Unit 1 Teenagers today

The paper-cutting girl
(Writing Outline)
Xiao Yu was born into a paper-cutting family in a small northern town. Her grandma's scissors could turn a plain red sheet into flying phoenixes, and little Xiao Yu grew up under those falling red snowflakes.
But at fifteen, she nearly put the scissors away. "Paper-cutting is old-fashioned," her classmates said. "It can't be a future." For a whole winter, the red paper lay untouched. Then one day, she posted a video of her grandma's hands online. To her surprise, the post was flooded with warm answers from all over the world — "This is amazing! Please don't let it disappear!" Many people encouraged her to hold on. Something in her heart woke up: the love for paper-cutting was in her blood.
Now Xiao Yu teaches paper-cutting at her school every Friday, and her classroom is always full. Watching the beginners completely lost in their first red flowers, she often smiles: the scissors are old, but the stories they cut out are always new.
Young shoulders, real responsibilities
(Writing Outline)
When our teacher asked, "Who will introduce our city to the exchange students?" my hand rose before my courage did. For the next month, those five words — "I will do it" — lay on my young shoulders like a stone.
The task was harder than I thought. My English was good on paper but shaky in the air; every practice recording sounded stiff and lifeless. I almost gave up twice. Then I remembered a line from our textbook: the country and its people once faced great difficulties, and youth were called on to shoulder the responsibility and take action. My city's story was small, but it was mine to tell. So I took action: I interviewed my grandpa about the old bridge, collected old photos from neighbours, and rewrote my script eleven times. On presentation day, the exchange students' eyes were glued to the old photos, completely lost in the story of our little bridge that survived three floods.
Walking home that evening, I felt taller — not because I succeeded, but because I had carried something through. Now I understand: responsibilities do not wait until we are grown. Teenagers today have young shoulders, but real responsibilities — and every small duty we carry makes the shoulder stronger. The future is not something we wait for. It is something we practise, five words at a time.
