Unit 2 Helping at Home
Lesson 4 Fuel up
I. Teaching Aims
1. To listen to and chant the song "Helping around the house" with rhythm.
2. To recognize the "w" and "y" sounds and find words containing these sounds.
3. To understand the listening task and match the children with their farm chores.
4. To use "Can you help me...?" and "I can..." in pair work.
5. To develop the habit of helping parents with housework and farm work.
II. Key and Difficult Points
Key points:
- Chant comprehension and recitation.
- Phonics: the sounds of Ww and Yy.
- Farm chore vocabulary: water the vegetables, sweep the yard, feed the chickens, wash up, pick the apples, feed the pigs, milk the cows, cut the grass, get the eggs.
- Sentence patterns: "Can you help me...?" / "OK! I can..."
Difficult points:
- Distinguishing the /w/ and /j/ sounds in pronunciation.
- Using "Can you help me...?" and "I can..." fluently in real situations.
III. Teaching Tools
Textbook (pp.20-21), blackboard and chalk, PPT (optional), word cards (farm chores), chant audio, pictures of farm work.
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Warm-up (5 mins)
[Purpose: To activate students' prior knowledge about farm life and chores.]
1. Greet students and ask: "Do you have a farm near your home? What can you see on a farm?" Elicit words like cow, chicken, vegetable, apple.
2. Show pictures of farm work and ask students to say what they see.
Step 2: Listen and chant (10 mins)
[Purpose: To familiarize students with the rhythm and vocabulary of the new chant.]
1. Tell students: "Today we will learn a new song about helping on the farm." Play the chant audio once. Students just listen.
2. Play again. Students clap to the rhythm.
3. Write the chant on PPT and teach line by line:
Dad and Mum work hard on the farm.
Together we help around the house.
Water the vegetables. Sweep the yard. Feed the chickens. And wash up.
You and me, let's work hard. We're good helpers to Mum and Dad.
4. Students repeat after audio, then chant together with actions (miming watering, sweeping, feeding).
5. Group chant: Divide class into 4 groups, each group chants one line.
Step 3: Read the chant and write (8 mins)
[Purpose: To help students notice and practice the "w" and "y" sounds.]
1. Ask: "Which words in the chant have the letter W or Y?" Write Ww and Yy on the blackboard.
2. Guide students to find words: work (Ww), yard (Yy). Write them on the board.
3. Teach the sounds: /w/ as in "work", /j/ as in "yard". Model the pronunciation, students repeat.
4. Write more examples on board: Ww — water, wash, work; Yy — yard, you, yellow.
5. Quick game: Teacher says a word, students shout "W!" or "Y!" depending on which letter sound they hear.
Step 4: Listen and match (8 mins)
[Purpose: To practice listening for specific information about farm chores.]
1. Show the table on PPT (Activity 3). Point to the three kids: Huahua, Yuanyuan, Beibei.
2. Tell students: "Listen and match. What do the kids do on the farm?" Read the six chores one by one:
pick the apples, feed the pigs, milk the cows, cut the grass, water the vegetables, get the eggs.
3. Play the recording. Students match each kid with two chores.
4. Check answers together. Write the correct matches on the board.
Step 5: Work in pairs (7 mins)
[Purpose: To use the target language in a communicative situation.]
1. Model the dialogue with a student:
T: "Can you help me on the farm?"
S: "OK! I can feed the pigs."
2. Students choose two people from Activity 3 and make their own dialogues.
3. Invite 2-3 pairs to act out in front of the class.
Step 6: Summary and homework (2 mins)
[Purpose: To consolidate learning and extend practice at home.]
1. Summarize: "Today we learned a chant about helping on the farm. We also learned the sounds of Ww and Yy."
2. Homework:
a. Chant the song "Helping around the house" to your parents.
b. Draw a picture of yourself helping at home or on a farm, and write two sentences: "I can... I can..."

六、教学反思
本课围绕"农场帮忙"主题展开,chant 韵律感强,学生跟读积极性较高。语音环节 Ww 和 Yy 的区分是难点,部分学生对 /w/ 和 /j/ 的发音混淆,后续可增加对比操练和口型示范。听力匹配环节信息量较大,后进生容易跟不上,下次可提前发词卡供学生预习。Pair work 环节学生能基本完成对话,但个别学生仍依赖课本,今后可增加情境图片辅助,鼓励脱稿表达。
