For only 20 yuan, Fang Wenjing could buy her lunch at a community canteen in Hangzhou. She had a meat dish, a vegetable dish and a bowl of rice—all very healthy. “The dishes have a home-cooked taste,” said Fang.
Community canteens have become more and more popular in China recently. They were made for the old people at first. It is difficult for some old people to cook on their own, so the canteens provide help. They can have lunch and dinner in the canteen within a 10-minute walk, or community workers can pack the food and bring the dishes to them. Zhang Suxia, a worker at a community canteen in Hangzhou, said that the cook made special meals for the old. The food is soft and has less oil.
Now, the community canteens are bringing in more young people. For those who have no time to cook and don’t want to order takeout meals or eat at restaurants, the canteens provide them with healthier and cheaper dishes.
This also encourages community canteens to think of creative ways to provide food and make things easier for people. A canteen in Beijing’s Lugu Community brings out buffet-style (自主模式) dishes. The dishes are sold at 2.48 yuan per 100 grams. The price is lower than those of restaurants close by.
The rise of community canteens couldn’t have happened without the support of local governments. Little George lived in a poor village. One summer day George’s mother sent him to the field to pick up some dry wood for the fire.
George looked very hard. By the time the sun was high, he was very hot and wished for a cool place to rest and have some food. As he walked along, he found some shade, and by it were some fine, wild strawberries.
“How good these will be with my bread and butter,” thought George. He picked up all of the strawberries. As he was lifting the first strawberry to his mouth, he remembered his sick mother, alone in her dark, cold room in the village.
With this in mind, he put the strawberry back. “Shall I save them for her?” he asked himself. He thought how refreshing they would be for her, yet he was still looking at them with a longing eye.
“I will eat half, and take the other half to her,” he said. He divided them into two heaps (堆), but each heap looked so small. He put them together again. “I will only eat one,” he thought.
But, as he again lifted it to his mouth, he saw that he had taken the finest, and he put it back. When the sun was beginning to sink, George set out for home. How happy he felt that he had all his strawberries for his sick mother.
He heard his mother’s faint (微弱的) voice calling him. “Is that you, George? I am glad you have come back. I am thirsty, and am longing for some tea.” George ran to her and joyfully offered his wild strawberries. “And you saved them for me, didn’t you?” said she, laying her hand fondly (怜爱地) on his head, with tears in her eyes.
Could eating the strawberries have given George half the happiness he felt at this moment?

C. To grow some vegetables. D. To pick up some wood for the fire.
10. What did George do when he was about to eat the first strawberry?
A. He put the strawberry back. B. He ate the strawberry at once.
C He threw the strawberry away. D. He shared the strawberry with a stranger.
11. George’s mom would be ________ after seeing the strawberries.
A. unhappy B. moved C. worried D. uninterested
12. What can we learn from George’s story?
A. Sharing can bring happiness.
B. It’s better to put yourself first.

Plains wanderers are small, rare (珍稀的) birds that live in grasslands. Unlike most birds, female (雌性) plains wanderers are larger and stronger than males. Females take the lead in protecting their nests and babies from animals like foxes, while males often sit on the eggs to keep them warm. These birds are hard to find because their feathers blend (融合) into the grass, making them look like part of the landscape. Sadly, their numbers have been dropping because people are taking over their grassland homes for farms and cities.
To save them, scientists are using AI. The key is the birds’ calls. Mother wanderers make soft sounds to talk to their chicks and warn about danger. These calls are quiet and easy to miss, but AI can hear them clearly. Scientists put microphones (传声器) in the grasslands to record sounds all day and night. Then they put these recordings into a computer program. The AI learns to tell the wanderers’ calls apart from other noises, like the wind blowing or insects chirping. This helps scientists find where the mother birds are and how many chicks they have.
“AI helps us monitor these birds without bothering them,” says Dr. Lee, who leads the project. “We can find the most important areas for them and work to protect those places.” Once, the AI helped scientists find a hidden nest with three baby birds. Without AI, they might not have found it. Thanks to this technology, there is new hope for these rare birds, showing that AI can be a powerful tool in saving wildlife.
13. What do we know about plains wanderers?
A. Males are larger than females.
B. They are common in many places.
C. They are easy to find in grasslands.
D. Mother birds are bigger and protect babies.
14. The underlined word “monitor” in the last paragraph probably means “________”.
A. see B. feed C. catch D. follow
15. How do scientists use AI to find plains wanderers?
A. By taking photos of their nests.
B. By recording sounds and telling their calls.
C. By counting eggs in the grass.
D. By building more new nests for the birds.
16. What is the best title (标题) for the text?
A. What AI can do in daily life.
B. Why plains wanderers are rare.
C. How mother wanderers protect their chicks.
D. How AI helps to protect the rare plains wanderers.

My dear son,
It seems like yesterday that we brought you home from the hospital and now you are my little man. Your father and I were very nervous being first-time parents, I have been a mother for five years. When I look back these days, I cannot help but smile.
Every milestone (里程碑) of yours was a kind of personal success for me. Your first smile, your first word, your first step...As years passed, things started to get very challenging. Sometimes I found myself in very difficult situations. The mess you made and the countless naughty things you did really stressed me out. The times I was the most worried were when you were sick.
Now I have learned to deal with them calmly. The one thing that helped me go through the hard times was your smile—it made me forget everything and realize it was all worth it.
Soon it was time for preschool (幼儿园). I prepared you as much as I could for that terrible first day, but you cried so much that I sat down and cried with you. After the first week, you felt better, but I still cried because I didn't want to let you go. But I want you to enjoy yourself, enjoy your schoolwork, make good friends and most important of all, be a good man. The conflict (矛盾) has troubled me for a long while.
I have learned so much from you and will continue to do so in the following years. How to forgive, how to love unconditionally (无条件地) without expecting anything in return, how to enjoy the small things in life... The list is too long... Thank you! You have made my life meaningful! Wish you good luck!
Love and always,
Mom

C. By counting eggs in the grass.
D. By building more new nests for the birds.
16. What is the best title (标题) for the text?

Every milestone (里程碑) of yours was a kind of personal success for me. Your first smile your first word, your first step...As years passed, things started to get very challenging.

After the first week, you felt better, but I still cried because I didn't want to let you go. But I want you to enjoy yourself, enjoy your schoolwork, make good friends and most important of all, be a good man. The conflict (矛盾) has troubled me for a long while.
