On Earth, we use bricks (砖块) to build houses, but what about building things on the moon? We use “lunar bricks”, of course! Scientists at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) have developed “lunar bricks”. They hope to use the bricks to build a research station on the moon.
To make the bricks, the scientists used a lunar soil simulant (模拟月壤). The bricks are more than three times stronger than normal red bricks. They also have special structures, which were used in ancient Chinese buildings. This makes it possible to simply put these bricks together.
Professor Zhou Cheng from HUST said that they had tested five different kinds of simulated lunar soil composition (成分) and used three ways to harden them. In this way they could choose the best materials for making the bricks. “Lunar soil isn’t the same everywhere on the moon,” Zhou said. “For example, one of the kinds tested simulates the lunar soil at the landing site of Chang’e-5, which is mainly basalt (玄武岩).”
The lunar bricks need to be tested well before being used because the moon has an extreme (极端的) environment. Quakes often happen there. And it gets as hot as 180℃ during the day and as cold as -190℃ at night. The lunar bricks have been sent to China’s space station on the “Tianzhou-8” spacecraft. There, scientists carry out tests to see how well the bricks work in space. The first bricks returned to Earth on November 14th, 2025.
24. Which of the following best explains the purpose of developing “lunar bricks”?
A. To study the composition of lunar soil.
B. To build a research station on the moon.
C. To improve the strength of normal red bricks.
25. Which properly shows the strength comparison of lunar bricks and red bricks?
A. B. C.
26. How did scientists find the best materials for making lunar bricks?
A. They learned about lunar soil from scientific reports.
B. They compared different bricks used widely nowadays.
C. They did many tests on simulated lunar soil and treated it in different ways.
27. What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph?
A. The temperature difference on the moon between day and night.
B. The reasons why lunar bricks need to be tested in space.
C. The time when the first lunar bricks returned to Earth.

Amy is a Grade 9 student who is crazy about science and creative inventions. Last month, her school organized a model-rocket invention competition. Hoping to put her creative ideas into practice, Amy made up her mind to join in it with her teammates.
They set up a four-member group. To build their own rocket, they discussed creative plans over and over again. Then they made the model rocket out of paper, light wood and strong glue. After school, they spent plenty of time improving their design every day. There were lots of difficulties along the way. Sometimes the rocket broke into pieces during tests. However, they never lost heart. They analyzed the problems, changed their design and kept trying new ways little by little.
Days passed and they kept making small improvements to their invention. They tested the rocket again and again, learning from each failure. They believed the spirit of exploration would guide them forward.
When the big competition finally came, their self-made rocket shot high up into the sky successfully. It remained flying for 12 seconds, longer than all the other works in the event. Finally, Amy’s team got the first prize.
“Innovation (创新) and teamwork help us turn our ideas into reality. We have learned much through the whole journey,” Amy said proudly. Her story tells us that with the spirit of exploration and continuous efforts, we can always reach for our dreams.
28. Why did Amy want to join the competition?
A. She wanted to turn her creative thoughts into real products.
B. She hoped to win money from the activity.
C. Her teacher forced her to take part in it.
29. What can we learn about Amy’s team?
A. They finished the rocket with expensive modern materials.
B. They worked on their invention after school each day.
C. They invited many experts to help with their project.
30. What did Amy’s team do when their rocket failed in tests?
A. They gave up the project right away
B. They found out causes and improved their design.
C. They chose another new invention to compete
31. What can we infer from Amy’s words?
A. Working together with creative minds helps achieve goals.
B. One person alone can finish an invention without others.
C. Success in invention hardly needs hard-working spirits.
D
Last year, some researchers in Edinburgh built a new AI tool. It soon became a useful helper for fruit farmers.
The AI can work six months before the fruit is ready to pick. Farmers take photos of fruit-tree flowers with their phones, and send the pictures to the AI. The AI looks for the shapes and patterns of flowers in these photos and counts how many flowers there are. More flowers usually mean more fruit later.
The researchers once tested the tool on peach trees in Spain. The AI gave correct flower counts 90 percent of the time. However, when people counted the flowers by hand, they made mistakes 30%-50% of the time.
Professor Cheein works on this project. He talked about how the AI helps real-life farmers. “Many farmers still depend on old ways to guess their harvest (收成). Those ways often lead to big mistakes,” he said. With the AI’s information, farmers know which parts of their farm will grow more fruit. Then they can make better use of water and labor, create less pollution, and get better-tasting fruit. Best of all, farmers do not have to throw away their old farming skills. They can use the AI alongside their usual methods.
This autumn, the team will compare the AI’s guesses with the real peach harvest. If everything goes well, they will try this tool on apple, pear and cherry trees, to help more fruit growers around Europe.
32. What can this new AI tool do for farmers?
A. It picks fruit for farmers.
B. It helps know how much fruit they may get.
C. It waters fruit-tree flowers.
33. What can we learn from the test in Spain?
A. People count flowers more quickly.
B. The AI works much better than people.
C. Peach trees there have very few flowers.
34. What is one advantage of the AI for farmers?
A. They can keep their old farming skills.
B. They must stop their old farming ways.
C. They need not use any water for trees.
35. What will the research team do later?
A. To check whether the AI’s guesses work well.
B. To sell the AI tool to all farmers right now.
C. To plant more peach trees across Europe.

【答案】24. B 25. C 26. C 27. B
