(本题10分)Located in the rolling hills and endless stretches of farmland just beyond the village of Millbrook lies a peaceful habitat for more than 80 species of wildlife from around the world. Truly one of a kind, the Trevor Zoo at Millbrook School is the only zoo in the nation accredited (认证) by Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and run by a high school. This is where Alan Tousignant began his career in zoology and conservation (保护).
Tousignant was ready to study biology and apply to a program for veterinarians (兽医), but he didn’t live up to the requirement of mathematics and had to give up that dream. During a fieldwork experience, however, he learned about an opening for an internship (实习) at the Millbrook School’s Trevor Zoo. His work at the zoo has caused him to develop a lifelong interest and career in exhibiting non-native animals and working with others in the field of conservation.
The Trevor Zoo, established in 1936, is small compared to many well-known zoos. As a consequence, Tousignant says, “We all wear a lot of hats.” But the wide range of tasks on the job is exactly what’s kept him around for all these years. The role of organizer — helping to shape the big-picture purposes and goals for the zoo — comes easily to Tousignant, but he says he appreciates the hands-on time he spends working with the animals and designing exhibits.
Working with students and observing the impact of the zoo program on their early learning experiences has been inspiring to Tousignant, who says the value of an on-campus zoo creates many opportunities to catch students’ imaginations and stimulate their curiosity about science and conservation.
One living, breathing example is Millbrook alumnus (校友), Thomas Lovejoy, PhD, today a senior expert and a professor of environmental science and policy at George Mason University in Virginia. Lovejoy’s experience working at the Trevor Zoo during high school inspired a lifelong career devoted to conservation.
What is special about the Trevor Zoo among AZA-accredited zoos?
A.It has multiple wildlife species.
B.It belongs to a private organization.
C.It lies in the center of Millbrook.
D.It is operated by a high school.
What led to Tousignant’s career interest?
A.Animal research. B.Zoo internship. C.Math requirement. D.Biology study.
What does the underlined phrase “wear a lot of hats” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Take on various roles. B.Make the most of strengths.
C.Work with many partners. D.Have a large collection of hats.
Why is Thomas Lovejoy mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.To attract more students to visit zoos.
B.To prove the popularity of conservation.
C.To introduce a famous university professor.
D.To show the Trevor Zoo’s influence on students.
【答案】24.D 25.B 26.A 27.D

根据第一段中的“Truly one of a kind, the Trevor Zoo at Millbrook School is the only zoo in the nation accredited (认证) by Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and run by a high school.(米尔布鲁克学校的特雷弗动物园独一无二,它是全国唯一获得动物园与水族馆协会认证、由一所高中运营的动物园。)”
根据第二段中的“During a fieldwork experience, however, he learned about an opening for an internship (实习) at the Millbrook School’s Trevor Zoo. His work at the zoo has caused him to develop a lifelong interest and career in exhibiting non-native animals and working with others in the field of conservation.(然而在一次实地调研过程中,他得知米尔布鲁克学校特雷弗动物园有一个实习岗位空缺。在动物园的工作经历,让他终身热爱并投身于外来动物饲养展示,同时与同行一起从事动物保护相关工作。)”可知,动物园实习经历催生了图西尼昂的职业兴趣。
26.词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“The Trevor Zoo, established in 1936, is small compared to many well-known zoos. As a consequence, Tousignant says, “We all wear a lot of hats.” But the wide range of tasks on the job is exactly what’s kept him around for all these years.(特雷弗动物园建于1936年,相比许多知名动物园,它规模很小。因此图西尼昂说:“我们每个人都wear a lot of hats。”但工作中多种多样的任务正是让他多年留在这里的原因。)”可知,动物园规模小,工作人员需要承担各类不同工作,因此,短语“wear a lot of hats”表示承担多种工作角色。
27.推理判断题。根据第五段中的“Lovejoy’s experience working at the Trevor Zoo during high school inspired a lifelong career devoted to conservation.(洛夫乔伊高中时期在特雷弗动物园的工作经历,促使他终身投身于动物保护事业。)”
(本题10分)Why does “bouba” sound round and “kiki” sound spiky (尖锐的)? This perception, known as “bouba-kiki” effect, is reliable all over the world, and for at least a century, scientists have considered it a clue to the origin of language, theorizing that maybe our ancestors built their first words upon these associations between sound and shape. But a new study published in Science adds an unexpected finding: baby chickens make these same pairings, suggesting that the link to human language may not be so unique.
The study was led by Maria Loconsole, a comparative psychologist at the University of Padua. She and her colleagues placed chicks in front of two panels: one featured a flowerlike shape with gently rounded curves; the other had a spiky shape like a cartoon explosion. They then played recordings of humans saying either “bouba” or “kiki” and observed the birds’ behavior. When the chicks heard “bouba,” 80 percent of them approached the round shape first and spent an average of more than three minutes exploring it compared with an average of just under one minute spent exploring the spiky shape. When the chicks heard “kiki,” the opposite occurred.
One long-standing theory that these associations are inspired by the shape your mouth makes when you say each word can now be ruled out, since the chicks showed the effect despite being unable to speak. Instead the “bouba-kiki” effect may originate from the physical properties of objects themselves. When round objects hit the ground or roll, they typically produce more continuous, low-frequency sounds than spiky ones. A built-in grasp of those dynamics, linking sight and sound, could help newborn animals quickly make sense of their environment, possibly to locate food or avoid predators
The “bouba-kiki” effect may have played a role in the emergence of language. But for chickens, this same tendency seems to serve a more evolutionary purpose. “Even if language is unique to humans,” Loconsole says, “that doesn’t mean that it comes from an ability that is unique to humans.”
What does the new study focus on?
A.The origin of human language. B.Sound-shape connections in chicks.
C.Animals’ recognition of shapes. D.Brain-behavior relationships of birds.
In what way do the chicks respond differently to the two sounds?
A.Sound localization. B.Reaction speed.
C.Exploration preference. D.Matching accuracy.
What is paragraph 3 mainly about concerning the effect?
A.Its historical context. B.Its potential application.
C.Its overlooked limitation. D.Its possible explanation.
What does Loconsole say about the effect?
A.It originated in birds. B.It shows evolutionary tendency.
C.It’s shared across species. D.It’s vital to language emergence.
根据第一段“But a new study published in Science adds an unexpected finding: baby chickens make these same pairings, suggesting that the link to human language may not be so unique.(但发表在《科学》杂志上的一项新研究有了意外发现:雏鸡也会做出同样的配对,这表明这种与人类语言的关联可能并非人类独有。)”
根据第二段“When the chicks heard ‘bouba,’ 80 percent of them approached the round shape first and spent an average of more than three minutes exploring it compared with an average of just under one minute spent exploring the spiky shape. When the chicks heard ‘kiki,’ the opposite occurred.(当雏鸡听到‘bouba’时,80%会先靠近圆润形状,平均花三分多钟探索它,而探索尖锐形状的时间平均不到一分钟。听到‘kiki’时则相反。)”可知,雏鸡对两种声音的不同反应体现在探索偏好上。故选C。
30.主旨大意题。根据第三段“One long-standing theory that these associations are inspired by the shape your mouth makes when you say each word can now be ruled out, since the chicks showed the effect despite being unable to speak. Instead the “bouba-kiki” effect may originate from the physical properties of objects themselves.(一种长期存在的理论认为,这些关联是由你说每个单词时嘴巴的形状引起的,现在可以排除这种说法,因为小鸡尽管不会说话,但还是表现出了这种效果。相反,“bouba-kiki”效应可能源于物体本身的物理特性。)”可知,本段主要是对该效应产生的原因给出可能的解释。故选D。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段““Even if language is unique to humans,” Loconsole says, “that doesn’t mean that it comes from an ability that is unique to humans.”(洛康索莱说:“即使语言是人类独有的,这也并不意味着它源自一种人类独有的能力。”)”
(本题10分)Greenland sharks, the mysterious giants lying low in the deep, cold waters of the Arctic and North Atlantic, are known for their extraordinarily long life — some can live for over 400 years. Scientists have long wondered how these creatures manage to outlive all other vertebrates Through a series of studies, they desire to reveal the secrets behind their long life.
Lily Fogg, a biologist at the University of Basel in Switzerland, and her team focused on the sharks’ eyes. Examining tissue from ten Greenland sharks, including some up to 150 years old, they found that these animals possess all the necessary cellular structures for vision in the deep sea’s dim light. Surprisingly, the eye tissue showed little sign of aging. Fogg suggests this may be due to highly active DNA repair mechanisms that prevent cell death and tissue degeneration. A separate study of the sharks’ sets of genes also pointed to enhanced DNA repair functions.
However, not all organs benefit from such protection. Alessandro Cellerino, an Italian physiologist, led a study on the sharks’ hearts. Examining six Greenland sharks, his team discovered that their hearts accumulate tough scars and cellular damage over time. In humans, similar scarring would indicate cardiovascular disease, hardening the heart and reducing its pumping efficiency. Yet, despite this damage, the sharks’ hearts continue to function effectively. Researchers suspect that protective hormones may help their hearts stand up to some age-related injuries.
Catherine Macdonald, an ecologist at the University of Miami, finds these findings fascinating. She notes that any animal with such a long lifetime must possess both repair and maintenance abilities. While studying living Greenland sharks is difficult owing to their deep-sea habitat — they can dive to 2,200 meters, Macdonald believes that understanding their long life can offer valuable insights into human aging. However, she cautions against drawing quick conclusions on human health, emphasizing that these discoveries are just the beginning of a much longer scientific journey.
What is the scientists’ attitude to Greenland sharks’ long life?
A.Shocked. B.Curious. C.Doubtful. D.Indifferent.
What can be inferred about Greenland sharks’ hearts?
A.They stop functioning at an old age. B.They age faster than their eyes.
C.They are free of age-related injuries. D.They can repair damage thoroughly.
What does Macdonald think of the findings?
A.They are difficult to understand. B.They lack corresponding evidence.
C.They offer conclusions on human health. D.They are invaluable for further study.
Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.How Greenland Sharks Resist Aging B.How Greenland Sharks Live in the Sea
C.How Greenland Sharks Get Genetic Protection D.How Greenland Sharks Keep Healthy for Long

根据第一段中“Scientists have long wondered how these creatures manage to outlive all other vertebrates (脊椎动物). Through a series of studies, they desire to reveal the secrets behind their long life.(科学家长期以来一直想知道,这些生物是如何比其他所有脊椎动物活得更久的。通过一系列研究,他们希望揭开其长寿背后的秘密)”可知,科学家主动开展系列研究探索长寿秘密,对此持好奇的态度。
33.推理判断题。第二段中“Surprisingly, the eye tissue showed little sign of aging.(令人惊讶的是,眼组织几乎没有表现出衰老迹象)”指出格陵兰鲨的眼组织几乎没有衰老迹象,第三段中“However, not all organs benefit from such protection.(然而,并非所有器官都能获得这种保护)”和“Examining six Greenland sharks, his team discovered that their hearts accumulate tough scars and cellular damage over time. (研究小组对六只格陵兰鲨进行观察后发现,它们的心脏会随着时间推移积累坚硬的疤痕和细胞损伤)”提到并非所有器官都有这种保护,心脏会随时间积累疤痕和细胞损伤,由此可推知心脏的衰老速度比眼睛快。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“While studying living Greenland sharks is difficult owing to their deep-sea habitat — they can dive to 2,200 meters, Macdonald believes that understanding their long life can offer valuable insights into human aging. However, she cautions against drawing quick conclusions on human health, emphasizing that these discoveries are just the beginning of a much longer scientific journey.(虽然由于格陵兰鲨生活在深海环境,研究活体格陵兰鲨十分困难——它们可潜至2200米深,但Macdonald认为,了解它们长寿的机制有助于为人类衰老问题提供宝贵见解。不过,她也提醒不要轻易将这些发现用于判断人类健康状况,并强调这些成果只是漫长科学探索旅程的开端)”可知,Macdonald表示了解格陵兰鲨长寿的机制有助于为人类衰老问题提供宝贵见解,指出这些发现是漫长科研旅程的开端,说明这些发现对后续研究极具价值。
35.主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合第一段中“Scientists have long wondered how these creatures manage to outlive all other vertebrates (脊椎动物). Through a series of studies, they desire to reveal the secrets behind their long life.(科学家长期以来一直想知道,这些生物是如何比其他所有脊椎动物活得更久的。通过一系列研究,他们希望揭开其长寿背后的秘密)”可知,全文围绕科学家探索格陵兰鲨远超其他脊椎动物的长寿、抗衰机制展开:既介绍了眼组织的DNA修复抗衰特点,也说明了心脏应对衰老损伤的特殊机制,核心主题是格陵兰鲨的抗衰原理,A项“格陵兰鲨如何抵抗衰老”为最佳标题。

But trees are much more than just a pretty sight; they are vital organs of our planet, playing 56(1.5分) crucial role in maintaining a healthy environment, which is the very purpose of celebrating Arbor Day.
One of the most important functions of trees is their ability 57(1.5分) (act) as the “lungs of the earth”. Through the process of photosynthesis, they absorb carbon dioxide — a primary greenhouse gas — and release life-giving oxygen. By 58(1.5分) (store) carbon in their wood, leaves, and roots, trees help to regulate the global climate and slow down the pace of global warming.
Beyond cleaning the air, forests serve as the world’s most effective water and soil conservation system. The roots of trees bind the soil together, preventing it from 59(1.5分) (wash) away by heavy rains. This process 60(1.5分) (significant) reduces the risk of soil erosion, landslides, and flooding. Furthermore, forests act like giant sponges. They absorb rainfall, replenish groundwater supplies, 61(1.5分) help ensure a steady flow of water in rivers and springs.
Forests are also home 62(1.5分) more than 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity. They provide food, shelter, and breeding grounds for 63(1.5分) (count) species of animals, insects, and plants. In many ways, protecting forests 64(1.5分) (mean) protecting the intricate web of life on which we all depend.
However, our forests face constant 65(1.5分) (threat) from deforestation. That’s why Arbor Day is not just about planting new trees; it’s about raising awareness of the critical role forests play in ensuring a sustainable future for all living things.

“Nothing is so beautiful as spring—When weeds, in wheels, shoot long and lovely and lush.” However, there is no denying that early spring can be a tough time in the Midwest. It can take both people and animals by surprise with its unexpected snowstorms.
My house is built in a high position so that my backyard overlooks a large pond. Every spring, flocks of migratory birds (候鸟) chose to root in the pond on the way to their summer homes. They had a rest in the pond, looked for food to feed their baby birds and played with each other casually. This year, among others, hundreds of scaups, a type of diving duck, spent several days hanging out there, diving for food. Life was peaceful and warm for them. They spent hours swimming with each other. The older ones would run after the younger after they finished their breakfast. Every time the little ducks would spare no effort to escape and the open water around them would get bigger and bigger.
Then the snowstorm hit followed by a very cold night. The temperature dropped sharply. As the open water of the pond shrank into icy desolation (荒凉) the scaups took off for a more livable habitat (栖息地).
The next morning, I found that all birds had disappeared overnight except one lone female, who was diving energetically in her little circle of open water. Her movements and body heat had kept the ice from coming close. She bravely swam around as I watched her from the comfort of my warm home.
As time passed, the open water around the duck got smaller and smaller, and her movements slowed. Obviously, she was in danger. I watched with anxiety as she eventually stopped moving, and I feared she was dead. I decided to go out to have a look.
注意:
1.所续写的短文词数应为150左右;
Then it happened.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
This little duck’s friends probably saved her life.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then it happened. Two more ducks suddenly appeared, determined and energetic, landing next to her still body. And then more ducks came, and the circle of water came alive with their swimming and diving. Within minutes, the lone female, too, was swimming and diving happily, returning to consciousness by her friends’ presence. A wave of great joy swallowed the lively ducks and they enjoyed themselves excitedly.
This little duck’s friends probably saved her life. She wouldn’t have lasted another night in the frozen pond. And she, in turn, had done them a favor by keeping that small area of water open, so they had a place to stop and refresh themselves. It made me consider how we could have a deep effect on the people around us. A look, an action, a few words even our mere presence—might brighten someone’s day. It might change one’s path, or even save one’s life.

When we think of trees, we often picture their beauty — the lush green leaves in spring or the brilliant colors of autumn.
