For Qi, dyeing with the help of natural herbs remains the most fascinating. The method requires great 41 , as the dyes (颜料) must be boiled at a certain temperature within a proper time period. “Even a one-minute difference can create the 42 result of all,” Qi explained. [A businessman called Antonio borrowed three thousand dollars from Shylock, a cruel moneylender, to support his close friend Bassanio, who intended to win Portia’s heart. They signed a strict contract. If the debt was not paid off by the deadline, Shylock would get the right to cut off exactly one pound of Antonio’s flesh. Yet the written paper said nothing about blood-related results or legal punishment.]
Scene 1
Bassanio: (shouting anxiously) I have collected much more money than the total debt. I’m ready to pay the full amount and even extra. Set Antonio free!
Shylock: That isn’t possible. ▲ Nobody has the right to break the official contract out of pity. I will accept no settlement except the pound of flesh required in the paper. Judge, please carry out the rule of the contract.
Lawyer: (to Shylock) You should show mercy to this man, or he will lose his life.
Shylock: Why should I offer mercy? I just require the fairness promised by the law!
Lawyer: Are you fully aware that you still stick to this terrible contract and refuse any other deal?
Shylock: I am. Nothing can change my mind.
Lawyer: Excellent. According to the contract, Shylock has the legal right to take a pound of Antonio’s flesh. (Antonio buries his face in hopelessness. Shylock sharpens his knife and holds it high over Antonio’s chest.) Stop! (to Shylock) Your contract only allows flesh to be taken, but it never mentions blood. If even one drop of blood runs out, you will be punished for attempting to take a citizen’s life.
Shylock: (His knife slips onto the floor in great shock.) What? … Very well. I will take the money instead of the flesh.
Lawyer: Remember you have signed your name on it. You must take exactly one pound of flesh, neither more nor less. If you cannot satisfy this strict condition, you will get nothing from this case.
Shylock: I give up! I withdraw my case! (Shylock gives up his demand and leaves the courtroom filled with anger. People present cheer because Antonio narrowly escaped death.)
Bassanio: (to the lawyer) Dear sir, what reward can I give you for your kindness?
Lawyer: Oh, really? What reward would you prepare for me? (The lawyer leaves the court and takes off his lawyer’s clothes.)
Scene 2
Bassanio: Portia! Antonio is saved!
Portia: (smiling, copying the lawyer’s tone) The contract only allows flesh, not blood.
Bassanio: (astonished) How do you know those words?
Portia: (showing the lawyer’s clothes) I was that lawyer. (All laugh.)
48. Why did Antonio sign that risky contract with Shylock?
A. He hoped to make business profits to help Bassanio court Portia.
B. He wanted to show his bravery in public to win Portia’s admiration.
C. He planned to give financial support for Bassanio to win Portia over.
D. He expected Portia’s cleverness to defeat Shylock once trouble appeared.
49. Which of the following can be put in the ▲ ?
A. A lie is still a lie. B. A promise is a promise.

B. Antonio didn’t die, but he got a little hurt when Shylock got his knife ready to cut.
C. Shylock would surely be put into prison after he gave up his demand in the court.
D. Shylock could receive nothing from the case unless he carried out the contract strictly.

①While the size of Arctic sea ice has dropped by about 40 percent over 40 years, until recently, the size of the sea ice around Antarctica was slowly increasing. Then, after 2015, its extent (范围) fell from a record high to several record lows, losing an area as large as Greenland.
②Some research has suggested that higher air temperatures may be the cause. However, two new studies show that ocean warming played a bigger role in this dramatic change. As part of global ocean circulation (全球海洋环流), warm saltwater moves southward from the tropics and circles Antarctica 200 metres below the surface. But temperature and saltiness records of the past 20 years suggest that this warm deep saltwater has been rising towards the surface, where it can melt sea ice.
③Antarctica is encircled by a belt of strong winds and storms. Climate change has pushed this storm belt southward, bringing more rain and snow into the sea ice area, according to a study by Earle Wilson and other researchers at Stanford University. The rain and snow create a layer (层) of fresh surface water that better protects the bottom of the sea ice from warm deep saltwater, allowing it to grow to its 2014 record high. But the same southward-moving storm belt also brings stronger winds. These winds blow surface water and ice forward. As this happens, warm deep saltwater rises up to fill the empty space.
④Between 2014 and 2016, this wind-driven rising began to get the upper hand against the protective layer of increased rain and snow, and sea ice began to melt away. When the researchers input the recorded ocean data into a computer model, it predicted that sea ice would grow and then become smaller, as it did in the real world.
⑤The researchers plan to study and model other things, which also likely play roles throughout Antarctica. Examples include changes in sea ice movement and increases in ocean mixing resulting from more storms. Later observations show Antarctic sea ice reached its historic minimum in 2023. It saw a gradual recovery from 2024 to 2026, yet it remains below the average level. By studying the ocean data, they hope to build a model to project changes in Antarctic sea ice in the years to come.
52. Which of the following best shows the Antarctic sea ice changes around 2015?
A. B.
C. D.
53. In which order are the following events discussed in Paragraph 3?
①Warm deep saltwater rises to the surface. ②A layer of fresh surface water is created.

54. The word “melt” has several Chinese meanings. Which sentence uses the word with the same meaning as the underlined word in the passage?
【词义框】melt ①(使)融化;熔化 ②心软,感动 ③(使)慢慢消失 ④热坏了
A. My heart melts when I watch those warm-hearted movies.
B. The strong sunlight melted the thick wax on the table.
C. At the first sign of trouble, the crowd melted away.
D. Today the temperature got up to 36 degrees and it felt like I was melting.
55. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Why is Antarctic sea ice experiencing unusual changes?
B. How does fresh surface water protect Antarctic sea ice?
C. Can computer models stop Antarctic sea ice from disappearing?
D. What leads to ice loss in both the Arctic and Antarctica?
D
Every building we stay in is designed with mathematical rules, without which architects (建筑师) can hardly turn creative ideas into practical structures that people can safely live in. Before construction starts, architects draw detailed plans with geometry (几何学), algebra (代数) and trigonometry (三角学).
Since ancient times, geometry, whose influence can be seen across many great landmarks, has helped architects create various building shapes. Around 300 B. C., Euclid recorded the Golden Ratio (黄金比例), a mathematical rule that produces beautiful and balanced building ratio. For more than 2,000 years, designers have depended on this rule. Though it cannot promise perfect-looking buildings in every case, it brings visual harmony to structures and remains widely used in modern architecture.
Besides the Golden Ratio, the Pythagorean theorem (勾股定理) plays an important part in building work, especially when workers deal with gable roofs (人字屋顶). The theorem states that in a right-angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse (斜边) equals the sum of squares of the other two sides. Carpenters (木匠) often depend on this rule when measuring roofs.
The span refers to the width of a building, which is measured from one outside wall to the opposite outside wall. Since buildings often use multi-layered wood materials, building plans include clear notes that tell workers where each measurement should begin and end.
The run is one-half the span, whose measuring units are typically based on 12 inches. Carpenters seldom describe roofs with simple degree numbers such as 30° or 60°. Instead, they are used to talking about the roof pitch, the ratio between vertical (垂直的) and horizontal (水平方向的) measurements. If a plan marks a 6/12 pitch roof, it means the roof rises six inches vertically for every 12 inches of horizontal run. Even though pitch is their favourite term in practical calculations (计算), carpenters still need to master knowledge connected with rise-and-run.
Ancient builders made good use of such mathematical knowledge. The Egyptian pyramids are well-known examples. Most pyramids were built at about a 51-degree angle. Such amazing building accuracy (精确度) shows ancient Egyptians held a deep understanding of geometry, even though they had never read any of Euclid’s works.
Math remains necessary for modern construction workers, who need to work out size, weight and material needs for houses, offices and public buildings. Even small-sized houses require careful mathematical calculations. Next time you step into a building, you may stop to think about the complex math that is hidden behind its plain walls.
56. What can we learn about carpenters from the text?
A. They mainly work on measuring and repairing old buildings.
B. They prefer using “pitch” rather than degree angles when describing roofs.
C. They are supposed to master the Golden Ratio before taking this job.
D. They find “pitch” so useful in practical calculations that they hardly use the Pythagorean theorem for roof measurement.
57. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Euclid discovered the Golden Ratio nearly 2000 years ago.
B. The “run” of a building equals twice the length of its span.
C. Ancient Egyptian builders had a good knowledge of geometry.
D. Modern construction workers hardly do math-related work.
58. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The long history and interesting stories behind world-famous ancient buildings.
B. Different ways to apply the Pythagorean theorem to ancient roof building.
C. Several mathematical principles applied in building design and construction.
D. How the Golden Ratio improves scientific research in different fields.
59. How is the passage organized?
A. B. C. D.

Getting knowledge while watching videos on the Internet
While learning natural history from books, why not take advantage of the power of the Internet? Here are some bloggers that you can follow. They will show you nature in their eyes.
Uncle Cool’s Animal World is run by Huang Xin, who graduated from Peking University with a master’s degree in fine arts. He grew up near Hengshan Mountain in Hunan province. There he could meet different kinds of animals. Out of his love for them, he decided to introduce animals to Internet users in interesting ways on his account (账号). In his videos, rarely seen (罕见的) animals like potoos (林鸱) are compared to Lin Daiyu in Dream of the Red Chamber (《红楼梦》). Commonly seen animals like sparrows (麻雀) are just like normal people, who take a shower every day, have no big dreams but live happily. “Living a busy life, we often see animals as normal. I hope my video helps connect people with the wonderful nature and makes people love animals,” said Huang.
Lu Jing and Hui Dong are two plant lovers. They run an account called Nature in Our Eyes on Douyin and Bilibili. With no exaggerated (夸张的) styles, they tell plant stories in a simple way. What attracts the audience is their introduction to the culture and folk stories behind plants. Their journey has been full of challenges. Sometimes finding a certain plant takes hours of going through the mountains. They hope to help the audience get to know the plants around us through their stories.
Fact of Wild Insects is a studio and an account on Douyin and Rednote made by Liu Pengyu and his insect-loving friends in 2018. They spend months finding certain species of insects every year, watching and researching rare insects’ lives in the mountains. Over the past five years, the team has found over 10 new species. In their free time, they hold activities to introduce insects to students and share videos on social media. “People step on many insects in their daily life without realizing some of them are as special as the giant panda,” Liu told Xinhua. The team hopes more people will join them to protect animals.
Have you ever met anything, whether it’s an animal or a plant, that you have no idea what it is? Ask Natural History on Sina Weibo. The account is run by Chinese National Geography magazine. From “Can I eat it?” to “Why does it smell?”, it receives all kinds of questions from curious people online and answers them from time to time. 68 .

Hope is a positive feeling that includes action and belief in achieving goals. It shapes people’s attitudes towards life difficulties. Hope encourages people to meet challenges and focus on possibilities rather than difficulties. “Being hopeful makes me look on the bright side,” says John, aged eight. Snyder, an expert on hopeful thinking, describes hope as having three parts: setting a goal, finding ways to achieve it, and believing in yourself even when things go wrong.
Snyder calls hope a “rainbow of the mind” because it makes people think of what is possible. Hope is not just a feeling, but also a mindset that helps you move forward in life. Being hopeful, like trying a new sport or hobby, requires courage. It helps you discover what’s important while making you more confident. For example, learning to play the piano may seem difficult at first, but staying hopeful can help you overcome obstacles (障碍) and improve step by step. Studies show hope helps you learn better at school, build stronger friendships and feel less stressed.
Hope is a skill that anyone can develop. Expert David Feldman suggests starting with a meaningful goal and creating practical steps to achieve it. For example, if you dream of becoming a professional cook, you can learn one new dish each week, practice regularly, and get feedback (反馈意见) from others. Achieving goals requires energy, so it’s important to eat healthily, sleep well, and take care of yourself. Also, you can turn to role models or successful people who can encourage you. If you feel hopeless, share your thoughts with friends or family to get support. Finally, make use of your imagination and picture yourself achieving your goal.
Hope means believing in a bright future and acting to make it come true. It gives people courage to face challenges and 74. ______________. Snyder explains hope includes three key parts. Studies show hope not only improves school learning and friendships, but also brings 75. ______________. Hope can be developed. Feldman advises people to set goals as well as 76. ______________. In short, hope can help people make progress and succeed because 77. ______________.
