Most people see plastic bottles as rubbish, but 14-year-old Li Zihan from Shenzhen sees them as a chance to help the environment. Every week, she spends her weekends collecting used plastic bottles from her neighborhood. But she doesn’t just recycle them — she turns them into useful things.
Two years ago, Li learned that millions of plastic bottles end up in the ocean every year, harming sea animals. She decided to do something. Every time the Chinese New Year holiday comes to an end, many people across China pack their bags and start going on a journey full of fresh hopes. In 2026, I chose to drive back to Beijing after the holiday, which gave me the chance to join the annual (一年一度的) “trunk-filling competition” that took place at the end of the Spring Festival.
The night before I left, my parents were busy planning how to maximize the space in my car’s trunk (后备箱). They carefully chose and packed things they thought I would need or enjoy back in the city. From homemade dishes like meatballs prepared during the holiday to fresh vegetables and fruit from local farms, they filled every part of the trunk. They even included condiments (调味品) which they thought would be hard to find in Beijing.
On my return trip, almost every expressway (高速公路) service area was crowded with cars. As drivers opened their trunks, the colorful packages inside caught my eye. One driver, Xiaohao, who was returning to Tianjin, said his car was filled with all kinds of fresh vegetables grown by his family. “It’s not that I can’t buy them in the city. It’s that this shows my family’s love,” he explained.
Later, while surfing the Internet, I found that many people were also joining the “trunk-filling competition” and sharing photos of their trunks. These trunks were mostly filled with local specialties (特产), farm products and homemade foods. Someone online said, “No matter how large the trunk is, my parents can fill it up.”
Driving back with a trunk full of homemade foods, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude (感激). The items packed so carefully by my parents were not just things — they were pieces of home, signs of love, and sources of comfort for the year ahead.
8. Which of the following is TRUE about the writer?
A. Beijing is not his hometown. B. He was ready to join the competition.
C. He hopes more people can go to Beijing. D. He enjoyed road trips during holidays.
9. What does the underlined word “maximize” mean in Para. 2?
A. Empty out. B. Protect well. C. Make the most of. D. Check carefully.
10. What did the writer feel when driving back with a full trunk?
A. Excited to give the gifts to friends. B. Worried about the heavily loaded (满载的) car.
C. Unhappy with too much food in the car. D. Thankful for the love and comfort from home.
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Trip Back to Beijing B. More than a Full Trunk
C. My Happy Spring Festival D. Delicious Homemade Food
A 9. C 10. D 11. B

文章第一段提到“I chose to drive back to Beijing after the holiday”以及第二段提到“my parents…carefully chose and packed things they thought I would need or enjoy back in the city…”,作者是在家乡陪父母过完春节假期后,开车返回北京的,这说明北京并不是他的家乡。
文章第二段提到“They carefully chose and packed things…they filled every part of the trunk.”,父母在作者出发前一晚精心挑选和打包物品,最终“填满了后备箱的每一个角落”。 对比选项,C项“Make the most of.”
文章最后一段提到“Driving back with a trunk full of homemade foods, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude…they were pieces of home, signs of love, and sources of comfort…”,作者看着被塞满的后备箱,内心感到了深深的感激,因为这些家乡的食物承载着家人无私的爱与安慰。

Have you ever heard of a food deliveryman becoming a famous poet? In China, Wang Jibing has surprised many people. Over the past few years, this man has tried different jobs—he was once a truck driver, a scrap collector, and even worked in a bookstore. But today, he is known across China as a food deliveryman who became a prize-winning poet.
Wang had a very difficult life before his success. After dropping out of middle school early, he had to work hard day and night to support his family. Although life was hard, writing always brought peace to his heart. In his free time, he wrote tirelessly and dreamed of publishing his books.
However, his family did not understand him. One day, to feel the deep sadness of losing a family member for his story, Wang walked around the village in mourning clothes (孝服). This made his father extremely angry. That winter, his father burned all his handwritten notebooks, including a 200,000-word novel. Even so, Wang never gave up. During his short breaks, he kept writing poems on small pieces of waste paper.
Later, Wang worked as a food deliveryman for eight years, riding his bicycle through the streets day and night. Instead of complaining about his tiring job, he found great ideas in his daily life. To write his book of poems, Flying Low, he talked to more than 140 food delivery workers. Through his words, he recorded their real lives to show how strong these ordinary (普通的) workers are. For example, he wrote about a deliveryman with only one arm, who still ran very fast to deliver food.
On August 28, 2026, Wang finally saw the fruit of his efforts. He stood on a big stage and won the Lu Xun Literature Prize. Although life was full of troubles, Wang chose to face it with hope and love. When people asked about his poems, he said with a smile, “Not all wings can fly high, but flying low is still flying.”
12. What is Wang Jibing’s job now?
A. A full-time writer. B. A scrap collector.
C. A truck driver. D. A deliveryman and poet.
13. Which difficulty did Wang meet according to Para. 2-3?
A. His father died when he was young. B. His novel was once lost.
C. The school life was too tiring. D. He didn’t get support from his family.
14. Why did Wang mention the story of the one-armed deliveryman?
A. To show how strong the workers could be.
B. To show how dangerous the food delivering is.
C. To explain why Wang stopped riding a bicycle.
D. To explain why Wang complained about the job.
15. What does the sentence “Not all wings can fly high, but flying low is still flying” tell us?
A. Birds can fly in different ways.
B. Deliverymen should be respected by us.
C. Ordinary people can live a meaningful life.
D. Everyone can try different jobs to live better.

be worth the price意思是“物有所值,值这个价格”。
manage to do sth.

a gift for sb是固定用法,表示“给某人的礼物”,介词for表对象。

Most people see plastic bottles as rubbish, but 14-year-old Li Zihan from Shenzhen sees them as a chance to help the environment. Every week, she spends her weekends collecting used plastic bottles from her neighborhood. But she doesn’t just recycle them — she turns them into useful things.
Two years ago, Li learned that millions of plastic bottles end up in the ocean every year, harming sea animals. She decided to do something. After watching online videos, she taught herself how to cut, melt, and reshape (重塑) plastic bottles into flower pots, pencil cases, and even small chairs. So far, she has made over 200 items from more than 3,000 bottles.
Her story spread quickly after a local TV station reported on her work. Last month, she was invited to speak at a school environmental forum (论坛). “One person’s action may seem small, but if everyone does a little, we can make a big difference,” she said.
Li also started a “Plastic Challenge” activity in her school. Students bring used bottles, and she shows them how to turn the bottles into creative gifts. Her teacher, Mr. Chen, said, “Li Zihan is not just a student — she is a real environmental warrior.”
Now, Li hopes to invent a simple machine that can turn plastic bottles into building bricks (砖头). “The world’s waste problem won’t be solved in one day,” she said. “But I believe young people can lead the change.”
