A home without barriers (障碍)
When you step into Yameng’s Home, a guesthouse in Qingdao, the first things that may catch your eye are a doll in a wheelchair and a three-legged cat named Joy walking around happily. This is a fully accessible (可进入的) guesthouse which is run by 29-year-old Cui Yameng.
During her university years, Cui travelled with disabled friends. She saw how a common object, like a small step or a narrow doorway could keep them from moving forward. It was then that Cui set her goal: to open a fully accessible hotel.
At Yameng’s Home, every detail (细节) has been thoughtfully designed. For example, the kitchen counters (操作台) are lowered to make cooking more convenient for guests who have difficulty moving around.
Cui also offers guests with disabilities free places to stay—though it’s not totally “free”. In return, guests are invited to share a story about themselves. “Some people might hesitate (犹豫) when they hear there’s no charge (收费). I want guests to feel they can stay here with complete peace of mind.” Cui said.
Besides running her guesthouse, Cui also works at Wei’ ai, a public service centre in Qingdao. “I first volunteered here when I was in high school,” she recalled. “That experience planted the seed for my future career (职业) choice.
At Wei’ ai, Cui and her team always organize some special activities. For example, children cover their eyes to experience what daily life is like for blind people and use wheelchairs to go up and down steps, without lifts. “I’ve made many friends with disabilities, which has given me a deeper understanding of their experiences,” Cui said. “I hope to be a bridge between them and the wider society.”
Nowadays, Yameng’s Home is becoming more popular among people with disabilities, but Cui hopes that one day she will be able to close it because it is no longer needed. “That would mean people with disabilities can easily find hotels like Yameng’s Home anywhere,” she said.
5. Why did Cui want to open such a special guesthouse?
A. Her parents advised her to do so.
B. She wanted to start her own business.
C. She hoped to help people find jobs.
D. Her friends’ travel experiences inspired her.
6. Guests can pay for their stay by ________.
A. volunteering B. telling a story
C. cleaning the room D. cooking a big meal
7. What might be Cui’s main purpose in organising these activities for children?
A. To make their weekend life more colourful.
B. To give them a chance to make friends.
C. To help them better understand the life of people with disabilities.
D. To encourage them to take part in more activities.
8. What can we infer (推断) from the last paragraph?
A. Cui hopes that her business will do very well.
B. Cui hopes that fully free hotels will be everywhere.
C. Cui hopes that all disabled people can find jobs.
D. Cui hopes that there will be a more disability-friendly society.
C
The facts we’ve got for you today are kind of fun! It turns out that your hand can tell a lot about your personality. It’s really unusual and strange. The secret mostly lies in your ring finger and index finger. It can say a lot about what kind of person you are. This test only applies (适用于) to men. There are three kinds.
A. The ring finger is longer than the index finger
We’re talking about handsome men here. They’re charming (有魅力的) and can get along well with everyone. Yet they become angry easily. They like to attack and are quick to take risks. This also means that this kind of person often makes more money than their workmates, though they all work hard.
B. The ring finger is shorter than the index finger
Men with these hands are very confident and can even be a little proud of themselves. These people have no trouble being alone often and don’t like being disturbed (打扰). However, when facing group tasks or new challenges, they are less confident. They are not the ones to take the first step and volunteer to start new activities.
C. The ring finger and the index finger are the same length
Maybe you have heard much about this. Men with these hands are good at helping others stop arguments. They are warm-hearted. Everything is balanced for this kind of person. They stay calm and things usually go well.
9. The writer thinks it’s ________ to tell a person’s personality by fingers.
A. difficult but fun B. unusual but fun
C. unusual and hard D. interesting and easy
10. If your ring finger is longer than the index finger, maybe ________
A. you like making more money B. you are much less confident
C. it’s easy for you to be angry D. you are good at organizing
11. You like staying alone. Which of the following belongs to you?
A. B. C. D.
12. From the passage we can know that ________.
A. there are three different kinds of hands
B. different men have the same type of fingers
C. the ring finger and the index finger are important
D. men with different kinds of fingers have different personalities
D
Creativity is hard to describe. On the one hand, we know people make creative breakthroughs (突破) when they have persistence (坚持). On the other hand, most of us give up when we get stuck on a problem, believing that our creativity gets weaker over time.
In fact, research shows that the longer we stick to a single problem or task, the more creative we get. One key reason for this is the “series order effect (序列顺序效应).” That is to say, each later creative idea is always better than the previous (之前的) one.
Some business companies fail to understand this point. Silicon Valley (硅谷) prizes youth over experience, believing that “people under 35 are those who make changes happen” while “people over 45 cannot create new ideas.” But many businessmen succeed in their 40s and beyond because they have repeatedly failed. The creators of the top highest-growth new companies are, in fact, around 45 years old.
Scientific talents show a similar feature (特点). Scientists usually do their best work near age 40. Nobel Prize winners and inventors also do much of their best work from their late 30s to mid-40s. Early success is great because it’s unusual, but the best way to achieve a breakthrough is to get stuck and get unstuck over and over again.
The “series order effect” works not just at the personal level but also at the level of companies and markets. Different from the belief in business that you have to be first, many of the most successful companies are those that have gone through early failures. For example, Google succeeded after twenty-two failures. Success can come when you have tried two, three, or even twenty-two times. Novelty (原创能力) is overvalued.
Persistence, however, is undervalued. So, the next time you’re stuck, remember: “You’re more creative than you think you are.”
13. According to Paragraph1, people may achieve creative breakthroughs when ________.
A. they keep on trying something B. their creativity becomes stronger
C. they stay away from hard problems D. they can describe creativity clearly
14. Which of the examples goes against the writer’s opinion?
A. Silicon Valley.
B. The creators of the top highest-growth new companies.
C. Scientific talents like Nobel Prize winners.
D. Google.
15. What can we know about the “series order effect” from the 5th paragraph?
A. It doesn’t work for big businesses.
B. It shows novelty is unnecessary.
C. It shows the importance of a good beginning.
D. It explains why failure is common and acceptable.
16. What is the best title for this article?
A. Creativity is hard to describe. B. Creativity becomes weaker as time goes.
C. Creativity is undervalued. D. Creativity comes from persistence.

I hate the sound of guns. I hate the smell of smoke. Every day, I watch friends fall and wonder if I will be next. I fear death, but I fear dying for nothing even more. What I want is simple: to go home. to sleep to a real bed, to live without counting the hours until the next attack. I dream of a world where we soldiers are not needed.
The Reporter
War is terrible. I see its cost in every face. I meet the mother who lost her son, the child who lost her smile. But I also feel the cold breath of death on my own neck. Every time I go to the front line, I wonder if I’ll come back alive. I long for peace, not just an end to fighting, but a return to normal life. I want to write about rebuilding, not destruction (破坏).
The Citizen (市民)
I am tired of war. I am tired of hiding. Every boom (响声) in the distance makes my heart stop. I fear that one day, the boom will come to my door. What I wish for is peace, not as a word, but as a life. I want to hear children laugh again. I want to walk outside without wondering if it will be my last step.
