Everyone knows that forests help fight climate change. However, a recent scientific report shows that the world lost 300,000 square kilometers of forests in 2024. That’s an area about the size of Italy.
According to the report, for the first time ever, fires were the biggest cause of forest loss. ▲ . This country has the largest area of rainforest in the world. Last year, it suffered from a long period of dry weather. Wildfires broke out and spread. As a result, about 25,000 square kilometers of the primary rainforest disappeared in the country. This meant fires caused 66% of its forest loss.
The second biggest cause of the world’s forest loss was clearing land for farming. As people need more farmland, they keep cutting down forests every year. In 2024, the area of forest cleared for farming increased by 14% worldwide. The situation was more severe in developing countries. For example, Bolivia’s forest loss doubled in 2024.
Without doubt, something must be done. Experts call on governments, businesses and people to work together before it is too late. It seems that China has set a good example. Thanks to cooperation at many levels, China had the biggest increase in forest area among all countries in 2024. If more countries start to take action like China, the earth will become a greener planet.

Pull-ups (引体向上) are one of the most common exercises. But they’re hard to do in the right way.
Three junior high school students from Beijing made a monitor (监测器) to help people do pull-ups better. They won first prize for their work in the 44th Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition in March 2025.
The three students are from different schools in Beijing. Their shared interest in programming (编程) brought them together in a class at a science museum. “Each of us was good at different parts of programming, so we decided to take part in the competition as a team,” said 13-year-old Zhang Luotu, the team leader.
“Many classmates were doing pull-ups in the wrong way without realising they could get hurt,” said Zhang. “So we made this to help.”
The monitor has two parts—two small sensors (传感器) and a pair of gloves. First, users put the sensors on their arms. While doing pull-ups, the sensors measure (测量) the electrical signals from each arm. The monitor then checks if the numbers match. If not, the gloves shine a red light. This can help people know they do pull-ups in the wrong way.
“Pull-ups are a common PE test in many places, but we think they should be more than that,” Zhang said. “They are a great exercise and we should try to do them in the right way.”

五、阅读表达 (共5小题,计10分)
阅读短文,根据题目要求完成各小题。
When I was packing my clothes, I accidentally found a set of Hanfu I only wore once. Since a Chinese friend gave me a set of ancient-style hair accessories, I matched a whole set of Hanfu. Then, ancient-style articles appeared in my clothes one after another. When I saw them again, I thought of a sentence: I may have been caught by the “birdcage effect (BCE)”!
“The birdcage effect” is one of the top ten psychological problems that human beings cannot easily deal with. The BCE means that when you get something one day, you will probably prepare more things to match it. There is a story behind it. One day, James, a psychologist, joked with his friend Carlson and predicted that Carlson would surely raise a bird. At first, Carlson didn’t care. When James gave Carlson a birdcage on his birthday, friends who visited Carlson’s house believed that he had raised birds. During that process, Carlson kept explaining. In the end he really bought a bird. Like Carlson, many people have been or are being caught in the BCE.
My friend Tinny said she wanted to buy a good pen to match a pretty notebook her sister gave her. I joked that she must have been caught in the BCE. But my friend said with a smile: “Why not use the ‘birdcage effect’ instead? When I have a beautiful notebook, I will want to buy a pen that is smooth and easy to write with, and next I will want to buy a book I like, and then start to take notes.”
For the first time, I heard that the BCE could be used in reverse. However, this reminded me of my middle school days, and I seemed to have used the BCE. One day, I bought a magazine and saw the call for writings published in the magazine, so I started writing. After that, I bought a beautiful notebook to record my feelings. More and more magazines appeared in my study, and my interest for writing increased.
How can we stop being caught in the BCE in many things and even use it? Many kinds of “birdcages” unavoidably appear in life, but we can divide them. If it is not in line with the actual situation, it is a “negative birdcage”, so we must learn to stop losses in time. If it is a “positive birdcage” that drives us to develop upward, we can clear our goals up and encourage ourselves to move toward our goals. At this time, we will find that the BCE is actually not so terrible!
46. What made the writer think of the birdcage effect?

49. Last term, my mother gave me a beautiful painting brush. To match it, I bought painting paper and pigments. Then I kept practicing painting every day and finally won the first prize in the school painting competition. This is my experience with the birdcage effect.
50. We should stop losses in time for negative ones, and clear our goals up and encourage ourselves for positive ones.

That year alone, newly-planted trees in China covered an area of nearly 45,000 square kilometers, according to a news report.

16. What did the three students make to win first prize in the competition?
