Dear Jack,
I just moved to the Midwest from Florida, and I’m determined to keep running outdoors. I’ve figured out the clothes for my body but still struggle to keep my hands warm on long runs. Do you have any magic method to share? Thank you!
Jeff
Dear Jeff,
Although running outside in the Windy City in the dead of winter may draw looks of concern from your new friends, it truly can be a magical experience. I’ve had the chance to test out many glove combinations in my twenty-two running winters, and here are a few options that have worked well for me.
For runs that are at 32°F (0°C) and warmer, many runners including myself keep their hands with warm traditional running gloves like Agloves, or if you’re on a tight budget, a cheap pair of stretchy synthetic (有弹性的合成的) gloves you can find at your local store.
If the wind reaches 32°F and colder, your extremities are at more risk of getting cold, especially because you’re moving your hands back and forth cutting through the wind. In this case, go with a warmer, thicker glove like the Brooks Vapor Dry, Mountain Hardwear.
In the event of extreme weather, a layering (分层) system will work well. The great thing about this is that you can mix and match with various weights of gloves to see what works for you. You might start with a wool glove liner (衬里) to absorb the wet and cover with thick wool to block the wind, keep you dry, and create a layer of warm air between the two gloves. Lightweight and thick wool gloves with layers might meet your demands for gloves in much lower temperatures in winter.
For those who have bad circulation or enjoy super warm, add a heated hand warmer packet in your gloves and your running partners will wonder what you’re smiling about. It’s funny how a little luxury like heated hand warmers can make your day (or your long run). I used these and a ThermaCare back warmer when I raced the Antarctica Marathon. It was 40 mph winds and snow was over my head. But my hands were smiling the entire time!
Jack

It all began with a stop at a red light.
Kevin Salwen was driving his 14-year-old daughter, Hannah, back from a sleepover in 2006. While waiting at a traffic light, they saw a black Mercedes Coupe on one side and a homeless man begging for food on the other.
“If that man had a less nice car, that man there could have a meal,” Hannah protested. The light changed and they drove on, but Hannah was too young to be reasonable. She pestered (纠缠) her parents about inequity, insisting that she wanted to do something.
“What do you want to do?” her mom responded. “Sell our house?”
Warning! Never suggest a grand gesture to an idealistic teenager. Hannah seized upon the idea of selling the luxurious family home, donating half the proceeds (收入) to charity, while using the other half to buy a more modest replacement home.
Eventually, that’s what the family did. The project — crazy, impetuous (鲁莽的) and also utterly inspiring — is written down in detail in a book by father and daughter scheduled to be published next month: The Power of Half. It’s a book that, frankly, I’d be nervous about leaving around where any young child might find it. An impressionable child reads this, and the next thing you know your family is out on the street.
At a time when so many Americans are struggling, when so many needs are in urgent need and eager to help Hannahs by sending everything from text messages to shoes, the Salwens offer an example of a family that came together to make a difference — for themselves as much as the people they were trying to help. I recently spoke with Kevin Salwen about the project.
A column a week ago described neurological (神经学的) evidence from brain scans (扫描) that unselfishness lights up parts of the brain normally associated with more primary satisfaction. The Salwens’ experience confirms the selfish pleasures of selflessness.
Mr. Salwen and his wife, Joan, had always assumed that their kids would be better off in a bigger house. But after they downsized, there was much less space to retreat to, so the family members spent more time around each other. A smaller house unexpectedly turned out to be a more family-friendly house.
41. What does the underlined word “inequity” most probably mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Unfairness. B. Satisfaction. C. Personal attitude. D. Reasonable suggestion.
42. What is suggested in the underlined sentence “Warning! Never suggest a grand gesture to an idealistic teenager.” in Paragraph 5?
A. Never advise an idealistic child to make a grand gesture.
B. Unless a girl is realistic, never give any promise.
C. Give an immediate answer if the child is reasonable.
D. Don’t respond to a child’s demands without consideration.
43. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The Salwens donated a lot to charity though they weren’t rich.
B. Unselfishness comes from people’s primary satisfaction.
C. Hannah’s parents sold their house at Hannah’s request.
D. The writer’s children asked him to sell the house.
44. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The Salwens regretted selling their house.
B. The family members got much closer.
C. People living in small houses are happy.
D. The Salwens intend to buy another big house.
45. The best title for the passage should be “________”.
A. The Less, the Better B. An Unexpected Satisfaction
C. Something We Can Live Without D. Something Crazy but Inspiring

We all know a picky eater (挑食者) or two, or maybe you’re the picky eater, avoiding food adventures at all costs, because you’re convinced you’ll hate whatever new and bad-looking food is put on your plate. But why is it that some people are picky eaters while others are willing to try pretty much anything that can be eaten?
There’s no single explanation for the picky eating habit, but rather, experts suggest genetics and environments are to blame. Picky eaters are typically unwilling to try new foods, which can be the result of their DNA and upbringing.
Marcia Pelchat, Ph.D., says, “A group in Finland studied what we call food neophobia, which means ‘fear of the new,’ and they found that there’s some genetic basis for this.”
But neophobia can be greatly influenced by your surroundings, too. “If you have parents who don’t really like to try anything new, you’ll also be exposed to fewer new foods.”
People who are less adventurous may be more hesitant to try new foods, as trying anything new, food included, requires you to step outside of your comfort zone. “There’s a thrill-seeking personality trait,” Pelchat says. “It’s been shown, especially with spicy food, that there’s some connection between trying new foods and thrill seeking,” she explains.
Most adult picky eaters start as child picky eaters. “It’s normal for children to go through a picky stage when they’re very young, and that makes sense evolutionarily,” Pelchat says. When our primitive ancestors first tried new foods, they had to be cautious to avoid being poisoned. But as we get older, if we continue to avoid new foods, pickiness can remain.
For those who are simply picky, certain social situations can cause anxiety. “Adult picky eaters have trouble going to business lunches or someone’s house for the weekend,” Pelchat adds.
Your taste can change over time, but to even have a try at being less picky, you have to be committed. “The most common reason for wanting to change is social,” Pelchat says. Expanding your eating horizons can make everything from a date to a vacation easier and more enjoyable.
46. According to experts, the picky eating habit is due to people’s ________.
A. DNA only B. upbringing only
C. DNA and growing environments D. bad dining experiences and personalities
47. If one has food neophobia, he might ________.
A. eat only a few kinds of food B. have trouble trying new foods
C. be addicted to some kind of food D. get poisoned if eating certain foods
48. What can be inferred about picky eating habit?
A. It dates back to the early days of human history.
B. It affects both physical and mental health negatively.
C. It will get more and more serious as one grows.
D. It can cause pickiness in other aspects over time.
49. What do we know about adult picky eaters?
A. They’re often unwelcome in social situations.
B. They behave less picky during business lunches.
C. They all went through a picky stage in childhood.
D. They’re motivated to change often by social purpose.
50. Which can be the best title of the passage?
A. Picky Eaters and Food Adventurers B. Why You’re a Picky Eater
C. The Bad Effects of Pickiness D. How to Change the Picky Eating Habit
D
The word tolerance is widely used in liberal democracies (自由民主制). It indicates a positive meaning. Politicians urge us to be tolerant towards minorities. Educators teach us to be tolerant towards the other. The press is full of references to the need for tolerance when faced with individuals or groups displaying (赞成) a different view or holding a different religious belief. A tolerant society is an objective sought after by anyone who believes in the values of democracy. A tolerant individual is attributed with virtuous (有道德的) qualities.
The question we must ask is whether we have been using the word tolerance fully aware of its meaning and whether we have applied it correctly to reflect what we really wish to convey.
The word tolerance means to bear, or to bear with. If I tolerate something or someone, I basically say that I am ready to bear it or him. I can tolerate a bad smell or a noisy neighbour. The act of tolerance forces me to desist from conveying my objection to the existence of a phenomenon, which I find difficult to bear. A bad smell or a noisy neighbour is considered by me to be an objectionable (令人不快的,反感的) phenomenon. By tolerating either of them, I am not transforming the bad smell or the noisy neighbour into a positive phenomenon. Let’s be honest; I don’t have a different taste when it comes to bad smells. I simply dislike it and wish it disappears. I don’t simplify the noisy neighbour. I would rather have him stop at once the noise he is making so I can live in peace.
To try to remove the bad smell or take reasonable action in order for the noisy neighbour to stop bothering me would most probably not be considered an intolerant act by most people. Now, let’s try to apply the word tolerance in reference to a person who is law-abiding (守法的) and holds a legally acceptable view, which is opposed to my own. Quite frankly, I may decide to tolerate his view. By so doing, I would be attributing to it a negative characteristic. I would apply the same attitude to his view as to the bad smell or noisy neighbour. Thus, to try to take action in order to make his view disappear would be considered an intolerant act. To tolerate his view the way I would a bad smell or a noisy neighbour could hardly be considered virtuous.
The subject tolerating is by nature not equal to the object being tolerated. If I tolerate you, I essentially say that I am above you and am prepared, although unwillingly, to bear with your presence or with your practices or opinions. That may be true in the case of an individual who is ready to tolerate the other. However, this attitude by such an individual, though empirically (经验主义地) true, is hardly a virtue. Certainly, the fact that an individual in reality, may merely tolerate the other or his opinion does not justify a government or any official authority promoting tolerance as a virtue. One cannot tolerate an equal being. True equality involves respect, not tolerance. To respect the other as a distinctive person is hardly to tolerate him. This is the true meaning of social equality: diversity existing in a mutually-respectful society.
The danger with tolerance is that it can lead to the acceptance of individuals or groups bent on destroying the foundations of democratic systems. We have seen such cases with regard to political parties or destructive religious groups that have been treated in a liberal manner under the guise (伪装) of tolerance.
A tolerant attitude involves the grant of a favour, not a right. The question we should ask ourselves is whether we would ever wish a parliament (议会) to make laws according to us, as individuals and as part of a collective entity (实体) or a permission to pursue certain actions interpreted as a favour rather than a right. Indeed, would we ever wish anyone to listen to our views and accept us the way we are simply because he is kind enough to tolerate us?
51. The first two paragraphs are mainly intended to show that ________.
A. tolerance is a symbol of liberal democracies
B. democratic society always advocates tolerance
C. people’s understanding of tolerance is one-sided
D. tolerance can be applied to many situations
52. The underlined part “desist from” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by “________”.
A. deny B. keep C. stop D. dislike
53. The example of a bad smell and a noisy neighbour is used to indicate that ________.
A. the writer failed to put up with them
B. most people find them hard to tolerate
C. the writer isn’t prejudiced against them
D. tolerating them isn’t a virtuous act
54. Which of the following will the writer probably agree with?
A. Too much tolerance will endanger the foundations of democratic systems.
B. By tolerating people can transform something negative into the opposite.
C. People tolerating others are likely to consider them as their equals.
D. Being intolerant should be regarded as a favour.
55. The best title for this passage should be “________”.

Ⅴ.阅读表达(共5个小题,每题2分,共10分)
阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题
I remember doing the household chores to help my mother when I was nine. I hated changing the vacuum cleaner (真空吸尘器)bag and picking up things the machine did not suck up. Twenty years later, in 1978, with this lifelong dislike of the way the machine worked, I decided to make a bagless one.
Easier said than done, of course. I didn't realize that I would spend the next five years perfecting my design, a process that resulted in 5,127 different prototypes (样机).By the time I made my 15th prototype, my third child was born. By 2,627, my wife and I were really counting our pennies. By 3,727, my wife was giving art lessons for some extra cash, and we were getting further and further into debt. These were tough times, but each failure brought me closer to solving the problem.
In the early 1980s, I started trying to get licensing agreements for my technology. The reality was very different, however. The major vacuum makers had built a business model based on the profits from bags and filters (滤网). No one would license my idea, not because it was a bad one, but because it was bad for business. But soon after, the companies that I had talked with started making machines like mine. I had to fight legal battles on both sides of the Atlantic to protect the patents on my vacuum cleaner.
I was still in financial difficulties until 1993, when my bank manager personally persuaded Lloyds Bank to lend me $1 million. Then I was able to go into production. Within two years, the Dyson vacuum cleaner became a best-seller in Britain.
Today, I still embrace risk and the potential for failure as part of the process. Nothing beats the excitement of invention.
56. What drove the author to make a bagless vacuum cleaner? (No more than 10 words)
57. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us? (No more than 10 words)
58. Why did the companies refuse to license the author's technology? (No more than 10 words)
59. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean? (No more than 10 words)

Today I'd like to introduce a book to you which I like much——The Five Thousand Years History, which belongs to history books.
The author selects important and famous figures and events in the history of China, which he organizes and cuts them according to historical materials, and writes in modern language to make them easy to understand.
This book opens a history gate to me and I feel more confident about my own country. I am proud that I am a Chinese and I will make more effort to build a more powerful country and let Chinese history more brilliant.
I think everyone should read it and get this wonderful experience. I do hope you'll like it !Enjoy reading !
