At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy (书法), my teacher told me plainly, “Now I will teach you how to write your name, and to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch. I was curious.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old”, “barley (薏米)” and “warm”.
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I put on an American accent and abandoned my Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage? I thought.
My idea was just to copy the old masters’ techniques in calligraphy, thereby refining my own. Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably on-the-nose comments of my person. “You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Have confidence. Try to produce a bold stroke (笔画).” For years, I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed me.
I was trying to make sense of this practice. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own cultural limits. Could it help me go beyond mine? I had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully.
During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me, “This word is much better. I can see the choices you made. Trust yourself. This word is yours.” He might as well have said, “This word is you.”
24. What did the author originally think of her name “Chen Yiwen”?
A. She accepted it for its lucky symbolic meaning.
B. She felt proud of its symbolic meaning.
C. She understood the intention but still disliked it.
D. She felt embarrassed for its strange pronunciation.
25. Why did the author decide to learn calligraphy?
A. To pick up a new hobby.
B. To reconnect with her origin.
C. To gain insights into a new culture.
D. To fit in with local community.
26. What does the author learn about calligraphy from the teacher’s words?
A. It reflects the creator’s transformation. B. It improves quickly.
C. It highlights the design of strokes. D. It depends on continuous practice.
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Appreciate the Beauty of Chinese Calligraphy
B. My Journey of Knowing Myself Through Calligraphy
C. A Meaningful Lesson from My Calligraphy Teacher
D. The Story Behind My Chinese Name

On holiday, many will find themselves in places where they do not speak the language. Once upon a time, they might have carried a phrase book. But now, many simple, free apps are good news for those travellers. With these apps’ conversation mode, people talk into a phone and a spoken translation is heard moments later. Maybe the best-known app is Google Translate, though small mistakes can happen due to its word-for-word translation.
Surprisingly, the best tool may not be a translation app at all. Though not marketed for that, ChatGPT, a generative AI system, can write messages in different languages, producing natural output like a native speaker.
As AI translation becomes an even more popular labour-saving tool, society may divide into two groups. There will be those who want to fully experience other cultures. This group will still take on language study, often aided by technology. Others will look at learning a new language with a different attitude: “Good for you, if that’s your thing, but a bit painful for my taste.” After all, most people do not move abroad or have an opportunity to experience a foreign culture deeply. On their holiday, they may just want a beer and spaghetti (意大利面).
As a result, some experts are concerned that AI is leading to a decreasing interest in language learning. Writer Douglas Hofstadter has argued that something meaningful will disappear when people communicate through machines. He describes giving a disconnected, difficult speech in Chinese, which required a lot of work but offered a sense of achievement at the end. Who would boast (吹嘘) of taking a helicopter to the top of Mount Qomolangma?
While AI translation seems practical, we must recognize the social nature of language. When trying to ask directions in broken Japanese or make a joke in awkward German, you are making direct contact with someone. The best relationships do not require a third party.
28. Which of the following best describes translation apps?
A. Free but complex. B. Quick but imperfect.
C. Creative but costly. D. Simple but time-consuming.
29. Why does the writer mention “beer and spaghetti” in paragraph 3?
A. To present a conclusion. B. To suggest a possible situation.
C. To offer a simple excuse. D. To provide another choice.
30. What can be inferred from Douglas Hofstadter’s opinion?
A. Learning a foreign language proves less attractive.
B. Reaching Mount Qomolangma by helicopter is fairly effortless.
C. Using a foreign language independently is truly worthwhile.
D. Making a speech in another language proves quite challenging.
31. What is the social nature of language according to the text?
A. Connection between language users. B. Dependence on AI translation.
C. Communication with the third party. D. Exchange of cultural information.

In a pool, a duck can look calm when smoothly swimming on the water’s surface while moving really fast just below the surface to stay up. Like ducks, students appear to move gracefully. They are seen socializing in cafés, seemingly without any stress or the need to study. However, at night, they start studying, sometimes for the whole night, trying to keep the image of effortless success.
At top universities, this phenomenon is known as “Stanford Duck Syndrome (综合征)”. This comes at a high price: tiredness and anxiety are widespread. Furthermore, it leads to a common wrong idea: true talents achieve success effortlessly, while those working hard show low ability.
In an effort to challenge this misunderstanding, researchers designed an experiment. Students taking part in the experiment were asked to observe a series of colors carefully while scientists tracked their brain activity throughout the process. As the difficulty of the task increased, there was a noticeable increase in brain activity, particularly in areas linked to memory and abstract reasoning (抽象推理).
The study shows that as tasks require more effort, more areas of the brain “light up” and get to work. Growth doesn’t come from talent alone but from the continuous application of effort. Our brain functions like a muscle. Without effort, even our inborn talents will atrophy over time.
This pushes us to reconsider the culture behind that might lead to this phenomenon. Instead of focusing too much on results or praising highly for inborn talents, we should stress the learning process and continuous improvement. By encouraging a different culture that values effort, we can help students realize that intelligence is not fixed but grows through hard work. Such a change would not only reduce the stresses related to the “Stanford Duck Syndrome”, but also have a big effect on personal development and the future of education.
32. What does “Stanford Duck Syndrome” refer to?
A. A social tendency toward café get-togethers.
B. Students appearing relaxed but struggling secretly.
C. A health issue leading to physical tiredness.
D. Students keeping a graceful image but avoiding real effort.
33. What was a key finding of the experiment?
A. Brain activity improves with task difficulty.
B. Tough tasks are frightening for students.
C. Color recognition occurs independently of memory.
D. Easier tasks are beneficial to abstract reasoning.
34. What does the underlined word “atrophy” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Improve. B. Remain. C. Weaken. D. Spread.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards the culture behind the syndrome?
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Indifferent. D. Negative.

B
【答案】24. C 25. B 26. A 27. B
【解析】
【导语】本文主要讲述作者学习中国书法的经历,借书法练习重拾文化根源,并在过程中不断认识自我。
【24题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old”, “barley (薏米)” and “warm”.(我在新加坡长大,和我的中文名字有着特殊的渊源。我的父母是华裔,他们请算命先生为我取名,以求带来最大好运。于是,我给自己取了一个毫无意义又尴尬的名字:陈薏温,意思大致是“陈旧”、“薏米”、“温暖”)”可知,作者明白父母取名是为求好运,但名字本身让她感到尴尬,也就是理解用意却仍然不喜欢这个名字。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage? I thought.(在美国生活14年后,2021年我搬到香港,决定学习书法。我心想,何不重新接触自己的文化本源呢?)”可知,作者学习书法的初衷是重新联结自身的文化根源。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably on-the-nose comments of my person. “You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Have confidence. Try to produce a bold stroke (笔画).” For years, I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed me.(然而每周,老师都会给出精准得令人不适的、针对我本人的评价。“你需要更大胆,”他曾说道。“要有自信,试着写出有力的笔画。”多年来,我一直以自信的形象自居,但我的字迹暴露了真实的自己。)”以及第六段中的“During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me, “This word is much better. I can see the choices you made. Trust yourself. This word is yours.” He might as well have said, “This word is you.”(最近一堂课上,老师指着我刚写完的字对我说:“这个字好多了,我能看到你的取舍。相信自己,这个字属于你。”他几乎等同于在说:“这个字就是你。”)”可知,书法能够反映书写者真实的状态与变化,反映创作者自身的转变。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第五段中的“I had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully.(我学习书法本是为接触文化根源,但我真正追寻的是回归自我。如今我感受到,书法带来的乐趣让我更完整地认识自己。)”可知,文章讲述作者学习书法,原本想重拾文化本源,最终在书法练习的过程中不断探索、认识自我,所以“My Journey of Knowing Myself Through Calligraphy(我通过书法认识自我的旅程)”最能概括全文核心,适合作为最佳标题。
C
【答案】28. B 29. B 30. C 31. A
【解析】
【导语】本文主要介绍AI翻译工具的优势,探讨其对语言学习的影响,强调语言承载人与人之间直接交流的社会属性。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“With these apps’ conversation mode, people talk into a phone and a spoken translation is heard moments later. Maybe the best-known app is Google Translate, though small mistakes can happen due to its word-for-word translation.(借助这些应用的对话模式,人们对着手机说话,片刻之后就能听到语音翻译。也许最知名的应用是谷歌翻译,但由于逐字翻译,会出现一些小错误。)”可知,翻译软件翻译速度快,但存在缺陷,并不完美。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“After all, most people do not move abroad or have an opportunity to experience a foreign culture deeply. On their holiday, they may just want a beer and spaghetti (意大利面).(毕竟,大多数人不会移居国外,也没有机会深入体验外国文化。度假时,他们可能只是想要一杯啤酒和一份意大利面。)”可知,作者举例描绘一类游客的需求,展示一种可能出现的情形,他们只需要简单交流,不需要学习外语。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“He describes giving a disconnected, difficult speech in Chinese, which required a lot of work but offered a sense of achievement at the end. Who would boast (吹嘘) of taking a helicopter to the top of Mount Qomolangma?(他讲述自己用中文发表一段不连贯且艰难的演讲,这需要付出大量努力,但最终带来成就感。谁会吹嘘乘坐直升机登上珠穆朗玛峰呢?)”可知,Douglas Hofstadter认为独立使用外语交流的过程虽辛苦,但收获的价值是AI翻译无法替代的,这样的经历才真正值得。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。通读全文,尤其是尾段中的“While AI translation seems practical, we must recognize the social nature of language. When trying to ask directions in broken Japanese or make a joke in awkward German, you are making direct contact with someone. The best relationships do not require a third party.(虽然人工智能翻译看似实用,但我们必须认识到语言具有社会性。当你用蹩脚的日语问路,或是用生硬的德语开玩笑时,你正在和他人进行直接交流。最好的关系不需要第三方。)”可知,语言的社会属性体现在语言使用者之间建立直接的联系。
D
D. Negative.
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. C 35. D

【导语】文章主要介绍了“斯坦福鸭子综合征”现象,指出其代价与误解,并强调努力对大脑成长的重要性。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“Like ducks, students appear to move gracefully. They are seen socializing in cafes, seemingly without any stress or the need to study. However, at night, they start studying, sometimes for the whole night, trying to keep the image of effortless success.(像鸭子一样,学生们看起来优雅自如。人们看到他们在咖啡馆社交,似乎没有任何压力,也不需要学习。然而到了晚上,他们开始学习,有时通宵达旦,努力维持轻松成功的形象。)”以及第二段中“At top universities, this phenomenon is known as “Stanford Duck Syndrome (综合征)”.(在顶尖大学,这种现象被称为“斯坦福鸭子综合征”。)”可知,“斯坦福鸭子综合征”指的是学生表面轻松,暗中却在拼命努力。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“As the difficulty of the task increased, there was a noticeable increase in brain activity, particularly in areas linked to memory and abstract reasoning (抽象推理).(随着任务难度的增加,大脑活动明显增强,尤其是在与记忆和抽象推理相关的区域。)”以及第四段中“The study shows that as tasks require more effort, more areas of the brain “light up” and get to work.(研究表明,随着任务需要更多努力,大脑中更多的区域会“亮起来”并开始工作。)”可知,实验的一个关键发现是大脑活动随任务难度增加而增强。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中“Growth doesn’t come from talent alone but from the continuous application of effort. Our brain functions like a muscle. Without effort, even our inborn talents will atrophy over time.(成长不仅仅来自天赋,而是来自持续不断地付出努力。我们的大脑像肌肉一样运作。没有努力,即使是我们与生俱来的天赋也会随着时间推移而atrophy。)”可知,画线词“atrophy”与“像肌肉一样”相呼应,肌肉不锻炼就会萎缩、退化,因此该词意为“退化、衰退”,与“Weaken(减弱)”最接近。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“This pushes us to reconsider the culture behind that might lead to this phenomenon. Instead of focusing too much on results or praising highly for inborn talents, we should stress the learning process and continuous improvement. By encouraging a different culture that values effort, we can help students realize that intelligence is not fixed but grows through hard work.(这促使我们重新思考可能导致这一现象背后的文化。与其过分关注结果或高度赞扬天赋,我们应该强调学习过程和持续进步。通过鼓励一种重视努力的不同文化,我们可以帮助学生认识到智力不是固定的,而是通过努力成长的。)”可知,作者认为导致这一现象的文化需要被重新思考,并主张用重视努力的文化取而代之,说明作者对这种文化持否定态度。

Hi, welcome to my channel. Today I’d like to share our school’s ground painting activity with you. It was held on the playground on September 23rd.
It started with the headmaster’s opening speech, where he encouraged us to show our imagination. What followed was drafting designs and painting, with students cooperating with each other, presenting colourful creative works on the ground. With a group photo taken by all participants, the activity was brought to an end.
I benefited greatly from the activity. It not only helped us escape from heavy academic pressure, but also let me realize how powerful teamwork is.
