Unit 4 Wonderful seasons
Lesson 5 Hit it big
I. Teaching Aims
1. Students can review and use the season words (spring, summer, autumn, winter) and the weather words (hot, cold, warm, cool, sunny, snowy, windy, rainy).
2. Students can answer the four questions in Activity 1 about their favourite season: "What's the weather like?" "What can I see?" "What do I like doing?" "What do I eat?"
3. Students can write two or three simple sentences, such as "My favourite season is summer. In summer, it's hot. I can swim.", to complete a season poster (Activity 2 and Activity 3).
4. Students can show their posters to the class and tell their classmates about their favourite season (Activity 4).
5. Students enjoy the beauty of the four seasons and are willing to share their ideas with others.
II. Key and Difficult Points
Key points: The season words and weather words; the key sentence patterns "My favourite season is ...", "In ..., it's ...", "I can ...".
Difficult points: Using the right adjectives to talk about the weather, and using "I can + verb phrase" correctly. Some students may find it hard to write two or three complete sentences about a season on their own.
III. Teaching Tools
The students' book (pp. 46-47), blackboard and chalk, season word cards and weather word cards, a sample season poster, coloured paper, crayons and coloured pens, scissors and glue, and a PPT (optional).
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Lead-in (5 mins)
The teacher shows the season word cards and asks "What's the weather like?" to help students say the four seasons and the weather words again.
The teacher shows a sample season poster and says "Look! This is my favourite season." to lead in the topic of today's lesson.
[Purpose] To review the season words and the weather words, and to get students ready for the poster-making task.
Step 2 Look and think (6 mins)
The teacher asks students to open the book to p. 46 and look at Activity 1.
Students read the four questions together: "What's the weather like?", "What can I see?", "What do I like doing?", "What do I eat?"
The teacher helps students understand each question with simple words and actions.
[Purpose] To help students know what they need to think about before making the poster.
Step 3 Answer and write (8 mins)
Students answer the four questions in their mind and then write the answers, like the example "Favourite season: summer. Weather: It's hot."
The teacher writes the key sentence patterns on the blackboard and asks a few students to say their answers aloud.
[Purpose] To practise saying and writing about the favourite season with the help of the key sentence patterns.
Step 4 Make the season poster (12 mins)
Students work in pairs or small groups and make their own season poster on coloured paper (Activity 3, p. 47).
They write the four parts on the poster: Weather, Activity, Food and Colour, and write "My favourite season: ___" in the middle.
The teacher walks around, helps the weaker students and checks their spelling.
[Purpose] To let students use the words and sentences they have learned to do a real task, and to develop their ability to work together.
Step 5 Show, tell and summary (9 mins)
Some groups show their posters to the class and say something like "My favourite season is summer. In summer, it's hot. I can swim ..." (Activity 4).
The teacher and other students listen and give praise.
The teacher sums up the four seasons and asks students to take the poster home and tell their family about it as homework.
[Purpose] To give students a chance to use the language in a real situation and to build their confidence in speaking.

六、教学反思
本课是单元综合输出课,学生借助四个问题基本能完成海报并用两三句话介绍自己最喜欢的季节,课堂气氛较好。不足之处:后进生对天气形容词与"can+动词短语"的搭配容易用错,部分小组制作耗时偏长、展示时不敢开口。下次应提前发放句型支架卡和半成品范例,控制好制作时间,并安排同桌先互说、再上台展示,降低开口难度。
