I carefully connected the wires as the textbook showed, yet nothing happened. Instead of shining, I suddenly smelt something burnt. I sat back into my chair, with heat quickly rising to my cheeks. I had always been confident and did well in nearly all school subjects. However, this physics experiment taught me an unforgettable lesson. “I messed up too,” Mia, my lab partner, said quietly, showing me her own messy wires (导线). I looked around the classroom and found nearly half of our classmates were facing the same trouble. At that moment, a clear idea hit me: failure is a natural part of physics learning. It is not mistakes themselves that matter, but how we face, check and correct them. Rather than giving up easily, I decided to restart my experiment step by step. I carefully examined every connection and fixed my wrong wiring. When the bulb finally gave out soft, warm light, I was more than just relaxed. I even felt proud through those mistakes, because they guided me to find the right way. This special lesson has greatly influenced my daily life. Whenever I feel nervous before giving a speech or fail in a group project, I keep calm and reflect on what goes wrong. Physics brings me far more than basic knowledge. It has taught me to be resilient (坚韧的). Now, when things go wrong, I no longer choose to run away. I keep curious, patient and brave enough to try once more. I believe we should never fear failure. What we truly need to avoid is letting valuable chances slip away, simply because we are too afraid to have a try. 31. Why did heat quickly rise to the writer’s cheeks? A. The lab was too hot. B. He was afraid of his teacher. C. Something was burning. D. He felt embarrassed about his failure. 32. What did the writer realize after seeing his classmates’ results? A. Teamwork makes things easier. B. Mistakes are common in physics learning. C. Physics is harder than he thought. D. Nobody could finish the experiment. 33. What does the underlined part “reflect on” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Think carefully about. B. Talk freely about. C. Reply quickly to. D. Look forward to. 34. Which of the following can best describe the writer? A. Patient but shy. B. Smart and determined. C. Proud and brave. D. Curious and careless. 35. What’s the writer’s opinion about failure now? A. It is a chance to learn and grow. B. It means we need more patience. C. It often comes from careless mistakes. D. It will stop us from trying new things. C Have you ever noticed that kids seem to learn new things faster than adults? Well, it’s true! It has puzzled people for years. But a new study shows that kids learn new things faster than grown-ups. This happens because of a special chemical (化学物质) in the brain called GABA. It helps the brain remember newly learned things. While other studies have tested GABA levels in children, this study looked at GABA levels before, during, and after learning in kids aged 8 to 11, and compared them to GABA levels in adults aged 18 to 35. Scientists from the US and Germany studied how kids and adults learn by checking their brains. They provided visual (视觉的) training and tested how well people learned. They saw that children’s brains quickly made more GABA while learning, and this extra (额外的) GABA stayed for a while after the learning. But in adults, the levels of GABA did not change at all. This short rise in GABA level protects new memories from being easily lost. “We found that children learned much more rapidly than adults. It agrees with the common idea that children are better at learning new things,” said Dr. Sebastian Frank, one of the scientists from Germany. “Our results also show that GABA plays a key role in helping kids learn faster.” Scientists hope to use these findings to help adults learn better, too. In the future, they may develop a new technology to increase GABA levels in adults’ brains to help them learn faster. It may bring big changes for adult learners! 36. What is GABA? A. A test about memories. B. A new technology for learning. C. A training lesson for kids. D. A special chemical in the brain. 37. What does GABA help the brain do? A. Make good decisions. B. Remember new things. C. Relax with a good sleep. D. Help kids pass the tests. 38. What did the scientists probably do to test how well people learned? A. They played music for them. B. They let them share opinions. C. They showed pictures to them. D. They asked them to write articles. 39. What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about? A. Why the scientists did the study. B. What the scientists found in the study. C. How the scientists did the study. D. What the scientists think of the study results. 40. Why did the writer write the passage? A. To tell adults how to produce more GABA. B. To encourage adults to learn more new things. C. To explain why adults are better at learning than kids. D. To introduce a study on why kids learn faster than adults. D According to the United Nations, about 2.2 billion people around the world still don’t have enough safe drinking water. Some of them live in dry areas and suffer from water shortage every year. Because of this serious problem, many scientists are trying their best to find useful new solutions to get clean fresh water. Professor Omar Yaghi is one of those scientists. He has created a special device (装置). It can collect water directly from the air. Even in very dry places, like hot deserts with little rainfall all year round, it can still work well. In a recent test in Death Valley, one of the hottest and driest places on Earth, the device successfully collected usable water. The secret lies in the special materials inside the device. These materials can catch water vapor from the air, even when the air is very dry. The device then turns the water vapor into clean and safe drinking water. Each device can make up to 1,000 L of water a day. Besides, it consumes very little energy and can work without power. This great advantage makes it fit for areas with no electricity supply. Yaghi’s idea comes from his own childhood experiences. He grew up in a very dry place. People there received fresh water only once every few weeks. These early experiences never left him. They made him realize how valuable water is and inspired him to spend years finding a better way to get it. The device can help people in dry places and natural disaster areas. For example, after typhoons or floods, clean water is often hard to get. This device can provide water quickly in such situations. It brings hope to a lot of people and shows how science can help solve real-world problems. Yaghi believes this small machine will change many lives in the near future. 41. How does the writer begin the text? A. By telling a story. B. By introducing a fact. C. By asking a question. D. By comparing. 42. What does the success of the test in Death Valley show? A. The device works best in hot areas. B. The device needs heat to collect water. C. The device can work in hard conditions. D. The device can turn rain into drinking water. 43. Which of the following can take the place of “consumes” in Paragraph 3? A. Uses. B. Creates. C. Stores. D. Saves. 44. Why does the writer mention Yaghi’s childhood experiences? A. To explain how he became a scientist. B. To introduce his hard life in his childhood. C. To show why he chose the special materials. D. To explain why he wanted to solve water problems. 45. What’s the best title for the text? A. The power of science. B. Water shortage around the world. C. A meaningful invention. D. A serious real-world problem. 第二节(每小题1分,满分5分) E 阅读下面短文,从短文后所给的五个选项中选出能填入短文空白处的最佳选项,使短文通顺、连贯,意思完整。 Reading a great biography (传记) is both enjoyable and helpful.
