There comes a time for every family when the tables are turned and the parent has to answer to the child. Mine came recently when my wife and I stayed with our elder son in Los Angeles. A whole week under his roof!
“Dad, don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth,” Nathaniel told me seriously on our first night. I grabbed extra paper towels to wipe the kitchen counter and was instructed to use the dishcloth. Don’t wear a neck warmer when walking the dogs in the morning — it will warm up when we get to the park. Why drink so much sparkling water (苏打水)? And do you have to take a shower before we drive to Topanga?
At first I wondered how I’d raised an awkward (不好应付的) son. Then I remembered how often I threw the golden rule of parenting at him when he was young. “Someday, you’ll have a home of your own and can live however you want,” I’d say. “Until then, you’ll have to do as we ask.” And so I smilingly did as Nathaniel said, but with a touch of playfulness, like hiding a separate roll of paper towels in the storeroom, or moving one of his favorite photographs a few inches.
There were advantages of following Nathaniel’s advice. He washed the dishes after dinner. He also set up our daily outings. And he willingly drove everywhere, sparing us the pain of Los Angeles’ traffic.
One afternoon, we were walking along El Matador State Beach and hit an extended patch of rocks — clearly the end of the line. Nathaniel guided me across one large stone to the next, patiently telling me where to place my feet and hands as ocean waves came close. I was frightened, but after a couple hundred yards we made it to a fresh sandy beach. “You did it! I’m really proud,” he said. It was then that I knew for sure that the son also rose to fatherhood.
24. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Nathaniel’s various rules. B. The father’s unhealthy lifestyles.
C. Parent-child arguments. D. The father’s forgetfulness.
25. What can we infer about the father from Paragraph 3?
A. He was angry at his son for ordering him around.
B. He understood the role shift between parent and child.
C. He refused to obey his son’s requirements completely.
D. He felt ashamed of being controlled by his child.
26. According to the last paragraph, what should a father be?
A. Strict and humorous. B. Selfless and open-minded.
C. Adventurous and ambitious. D. Patient and encouraging .
27. What does the author’s experience show?
A. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. B. Practice makes perfect.
C. East or west, home is best. D. The student becomes the teacher.
C
Have you thought about how an animal that loses a leg can still run quickly without falling? A new study shows that the secret isn’t just about simple biology-it holds the key to solving some of our most difficult engineering challenges in modern science.
Researchers at Temple University set out to understand how the wolf spiders naturally adapt after losing legs in the wild. Using high-speed cameras, they carefully recorded the spiders’ movements before and after they lost two legs in controlled lab conditions. The discovery is amazing: the spiders almost at once rehabilitated their former running speed and stability (稳定性), with little change to their step length.
The secret lies in the spiders’ ability to switch (转变) between different walking ways without needing to learn through practice, which is known as “robust motion control”. Instead of keeping to one fixed way, the spiders use a mixed-use way. For example, they might use a three-legged way, and then switch to a four-legged way during the same run. They also cleverly change their movements by using their strongest back legs as the main pushing power and spreading their remaining legs wider to keep balance.
This is valuable for human inventions, especially in the field of robotics. Today, a robot that suffers damage to a leg or motor often stops moving completely. However, by copying the spiders’ special skills, engineers hope to create the next generation of robots. The new robots can be designed just like the spiders and even act well in a leg-lost situation.
These future machines would be able to change their movements after suffering damage, continuing their tasks without pause. This would make them perfect for dangerous work in challenging environments, such as exploring other planets or working deep underwater. Therefore, the small spider is really a good teacher and inspires us to develop new technology to deal with the difficulties in our real life and make a breakthrough in some related fields.
28. What does the underlined word “rehabilitate” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Got back. B. Lost out. C. Gave up. D. Slowed down.
29. What does the study find about the spiders after they lost legs?
A. They go through a long time of learning.
B. They use an unchanging way of moving.
C. They switch between different moving ways.
D. Their speed and stability suffer damage.
30. What can we learn about the next generation of robots from the last paragraph?
A. They will replace humans in time.
B. They will teach humans new technology.
C. They will be able to think by themselves.
D. They will do dangerous work for humans.
31. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To explore the lifestyle of the wolf spider.
B. To describe a scientific experiment on spiders.
C. To argue that spiders are the smartest animals.
D. To show how spider biology helps humans in robotics.
D
Playwright George Bernard Shaw once said that the US and the UK are “two countries divided by a common language”. Oscar Wilde, the famous playwright and poet, said, “We have really everything in common with America nowadays, except, of course, the language.” These quotes are reminders of the differences between the two countries’ varieties of English.
When British settlers first arrived in America centuries ago, they brought their language with them. Over time, American English held onto some older pronunciations that later disappeared in Britain. For example, Americans clearly pronounced the “r” in words like “fire”, while many British speakers softened it or dropped it entirely. This difference gave each accent (口音) its unique sound, making it easy to tell where someone was from.
New words also entered American English as settlers encountered unfamiliar landscapes and cultures. They borrowed terms from Native American languages for animals like “raccoons” and “moose”, as well as objects like “moccasins”. Later, settlers from Spain, Germany, and other countries brought words like “cookie” (from Dutch), “kindergarten” (from German), and “cilantro” (from Spanish). These additions made the American vocabulary richer and more diverse.
Perhaps the most noticeable differences are in spelling. In the 1800s, British scholars (学者) created a dictionary to record English words as they were spoken in Britain. Meanwhile, American language expert Noah Webster wanted spelling to be simpler and more logical, which led to several changes. For example, Americans dropped the “u” in words like “color” (instead of the British “colour”) or changed “re” to “er” in words like “center” (instead of “centre”). These changes made American spelling easier and more standard.
Though the two countries are separated by an ocean, both types of English continue to influence each other. British films, music, and literature are widely enjoyed in America, while American pop culture has also made its mark on British society. Their differences remain a reminder of how language adapts as people and cultures grow apart. What started as the same language now carries the unique history of two nations.
32. Why are George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To suggest making a full change in English.
B. To prove their different views about English.
C. To explain the development of English in both countries.
D. To show the differences in American and British English.
33. What happened after British settlers arrived in America?
A. They gave up many terms in favor of new ones.
B. They quickly formed a special American accent.
C. They developed a new language with the help of locals.
D. They kept old pronunciations and borrowed new words.
34. How did Noah Webster help develop American English?
A. He added many new words to American English.
B. He set a standard for American English spelling.
C. He made American movies more popular in Britain.
D. He recorded English words that were spoken in Britain.
35. What is the best title of the text?
A. The simplifying process of American English.
B. The Influence of American Culture on Britain.
C. The historical development of American English.
D. The importance of English in global communication.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Life as a student can be non-stop: homework, exams, and responsibilities often take over, and the things that truly cheer you up get pushed aside. When that happens, try spending some quiet time alone and ask yourself: What did I love doing as a kid? 36 It’s simple, but it’s a good start to rediscover your hobbies and interests.
Have you ever been so into a game, drawing, or music that you completely forgot the passage of time? That’s what is called the flow state (心流). 37 I might find it on my skates, while you might find it through basketball or writing stories. When you enter this state, it lifts your general happiness.
Even so, many of us feel bad for taking time for hobbies. We’re often pressured to live in a certain way: study hard, make good achievements, and always stay busy. However, if you keep pushing yourself without a break, you’ll finally run out of gas. 38 But you’ll get used to it. Having a hobby isn’t a waste of time — it’s a way to renew your energy.
The good news is that you don’t need hours of free time to enjoy your hobbies. If what you love isn’t something you can do during the day, look for tiny moments of joy. 39 You could also play basketball for ten minutes after school. These small breaks become little islands of peace in a busy student life.
40 Start small, stay kind to yourself, and remember: this isn’t selfish (自私的) — it’s self-care. Being calm, happy, and at peace is your right as a human being.
A. So, make time to do what you love.
B. You could read a few pages before bed.
C. This state of mind is a little difficult to achieve.
D. You may realize how much fun you have missed.
E. The path to it, though, is different for everyone.
F. Learning to feel comfortable caring for yourself takes time.
G. Take your pen and paper, and note down what makes you feel alive.

Dear Ben,
Sorry to hear that you were criticized by your teacher for using AI to complete your homework, I’m writing to share my thoughts on this matter and offer some advice.
From my perspective, while AI brings much convenience, relying on it for homework isn’t appropriate. Therefore, I advise you to complete your homework independently. Moreover, if you encounter difficulties, you are supposed to seek help from teachers or classmates. Do bear in mind that the process of overcoming challenges is where real learning happens.
I hope my suggestions will be of some help to you. I am looking forward to hearing your progress soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

M: People can spend the night there sleeping with sea life, like sea turtles, dolphins, corals and so on. According to the Grand Underwater World, sharks are the most popular among children.
W: That sounds fantastic. I’d like to book a night tour.
M: I was going to reserve a tour for this Saturday. But this week has been fully booked. Since you’re interested, how about making a reservation together for next Saturday, that is, October 19th?
W: That day is perfect for me. Well, do you know any other details of the night tour?
M: Yes. People should arrive there no earlier than 6:30 p. m. There’s a speech about sea life. It ends at 8:00 p. m. Then, there’s a big screen movie. People can sleep with sea life after finishing watching the movie around 10:00 p. m. By the way, they offer midnight snacks and breakfast for the following day.
W: Great! I’ll dig out my sleeping bag tonight.
M: I was going to buy one online last night, but I chose to buy an air bed finally. It’s more comfortable.
W: Good choice. I’m really looking forward to the tour.
