Sitting in my car in a small town, it was the first time for me to watch dolphins swim in the ocean. Then, the tide was going out 1. There was little time for the dolphins to swim back. More and more dolphins were left on the 2. They would die soon because they were out of the ocean. Those dolphins needed help 3.
Without thinking too much, I jumped off my car and ran towards them. I first called the police, but they were too 4 to come at once. Knowing that it would take the police an hour to drive here, I turned to the 5 for help, hoping people nearby could see my post.
Minutes later, three teenage boys of a nearby school were the first to arrive. However, none of us had the 6 to save beached dolphins. The only thing we could do is to 7 what was happening to the police.
Soon, volunteers and fishermen came. Fishermen led all the volunteers to work. Some helped 8 adult dolphins by covering their body with wet towels. Others were pulling smaller dolphins to deeper waters.
However, to everyone’s surprise, these baby dolphins didn’t leave by themselves after they got free. When the tide began to 9, the baby dolphins swam nearer and made sounds to encourage each other. They waited till the rescue was complete. Then they left together.
It really warmed my heart that dolphins were so 10 to each other. I will never forget it!

Hua Luogeng was born in 1910 in Jiangsu Province. His family was poor — his father was a farmer, and his mother did housework. When Hua was 15, he had to drop out of school because his family couldn’t afford the tuition(学费). But he didn’t stop learning math — he borrowed books from friends and studied on his own.
One day, Hua found a mistake in a math book. He wrote a letter to the author, explaining the mistake clearly. The author was surprised — a 19‑year‑old boy who didn’t finish high school found a mistake in a college textbook! The author invited Hua to study at his university, but Hua refused. He said, “I need to stay with my family and help them.” Instead, he got a job at a middle school and taught math while continuing his own studies.
In 1930, Hua published his first math paper. The paper caught the attention of Professor Xiong Qinglai — a famous mathematician. Professor Xiong invited Hua to work at Tsinghua University. At Tsinghua, Hua didn’t have a formal degree, but he worked harder than anyone else. He read hundreds of math books and wrote many papers. Soon, he became a teacher at Tsinghua — even though he had never gone to college.

Long ago, in ancient China, there was a story about the invention of silk. People believed that silk was first invented by Leizu, the wife of the Yellow Emperor. Leizu learned how to make cocoons (蚕茧) into soft and strong cloth—silk, and it was called “China’s Gold”. Following kings’ orders, the Chinese kept the secret of making silk for centuries.
But something amazing happened. During the Han Dynasty, the brave officer Zhang Qian travelled west as far as Central Asia and brought silk there. As years passed, silk became so important that the trade road from China to Europe got its name—the Silk Road.
From China, people sold silk and tea. In return, they received treasures such as spices (香料), gold and silver from the West. At the very beginning, it was mainly about trade; then people began to share ideas, technologies and cultures. For example, Chinese inventions like paper‑making were spread to the West, while new ideas about math and science came to China.
Most importantly, the Silk Road helped different cultures learn from each other. Art, music and even language were shared along this ancient road. In places like the Dunhuang Grottoes (敦煌石窟) in China, you can see how art pieces combined Eastern and Western styles into something distinctive. It cannot be seen anywhere else.
The story of the Silk Road tells us how people from faraway lands could become friends through trade and shared ideas. Today, we remember the Silk Road as one of the greatest examples of cooperation (合作) and exchange in history. It shows us how important it is to learn about and respect each other’s traditions, and that different cultures can work together to create amazing things.

Each time a visitor walks into the Mogao Grottoes (莫高窟) in Dunhuang, Gansu province, they are greeted by the breathtaking beauty of the ancient murals (壁画). However, behind this great artwork there is a difficult protection problem. Thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), heritage protection has entered a new era.
AI has brought great changes to the protection of Dunhuang’s culture relics (文物). First, it allows real‑time watching of environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity (湿度), which are very important for keeping the murals safe. Second, AI can study large numbers of pictures to find cracks (裂缝) and other problems clearly. For example, an AI system can find small changes in the colors that human eyes may not see, helping workers deal with problems early. Third, AI helps make repair plans by using old records and similar cases, making sure the repair work is kept as it was.
While AI provides powerful tools, it is important to use it in a responsible way. Conservators (文物修复师) must follow the rule of not changing too much. AI should not take the place of human skills but work with experts to help make decisions. Also, AI tools need to be based on solid research, so that the results are reliable and do not cause further harm to the heritage.
The future of Dunhuang’s heritage protection looks promising. With continuous improvement in AI technology, we can expect clearer and more practical protection methods. However, the key to success lies in combining technology with human care. Only in this way can Dunhuang’s amazing art and history continue to shine for generations to come.
21. What is AI used for according to Paragraph 1?
A. Painting pictures. B. Treating tourists. C. Protecting heritage. D. Comforting visitors.
22. How can AI help the murals according to Paragraph 2?
A. By painting new colors on the old murals.
B. By building more grottoes for the old relics.
