If our town slept for a year
(Writing Outline)
Imagine that, one day, all human activities in our town stop. Cars sleep in place, factories go silent, and the school gates stay closed.
At first, the silence feels strange. But soon, natural sounds fill the air. The little river behind the market, no longer carrying plastic bags, runs clear again, and fish gather under the old stone bridge like a returning family. In the empty playground, grass pushes through the running track, and a pair of magpies build their nest on the basketball hoop. Streets that are usually full of people remain empty, but they are not lifeless — at night, hedgehogs cross the zebra crossing as if it were their private road.
One year later, when human life returns, what will we see? A town that kept breathing without us. The picture is beautiful, but the lesson behind it is serious: nature does not need us as much as we need it. The best future is not humans OR nature — it is a fine balance, humans WITH nature.
The egrets came back
(Writing Outline)
Grandpa says the river bend behind our village used to be "a white cloud on the water" — hundreds of egrets standing in the shallows like snow. But by the time I was born, the white cloud was gone. The water smelled wrong, the reeds were cut for building, and the egrets found another home, far from us.
The change began three years ago, when the village started cleaning the river. Old Liu, who once fished with poison bait, became the river keeper — his own idea, he says, because "I owe the river a debt." Every morning he patrols the bank, picks up rubbish and stops anyone dumping waste. The village planted new reeds and set up wooden signs. It was hard work with no quick prize, and some people laughed: "Birds don't read signs!" But last November, on a cold golden morning, Grandma rushed into the yard, shouting, "Come! Come quickly!" By the river bend stood seventeen egrets — quiet, elegant, like fallen snow that refused to melt. This spring, there are more than fifty. Old Liu stands on the bank every evening, simply watching, as if greeting returning family.
Standing beside Old Liu, I finally understand our textbook's picture: when humans step back, nature walks forward; when humans make great efforts, nature answers with wings and white clouds. The egrets did not come back for the signs or the reeds alone — they came back for the changed hearts behind them. Getting along with nature is not a slogan to hang on the wall; it is a debt to repay, a habit to keep, and a fine balance to hold — day by day, hand by hand.
