Have you ever wondered how people paid for things in the past? Let’s take a quick trip through the history of payment!
The Age of Physical Money
For centuries, people used physical objects for payment. At first, they exchanged goods (货品) directly—a farmer might trade a bag of rice for a fisherman’s catch. Later, shells, metals, and finally coins and paper money appeared. People had to carry cash and make deals face-to-face.
The Rise of Electronic Payments
The 20th century brought a big change with bank cards and credit cards. People could pay without cash. Then, online shopping made electronic payments popular. You could buy a book or a plane ticket with a few clicks through online banking. However, some people worried about the safety of their personal information when paying online.
The Digital Payment Revolution
Today, digital payments dominate our lives. Using smartphones, people scan QR codes (二维码) to pay for everything from supermarket shopping to bus rides. In China, mobile payments like Alipay and WeChat Pay have become part of our daily life. Some places are even developing digital money. Li Wei, a 15-year-old junior high school student, spends his free time on small inventions instead of playing online games. With his hands, he creates practical tools to solve small problems, showing a teenager’s sense of responsibility through his love and hard work.
At school, Li Wei does well in all subjects, especially in science and maths. He always listens carefully in class and takes notes patiently. He also likes thinking independently and has creative questions during group discussions. It is understood that his journey of invention started with a science class when he was 12 years old.
At that time, his science teacher played some videos about young student inventors in class. These inventors helped others with their practical, small creations. Their stories deeply touched Li Wei and he made up his mind to try making simple machines which can work by themselves.
Now, Li Wei has successfully made a smart rubbish bin. This rubbish bin can not only open its cover itself when people walk near it, but also separate (分开) dry waste and wet waste into different storage areas, making it very convenient to use. Before he finished the bin, he tried many times and corrected several small mistakes again and again. When talking about the inspiration for the invention, Li Wei said that it came to his mind suddenly one day because his grandma had difficulty moving and reaching the rubbish bin. He hopes this invention can solve the daily problems for the elderly and make their lives easier.
“I feel really happy when my family and neighbors use my invention,” Li Wei said in an interview. For him, inventing things is not just a hobby, but also growth and more practice. “I will keep inventing and try to create more practical, small creations to help more people in need.” He believes every teenager can make a difference as long as they keep learning and never give up.

Nowadays, more and more young people are following Chinese-style daily activities to stay healthy, such as drinking tea, soaking(浸) their feet in hot water, and practicing baduanjin. They have found that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) culture matches modern scientific health ideas. This phenomenon (现象) shows that young people are increasingly interested in a slow life.
Baduanjin dates back to the Song Dynasty and is now being picked up again by young people. Every weekend, many young people go to Beijing’s Baiyun Temple to take baduanjin classes. The space is limited and usually fully booked within a minute, mostly by young people.
So why has baduanjin become so popular among young people?
Firstly, baduanjin helps people keep fit. Many young people say they sleep better, their neck and shoulders are less painful, and their hands and feet are no longer cold in winter after practising it.
Secondly, baduanjin can give young people energy. Young people spend a lot of time on their phones in their free time and seldom go outdoors. According to the book The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Medicine, if one stays indoors for a long time, their energy will disappear; so people need to go outside to get some energy. Practising baduanjin outdoors can make them energetic. Then they can do better at work.
Thirdly, baduanjin helps young people live in the present. In modern society, too many people only care about the future, such as what they will become, what job they will get, and what their future life will be like. They pay no attention to their daily lives. By practicing baduanjin, young people can calm themselves down and better understand their true needs.
Chinese-style health care activities are widely accepted. These practices, especially for young people, make their lives more colourful.
11. What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph?
A. Young people don’t agree with the ideas of TCM.
B. Young people cannot get used to a slow life.
C. Young people like Chinese healthcare methods.
D. Young people are interested in modern health ideas.
12. What does the example of Baiyun Temple suggest?
A. Baiyun Temple has a long history.
B. Baduanjin classes are cheap for young people.
C. Baiyun Temple is a famous place of interest in Beijing.
D. Baduanjin classes are very popular among young people.
13. Why is The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Medicine mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. To encourage people to read ancient books.
B. To explain why people need to go outdoors.
C. To show that people spend more time indoors.
D. To introduce a book about traditional Chinese medicine.
14. Which is the right structure of the passage?
A. 12/3/4/567 B. 1/23/45/67 C. 1/2/3/456/7 D. 1/2/34/56/7
D
Every country in the world has its own special goods. For example, Canada produces a lot of wood. Ecuador produces a lot of bananas. Spain produces a lot of olive oil. Countries around the world sell their products to other countries.
Tariffs (关税) are the taxes (税款) that a government imposes (强制实行) on the goods they import from another country. If the government of a country decides to impose 25% tariffs on the wood imported from Canada, then $100 of wood from Canada will cost $125 in this country.
Tariffs are a part of the import‑export world economy. Governments can use tariffs to protect their own economy. Countries can reach trade agreements to limit tariffs and promote (促进) trade.
What will happen when tariffs are too high? When tariffs are set too high, buyers in the country that sets the high tariffs cannot afford the imported goods any more. They may either turn to another source of goods, or have to limit their spending to afford the imported goods. This influences the economy in both countries, whether it is the country importing the goods or the country exporting the goods. When two countries use tariffs in an argument, this is called a trade war.
Many countries reach free trade agreements to promote the trade. They often limit tariffs. For example, the European Union countries do not have any tariffs on goods traded among themselves. However, these agreements can be broken. For example, a country may break a free trade agreement because of safety reasons.
15. According to the passage, what are tariffs?
A. The goods that a country exports. B. The agreements between countries.
C. The taxes on imported goods. D. The resources of a country.
16. What are some results of raising tariffs too high?
①Imported goods become more expensive.
②Consumers may not be able to afford imported goods.
③Trade wars may start.
④Both importing and exporting countries’ economies may be influenced.
⑤More goods can be sold to other countries.
A. ①②③⑤ B. ③④⑤ C. ①②③④ D. ①③⑤
17. If a country imposes a 15% tariff on cars imported from Japan, and the original price of a car is $20,000, what will be the new price of the car?
A. $21,500. B. $23,000. C. $22,000. D. $24,000.
18. What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The tariffs. B. The buyers. C. The countries. D. The governments.
19. What can be inferred from the last paragraph of the passage?
A. Free trade agreements are always successful.
B. National security is not important in trade.
C. Free trade agreements may be broken.
D. Trade wars are common and easy to solve.

Intangible cultural heritage (ICH,非物质文化遗产) is an important part of traditional Chinese culture. It shows how Chinese civilization has been passed down from the past to the present. Now, people from all walks of life carry on ICH in their own ways.
Zhao Hui is an inheritor (传承人) of the traditional natural dyeing craft (天然染色工艺). As a child, Zhao Hui learned natural dyeing from her grandmother and father. When she grew up, she started a workshop with her friends. At first, she didn’t have enough money to run the workshop, but she believed in what she was doing. No matter how hard things got, she chose to keep going. Zhao Hui has kept the tradition alive by designing everyday objects like dresses, scarves, and bags and teaching visitors how to dye them.
Xu Kai works as a restorer (修复师) in a museum. In 1999, Xu Kai, a university student, visited Master Gao Guolin. The visit changed the direction of his life. He soon began to learn skills from Gao. Up to now, Xu has restored more than 10,000 porcelain (瓷器) pieces. He follows a “one object, one solution” rule and treats every porcelain piece with great care. To him, restoration means more than fixing the physical part. It also means keeping the piece’s spirit alive.
ICH is also walking into schools now. In Changsha, excellent Hunan Opera artists perform at schools. While watching the performance, the students form hearts with their hands to show their love. In many places of Shanxi, ICH has taken root in local schools. Students learn about traditional arts such as paper-cuts and Peking Opera masks. So when a performer takes the stage and children make paper-cuts with care, the past and the present shake hands. Tradition isn’t just alive—it’s having its best life yet.

Pocket money, spend wisely
Dear friends,
I’m glad to talk about pocket money management with you.
I usually get my pocket money from my parents as a reward for helping with housework. Sometimes I can also get some during festivals. As for my spending habits, I seldom buy useless things. Most of my money is saved in my money box, and I spend a little on books and stationery. Here are my suggestions for teenagers. First, think twice before buying something. Second, try to save part of our pocket money instead of spending all at once. Besides, we can spend some money on meaningful things, such as books or charity.
Pocket money teaches us responsibility. Let’s learn to spend money wisely. Thank you for listening!
