The old photo on the wall
(Writing Outline)
As a little girl, I often heard about Uncle Lei Feng, but to me, he was just a name on a poster in our school hall — a smiling young man in an old uniform, long before I was born.
Last year, things changed. Our class visited the memorial hall, and I saw his real diary behind the glass. Between the lines, I found no great slogans — only small things, written simply: mending a comrade's sock at midnight, giving away his savings, reading for an old woman on a rainy day. "He always thought of others first," the guide said softly. Standing there, I suddenly understood: heroism is not one giant act far away; it is thousands of small kindnesses repeated every day. Even now, people in his hometown speak of him with great respect, and streets and schools are named after him.
On the bus home, I gave my seat to an old man with a heavy bag — a very small thing. But I felt the poster's smiling young man nod at me. Heroes live forever in our hearts when their small kindnesses live in our hands. From that day on, I have been trying to follow in his footsteps, one small thing at a time.
A hero in an orange vest
(Writing Outline)
For years, the orange-vested cleaner on my street was just part of the morning scenery — like lamp posts and bus stops, always there, never noticed. All that changed one snowy January morning.
I was rushing to school when I saw her kneeling by the drain, digging frozen leaves out with her bare hands. The snow kept falling on her grey hair. "Why not use a tool?" I asked. She smiled, holding up a red fist: "Gloves can't feel the ice. If the drain blocks, the whole street floods by noon." I stood there, watching a woman of my grandma's age guard our street from a flood no one had asked her to think about. Later, I learnt she had cleaned this street for nineteen years. In the flood summer two years ago, she was the one who alerted the whole lane at midnight and helped move the old people upstairs. Her name is Aunt Wang. The whole street speaks of her with great respect.
We often think heroes must be far away, in history books or on the news. But Aunt Wang taught me otherwise: a hero is simply a person who sees a duty that everyone else walks past — and carries it, from morning to night, for years, without asking for a stage. Heroes live forever not because their names are big, but because their care is. Now, every morning when I pass her, I say, "Morning, Aunt Wang!" Small words for a great hero — but I know she hears them.
