根据第一段的“the cute and cuddly creature has just been brought back from the edge of extinction”以及后文“growing by 17 percent”可知,此处指大熊猫的数量增长了17%,population“数量”,为名词作宾语。 根据后文“Nearly two-thirds of all wild pandas live there”可知,此处指保护区的数量,reserves“保护区”,为reserve的复数形式,作主语。 Ⅲ. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have read. (A) For a long time, people imagined trees as independent giants — silent witnesses of history, standing firmly through storms and seasons. Poets and philosophers often described them as symbols of endurance, wisdom, or even loneliness. But modern research invites us to see trees in a new light: not as isolated individuals, but as members of a networked, cooperative, and communicative community. Scientists have discovered that trees are deeply connected to one another, both above and below the ground. High in the forest canopy (树冠), leaves send out chemical signals when attacked by insects, warning nearby trees to defend themselves. Underground, a vast web of fungi called mycorrhizal networks links tree roots together, allowing them to share water, nutrients, and information. Through these connections, healthy trees can support weaker ones, and even dying “Mother Trees” pass on resources to the next generation. This perspective breaks away from the old romantic image of the lone tree. Instead, forests appear more like societies, where survival depends on cooperation as much as competition. Just as humans rely on families, friends, and communities, trees also thrive through cooperation. They show us that strength in nature is not only about standing tall alone, but also about being part of a greater whole. The new vision of trees also leads us to philosophical questions. Can trees be considered intelligent if they react to their environment and communicate with one another? They have no brains, nerves, or senses like humans, yet they demonstrate strategies for survival that seem surprisingly sophisticated. Some scientists hesitate to use words like “intelligence” or “awareness,” but it is clear that trees show forms of interaction we once believed only animals could achieve: Understanding trees as social beings challenges us to rethink our relationship with nature. Forests are not silent backgrounds to human life; they are living communities with lessons to offer. By observing how trees share, communicate, and adapt together, we may learn something valuable about cooperation, resilience, and the balance needed in our own societies. 36. What is the function of mycorrhizal networks underground? A. They prevent insects from damaging roots. B. They protect trees from storms and winds. C. They help trees grow taller by supporting the trunks. D. They connect trees, allowing the sharing of resources. 37. What can be inferred about “Mother Trees”? A. They are symbolic rather than real. B. They have special senses that detect danger. C. They give up resources for the survival of younger trees D. They are the tallest trees among all the trees in the forest. 38. Which best summarizes the new vision of trees presented in the passage? A. Trees are intelligent life forms equal to humans. B. Trees survive by competing for light and water. C. Trees live as part of interconnected systems that share and cooperate. D. Trees should be admired mainly for their beauty, strength and loneliness. 39. What is the author’s attitude toward the idea of trees as social beings? A. Strongly against it. B. Supportive and reflective C. Neutral and uninterested. D. Doubtful but open-minded. D 37. C 38. C 39. 根据第二段“Underground, a vast web of fungi called mycorrhizal networks links tree roots together, allowing them to share water, nutrients, and information. (在地下,存在着一个庞大的真菌网络——被称为菌根网络,它将树木的根系连接在一起,使它们能够共享水分、养分和信息。)”可知,地下菌根网络的作用是将树木连接起来,使树木能够共享资源。故选D。 【37题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“Through these connections, healthy trees can support weaker ones, and even dying “Mother Trees” pass on resources to the next generation. (通过这些联系,健康的树木能够为较弱的树木提供养分,甚至那些濒临死亡的“母树”也会将资源传递给下一代树木。)”可知,“母树”会为幼树的存活而放弃自身资源。故选C。 【38题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段“But modern research invites us to see trees in a new light: not as isolated individuals, but as members of a networked, cooperative, and communicative community. (但现代研究让我们对树木有了全新的认识:它们不再被视为孤立的个体,而是在一个相互连接、相互合作且相互交流的群体中存在着。)”可知,树木作为相互关联的系统的一部分而存在,它们会共享资源并相互协作。故选C。 【39题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Understanding trees as social beings challenges us to rethink our relationship with nature. Forests are not silent backgrounds to human life; they are living communities with lessons to offer. By observing how trees share, communicate, and adapt together, we may learn something valuable about cooperation, resilience, and the balance needed in our own societies. (将树木视为具有社会属性的生物,促使我们重新审视人与自然的关系。森林并非人类生活的无声背景,而是充满生机的生物群落,蕴含着诸多启示。通过观察树木如何相互分享、交流和共同适应,我们或许能从中领悟到有关合作、适应力以及我们自身社会所需平衡的重要道理。)”可知,作者对将树木视为社会生物这一观点是支持且有所反思态度。故选B。 (B) Today’s youth are different from generations who came before in several important ways. For example, they are more diverse, educated, connected and socially engaged overall than previous generations. Here are some of the data. More Diverse In 2016, 27 percent of teens and young adults aged 15 to 34 identified themselves as a member of a visible minority group, compared with 13 percent in 1996, and almost 75 percent of youth have friends from another ethnic (种族的) group. More Educated As of 2018, 97 percent of 15-year-olds were in school. Also, in 2016, only 9 percent of men and 5 percent of women aged 25 to 34 did not complete high school, compared to 22 percent and 19 percent, respectively, in 1997. More Connected Nearly 100 percent of youth aged 15 to 24 use the Internet daily. The negative side to connectedness is an increase in how youth report experiencing online abuse. Of youth aged 15 to 34, 15 percent said they had that experience in the past five years. Social exclusion is another notable problem, with 16 percent of young men and 12 percent of young women reporting in 2016 that they had experienced at least one aspect of social isolation. Less Healthy Me Individuals aged 15 to 30 years old are reporting lower levels of mental health compared to older Canadians. In 2011 and 2012, 74 percent of 15-to 30-year-old females reported excellent or very good mental health, but by 2019 that percentage had declined to 54 percent. By 2020, only 40 percent of youth overall reported good levels of mental health. The negative effects of social media may explain some of this decline. Tips for Coping with the Challenges of Today The big challenges facing teens today are related to social media use and feeling disconnected. These issues include abuse on the Internet, social exclusion, mental health challenges, addiction and academic performance. Here are some ways teens can cope with the pressures of being online. 1. Report upsetting things that you see. If you see something posted online upsetting or disturbing, remember to report the post to the platform. 2. Control who you follow… and who you don’t. Your feed is under your control. You can unfollow accounts that post things upsetting to you. 3. Remember that what you see isn’t always real. Whether you’re talking about photos or stories, people often only show what they want others to see. Try to see past the online illusion (错觉). 4. Free yourself from addiction to follows, likes and reposts. We all want others to like what we have to say or the photos we post, because we all want to be liked. But self-respect doesn’t have to depend on someone’s click of a like button. 40. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Social media harms mental health. B. Youth face unique online challenges. C. Tips for better academic performance. D. Youth today differ from past generations. 41. In terms of education, how are today’s youth different from those in 1997? A. Less educated overall. B. More likely to drop out. C. Higher school attendance. D. More women unfinished school. 42. If a teen sees disturbing content online, what should they do? A. Ignore it. B. Report the post. C. Follow fewer accounts. D. Stop using the Internet. D 41. C 42. 根据表格中More Educated部分“As of 2018, 97 percent of 15-year-olds were in school. Also, in 2016, only 9 percent of men and 5 percent of women aged 25 to 34 did not complete high school, compared to 22 percent and 19 percent, respectively, in 1997.(截至2018年,97%的15岁青少年在上学。此外,在2016年,只有9%的25至34岁男性和5%的女性没有完成高中学业,而1997年的比例分别为22%和19%)”可知,与1997年相比,如今的青少年入学率更高(97%在校),完成高中学业的比例也更高(未完成比例大幅下降),即就学率更高。 【42题详解】 细节理解题。根据1.Report upsetting things that you see.部分中“If you see something posted online upsetting or disturbing, remember to report the post to the platform.(如果你看到网上发布的令人沮丧或不安的内容,记得向平台举报该帖子)”可知,如果青少年看到令人不安的网络内容,应该举报该帖子。 (C) There will eventually come a day when the New York Times ceases to publish stories on newsprint. Exactly when that day will be is a matter of debate. “Sometime in the future,” the paper’s publisher said back in 2010. Nostalgia (怀旧) for ink on paper, there are plenty of reasons to abandon print. The infrastructure (基础设施) required to make a physical newspaper — printing presses, delivery trucks—isn’t just expensive; it’s excessive at a time when online-only competitors don’t have the same set of financial restrictions. Readers are migrating away from print anyway. And though print ad sales still overshadow their online and mobile counterparts, revenue (收入) from print is still declining. Cost may be high and circulation lower, but rushing to eliminate its print edition would be a mistake, says Buzz Feed CEO Jonah Peretti. Peretti says the Times shouldn’t waste time getting out of the print business, but only if they go about doing it the right way. “Figuring out a way to accelerate that transition would make sense for them,” he said, “but if you discontinue it, you’re going to have your most loyal customers really upset with you.” Sometimes that’s worth making a change anyway. Peretti gives the example of Netflix discontinuing its DVD-mailing service to focus on streaming (流媒体). “It was seen as a mistake,” he said. The move turned out to be foresighted. “If I were in charge at the Times, I wouldn’t pick a year to end print,” Peretti said “I would raise prices and make it into more of a legacy product.” The most loyal customers would still get the product they favor, the idea goes, and they’d feel like that they were helping maintain the quality of something they believe in. “So if you’re overpaying for print, you could feel like that you were helping,” Peretti said. “Then increase it at a higher rate each year and essentially try to generate additional revenue.” In other words, if you’re going to print product, make it for the people who are already obsessed with it, which may be what the Times is doing already. Getting the print edition seven days a week costs nearly $500 a year-more than twice as much as a digital-only subscription. “It’s a really hard thing to do and it’s a tremendous luxury that Buzz Feed doesn’t have a legacy business,” Peretti remarked. But we’re going to have questions like that where we have things we’re doing that don’t make sense when the market changes and the world changes. In those situations, it’s better to be more aggressive than less aggressive. 43. The New York Times is considering ending its print edition partly due to ________. A. the high cost of operation B. the pressure from its investors C. the complaints from its readers D. the increasing online ad sales 44. Peretti suggests that in face of the present situation the Times should ________. A. seek new sources of readership B. end the print edition for good C. aim for efficient management D. make strategic adjustments 45. It can be inferred from Paragraph 5 and Paragraph 6 that a “legacy product” ________. A. helps restore the glory of former times. B. is meant for the most loyal customers. C. will have the cost of printing reduced. D. expands the popularity of the paper. 46. Peretti believes that in a changing world ________. A. legacy businesses are becoming outdated B. cautiousness helps problem-solving C. traditional luxuries can stay unaffected D. aggressiveness better meets challenge 【答案】43. A 44. D 45. B 46. 根据第二段“The infrastructure (基础设施) required to make a physical newspaper — printing presses, delivery trucks—isn’t just expensive(制作实体报纸所需的基础设施——印刷机、送货卡车——不仅仅是昂贵)”可知,运作的高昂费用是造成《纽约时报》正在考虑终止印刷版的部分原因。 根据第四段““Figuring out a way to accelerate that transition would make sense for them,” he said, “but if you discontinue it, you’re going to have your most loyal customers really upset with you.”(“找出一种加快这一转变的方法对他们来说是合理的,”他说,“但如果你停止了,你最忠诚的客户就会非常生气。”)” 根据第五段“I would raise prices and make it into more of a legacy product.(我会提高价格,将其打造成一种传承型产品)”以及第六段“The most loyal customers would still get the product they favor, the idea goes, and they’d feel like that they were helping maintain the quality of something they believe in. In those situations, it’s better to be more aggressive than less aggressive.(但我们会遇到这样的问题,当市场变化和世界变化时,我们所做的事情是没有意义的。在这种情况下,进取比不进取要好)”可知,在这个日益变化的世界,进取能更好地迎接挑战。 Section C Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. Why should mankind explore space? Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup as human beings. What prompted our distant ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? ____47____. The wider the distribution of a species, the better its chance of survival. Exploration also allows minerals and other potential resources to be located. Additional resources are always beneficial when used wisely, and can increase our chances of survival. Knowledge or techniques acquired through exploration, or preparing to explore, filter from the developers into society at large. ____48____. Also, we have already benefited from other by-products, including improvements in earthquake prediction — which has saved many lives — in satellites used for weather forecasting and in communications systems. Even non-stick saucepans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products of technological developments in the space industry! ____49____. The chances of a large comet (彗星) hitting the Earth are small, but it could happen in time. Such strikes in the past may account for the extinction of dinosaurs and other species. Human technology is reaching the point where it might be able to detect the possibility of this happening, and enable us to minimize the damage, or prevent it completely, allowing us as a species to avoid extinction. In certain circumstances, life on Earth may become impossible: over-population or widespread diseases, for instance, might eventually force us to find other places to live. While the earth is the only planet known to sustain life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to inhabit other planets and moons. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future. ____50____ A. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. B. Space allows us to expand and succeed: for the sake of everyone on the earth, now and in the future, space exploration is essential. C. The mysterious space objects varying in size have fascinated scientists and scholars for years. D. It appears that we are driven to ensure the success and continuation of not just our own genes, but of the species as a whole. E. Therefore, it still poses a problem for us human beings whether to explore space at the cost of our own homelands F. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. D 48. A 49. F 50. 【47题详解】 上文“What prompted our distant ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments?(是什么促使我们遥远的祖先从树上搬到平原,又进入所有可能的地方和环境?)” 空处和前文为顺接关系,说明人类不断探索的深层原因,且后文“The wider the distribution of a species, the better its chance of survival.(一个物种的分布越广,其生存的机会就越大)”是对空处的进一步解释。 【48题详解】 上文“Knowledge or techniques acquired through exploration, or preparing to explore, filter from the developers into society at large.(通过探索或准备探索获得的知识或技术从开发者传播到整个社会中)”说明了探索带来的技术会向社会扩散。 A项中的“The techniques”与前文“Knowledge or techniques”相呼应,且后文“Also, we have already benefited from other by-products, including improvements in earthquake prediction — which has saved many lives — in satellites used for weather forecasting and in communications systems.(此外,我们已经从其他太空技术副产品中获益,包括已挽救大量生命的地震预测技术改进、天气预报用卫星的改进以及通信系统的改进)”进一步列举了技术应用,与A项构成递进关系。 【49题详解】 下文“The chances of a large comet hitting the Earth are small, but it could happen in time. Such strikes in the past may account for the extinction of dinosaurs and other species.(一颗大彗星撞击地球的几率很小,但迟早可能发生。过去的这种撞击可能导致了恐龙和其他物种的灭绝)”提到了太空存在天体撞击的危险。空处位于段首,需概括全段主旨。所以F项“虽然太空可能拥有许多奇迹,以及关于宇宙如何形成或如何运作的解释,但它也隐藏着危险。”符合语境。F项中的dangers与后文“comet hitting”相呼应,且while引导的让步状语从句承上启下,既承接了前文探索太空的积极意义,又引出了本段对危险的论述。 【50题详解】 上文“It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future.(诚然,生活方式会有所不同,但人类生活和文明在过去已经适应,未来也肯定能适应)”说明了人类有能力适应其他星球的生活。 Ⅳ. (B) Today’s youth are different from generations who came before in several important ways. (C) There will eventually come a day when the New York Times ceases to publish stories on newsprint. A. legacy businesses are becoming outdated B. cautiousness helps problem-solving C. traditional luxuries can stay unaffected D. aggressiveness better meets challenge Section C Directions: Read the following passage. Ⅳ.
