental health. It increases the chances of sad feelings and anxiety.
To reduce the risks of a sedentary lifestyle, the key is to move more often. Make a habit of breaking up long periods of sitting; get up and move for a few minutes every half hour. Aim for at least 30 minutes of active movement every day, like a quick walk, dancing, or playing a sport. Also, small changes help a lot: climb the stairs, walk while talking on the phone, or have walking meetings with friends. By sitting less and moving more, you’ll increase your energy, improve your feelings, and protect your health for years to come.
32. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. People sit less now than in the past.
B. Women sit more than men on a daily basis.
C. Americans sit more than Asian people.
D. Long-time sitting is a worldwide problem.
33. What’s paragraph 3 mainly about in terms of long-time sitting?
A. The solutions. B. The causes. C. The results. D. The types.
34. What is the key to reducing the risks of long-time sitting?
A. More physical activity and less sitting. B. Exercising for one hour every weekend.
C. Avoiding sitting at work completely. D. More healthy foods to increase energy.
35. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To prove that sitting is more harmful than smoking.
B. To explain why people sit for longer hours than before.
C. To warn of long-time sitting’s risks and advise action.
D. To introduce the research findings on sedentary lifestyles.

Guiding Children in Choosing After-school Activities
Many children today face stress from school, friends, or competition. Nina Kaiser, a licensed psychologist based in San Francisco, reminds parents that after-school activities should not add more pressure. 36 . Kaiser points out, “Younger kids often try many activities because they are still finding out what they like — and that is normal.” So how can parents help their children choose the right activities?
To begin with, parents should allow children to join in the decision-making. 37 . When they feel that their voices are heard, they often show more energy and excitement toward the activity.
Next, it is necessary to value each child’s personal interests. Every child has different hobbies and talents (天资). If parents force them to do something they dislike, children may feel stressed or upset. 38 . This will make learning easier and more enjoyable.
39 . Sometimes children may want to give up on an activity. Parents do not need to decide right away. Instead, they should talk with the child, wait patiently, and think of possible changes. Through discussion, both sides can find a solution together.
Lastly, parents should avoid putting too much pressure. Not every child will find his or her passion (爱好) right away. It is normal for children to face difficulties at the beginning, especially when they are still learning. 40 .
A. What matters is to study something useful
B. Parents shouldn’t allow them to drop the activity
C. Another key point is to keep open communication
D. Instead, they should give children the chance to learn and grow
E. With patience and support, they will finally find what they love
F. Even younger kids can share their thoughts about what they enjoy
G. A better way is to choose an activity that fits their ability and interest

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Tim was a senior high school student who loved giving nicknames (绰号) to his classmates. However, almost all the nicknames he came up with were meant to mock laugh at his classmates. For example, he called Lisa “Big Glasses” just because she wore thick-framed glasses to see clearly. Mike, who was a little heavier than others, was given the nickname “Fatty” by Tim.
The classmates didn’t like Tim’s behavior at all. Lisa once told Tim sadly, “Please don’t call me ‘Big Glasses’ anymore. It really hurts my feelings.” Mike also warned Tim, “If you keep calling me ‘Fatty’, I won’t talk to you.” But Tim paid no attention to their words. He thought it was all in good fun and often laughed when he called others by those nicknames.
Gradually, no one wanted to hang out with Tim. During breaks, while other students were chatting and playing together in the classroom or on the playground, Tim always sat alone in his seat. Sometimes he tried to join a group of classmates, but they would simply walk away. Tim felt a bit lonely, but he still didn’t realize that his habit of giving bad nicknames was the reason.
One afternoon, Tim stayed in the classroom to finish his math homework. Sam, whom Tim regarded as his good friend, came in with two other boys. Tim didn’t make a sound, so they didn’t notice him. He heard Sam say, “Tim is so boring. He only knows how to give foolish nicknames to others. I call him ‘Nickname Freak’ behind his back.” The other boys laughed. Tim’s heart sank. He finally understood how hurtful those nicknames were and how impolite and disrespectful his behavior was.
