Unit 2 Helping at Home
Lesson 2 (In Focus)
I. Teaching Aims
1. To understand and use the key sentence patterns: "Can you help me...?" "May I...?" and their short answers.
2. To understand the dialogue between Sam and his dad about doing chores at home.
3. To match the correct dialogue sentences in exercise 3 according to the context.
4. To work in pairs and make dialogues about helping with chores using the target language.
5. To develop the awareness of helping parents with housework.
II. Key and Difficult Points
Key points:
(1) The sentence patterns "Can you help me clean the floor?" "May I sweep the floor first?" and their answers "Sure!" "Yes, please do." "OK!"
(2) The key phrases: clean the floor, take out the rubbish, sweep the floor, make the bed, wash the dishes.
Difficult points:
(1) To understand the use of "May I...?" for asking permission and to use it appropriately.
(2) To match the dialogue sentences correctly by understanding the context of the conversation.
III. Teaching Tools
Textbook, blackboard, chalk, PPT (optional), word cards, audio player.
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Lead-in (5 mins)
[Purpose] To review the chore vocabulary from Lesson 1 and lead to the new topic.
Teacher shows pictures of different chores (clean the floor, wash the dishes, make the bed, take out the rubbish, sweep the floor) and asks students to say the words. Then teacher asks: "Do you help your parents at home? What chores can you do?" to activate students' prior knowledge.
Step 2 Presentation (10 mins)
[Purpose] To present and drill the key sentence patterns in the dialogue.
Teacher plays the audio for the dialogue. Students listen and read. Teacher writes the key sentences on the blackboard: "Can you help me clean the floor?" "May I sweep the floor first?" "Sure! The floor is clean now." Teacher explains the meaning of "May I...?" (used for asking permission) and drills the pronunciation of the new sentences. Students repeat after the teacher.
Step 3 Practice (10 mins)
[Purpose] To practice reading comprehension and sentence matching.
Students do exercise 3: Read and match. They read the four sentences (a-d) and match them with the four blanks in the dialogue. Teacher checks the answers: 1-d, 2-a, 3-c, 4-b. Then students read the complete dialogue together and in pairs.
Step 4 Production (8 mins)
[Purpose] To use the target language in real communication situations.
Students do exercise 4: Work in pairs. Look at the pictures and make their own dialogues. For example: "Can you make the bed?" "OK!" "Can you wash the dishes?" "OK!" Teacher walks around to help and gives feedback. Some pairs perform their dialogues in front of the class.
Step 5 Summary and Homework (2 mins)
[Purpose] To consolidate the key language points.
Teacher summarizes the key sentences on the blackboard. Homework: (1) Read the dialogue three times. (2) Help your parents with one chore at home and write one sentence about it, e.g. "I can clean the floor."

六、教学反思
本节课通过图片导入和对话操练,学生基本掌握了"Can you...?"和"May I...?"的用法。但在匹配练习中,部分后进生在理解语境后选择句子仍有犹豫,今后可增加情境图片辅助理解;Pair work环节个别学生仍依赖课本朗读,下次可先提供句型提示卡,让学生先同桌互说再展示,降低开口压力。
