Kyle Lybarger, from Alabama, has become an unexpected Internet star by introducing followers to southeastern flora (植物群). Now he’s a protector of native (本地的) rare plants. “A lot of what we’re doing is saving the plants,” he says. Since over 90% of Alabama’s land is private, he knocks on doors to offer free care for rare (珍稀的) plants, supported by his social media income.
It all started with a terrible mistake. About a decade ago, Lybarger was managing a private forest where the owner let him hunt, and he wanted to attract more deer. He cleared an open rocky area to plant food for wildlife, but he failed. However, around the edges, extra sunlight brought a surprise: wildflowers. “I came back and there were colors everywhere — crazy-looking plants,” he says. Now he knows their names: butterfly weed, blazing star, rattlesnake master.
After posting photos on Facebook, a local botanist, Kevin England, emailed him and pointed out rare species like Alabama larkspur. Lybarger realized he had ruined (毁坏) a native seed bank just to plant non-native species. “That’s when the light bulb went off: managing for biodiversity (生物多样性) is the best option.”
He learned that the Southeast once had vast grasslands, but fire-control policies allowed forests to dominate. His goal became saving the existing grasslands. He put up signs on private land to protect rare gladecress and raised over $100,000 by selling T-shirts to buy a 24-acre space for the leafy prairie clover.
He believes his biggest contribution is educating people on social media to plant native plants. “One person, one yard can make a big difference,” he says.
4. What allows Lybarger to offer free care for rare plants on private land?
A. His experience in forestry. B. His social media income.
C. Payment from landowners. D. Support from the local government.
5. Why did Lybarger clear the open rocky area at first?
A. To attract more wild animals. B. To build a tower for watching animals.
C. To create a firebreak to prevent wildfires. D. To plant native grasses for the landowners.
6. What can be inferred about Lybarger before Kevin England emailed him?
A. He had a degree in biology. B. He had managed grasslands for biodiversity.
C. He already knew the names of the plants. D. He knew little about the seed bank and rare plants.
7. What may Lybarger consider his biggest contribution?
A. Teaching people to grow native plants. B. Offering protection for a native seed bank.
C. Raising money for a plant-protection program. D. Becoming an influencer on social media.

Do you often believe you’ve mastered a key point the moment it “clicks” in your mind? Many of us naturally think that learning is done once a formula makes sense or a text becomes clear. But real learning is far less quick and much harder than that.
The first time you meet new material, you are not learning — you are just recognizing. You map unfamiliar material, notice basic patterns and get a general idea of what it is about. This stage feels productive, but it is just an introduction, not mastery.
The second pass brings you familiarity. Things that once confused you seem less difficult now. You can follow the material and know what comes next. But this familiarity can be misleading: It gives you the wrong feeling of understanding without real depth.
When you go over the material the third time, things start to change. You begin to notice gaps in your knowledge, and find your past understanding is not sound. Passive learning turns into active questioning at this point.
The fourth pass is where real learning starts. You no longer just focus on what the material says. You start to think about why it says so, how it works and where you can apply it. You connect ideas, retell knowledge in your own words, and test it in new situations. Now knowledge becomes flexible, not something you only memorize but something you can use.
Most people stop too early, and modern fast learning also makes repetition (重复) seem unhelpful. But repetition is improvement, not wasted effort. Learning is a spiral (螺旋式上升过程) rather than a straight line—each time you revisit the same material, you discover something new, because you have grown, not because the material has changed.
8. What problem does the second pass of learning cause?
A. You lose interest in the material. B. You will forget the material quickly.
C. You start to question your knowledge. D. You get a wrong feeling of deep understanding.
9. What will you get in the fourth pass of learning?
A. The ability to know what comes next. B. A general idea of the learning material.
C. The ability to use the knowledge flexibly. D. A realization of your knowledge gaps.
10. Which of the following might the author agree with about learning?
A. Most people can reach the fourth pass easily.
B. Fast learning helps develop true experts.
C. Learning is a straight line from simple to difficult.
D. Repetition makes a contribution to deep understanding.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Trouble with Familiarity B. Reviewing Lessons Needs Good Methods
C. Real Learning Starts on the Fourth Pass D. The Importance of Learning New Knowledge
D
Have you ever thought about where your empty plastic drink bottle ends up after you throw it away? A research team from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, has come up with a new idea: old plastic can be turned into life-saving medicine for Parkinson’s disease.
The medicine they produced is levodopa, known as the “gold standard” treatment for Parkinson’s patients. Parkinson’s disease usually causes movement problems such as shaky hands and difficulty walking, and levodopa is the most widely used medicine to ease these problems. The raw material for the new production method is polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a common material for plastic bottles.
The team used specially engineered Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria to complete the transformation in an environmentally friendly way. Not only could the new method help put a dent in (however small) our plastic pollution problem, but it also opens a new path for green medicine development. Traditional levodopa production depends heavily on fossil fuels (化石燃料), and produces a lot of industrial waste.
The process is not as simple as feeding a plastic bottle into a machine to get pills directly. First, PET is broken down into small components, including terephthalic acid (TPA). Researchers built new metabolic (代谢的) reaction pathways in E. coli, letting two different strains (菌株) of the bacteria turn TPA into levodopa step by step. The whole reaction runs at room temperature, without the high heat and pressure needed in traditional chemical production.
Right now, the technology is only a proof-of-concept tested in the lab, and needs more research to meet industrial production standards. Researchers note that even if all global levodopa is produced this way, it won’t solve the problem of 100 million tons of plastic waste being thrown away every year, but it opens a new door for turning waste into valuable resources.
12. What can we learn about levodopa?
A. It is a kind of fossil fuel.
B. It is a new treatment for movement problems.
C. It is an effective medicine for Parkinson’s patients.
D. It is a common material for producing plastic bottles.
13. What do the underlined words “put a dent in” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Reduce the influence of. B. Put an end to.
C. Draw public attention to. D. Make full use of.
14. What is the benefit of the new production technology?
A. It will greatly lower the production costs of levodopa.
B. It will cut down the use of fossil fuels in making levodopa.
C. It will fully solve the global plastic pollution problem.
D. It will produce better levodopa than traditional methods.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A. To call on people to stop using plastic bottles.
B. To question traditional methods of medicine production.
C. To explain how to treat Parkinson’s disease correctly.
D. To introduce a new technology of turning waste into treasure.

B 5. A 6. D 7. A

根据第二段“About a decade ago, Lybarger was managing a private forest where the owner let him hunt, and he wanted to attract more deer. He cleared an open rocky area to plant food for wildlife, but he failed.(大约十年前,莱巴格经营着一片私人森林,主人允许他狩猎,他希望吸引更多鹿。他清理了一片开阔的岩石地带,用来种植野生动物的食物,但未能成功)”可知,他最初清理岩石地是为了吸引野生动物。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段 “After posting photos on Facebook, a local botanist, Kevin England, emailed him and pointed out rare species like Alabama larkspur. Lybarger realized he had ruined (毁坏) a native seed bank just to plant non-native species.(他在脸书发布照片后,当地植物学家凯文·英格兰给他发邮件,指出阿拉巴马飞燕草这类珍稀物种。莱巴格这才意识到,他为了种植外来物种,毁掉了本土种子库)”可推断,收到邮件前他几乎不了解种子库和珍稀植物。

D 9. C 10. D 11. C
根据文章第三段“But this familiarity can be misleading: It gives you the wrong feeling of understanding without real depth. (但这种熟悉感可能会产生误导:它给你一种没有真正深度的错误理解感。)”可知,第二遍学习带来的熟悉感会让人产生一种虚假的、缺乏深度的理解感,即“错误的深度理解感觉”。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第五段“You connect ideas, retell knowledge in your own words, and test it in new situations. Now knowledge becomes flexible, not something you only memorize but something you can use. (你将想法联系起来,用自己的话重述知识,并在新的情境中检验它。现在知识变得灵活了,不再是你仅仅记住的东西,而是你能使用的东西。)”可知,在第四遍学习中,你将获得灵活运用知识的能力。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“But repetition is improvement, not wasted effort. Learning is a spiral (螺旋式上升过程) rather than a straight line—each time you revisit the same material, you discover something new, because you have grown, not because the material has changed.
C 13. A 14. B 15. D

根据第二段“The medicine they produced is levodopa, known as the “gold standard” treatment for Parkinson’s patients. Parkinson’s disease usually causes movement problems such as shaky hands and difficulty walking, and levodopa is the most widely used medicine to ease these problems. (他们生产的药物是左旋多巴,被称为帕金森病患者“黄金标准”的治疗药物。帕金森病通常会导致手部震颤和行走困难等运动障碍,而左旋多巴是缓解这些症状最常用的药物。)”可知,左旋多巴是治疗帕金森患者的有效药物。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“Not only could the new method help put a dent in (however small) our plastic pollution problem, but it also opens a new path for green medicine development. (这种新方法不仅有助于____塑料污染问题(尽管效果有限),还为绿色医药发展开辟了新途径。)”以及最后一段“Researchers note that even if all global levodopa is produced this way, it won’t solve the problem of 100 million tons of plastic waste being thrown away every year, but it opens a new door for turning waste into valuable resources. (研究人员指出,即使全球所有左旋多巴都以这种方式生产,也无法解决每年产生1亿吨塑料垃圾的问题,但它为将废弃物转化为有价值的资源开辟了一扇新门。)”可知,该方法只能在一定程度上减轻塑料污染,不能彻底解决。put a dent in意为“减轻……的影响”,对应A选项 Reduce the influence of。
根据第三段“Traditional levodopa production depends heavily on fossil fuels (化石燃料), and produces a lot of industrial waste. (传统左旋多巴的生产高度依赖化石燃料,并且会产生大量工业废料。)” 可知,新技术可以减少生产左旋多巴过程中化石燃料的使用。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“A research team from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, has come up with a new idea: old plastic can be turned into life-saving medicine for Parkinson’s disease. (来自苏格兰爱丁堡大学的研究团队提出了一项新思路:废旧塑料可转化为治疗帕金森病的救命药物。)”结合全文围绕“废弃塑料制药”的新技术展开,从成果、原理、优势、发展前景等角度对该技术进行介绍,核心目的是向读者介绍这项变废为宝的新技术。
