There must be few occasions when it would be really rude to refuse an invitation to hit someone you’ve just met with your fist! But I’m in one of those right now. I’m in a rehearsal(排 练) room in a theatre with a group of actors, facing up to stage fighting director Kate Waters.
She wants me to hit her with my fist. But fear not, this is all strictly pretend! Kate, known in the industry as Kombat Kate, is giving a lesson on how actors fight each other without getting hurt.
Already a passionate martial arts expert from childhood, Kate did drama at university, and one of her courses introduced her to stage fighting. When she made inquiries about the possibility of teaching it as a career, she was told about the register of stage fight directors and the qualifications she’d need to be accepted into it. It was no small order: as well as a certificate
in advanced stage fighting, she would need a black belt in karate (空手道) and skill in fencing, a
sport she’d never tried before. But she rose to the challenge and finally successfully became one of only two women on the official register.
Of course, a stage fight is just smoke and mirrors. In our lesson, Kate shows me how an actor will stand with his or her back to the audience ahead of a planned slap (拍). When the slap comes it makes contact not with the skin but with the air: the actor hits his chest or leg to make
the sound of the slap.
In the rehearsal room, I can’t resist asking Kate how she thinks she would do in a real fight.Would she give her attacker a hard time? She laughs,“Oh, I’d be awful,” she says.“I only know how to pretend.” I can’t help thinking, however, that she's just being rather humble.
24.Why does Kate ask the author to hit her?
A.To show actors stage fighting skills. B.To teach actors to defend themselves. C.To help actors rehearse an action scene. D.To attract actors' interest in martial arts.
25.What was a challenge Kate faced in becoming a stage fight director?
A.She could not find a female teacher. B.She had no prior experience in drama. C.She had to master an unfamiliar sport. D.She had trouble obtaining a certificate.
26.What do the underlined words“smoke and mirrors” in paragraph 3 mean? A.A difficult technique. B.A dangerous situation.
C.A well-planned lesson. D.A misleading performance.
27.What does the author imply about Kate’s real fighting ability?
A.She relies a lot on tricks.
B.She may lack confidence in herself. C.She might be better than she admits.
D.She excels more at performing than fighting.
C
When was the last time you talked proudly about being sensitive? Most likely, the answer is never. There are plenty of characters we take pride in, but being “sensitive” is usually considered as a weakness. The message sensitive people get isn’t to celebrate who they are. It’s that they should “overcome” their sensitivity.
However, sensitivity is largely genetic, and not something you can turn off. It is a character connected to talent and something we should embrace. In fact, according to thirty years of research, it’s not only a healthy character, but it also serves as a big advantage.
As a personality character, being sensitive means you take in more information from your environment, and you do more with it. Sensitive people process information more deeply than others do. This changes the way you see the world. You probably notice what others miss, think, and feel deeply.
The most well-known sensitive gift is creativity. Sensitive people tend to be highly creative, and many — perhaps most — artists, musicians, and actors are themselves sensitive people.
But creativity doesn’t end with the arts. The same ability changes into innovation. Many of our greatest thinkers and scientists throughout history have been sensitive people, like Charles Darwin. Sensitive people have this ability to innovate because they tend to be deep thinkers who spend more time and energy turning problems over in their heads — and end up seeing more possibilities and solutions.
Sensitive people do pay a price for these gifts, however, by becoming overstimulated. Overstimulation is what happens when there is simply too much information for the brain to
deal with. But sensitive people can learn to deal with it. For them, a little bit of quiet alone time goes a long way.
If any of this sounds like you, you might be more sensitive than you realize. If so, you have probably felt the pressure to hide it. But that’s a trap. You can’t make yourself less sensitive than you are and trying to do so only cuts you off from your gifts.
Instead, the single most important step you can take for yourself is what society has told you not to do your whole life: Stop hiding from your sensitivity. Embrace it, and show it to the world.
28.What phenomenon does the author mention in paragraph l ?
A.People usually take pride in their being sensitive. B.Being negative is often looked up to in our daily life. C.Being sensitive is traditionally regarded as a weakness.
D.Generally speaking, we have few characters that should be praised.
29.Why does the author think of sensitivity as an advantage?
A.Because it has nothing to do with talent. B.Because you can see the world more deeply with it. C.Because people with it tend to be talented artists.
D.Because it is largely acquired by learning and can easily be changed.
30.Why is Charles Darwin mentioned in the text?
A.To show some great scientists in history are sensitive. B.To explain the most famous sensitive gift is creativity. C.To prove most artists, musicians and actors are sensitive.
D.To show sensitive people process information more deeply than others do.
31.What is a sensitive person recommended to do?
A.Pay for it. B.Consult doctors. C.Avoid showing it. D.Jump at it.
D
Recently, OpenAI launched free AI image generation on ChatGPT. The Internet is now flooded with AI pictures imitating the styles of Miyazaki Hayao and other famous artists. Yet AI-generated artworks feel strangely empty to audiences. It is not simply that AI lacks originality; after all, so too does most human art.
The work produced by machines is, in an important sense, a body without soul. There is no self within the machine, and so there can be no connection or community with the other at the
level of being.
Art is a unique human pursuit for everyone. It is more than a beautiful combination of colors, forms, sounds and words. As Hegel puts it, art is a sensitive expression of an idea. It is a spiritual and cultural activity. Its beauty lies in how it affects us — whether it makes us think, feel another’s pain, brings hope, or uplifts spirits. When humans create art, they pour indescribable inner feelings and personal life experiences into their works. As a process, art includes all activities and efforts which express human mentality, perceived through our senses.
This special human touch allows viewers to project their own emotions onto artworks and spiritually communicate with creators beyond the limits of language. The permanent value of art comes from the unique inner traces, feelings and life perspectives of individual creators. Art creation is essentially emotional transference. Creators convey inner true feelings, while audiences are able to understand them and find reflections of their own hidden fears and desires in works. Art bridges the inner gaps between audiences and creators with a shared language.
Machine-generated art loses its most vital power — the ability to connect people. This loss is especially harmful in an increasingly lonely world. The disappearance of such artistic connection damages personal relationships and undermines social and political stability. Our society relies on these emotional bonds. We recognize fundamental shared humanity despite our differences.
32.Why do AI-generated artworks feel empty to audience?
A.They are short of originality. B.They fail to convey messages. C.They lack a genuine connection. D.They imitate other artists’ styles.
33.What does the true beauty of art lie in?
A.The power to touch the human souls. B.The combination of colors and words. C.The reflection of artists’ experiences. D.The description of human activities.
34.How does art bridge the inner gaps between human beings?
A.It creates special visual effects. B.Viewers personally talk with artists. C.It relieves viewers’ hidden fears.
D.Viewers identify with artists.
35.What is the author’s attitude towards the wave of AI-generated art?
A.Supportive. B.Objective. C.Concerned. D.Uncertain.
Someone makes a statement, and you know it is not true. Most of us can think of those times when we have smiled and nodded, likely to avoid “making waves”. Sometimes, knowing when to stay quiet is the smart choice. 36 But what about the vast number of times when not speaking your truth influences your emotional health? Sometimes, silence can quickly backfire and damage your relationships.
When you keep silent repeatedly, it may feel like you are avoiding conflict. 37 We all know that the “bottle it up and implode or explode later” plan does not work well for any of us. Every unspoken thought becomes a brick in the wall that grows between you and the other person.
38 If you consistently nod along passively, others will notice when your actions don’t agree with your words. They may wonder whether you are holding back or not being sincere. If you hold back to avoid hurting feelings or spare tension, the result may be the opposite.
Your view matters. By staying silent, you lose opportunities to express your feelings. 39 But later, if you unearth how you really feel, they may feel betrayed (背叛)that you did not open up about your true feelings earlier on. Continued silence may lead others to assume
that you are not interested or that you are emotionally unavailable.
While silence sometimes may feel like caution and be wise, too much of it gets in the way of closeness and trust in relationships. 40
A.You’re actually building it up.
B.The growing doubt leads to distance. C.Others may trust you because you are honest.
D.Trust comes from honesty more than it does from agreement. E.Speaking up creates connection and conveys a sense of caring in others. F.This is especially true when the other person tends to get annoyed easily. G.Others may think your silence is an agreement with what they are saying.

Dine Alone or Together?
we were chatting. Our conversation turned to her weekly book club with friends. Mrs. Thompson smiled, talking about her two old friends. Mr. Brown arrived late for the game, and Mrs. Smith failed to bring her glasses twice. “We’re quite a group,” she said.
Then her expression grew thoughtful. “We manage, of course. But sometimes I think wouldn’t it be nice if something simply reminds us? Take medicine. Water the plants. Friday for book club.” She tapped her head with a soft laugh.
Her words sank in. At that moment, an idea formed in my mind. As I stood up to leave, I smiled mysteriously, “Give me a few days, and I’ll bring you a little surprise.”
“Oh? I’ll try not to forget that,” she laughed.

My name is Mae. I’ve always been passionate about exploring and solving problems — whether fixing a broken toy or figuring out how a phone app works. This led me to join our school’s Coding ( 编程) Club. In our first lesson, Ms. Davis told us that coding is more than
writing lines of code. It is about using technology to make life easier for others.
“Your project,” she announced in class one day, “is to create a simple app that solves a real-life problem.” “You have one week to prepare,” she added gently, hoping this would give us enough time to find inspiration and finish the project.
The challenge stayed with me as I walked to my neighbor Mrs. Thompson’s apartment after school. She had invited me for tea, as she often did on Tuesdays. Mrs. Thompson was kind and cheerful, but lately she had been a little forgetful, often misplacing her keys or repeating the same story twice without realizing it. When I arrived, she was in the kitchen.
“Mae! Good timing,” she greeted me warmly, and then stopped, glancing at the kettle. “Did I already boil water for tea?”
I checked the kettle — it was still warm. We laughed about it as I poured water, and soon
A week later, I presented my project to Ms. Davis.

W: Hi, Peter. I’m sorry to hear you’re leaving today. So, what did you make of Suzhou gardens? M: Well, to be honest, when I first arrived, I was a little disappointed. I’d expected something more
modern. But when I walked into the Humble Administrator’s Garden, I was so amazed! It was like stepping into a painting.
W: Where else did you go?
M: I visited the Lingering Garden, too. I learned a lot about traditional Chinese garden architecture.
W: Oh, well, what about the Tiger Hill — that’s pretty high. Some of the views from there are breathtaking!
M: Oh, that place, yes. But I had no idea there would be so many tourists! So I decided to go to the Hanshan Temple instead. That place was really quiet.
11.A 12.C 13.B
M: Hi, Diana. I would like to talk to you before I respond to the job offer I’ve received from Global Travel. They’ve offered me the position of marketing director.
W: I’m sorry to hear that, David. Thank you for letting me know before making your final decision.
M: I genuinely value my experience here. Having worked in the department for four years, I have gained significant professional growth. However, there’s been no indication of career advancement.
W: Skies Airlines. How can I help you?
M: I’d like to buy a ticket from London to Paris on the morning of January 23rd. W: Would you like to book a return flight as well?
M: No, thank you. The weather forecast doesn’t recommend flying. I’m taking the railway back. 2.A
W: How I wish there were a parking lot in our neighbourhood! How can we get one? M: I think we should hold a meeting to discuss it.
3.C
W: Hi, Jack! I saw your name on the conference schedule. You’re heading to Berlin next Friday, right?
M: Yes, Linda. I’ll be there for three days. Then I’m off to Munich — I’ve always wanted to visit those old castles there.
4.B
M: Hi, Emma. I remember the band practice is on October 14th, but you said it’s on October 16th. Are you sure?
W: Oh, sorry. It was a slip of the tongue. I meant October 12th for sure. 5.A
W: Hi, Jason! Which volunteer activity are you joining this weekend, the beach cleanup on Saturday or the animal shelter on Sunday?
M: Actually, neither. I’m visiting the nursing home on Sunday instead. We’ll help clean up the common areas and chat or play games with the residents.
6.C 7.C
W: Hi, I’m Charlotte from New Zealand. I’m studying biology here on exchange. M: Hi, I’m Li Wei. Nice to meet you!
W: Would you mind if I ask about getting around the city? I’m still figuring things out.
M: Not at all. Most students take the green bus — it runs every 15 minutes and only costs ¥2. W: What about those blue bikes with digital locks?
M: Those are the CityCycle bikes. You can unlock them using an app. The first 30 minutes cost ¥1.5, and after that, it’s ¥1 for every additional 30 minutes. They are available all over the city and are perfect for short trips.
W: You’ve been a great team member here. What would make you consider staying? M: I don’t need a big salary increase, but I’d like to take on more challenges.
W: Let me consult with the management team. We truly regret losing someone with your skills and dedication.
M: I really appreciate your support. 14.A 15.B 16.C
W: Mark, you look focused. Still working on your history paper?
M: Hi, Lisa. Actually, I just finished the first draft. Now, I’m using an AI writing assistant to improve the language and check my arguments.
W: An AI assistant? Isn’t that like cheating? I’ve avoided using AI for my assignments, worrying teachers might disapprove.
M: Not if you use it right. As a really smart study partner, AI doesn’t do the work for me. For example, it might say, “This part needs better support,” but then I will go find the support myself.
W: Hmm, that does sound helpful. I went the other way last semester with a math app. I got into the habit of just taking pictures of problems and copying the solutions. It really didn’t help me when exam time came, only to make things worse.
M: I see. That’s exactly the risk. The key is to stay actively involved.
W: I like that idea. Maybe I should give it another try, but set clear rules. Like using it only to explain concepts I find difficult, not to do the work for me.

W: Welcome back, everyone. This is Global Wave Radio. Here’s something interesting. Yesterday, a teenage girl named Emma Reed from Vancouver, Canada, received a package from
Switzerland. Inside was her sketchbook, lost three years ago during a school trip to the Swiss Alps. It was found by Lucas Weber, a high school art teacher, near a hiking trail in Interlaken in 2022. There was no name or address, but it contained beautiful drawings of mountains and forests, with a short poem on the cover. Impressed by the artwork and poem, Lucas kept the sketchbook and began searching online for its owner. Last month, he came across a news article about a Vancouver student organizing an environmental art exhibition using nature-themed paintings. The article quoted her poem — the very one on the cover of the sketchbook. Lucas contacted the author of the article, who helped him reach Emma, now 17. Soon, the sketchbook was returned.
Caledonian Sleeper is a gateway to a world of possibilities
with our overnight rail service bringing a touch of the extraordinary to travel between London and Edinburgh.(喀里多尼亚卧铺列车是通往无限可能世界的门户,我们的夜间铁路服务为往返伦敦与 爱丁堡的旅途增添别样精彩。)”
根据原文倒数第四段“Our Fixed Advance tickets offer our best value fares. No
changes, refunds or upgrades are allowed. ”及倒数第三段“Available for Caledonian Double (£200/passenger), Club rooms (£170/passenger) (可预订喀里多尼亚双人房(每 位乘客 200 英镑)、俱乐部客房(每位乘客 170 英镑))”、原文倒数第二段“Notice: These are single (one-way) tickets; to make a return journey, just buy two single tickets.(注意:以上均为单程票;如需 往返行程,仅需购买两张单程票。)”、原文最后一段“If you are travelling in a Caledonian Double or Club room, you’ re welcome to bring up to 2 pets with an additional fare as low as £30 per room.(若您入 住喀里多尼亚双人房或俱乐部客房,最多可携带两只宠物,每间客房附加费用低至 30 英镑。)”

She wants me to hit her with my fist. But fear not, this is
all strictly pretend! Kate, known in the industry as Kombat Kate, is giving a lesson on how actors fight each other without getting hurt. 根据文章第二段的“It was no small order: as well as a certificate in advanced stage fighting, she would need a black belt in karate (空手道) and skill in fencing, a sport she’d never tried before.(这可不是个小任务:除了需要高级舞台格斗证书外,她还需要空手道黑带,以及掌握一项 她从未尝试过的运动 —— 击剑技能。)”
根据下文“In our lesson, Kate shows me how an actor will stand with his or her back to the audience ahead of a planned slap (拍). When the slap comes it makes contact not with the skin but with the air: the actor hits his chest or leg to make the sound of the slap.(在我们的课上,凯特向我展示 了演员在计划好的拍打动作前如何背对观众。当拍打动作发生时,手掌并没有接触皮肤,而是打 在空气中:演员会拍打自己的胸部或腿部来制造拍打声。)”可知,舞台格斗并不是真实的打斗, 而是通过技巧制造出逼真的效果,具有误导性。因此 “smoke and mirrors” 在此处意为 “一种误导 性的表演”。
27.推理判断题。根据文章第四段的“She laughs, “Oh, I’d be awful,” she says. “I only know how to
pretend.” I can’t help thinking, however, that she’s just being rather humble.(她笑着说:“哦,那我会很 糟糕的。”

根据第一段“There are plenty of characters we take pride in, but being “sensitive” is usually considered as a weakness.(有很多我们引以为傲的性格,但“敏感”通常被认为是 一种弱点)”可知,“敏感”习惯上被认为是一种缺陷,而不是优势。故选 C。 29. 根据第三段“Sensitive people process information more deeply than others do. This changes the way you see the world. You probably notice what others miss, think, and feel deeply.(敏感的 人比其他人更能深入地处理信息。这会改变你看待世界的方式。你可能会注意到别人错过了什么, 想了什么,感受到了什么)”可知,敏感的人能够深入加工获取的信息,能更深入地了解世界。故 选 B。
30.推理判断题。根据第五段“Many of our greatest thinkers and scientists throughout history have been sensitive people, like Charles Darwin.(历史上许多伟大的思想家和科学家都是敏感的人,比如查尔 斯·达尔文)”可知,提到了查尔斯·达尔文是为了显示历史上一些伟大的科学家是敏感的。故选 A。 31. 根据最后一段“Instead, the single most important step you can take for yourself is
what society has told you not to do your whole life: Stop hiding from your sensitivity. Embrace it, and show it to the world.(相反,你可以为自己采取的最重要的一步是社会告诉你一辈子不要做的事情: 不要躲避你的敏感。

根据第二段“The work produced by machines is, in an important sense, a body without soul. There is no self within the machine, and so there can be no connection or community with the other at the level of being.(从一个重要层面来讲,机器产出的作品只是一具没有灵魂的躯壳。机
器没有自我意识,因此无法在存在的层面与他人建立联结、产生精神共鸣。)”可知,AI 生成的艺 术品让观众感到空洞是因为它们缺少真实的情感联结。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段“Its beauty lies in how it affects us — whether it makes us think, feel
another’s pain, brings hope, or uplifts spirits.(艺术之美在于它对我们产生的影响 —— 能否引发思 考、让人感知他人的痛苦、带来希望,或是振奋人心。)”
根据倒数第二段“This special human touch allows viewers to project their own emotions onto artworks and spiritually communicate with creators beyond the limits of language.(这种 独特的人文温度,能让观者将自身情感投射到作品之上,跨越语言的局限,和创作者进行精神交 流。 )” 和“Creators convey inner true feelings, while audiences are able to understand them and find
reflections of their own hidden fears and desires in works. Art bridges the inner gaps between audiences and creators with a shared language.(创作者表达内心真实的感受,而观众能够理解这些情感,并在 作品中看到自己潜藏的恐惧与渴望。
根据最后一段“Machine-generated art loses its most vital power — the ability to connect people. This loss is especially harmful in an increasingly lonely world. The disappearance of such artistic connection damages personal relationships and undermines social and political stability.(机

Dine Alone or Together?
Recently, whether to dine alone or eat together in the school canteen has aroused wide concern among students.
From what I have observed, quite a number of students tend to dine alone. Instead of wasting precious time waiting for their partners, they can get their meals and finish eating efficiently. Besides, this quiet moment enables them to reflect on their schoolwork or simply calm themselves down after tiring lessons. Though eating in groups undoubtedly brings joy, it sometimes gives rise to unnecessary chatter and time‑consuming delays.
Therefore, dining alone is actually a sensible choice for those students who treasure their spare time and hope for a little peace amid busy school life.
Dine Alone or Together?
Students hold different opinions on whether they should dine alone or eat together in our school canteen.
I am firmly in favour of dining with companions. Take my own experience as an example.
Whenever I eat with my classmates, we freely share our true feelings about study and daily life. Those casual conversations effectively ease my anxiety from heavy schoolwork and gradually deepen our friendship. Admittedly, dining alone guarantees complete peace, yet it may leave us feeling isolated from our classmates.
As far as I am concerned, meals shared with friends serve as a precious chance to connect with each other and greatly brighten our campus life.

That night, I sat at my desk, notebook open and mind racing with details. I decided to design a gentle reminder app especially for the elderly. I listed simple functions: important dates, daily tasks, and warm notes. I focused on making the words big and the buttons easy to touch. Whenever I felt stuck, I thought of Mrs. Thompson’s kind smile and her wish for something to help her remember. I carefully tested every part again and again, making sure it was simple and helpful. Deep in my heart, I hoped this little app could bring convenience and warmth to her and more elderly people.
A week later, I presented my project to Ms. Davis. I introduced the app’s purpose and showed how it worked. Ms. Davis praised my thoughtful idea and spoke highly of my project. After class, I brought the app to Mrs. Thompson. She was delighted and tried it at once. “This is exactly what I need,” she said happily. Watching her smile, I truly understood what Ms. Davis had meant: coding is not just code, but a way to use technology to care for others.
