“I was moved by her kindness, and thought it would be great if she could speak,” Liu said, “so I decided to become a teacher for hearing-impaired students.”
At first, Liu almost gave up because of difficulties. She then thought about her neighbor and the pain on her face when she could not make people understand what she was trying to say. That made Liu stick to her dream of being a “special education” teacher and she succeeded.

Few words are spoken more often every day on the streets of Britain than “I’m sorry”. This phrase has become such a common response that it has taken on a lot of meanings.
Saying “Sorry” means to apologize. This is simple and easy to understand. We learn it both as a native speaker and as a student of foreign languages.
But in Britain, it takes on another meaning. It is a cultural expression. Imagine this: a man walks down the street, looking down at his phone. A woman is walking in the opposite direction, towards the man. She sees him, but she can’t get out of the way in time. The man bumps into the woman. Who should say sorry? Naturally, the man should say sorry, because it was he who wasn’t looking where he was going. Yet in Britain, it is common for both to apologize.
It is known that British people, like most people, do not enjoy conflict. So to quickly calm the situation, British people will apologize to each other.
Other times it may sound funny to hear “sorry”. Some of my friends say it at restaurants, as they ask the waiter, “Sorry, but can I order another drink?” It is not to apologize, but just to express that we need the waiter. In Britain, “sorry” doesn’t always mean exactly what you think.
9. According to the text, “saying sorry” is a cultural expression in ________.
A. the USA B. the UK C. the PRC D. the UN
10. Which picture can describe the situation in Paragraph 3?
A. B. C. D.
11. The restaurant example shows that “sorry” can be used to ________.
A. make an apology B. calm a situation down
C. explain what you’re thinking about D. ask a waiter to bring something
12. The text mainly talks about ________.
A. different meanings of “sorry”
B. traditional British manners
C. how to best catch others’ attention
D. a way out of a difficult situation
【答案】9. B 10. B 11. D 12. A

Take a pen and write the number 6174 on a piece of paper. It looks just like any other number, doesn’t it? But what if I told you that it was a magic number?
Do you think this is a joke? Well, let’s see the magic with a quick experiment.
Start with any four-digit (四位) number—just make sure that not all the digits are the same. For example, 1113 is suitable, but 1111 is not.
Now take 7173 as an example. Put the digits in the new order to make the smallest possible number : 1377. Then, the largest number: 7731.
Let’s subtract the smaller number from the larger number: 7731-1377=6354.
Go back to the second step and repeat the process:
6543-3456=3087 → 8730-0378=8352→ 8532-2358=6174
Ta-da!There you have it: 6174!
You can repeat this experiment with another number. What do you end up with? Is it 6174?
Kaprekar had always enjoyed playing with numbers, but when he showed the magic of 6174 at an international mathematics meeting, other mathematicians (数学家) didn’t roll out the red carpet. They thought it was a useless discovery and made fun of him. Yet to this day, no scientist can fully explain why this magic works.
Would you like to dive deeper? Try different numbers and see how many steps you need to get to 6174. Which number requires the most steps? How about the least?
13. Which of the following is suitable for the experiment?
A. 1111 B. 3333 C. 1117 D. 6666
14. If the number for the experiment is 2025, which of the following is the next step?
A. 5220-2520. B. 5220-0225. C. 2025-0252. D. 2025-0225.
15. What does the underlined part “roll out the red carpet” probably mean?
A. Show their opinions. B. Talk loudly.
C. Express their welcome. D. Understand clearly.
16. What does the writer think of this experiment?
A. It’s useless. B. It’s worth studying.
C. It’s explainable. D. It’s hard to carry out.
【答案】13. C 14. B 15. C 16. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了神奇数字6174的实验规则、推导过程及卡普雷卡尔的故事,并鼓励读者深入探索。
【13题详解】
根据文章第 3 段“Start with any four-digit (四位) number—just make sure that not all the digits are the same.”可知实验要求四位数字不能完全相同,1117 符合该条件。
【14题详解】
根据文章第 4 段“Put the digits in the new order to make the smallest possible number : 1377. Then, the largest number: 7731.”及第 5 段“Let’s subtract the smaller number from the larger number: 7731-1377=6354.”可知,2025重排后最大数为5220,最小数为0225,下一步操作为5220-0225。
【15题详解】
根据文章第 9 段“They thought it was a useless discovery and made fun of him.”可知,其他数学家嘲笑该发现,说明并未表示欢迎,可推知该短语意为“表达欢迎”。
【16题详解】
根据文章第 10 段“Would you like to dive deeper? Try different numbers and see how many steps you need to get to 6174.”可知,作者鼓励读者尝试不同数字,认为该实验值得深入研究。
第二节
阅读短文,从所给的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,其中有一个多余的选项。
An ecosystem (生态系统) includes all the living and non-living things in an area. Ecosystems can be of different sizes, from small ponds to large grasslands. Each ecosystem has a role to play and helps keep the balance among all its members.
____17____ It covers around 71% of the earth’s surface and produces about 70% of the earth’s oxygen. It holds plenty of water, and the water rises to the sky, falls onto the lands and then returns to the ocean. This goes on and on, so the ocean is just like the “heart” of the earth.
Wetlands only cover about 6% of the earth’s land area. ____18____ Plants in wetlands help get rid of pollution and make the water clean. Wetlands can also help prevent floods. During heavy rains, wetlands store water like giant sponges. They act like the “kidneys” of the earth.
Forests make up nearly a third of the earth’s land area. ____19____ They also trap pollution in their leaves and help clean the air. Therefore, people often call forests the “lungs” of the earth.
All different ecosystems on the earth are closely connected. ____20____ We should protect every ecosystem on our planet.
A. The ocean is a very large ecosystem on earth.
B. People can build more ecosystems to protect our earth.
C. Small changes in one place may influence the whole ecosystem.
D. But they are home to about 40% of the world’s plants and animals.
E. Plants there take in carbon dioxide from the air and produce oxygen.
【答案】17. A 18. D 19. E 20. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍地球上不同的生态系统,依次讲解海洋、湿地、森林这三类生态系统的特点与作用,最后说明各类生态系统紧密相连,呼吁人们保护生态系统。

后文提到它覆盖地球约71%的表面,产生大约70%的氧气,还介绍水循环,A选项“The ocean is a very large ecosystem on earth.”引出海洋这一生态系统,与下文内容呼应。
【18题详解】
前文说湿地仅占陆地面积的6%,D选项“But they are home to about 40% of the world’s plants and animals.”用But进行转折,表明虽然湿地面积小,却是大量动植物的家园,衔接上下文。
【19题详解】
前文讲述森林占陆地面积近三分之一,E选项“Plants there take in carbon dioxide from the air and produce oxygen.”介绍森林里植物吸收二氧化碳、制造氧气,对应后文森林被叫作“地球之肺“。
【20题详解】
前文表明地球上所有生态系统紧密相连,C选项“Small changes in one place may influence the whole ecosystem.”解释一处微小变化就可能影响整个生态系统,引出后文我们需要保护每一个生态系统。

阅读下面的短文,根据内容回答问题。
Back to My Hometown
I left my hometown ten years ago to study in a big city. Last month, I went back for the first time. I could not believe my eyes!
When I was young, my hometown was a small, quiet village. The roads were narrow and muddy (泥泞的). There were no streetlights, so it was very dark at night. Most families lived in old houses made of wood and mud. There was only one small shop in the whole village.
Now, everything has changed. The narrow roads have been replaced by wide, clean streets with bright streetlights. A new highway connects our village to the nearest city, so it now takes only 40 minutes by car—it used to take over two hours! Many families have moved into new brick (砖) houses. There are now several supermarkets, a small hospital, and even a new library.
The biggest change, however, is the people. In the past, most young people left the village to find work in big cities. Now, with the new highway and better living conditions, many have come back. My cousin, who used to work in a factory in Shenzhen, has returned and opened a small restaurant. “Life here is much better than before,” he told me. “And I can be with my family.”
Seeing all these changes, I felt both surprised and proud. Surprised because the changes are so big, and proud because my hometown has become such a wonderful place. Change is not just about new roads or buildings—it is about people having better lives.
41. How long did it use to take to reach the nearest city from the writer’s hometown?
___________________________________________________________________________
42. What new facilities (设施) does the village now have? (Give at least two examples.)
___________________________________________________________________________
43. Why have many young people come back to the village?
___________________________________________________________________________
44. Do you think the changes in the writer’s hometown are positive (积极的)? Why or why not? Write 30 words or more.
___________________________________________________________________________
【答案】41. It used to take over two hours. / Over two hours.
42. Supermarkets, a small hospital, and a new library. (至少两个)
43. Because of the new highway and better living conditions. / With the new highway and better living conditions, many young people have come back.
44. Yes, I think the changes are positive. First, the new roads and highway have made travel much easier and faster—it now takes only 40 minutes instead of over two hours. Second, people’s lives have improved—they live in new brick houses, have more shops and a hospital, and young people can come back to start businesses while staying with their families. These changes show that the village has developed in a good way.

Liu Lingli has been a teacher for hearing-impaired (听力受损的) children for 33 years. Her first communication with hearing-impaired people was with her neighbor, Mrs Wang. One day, when Liu was playing in her house, Mrs Wang used sign language to communicate with her. But Liu couldn’t understand. Mrs Wang’s husband told Liu that Mrs Wang wanted to make her a scarf.
Although she was only 18 at that time, she regarded the students as her children. Every day, she spent much time teaching them to speak. One of her students, Jiang Yan, said Liu would show over 100 times how to speak just one word. She also taught the students how to wash their faces and clothes, and clip their nails (剪指甲).
Liu Lingli tried her best to help them live better, too. With her help and encouragement, another student Liu Hanxiang could communicate normally with others. Liu Hanxiang learned dancing and is a member of an art group now.
Thanks to Liu’s devotion (奉献), more than 20 students have received higher education. “Whenever they tried to say ‘mom’ or ‘dad’ for the first time, I felt it was the sweetest sound in the world.” Liu Lingli said.

(D)
