Passage 1
Do you know that the average person uses about 150 liters of water every day? That is a lot of water! Most of this water is used for showering, flushing the toilet, washing clothes and dishes, and drinking.
But there are many places in the world where people do not have enough clean water. In some African countries, people walk for hours every day just to get a small bucket of water. This water is often dirty and causes diseases.
Scientists are working on ways to save water. One idea is to collect rainwater. Rainwater can be used for watering plants and washing cars. Another idea is to clean and reuse wastewater from factories and homes. This is called water recycling.
As students, we can also help save water. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. Fix dripping taps quickly. Take shorter showers. Every drop counts!
Let’s work together to protect our water resources for the future.

Passage 2
Water covers about 71% of the Earth’s surface, but only a small part of it is fresh water that we can use. Most of the water on Earth is salt water in the oceans. Fresh water is very important for all living things. We need it to drink, to grow food, and to keep clean.
However, in many places around the world, people do not have enough clean water. Some places are very dry and get little rain. Other places have water, but it is polluted. Every year, millions of people get sick because of dirty water. Children are especially easy to get hurt by water-borne diseases.
Scientists are working hard to find ways to solve the water problem. Some countries build desalination plants (海水淡化厂) to turn salt water into fresh water. But this costs a lot of money and uses much energy. Other countries try to save water by using it again after cleaning. Farmers are also learning to use less water to grow crops.
What can we do to help? Small actions at home can make a big difference. For example, fixing a dripping tap can save thousands of liters of water each year. Turning off the tap while brushing teeth saves about 10 liters of water each time. Every drop counts!

Passage 6
The Amazon rainforest is the world’s biggest. It is in South America. It is so wide that it covers a little more than half the size of China! The Amazon River runs through the rainforest. It’s the world’s second longest river. The Amazon covers much of Brazil. The green colour on the national flag (国旗) of Brazil stands for the rainforest.
However, climate change and human activities make it “sick”. Usually, the rainforest can fix itself. But now, it feels too “tired” to get better. According to a new study, many trees there may die, and the Amazon rainforest may turn into hot, dry grasslands in a few years.
Why is the Amazon rainforest “sick”? The Amazon is one of the world’s wettest places. But since 2005, three droughts have hit the rainforest. That was because of climate change. The trees don’t have enough water to grow. What’s worse, as they become dry, they can easily catch fire. Besides, people cut down rainforest trees for wood. They burn the forest to make farmland. All these kinds of activities made about 17% of the rainforest disappear.
________ The Amazon rainforest is like the “lungs” of our planet. The rich plants there take carbon dioxide (CO₂) out of the air and make oxygen. They make more than 20% of the planet’s oxygen. If the Amazon rainforest “dies”, there will be more CO₂ and our earth will become even hotter. The Amazon rainforest is also home to over 3 million animals and plants. Many of them can’t live anywhere else. They would very likely just disappear.
1.According to the passage, what is NOT the reason that makes the Amazon rainforest “sick”?
A.There are many forest fires. B.Climate change.
C.People cut down trees. D.Too many animals and plants live there.
2.What will happen if the Amazon rainforest dies?
A.People will lose their lungs. B.Many animals and plants will die.
C.We will feel colder. D.There will be more oxygen.
3.The underlined word “droughts” means “________” in Paragraph 3.
A.too little rain B.too cold weather C.too much rain D.too much fire
4.Which of the following statements about the Amazon rainforest is TRUE?
A.It is twice the size of China.
B.It is in North America.
C.It makes more than 20% of the planet’s oxygen.
D.More than 3 million kinds of plants live there.
5.Choose the best sentence to fill in the “________” in the passage.
A.Where is the Amazon rainforest?
B.Who lives in the Amazon rainforest?
C.How can we protect the Amazon rainforest?
D.What will happen if we lose the the Amazon rainforest?
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.A 4.C 5.D
【导语】本文介绍了亚马逊雨林的现状、面临的威胁,以及它对地球生态系统的重要性。
【详解】1.根据文章第三段可知,亚马逊雨林“生病”的原因包括气候变化(climate change)、干旱导致树木缺水(don’t have enough water)、容易发生火灾(catch fire)、人们砍伐树木(cut down trees)以及焚烧森林(burn the forest)。文中并未提及“居住在那里的动植物太多”是导致雨林生病的原因。
2.最后一段“The Amazon rainforest is also home to over 3 million animals and plants. Many of them can’t live anywhere else. They would very likely just disappear.”可知,如果雨林消失,许多依赖它生存的动植物将走向灭绝。
3.根据文章第三段画线词后的句子“The trees don’t have enough water to grow. What’s worse, as they become dry...”可知,树木没有足够的水生长且变得干燥,说明“droughts”指的是降雨过少导致的干旱,即“too little rain”。
4.第4段“They make more than 20% of the planet’s oxygen.”可知,亚马逊雨林产生地球上超过20%的氧气,该表述正确。
5.空格后的段落讲述了雨林作为“地球之肺”的作用,以及如果雨林消失,二氧化碳增加、地球变暖、动植物消失的后果。因此,用“What will happen if we lose the Amazon rainforest?”引出下文最为合适。

Passage 2
Have you ever noticed how a simple smile can change the atmosphere of a room? Smiling is a universal language that everyone understands, no matter where they come from.
Studies have shown that smiling has many benefits for our health. When you smile, your brain releases chemicals called endorphins. These are natural painkillers that also make you feel happier. Smiling can lower your stress levels and even boost your immune system. So smiling is not just good for your mind but also for your body.
Smiling also helps you connect with others. When you smile at someone, they are likely to smile back. This creates a positive feedback loop that makes both of you feel better. In social situations, people who smile often appear more friendly and trustworthy. A simple smile can start a conversation or mend a broken relationship.
However, some people find it hard to smile because they are going through difficult times. If you see someone who looks sad, offering a warm smile might be the first step to help them feel better. Remember, you don’t need a reason to smile. Sometimes the best time to smile is when you feel like you have nothing to smile about.

Passage 4
(25-26八年级上·上海崇明·期中)Is the Internet good or bad? It’s always a hot topic in our daily life. Different people may have different answers. Since the Internet came into being, it brought us pleasure and tears.

When modern people need to record (记录) some important things quickly, they don’t find a pen and a piece of paper to write, but to open their mobile phone or computer to record. Now everyone can get digital maps in a few seconds by using computers or mobile phones. They are easy and fast for users. Do you remember the last time to look at a paper map?

Passage 5
Six-year-old Brooke Neitzel wanted a dollhouse. So she ordered one just by telling the family’s smart speaker what she wanted. Within days, a dollhouse worth more than $160 came in the mail. Brooke’s parents were surprised. They didn’t keep the dollhouse. But they decided to keep their smart speaker. They like other things it can do.
Like Brooke, you may have a smart speaker at home, like the Amazon Echo or the Google Home. Each smart speaker uses Wi-Fi. It is activated by voice commands. If you ask a question, the speaker’s digital assistant will answer. It can tell you about the weather or read the news. Amazon now offers voice shopping. Users can buy things just by stating what they’d like. That’s what Brooke did. With Amazon Echo, shoppers can order from Amazon. With Google Home, they have more choices. They can order from more than 40 stores, like Walmart or Target.
Shopping by voice is easy, but it has some possible downsides. For one, it may be too easy to purchase things. An order is placed as soon as you’ve said it. There’s no time to change your mind. You also don’t have a chance to shop around.
Voice shopping might work best for things you buy a lot. It’s probably safe to order batteries or pet food, for example. But think twice before asking for a TV. Will voice shopping last? That’s up to shoppers. So far, it’s too early to tell.

Passage 6
(25-26八年级上·上海宝山·期中)Everyone is talking about artificial intelligence (AI) these days. Have you ever dreamed of using AI to help with your studies?
Well, don’t just dream about it. The “AI-powered study rooms” that are popping up all over the country promise to do just that.
Once you sign up, you’ll get a tablet (平板电脑) with “AI apps”. These apps will “create personalised study plans” and “tailor exercises based on your progress” to help you learn more effectively. These study rooms also claim (声称) that their services are more affordable (价格合理的) than traditional tutors (家教). The tablet, along with the first month of tutoring, usually costs 5,000 yuan. After that, it’s about 2,000 yuan per month.
Don’t these promises sound tempting? But hold your horses! You’d better finish reading this article before asking your parents to pay the money.
Many parents who have signed their children up for these “AI-powered study rooms” are far from impressed. The “AI apps” don’t live up to their promises. They just spot mistakes and offer repetitive exercises. On top of that, students basically follow pre-recorded lessons. “These so-called ‘AI-powered study rooms’ are more of a scam than a real display of new technologies,” some parents complain.
Don’t feel discouraged, though. Your dream of learning with AI is still alive. There is just no need for you to spend a fortune on a paid “study room” to jump on the AI bandwagon.
From Moonshot AI to DeepSeek, many companies offer their AI chatbots for free. You can use them to help with your studies right at home. The key is to learn how to use them wisely. Asking AI to do all the exercises in the school assignments for you simply isn’t the way to go! Instead, you could ask for clearer and more detailed explanations if you’re confused about something in class. You could also share some English sentences or compositions with an AI chatbot and ask it to point out any mistakes. It could even give you some exercises to help you improve. It will take some time and practice to become a smart AI user, but that effort will serve you better than just sitting in an “AI-powered study room”.
1.“AI-powered study rooms” promise to ________.
A.replace schoolteachers B.offer free online courses
C.help students learn better D.show students how to use AI
2.Mr. Yang would like to sign his son up for an “AI-powered study room”. He should prepare ________ yuan for the first six months of service.
A.12,000 B.13,000 C.15,000 D.17,000
3.Why do some parents complain about “AI-powered study rooms”?
A.Because their services are too expensive.
B.Because they don’t really offer personalised tutoring.
C.Because students are actually taught by human teachers.
D.Because their “AI apps” provide only very basic lessons.
4.The author suggests students ________.
A.study using their own tablets B.hire a traditional human tutor
C.study with free AI chatbots at home D.forget about their dream of studying with AI
5.Students should avoid asking AI chatbots to ________.
A.explain difficult topics B.correct their compositions
C.offer targeted exercises D.complete their homework
【答案】1.C 2.C 3.B 4.C 5.D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍AI学习机房的宣传、存在的弊端以及作者建议学生免费在家使用AI聊天工具学习。
【详解】1.根据第三段中“These apps will ‘create personalised study plans’ and ‘tailor exercises based on your progress’ to help you learn more effectively.”可知,AI学习机房承诺帮助学生学得更好。
2.根据第三段中“The tablet, along with the first month of tutoring, usually costs 5,000 yuan. After that, it’s about 2,000 yuan per month.”可知,首月5000元,后面每个月2000元,6个月总费用:5000+2000×5=15000元。
3.根据第五段中“The ‘AI apps’ don’t live up to their promises. They just spot mistakes and offer repetitive exercises…students basically follow pre‑recorded lessons.”可知,家长抱怨的原因是它并没有真正提供个性化辅导。
4.根据第七段中“many companies offer their AI chatbots for free. You can use them to help with your studies right at home.”可知,作者建议学生在家使用免费的AI聊天机器人学习。
5.根据第七段中“Asking AI to do all the exercises in the school assignments for you simply isn’t the way to go!”可知,学生应当避免让AI聊天机器人完成家庭作业。

Passage 3
(25-26八年级上·上海徐汇·期中)
Curiosity: A Lifelong Gift
Curiosity is an inborn ability that stays with us throughout life. Let’s see how it shows at different stages.
Babies
When babies see new or unfamiliar things, their eyes light up. They stare, reach out, and try to understand these unknown objects — maybe a colorful rattle (拨浪鼓), a moving curtain, or even their own dry hands. They wave their fingers, grab at toys, and laugh happily as they connect “this thing” to“ that feeling.” It’s their first step to explore the world, one small discovery at a time.
Preschoolers
Preschool kids are little explorers with boundless energy. They spend ages playing with toys, taking them apart (if allowed) and putting them back together— whether it’s a building block tower, a plastic car, or a stuffed animal with removable parts. They might ask, “What’s inside?” as they pry open (弄明白) a puzzle, or giggle while mixing mud and water to see “what happens.” Every toy, every puddle, every bug under a rock is a mystery waiting to be solved.
School Children
At school, curiosity drives kids to ask endless questions. “Why is the sky blue?” “How do birds fly?” “Do fish sleep?” These questions aren’t annoying — they’re signs of a hungry mind eager to learn. They lean forward in class when the teacher talks about dinosaurs, rush to the library to check out books on space, and even argue playfully with friends over “the right answer”— all because they can’t wait to know more.
Grown- ups
Even as adults, we stay curious. We read books to learn new ideas, whether it’s a novel set in a foreign land or a guide to growing houseplants. We travel to discover new cultures — tasting street food in a bustling market, learning a few words of a local language, or marveling at ancient temples. We try new hobbies too: baking sourdough (发酸面团) bread to see how yeast works, picking up a guitar to learn a favorite song, or gardening to watch seeds turn into flowers. Curiosity never fades; it just takes new forms.
So, never lose your curiosity. It’s the key to a life full of learning and wonder.
1.What do babies do when they meet with something new, according to the passage?
A.They ask simple questions like “What’s this?”.
B.They try to grab, stare, and feel the unknown object.
C.They share it with other babies around them.
D.They wait for adults to explain it to them.
2.Why do preschoolers spend a lot of time with toys?
A.They want to show off their toys to friends.
B.They need to practice hand skills by playing.
C.They are trying to figure out how toys work.
D.They are told to do so by their parents.
3.What does the underlined words “boundless energy” probably mean in the passage?
A.Very little energy B.Energy only for playing
C.Energy that is easily lost D.Energy that never runs out

A.A mother watching her baby reach for a rattle, smiling at his curiosity.
B.A father helping his preschooler take apart a toy to see how it works.
C.A teacher reading a book about ancient civilizations to learn new stories.
D.A neighbor chatting with others about the weather, just to pass time.
5.What is the main-idea of the passage?
A.Curiosity changes its forms as people grow older.
B.Curiosity is a lifelong ability that enriches every stage of life.
C.Different age groups have different ways to explore the world.
D.Adults should learn from children to keep their curiosity alive.

Passage 5
(25-26八年级上·上海·期末)As a young piano player and a 7th-grader, Toby has always been curious about the effects of music on people. He has done many tests on this. When he learned that people find it hard to focus, he wondered, “Could music help us improve attention?”
This 14-year-old boy started to search online for the effects of different kinds of music. He wanted to find out if listening to certain kinds of sounds could make people more focused. He then started an online test. He asked 65 people to play a computer game—they had to press a key when they saw certain numbers. Those people were divided into three groups. During the game, one group played in silence. Another group listened to a song from a video game. The third group heard a different tone (音调) in each ear, which created a special beating sound.
After the test, Toby compared the results. He found that the group with the special two-tone sound did the best. The group with the video game music did the worst. Although the results weren’t strong enough to be completely sure, Toby didn’t see that as a failure. For him, it was a starting point for more learning. “If you try something and it doesn’t work, that’s not a problem,” he said. “It’s part of the study process.”

Passage 6
When John Todd was a child, he loved to explore the woods around his house, watching how nature solved problems. A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing (流动) through plants and along rocks where tiny living things lived. When he got older, John started to wonder if this could be used to clean up the messes people were making.
After studying agriculture (农业), medicine, and fisheries in college, John went back to watching nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria (细菌)? Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing chemicals? With the right mix of animals and plants, he discovered, maybe he could clean up waste the way nature did. He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine.
The task John set for himself was to get rid of harmful substances (物质) from some sludge (污泥). First, he built series of clear tanks connected to each other. Then he went around to local ponds and streams and brought back some plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited. Little by little, these different kinds of life got used to one another and formed their own ecosystem. After a few weeks, John added the sludge.
He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it! Within weeks, it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.
Over the years, John has taken on many big jobs. He developed a greenhouse—like facility that treated sewage (污水) from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou, a city in southeast China.
“Ecological design” is the name John gives to what he does. “Life on Earth is kind of a box of spare parts for the inventor,” he says. “You put living things in new relationships and watch what's happening. Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair.”
1.What does the word “this” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A.The woods around John’s house. B.The way nature cleans a dirty stream.
C.The study of agriculture and medicine. D.The mix of animals and plants.
2.What can we learn about John from the first two paragraphs?
A.He was interested in travelling. B.He enjoyed being alone.
C.He had a curious mind. D.He wanted to be a doctor.
3.Why did John put the sludge into the tanks?
A.To feed the animals. B.To build an ecosystem.
C.To protect the plants. D.To test the eco-machine.
4.What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Fuzhou?
A.To review John’s research plans. B.To add a proof of John’s idea.
C.To show John is a slashie. D.To clear up doubts about John’s invention.
5.What is the base for John’s work?
A.Nature can repair itself. B.Living things need water to survive.
C.Life on Earth is different. D.Most tiny living things live in groups.
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.D 4.B 5.A

1.What happens when you smile according to the passage?
A.Your brain releases chemicals that make you feel happier.

1.Which fits best on the blank line in the Venn graph (韦恩图) above according to the passage?
