Difficult points: Writing a short passage about one's own opinion on friendship with reasons and examples. III. Teaching Tools Textbook, blackboard, chalk, PPT (optional). IV. Teaching Procedures Step 1 Lead-in (5 mins) Teacher: Greet students. Write Rose's favourite saying on the board: "A true friend reaches for your hand and touches your heart." Ask: "What does this saying mean? Do you have a true friend? What is your friend like?" Let 2-3 students answer. Students: Think and answer the questions. Step 2 Read Rose's post (3a) (12 mins) Teacher: Ask students to read Rose's post silently and answer: "Is Rose's opinion the same as or different from the posts in Section B 1b?" Guide students to find the key sentence: "I don't really care if my friends are similar to or different from me." Then ask students to read again and fill in a simple table about Lily and Lucy on the board. Students: Read the post. Find the answer. Complete the table: Lily: funnier than anyone else, makes Rose laugh, helps her see the silver lining. Lucy: quieter, listens better, always there to listen. Step 3 Discuss opinion (3b) (10 mins) Teacher: Show the table in 3b on PPT or draw it on the board. Explain the three opinions: Friends should be similar / Friends should be different / I don't mind. Ask students to choose one opinion and think of a reason and an example from their own life. Students: Work in pairs. Choose an opinion. Write one reason and one example in the table. Share with the class. Step 4 Write a reply (3c) (13 mins) Teacher: Tell students to use the table from 3b to write a reply to Rose's post. Write the sentence starters on the board: "I think that ... because ... For example, my friend ... is ... When ..." Walk around to help students, especially those who need more support. Students: Write their replies individually. Read their writing to a partner for checking. Step 5 Summary and homework (5 mins) Teacher: Ask 2 students to read their replies to the class. Review the key phrases: make me laugh, see the silver lining, reach for your hand, touch your heart, lend a hand. Homework: finish writing your reply to Rose's post (at least 60 words). Copy the new words and phrases from 3a-3c. Students: Listen and write down the homework. V. Blackboard Design Unit 3 I'm more outgoing than my sister.
