Delicious smells came through the window. He held his bread near the warm air and smiled. He rarely had a hot meal. The shopkeeper rushed out. "You have enjoyed the smell of my soup. You must pay!" The worker showed his bread. He took no soup, and there was no price notice outside. The shopkeeper would not listen. A crowd gathered, and they took the argument to a judge. The judge asked the shopkeeper whether any food had disappeared. "No," the man replied, "but the smell belongs to me." Then the judge asked the worker whether he had any money. The worker took three small coins from his pocket. They were all he had. The judge told him to shake them near the shopkeeper's ear. The coins made a clear ringing sound. "Have you heard that?" the judge asked. The shopkeeper nodded and reached out his hand. But the judge told the worker to put the coins away. "He has paid for the smell of your soup with the sound of his money," the judge explained. The crowd laughed. The shopkeeper's face turned red, and he walked back to his shop. The worker thanked the judge. The judge accepted the shopkeeper's strange rule for a moment, then applied it equally to both sides. The worker left with his bread, his coins and a smile. 21. Why did the shopkeeper demand payment? A. The worker broke his soup bowl. B. The worker took food without asking. C. The worker enjoyed the smell of his soup. D. The worker stood in front of his window. 22. What does "applied" in the last paragraph mean? A. Forgot. B. Used. C. Invented. D. Questioned. 23. Why did the judge ask the worker to shake his coins? A. To find out how rich the worker was. B. To make the crowd stop talking. C. To pay the shopkeeper real money. D. To show a problem in the shopkeeper's rule. 24. Which is the correct order of the events? a. The shopkeeper reached for the money. b. The worker enjoyed the soup's smell. c. The worker shook his coins. d. The judge asked whether food was missing. A. b → d → c → a B. d → b → a → c C. b → c → a → d D. c → a → d → b 25. Which is the best title for the story? A. A Shopkeeper's Valuable Soup B. A Worker Who Lost His Money C. The Price of a Smell D. The Judge's Favourite Meal B ① In the old fable The Crow and the Pitcher, a thirsty crow drops stones into a container. The water rises, and the bird can drink. It is a neat story, but can real birds solve a similar problem? Researchers turned the tale into a test. ② In a 2014 study, New Caledonian crows faced a clear tube with water inside. Food floated on the water, too low for the birds to reach. Dropping suitable objects into the tube raised the water and brought the food closer. The researchers offered different choices: water or sand, and sinking or floating objects. Objects that stayed on the surface did little to bring the food within reach. ③ The birds chose water more often than sand. They also used sinking objects more often than floating ones. However, they did not solve every version of the task. Some more difficult arrangements still caused trouble. ④ Later research added an important caution. Birds' earlier experience and preferences for certain objects could affect their choices. They could learn which objects led to food through repeated attempts. A successful choice did not necessarily mean that a bird understood the whole process before trying. ⑤ The fable gives a clever answer. Research asks how an animal reaches that answer. The two have different jobs. A good test needs more than a happy ending: it must also consider other possible explanations. 26. "Floating objects" in paragraph ② are objects that _____. A. quickly reach the bottom B. always become heavier in water C. hold food in a closed box D. stay on the surface of water 27. What was the purpose of offering water and sand? A. To compare useful and unhelpful choices. B. To find the birds' favourite drink. C. To make the birds feel comfortable. D. To teach the birds how to swim. 28. Which conclusion is supported by the passage? A. Every crow succeeds on its first attempt. B. Birds understand every task before trying. C. Experience can influence birds' choices. D. The experiment proved every ancient fable. 29. How is the passage mainly organized? A. A rule → punishments → a final decision B. A story → tests and results → caution C. A problem → several unrelated legends D. An invitation → activities → travel tips 30. What type of text is this passage? A. A science article for general readers. B. A diary about caring for a pet crow. C. A notice about a storytelling contest. D. A review of a film about wild birds. C When people imagine an ancient Roman fort, they may think of walls, weapons and orders. At Vindolanda in Britain, however, some of the most revealing finds are small pieces of wood with ink writing. One of them contains something surprisingly familiar: an invitation to a birthday party. The letter dates from about AD 97–105. Claudia Severa sent it to Sulpicia Lepidina. She invited Lepidina to visit on September 11 and hoped her arrival would make the day more enjoyable. She also sent greetings between their families. The closing words appear in different handwriting from the main part of the letter. They were added by Severa herself. That small change in handwriting matters. It provides evidence that this woman could write. The friendly message also helps us see life beyond military business. These people had families, friends and celebrations. Thin wooden tablets could carry personal messages, not just official information. Other tablets from Vindolanda record matters such as people who owed money or preparations for a festival. Yet a letter has limits. This invitation tells us what Severa wanted, not whether Lepidina actually came. It cannot prove that every woman in Roman Britain could write. Parts of ancient texts may also be damaged or difficult to read, so careful readers should not fill every gap with a colourful guess. Small documents bring us closer to ordinary people in the past, but good history keeps asking what the evidence really shows. 31. What was Severa's main purpose in writing the letter? A. To give an order to Roman soldiers. B. To invite Lepidina to her birthday party. C. To ask for money to repair a building. D. To explain how to write on wood. 32. Why are the wooden tablets valuable to historians? A. They are made from unusually expensive wood. B. They tell every detail of all Roman wars. C. They show that all Romans attended parties. D. They provide information about ordinary lives. 33. What can historians reasonably learn from the closing handwriting? A. Severa could write some words herself. B. Lepidina wrote the whole invitation. C. All women in Roman Britain could write. D. Every letter was written by two people. 34. Which question does the invitation leave unanswered? A. Who received the invitation? B. When was the birthday celebration? C. Did Lepidina attend the celebration? D. Did Severa wish her guest to come? 35. Why does the writer include the last paragraph? A. To persuade readers to collect old wood. B. To remind readers to limit historical claims. C. To prove ancient letters are usually false. D. To give a complete history of Roman Britain. Ancient stories often celebrate a clever answer. His horses were slower than the king's horses of the same level. He felt worried. One day, his friend Sun Bin watched the races and thought of a different plan. First, Tian Ji used his weakest horse against the king's strongest one and lost. Next, his strongest horse beat the king's middle horse. Finally, his middle horse beat the king's weakest one. Tian Ji won two of the three races. He was surprised and thanked Sun Bin. The story shows that understanding a problem and changing our plan can sometimes matter more than having better tools.
