Weekend Family Traditions: The Smiths’ Story
Weekends are a special time for families to get together. For the Smith family—Mr. Smith, Mrs. Smith, 15-year-old Emma, and 12-year-old Jack—weekends have a set of traditions that they all love.
Every Saturday morning, the family starts with “Breakfast Together”. Mrs. Smith makes pancakes, and everyone helps: Mr. Smith mixes the batter, Emma cuts fruits like strawberries and bananas, and Jack sets the table. “We talk about our week while eating,” Emma said. “Last Saturday, Jack told us about his soccer game, and dad shared a funny story from work. It’s a great way to start the day.”
After breakfast, they do “Family Chores” together. They divide the work: Mr. Smith cleans the car, Mrs. Smith does the laundry, Emma tidies the garden, and Jack cleans his bedroom. “We used to argue about chores,” Jack said. “Now we do it together, and it’s fun. Last week, we sang songs while cleaning, and it only took 40 minutes instead of two hours!”
In the afternoon, they have “Free Time Choice”. Sometimes they go to the park for a walk, sometimes they watch a movie at home, and sometimes they visit Emma’s grandma. “Grandma lives alone, so we like to take her to the supermarket or have tea with her,” Mrs. Smith said. “Last Sunday, we helped grandma plant flowers in her garden. Emma taught grandma how to take photos with her phone, and Jack played chess with her. It made grandma very happy.”
Saturday evening is “Game Night”. They play board games like chess, Monopoly, or card games. “We never play video games on Game Night,” Mr. Smith said. “We want to talk and laugh together. Sometimes we argue about who wins, but it’s all in good fun.”
On Sundays, they usually relax at home. Emma does her homework, Jack reads books, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith prepare for the new week. But they always have dinner together at 6 p.m. “Weekends are short,” Emma said. “But our traditions make every weekend special. They make our family feel close.”
Family traditions don’t have to be big or expensive. They just need to be time for family members to share, talk, and care for each other.

William used to be a kid who was not brave enough to express his true thoughts. He always agreed with everything his friends said.
One day, he and his friends were discussing whether middle school students should bring their phones to school. His friends all thought they should, but William didn’t agree. However, because he didn’t have the courage to speak out, he chose to agree with them. But he knew that always going against his own will to agree with others made him feel very uncomfortable. So he told his mom about this.
“I just can’t tell people what I really think or want. It’s too difficult for me,” said William. “You can’t or you don’t want to?” Mom asked patiently.
“I guess I don’t want to. I’m afraid to be different,” answered William.
His mom smiled and handed him a famous book, The Analects of Confucius (《论语》). William knew the book but he didn’t know what his mom meant. However, he started reading the book every night before bed. One day, he read the phrase, “Gentlemen have peace but disagree; flunkies (小人) agree but have no peace.” He didn’t understand it, so he asked his mom.
“It means gentlemen achieve harmony (和谐), but they don’t just blindly agree with others. They have their own ideas, and they can tell the truth bravely. Flunkies agree easily, but they don’t really work together,” his mom explained.
Suddenly, William was inspired and realized that having different ideas was not a bad thing at all. He was very thankful for the book. He decided to be brave enough to express his own thoughts. He did as he said.
From then on, he was no longer afraid to speak out. To his surprise, he found that the friendship had become even stronger!

For most of Chinese history, travelling took a long time. My grandfather still remembers his first trip to Beijing in 1978: the train ran for more than twenty hours, and the carriage was crowded and noisy.
Today the same journey takes about four hours by high-speed train. China now has the largest high-speed railway network in the world. Trains run at over 300 kilometres an hour, and they leave every few minutes. Passengers can book tickets online, and they don’t even need a paper ticket — a phone is enough.
The high-speed railway has changed people’s lives in many ways. Business people can attend a meeting in another city in the morning and return home for dinner. Students can choose universities far from their hometowns. Tourists can visit more places during a short holiday. Some people have even moved to smaller cities because the train makes it easy to travel to work.
The railway has also brought changes to small towns. Towns with a high-speed station have grown quickly, and new shops, hotels and factories have appeared near them. In my cousin’s town, the number of visitors has doubled since the station opened.
Of course, high-speed tickets are more expensive than ordinary train tickets, and not every town can have a station. But for most people, the speed and comfort are worth the money. Travelling in China will never be the same again.
61.How long did the trip to Beijing take in 1978?
A.About four hours. B.More than twenty hours. C.Two days. D.Ten hours.
62.What is enough for passengers to get on a high-speed train now?
A.A paper ticket. B.A phone. C.A letter. D.A key.
63.Which is NOT mentioned as a change brought by high-speed trains?
A.Business people can return home for dinner. B.Students can study far from home.
C.People can travel to the moon. D.Some people move to smaller cities.
64.What has happened to towns with a high-speed station?
A.They have grown quickly. B.They have become smaller.
C.They have lost visitors. D.They have closed their shops.
65.What does the writer think of high-speed travel?
A.It is too expensive for everyone. B.Its speed and comfort are worth the money.
C.It is slower than before. D.It is only for business people.

【详解】61.由第一段“the train ran for more than twenty hours”可知,1978 年去北京要二十多个小时。
62.由第二段“they don’t even need a paper ticket—a phone is enough”可知,一部手机就够了。
63.逐一核对原文第三段列举的高铁带来的生活改变,商务人士异地参会后可回家吃晚饭、学生可选择离家远的大学、部分人迁居小城市均有提及,“人们可以前往月球旅行”未在文中出现。故选C。
64.由第四段“Towns with a high-speed station have grown quickly,”可知,这类城镇发展十分迅速。
65.由最后一段“the speed and comfort are worth the money”可知,作者认为高铁的速度与舒适值这个价。

The human brain weighs about 1.4 kilograms, but it can hold much more information than most computers. However, there is another difference between humans and computers. Computers don’t forget information they are given, but humans often do. No one remembers everything, and luckily we don’t usually have to. 66 Here are some suggestions.
Try to use new information immediately. For example, if you meet someone who says “Hi! I’m Carlos.”, don’t just say “Hello”. Repeat the person’s name. Say “Hello, Carlos.”
Break a big number into smaller parts. For example, it’s hard to memorize 109244153. But if you break it into three parts—109/244/153—it becomes easier.
67 This will help you keep it in mind longer, especially for memorizing formulas (公式) or facts.
Always review information. 68 For example, before you go to sleep, it’s a good idea to review the new things you learned that day.
69 It is always easier to remember things through discussions. You can have a discussion about what’s right and what’s wrong, and it will lead to the right answer.
Never tell yourself that you have a bad memory. You can always do something to help improve your memory. And everyone’s memory gets better if they use it often enough.
70 If you follow them, you are certain to improve your memory.
A.If you bring what you’ve learned back to your mind, it becomes easier to remember.
B.All of the suggestions are helpful.
C.Discuss with a friend.
D.Write out what you need to remember over and over again.
E.But everyone can improve their memory if they want to.
【答案】66.E 67.D 68.A 69.C 70.B
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,列出了一些如何提高记忆力的建议。
【详解】66.根据“No one remembers everything, and luckily we don’t usually have to.”可知,没有人会记住每件事,因此空处应是引出改善记忆的方法,选项E“But everyone can improve their memory if they want to.但是,如果愿意,每个人都可以改善自己的记忆力。”起到承上启下的作用,引出下文方法。
67.根据“This will help you keep it in mind longer, especially for memorizing formulas or facts.”可知,此处是介绍帮助长久记忆的方法,选项D“Write out what you need to remember over and over again.一遍又一遍地写下你需要记住的东西。”与后文中“This”相呼应。
68.根据“Always review information.”可知,这里讲的是经常回顾信息,选项A“If you bring what you’ve learned back to your mind, it becomes easier to remember.如果你把学到的东西重新回忆起来,它会更容易记住。”对应复习的含义,与后面举例睡前复习想呼应。
69.根据“It is always easier to remember things through discussions.”可知,此处讲的是讨论,选项C“Discuss with a friend.与朋友讨论。”符合语境。
70.根据“If you follow them, you are certain to improve your memory.”可知,此处是总结性的句子,选项B“All of the suggestions are helpful.所有的建议都是有帮助的。”总结全文,符合语境。

B: I really admire Zhong Yang. He is a great seed scientist.
【答案】Who do you really admire

73.A: ________ are there in the world?
B: There are about 7100 languages in the world.
【答案】
How many languages
【详解】答句回答世界上大约有7100种语言,此处询问可数名词数量用How many,后面接名词复数languages。
74.A: ________?
B: I remember the new words according to the pronunciation.
【答案】
How do you remember the new words
【详解】B的回答是“I remember the new words according to the pronunciation.”,其中“according to the pronunciation”表示的是做某事的方式或方法。对方式、方法提问,应使用特殊疑问词How,时态为一般现在时,主语是you,借助助动词do,动词短语为remember the new words。
75.A: You look a bit down. ________?
B: I failed the English exam yesterday. I feel disappointed.
【答案】
What‘s wrong/What‘s the matter/What happened
【详解】对话中A说“你看起来有点低落”,B回答“我昨天英语考试不及格,感到很失望”。根据上下文逻辑,A在观察到B情绪不好后,应该询问对方“怎么了”或“发生什么事了”。英语中询问对方状况或原因的常用口语表达有“What‘s wrong /What‘s the matter /What happened”,均符合语境。
