Anna, a retired teacher, was walking her dogs when she found yellow marks stuck on some of the 99 oak trees in a lane close to her home. The marks indicated trees were bound to be felled(砍伐).
Anna loved that ancient line of oaks. She felt upset when remembering the moment she realized the oaks would be cut down. "My family and I would picnic under them, climb them, have rope swings on them. The trees are beautiful and mean so much." she says. The trees were to be cut down as part of the new high-speed railway works. She called the railway helpline and was told there was nothing that could be done.
Anna had spent her career as a teacher telling children that "If something is wrong, you can't stand by and let it happen. You have to speak up for people who can't speak for themselves." She thought, "Who is speaking for the trees?" So she began to save the trees with her daughter's help. She started a petition(请愿书) which collected nearly 43,000 signatures. She also started a campaign, urging local people to sound their horns when driving down the road if they wanted the oaks to stay. "You could hear people honking all the way down the lane," she says. "It was amazing."
Anna made contact with a nonprofit. "We discovered seven species of bats were using the trees as a commuting corridor," she says. So the felling stopped. "There are 87 trees still standing because of the campaign," says Anna proudly. "But 20 to 30 trees still remain under threat. We want a green crossing in the gaps between trees for the bats, and we'd like the place to become a conservation area."
For Anna, campaigning for the trees has been life-changing. "If you'd said that I'd be where I am now 16 months ago, I wouldn't have believed you. I'm called 'Bat Woman' by my campaign colleagues now. For the trees and the bats—this is what I am and will be fighting for!" she says.
24.Why was Anna depressed when knowing the trees would be cut down? ( )

For the first time, some international scientists have proven that cockatoos(凤头鹦鹉), an important Australian bird species, learn from each other a special skill—lifting rubbish bin lids to gather food.
Lead researcher, Barbara Klump, said social learning is the basis of different regional(区域的) cultures, and some birds appear to learn socially. "Children are masters of social learning. From an early age, they copy skills from other children and adults. However, compared with humans, there are few known examples of animals learning from each other," Klump said. "It's quite difficult to show that behavior is not due to genetics(遗传学)," she added.
However, a few years ago, Richard Major shared a video showing a cockatoo opening a closed rubbish bin skillfully. Klump was attracted by the video. "It was so exciting to observe this cockatoo's peculiar way to access a food resource. We knew immediately that we had to systematically study this unique(独特的) behavior," Klump said.
In 2018, they launched an online survey in various areas across Sydney and Australia with questions such as, "What area are you from, have you seen this behavior before, and if so, when?" The survey ran for two years and helped them determine how the behavior spread to other cockatoos in Sydney. By the end of 2019, residents from 44 areas had observed the bin-opening behavior, showing that it had spread widely. And the behavior reached neighboring districts more quickly than districts further away, indicating that the animals really learned the behavior from other nearby cockatoos.
There was one exception, however. In late 2018, a cockatoo in Northern Sydney reinvented the technique itself. Birds in neighboring districts then copied the behavior. "We observed that the birds did not open the rubbish bins in the same way, but rather used different opening techniques in different suburbs, suggesting that the behavior was learned by observing others," Klump said.
The scientists think that the results are due to the appearance of regional subcultures. They hope that their findings will cause a broader understanding of urban animals.
28.What is a big challenge for researchers?
A. Videoing a cockatoo opening a closed rubbish bin.
B. Finding examples of birds learning from humans.
C. Proving animals' social learning is a learned skill.
D. Comparing animals with children in genetics.
29.What does the underlined word "peculiar" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Familiar. B. Unusual. C. Ordinary. D. Confusing.
30.How did the researchers carry out the study?
A. By analyzing existing data.
B. By observing cockatoos outdoors.
C. By studying the brain cells of cockatoos.
D. By questioning people about cockatoos' behavior.
31.What's the feature of cockatoos' bin-opening behavior?
A. It spreads quickly and regionally.
B. It never changes once learned.
C. It appeared earlier than other parrots'.
D. It causes trouble for nearby residents.

Every year, millions of birds fly between Mexico's Sierra Madre Oriental mountains and the Gulf of Mexico from August to November to escape cold temperatures, giving rise to an event known as the “River of Raptors”, which brings hundreds of foreign birdwatchers to the coastal area of Veracruz.
“Many of my customers have been to other famous bird migration sites but say they have never seen anything as grand as the ‘River of Raptorsˈ in Veracruz,” said Steven Koevoet, a birdwatching guide who has shown visitors places in Yucatan and Veracruz for over 25 years.
Yet the yearly event has not led to a large increase in ecotourism. Critics suggest the lack of increased ecotourism is mainly caused by Mexico's failure to encourage tourism away from its beach resorts. Environmentalists believe high levels of violence and environmentally unfriendly practices are also problems for developing ecotourism in the states of Chiapas and Veracruz. Violence has stopped birdwatching for years in some places, where the activity was an important source of income for local communities.
But, environmental groups, universities and farmers in Veracruz are trying to change this. Angel Viveros, a rancher (大农场主), uses land owned by his family for activities including birdwatching, horse riding, skydiving and hiking. Supported by the non-profit group Pronatura Veracruz, which studies and counts the birds in the yearly migration, he is now receiving hundreds of visitors yearly. Local coffee producers organize coffee tastings and educational talks about the importance of birds in spreading seeds. A green, bird-friendly stamp for those producers could be the next step. One retiree who has been visiting Veracruz since 2002 had this to say, “Apart from feeling the physical relaxation, it is like something spiritual ...there are no words to describe what it feels like to see the river of birds.”
32.What is the “River of Raptors” known for?
A. The rich diversity of birds. B. The size of birds' migrating.
C. The number of birdwatchers. D. The long distance of migration.
33.Why is Steven Koevoet mentioned?
A. To stress the popularity of the event.
B. To explain his intention to be a guide.
C. To show his devotion to local tourism.
D. To prove the impressiveness of the event.
34.What prevents the development of ecotourism in Mexico according to critics?
A. The lack of government support.
B. High levels and frequency of violence.
C. Disagreement among local communities.
D. The adoption of not eco-friendly methods.
35.What can be inferred about ecotourism from the last paragraph?
A. People hold different attitudes to it.
B. Joint efforts are made to develop it.
C. It has an uncertain future in Veracruz.
D. It is a major source of income for the locals.

Survival in the Wild
Plants and animals have the hard job of surviving in a very wild world. How do they do it? (36) Camouflage(保护色)is one way animals use to survive. For some animals, this means that their fur(毛)or skin has a similar colour to the land around them. Deer, for example, have brown fur that matches the trees, so itˈs harder for hunters to see them. This saves them from becoming food of some larger animals.

Some insects, instead of matching their environment, look like something else, which will stop animals from eating them. A stick insect looks just like a stick so that hunters will pass it by without noticing it. Some butterflies have patterns on their wings that make them look like snakes, to frighten away hunters.
(39) They want to be easily noticed to survive! Many plants grow colourful flowers to attract bees so that they can produce seeds.
Instead of hiding, some plants and animals develop special parts to hurt anything that tries to hurt them. (40) Some plants develop thorns(刺)so that animals will not eat them.
A.In this way the rabbits are safer from hunters year-round.
B.But some plants survive in a quite different way.
C.As a result, the rabbits have different colours in different seasons.
D.Some animals have very sharp teeth so they can fight off other animals.
E.There are many ways plants and animals have used in order to survive.

"Sun, sun, sun, here it comes..."
Danny sang while his fingers pressed and pulled skillfully at the guitar strings, delivering a slow and peaceful tune. A circle of audience had formed, nodding and moving slowly to the song.
Lying at the feet of the street performer was his most adoring fan: One-Eyed, a white stray(流浪) dog with pieces of brown. Danny felt the name was suitable considering its physical disability. Usually, One-Eyed would bark loudly as Danny performed. Much to his annoyance, people often mistook the pair as owner and pet. At this time, Danny would reply, "My dog? No!", eyes rolling at the idea. How he wished the dog would leave him alone instead!
On a snowy night, while Danny was performing, a bird flew downward, landing into the midst of the crowd. It cooed happily as if to harmonize with Danny. Unfortunately, that did not sit well with One-Eyed, which immediately bounced at it and the bird flew away desperately.
The unexpected chaos upturned Danny's hat, which could have been filled with notes and coins from his appreciative audience, leaving it ignored on the ground. "Argh! The hateful dog!" Danny broke down, thinking to himself, "Either the dog goes or I go!"
On the next night, Danny tried to find a new place and chanced upon the park. For a while his earnings were good unsurprisingly as there was a steady flow of visitors. However, that didn't last long. One-Eyed came along and appointed itself as Danny's guardian. "Argh! Here comes the hateful dog again!" That night, Danny hadn't made enough money he should have, all thanks to the troublesome dog.
Danny was almost mad with One-Eyed. "What should I do? Call an animal shelter?" Torn by this problem, he walked aimlessly by the lake of the park. With all his mind focused on how to get rid of the dog, Danny didn't watch his steps. Suddenly, he slipped and fell into the lake accidentally. Struggling in the icy water, he cried for help desperately, almost choking to death. Sensing the approach of death, Danny got into overwhelming panic.

第二节 读后续写 (满分 25 分) 。
67. Just then, a familiar barking was heard in the distance. In a split second, a splash of brown, out of breath, quickly jumped into the lake. It was One-Eyed! It barked, swimming toward Danny with all its might. On spotting One-Eyed, Danny seemed to see a ray of hope, attempting to move towards it instantly. Instinctively. Danny grabbed the tail of One-Eyed. Ultimately, they managed to climb ashore, exhausted. Gazing at One-Eyed in disbelief, Danny patted it tenderly in return. One-Eyed was no longer troublesome; instead, it became a "hero" in his heart.
"My hero! Thank you for saving me," Danny said gratefully with watery eyes. "You're my brave guardian angel?" Since that night, "One-Eyed" was nonexistent while "Hero", as the dog was re-named, became a part of Danny's performance. So attached were they to each other that they became genuine partners. Danny would include his pet as he engaged the audience. Hero also had its own place to lie on the feet of Danny. While Danny played guitar, Hero would bark happily to harmonize with his owner. What a perfect match!

【范文】
