My main reason for coming here was the Human Rights course. When I was at school I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to be a doctor or a lawyer, but having decided to be a lawyer, I then had to choose which first degree I should take before starting law school in another city. I’ve always wanted to help people and I figured that taking Human Rights would allow me to learn about how I can make a real difference in the world.
Vladimir
I love maths. I was torn between two possibilities: I could become an engineer and apply maths at a practical level. Or I could become a maths teacher. I needn’t have worried because in the end I didn’t have to choose! I got everything I wanted thanks to my university, which will qualify me to be a high school teacher while gaining a general engineering degree at the same time.

One of the reasons I chose this university was because of the effort that they put into organising the open day. The lecturers and current students provide an enthusiastic overview (概述) of their courses and of life in the city. This was in contrast to other universities I visited, which just let their reputation do the talking. Although I chose not to live on campus (校园), the rooms there seemed comfortable and very reasonably priced.
Maria
When the time came to select the university, I had three possibilities, but I still could not decide. So it was time to schedule campus tours. They all had their advantages, but this place instantly appealed to me. As soon as I arrived, I was struck by the smiles everyone gave me. What I value most here is the feeling that I am part of a supportive community.

As a child. I never considered myself an athlete at all as I was very uncoordinated However, I did love to run because I felt as if I was flying, but this all changed two years ago when I suffered a knee injury. I was bedridden for two weeks and I had a difficult time moving even short distances. I literally cried myself on my way to the car for a few days.
When therapy wasn’t working well for me, I signed up for a hot yoga class for girls, Bikram Yoga to be exact. Starting a yoga practice was truly a godsend because it helped me gain strength in my knees but, most importantly, yoga helped me attain a more peaceful state of mind, body and spirit.
Since each class was heated to 105 F, every time I set foot in the yoga studio, I’d feel a surge (涌起) of negative thoughts come upon me like a big ocean wave. Some of these thoughts were, in the beginning of my practice, so strong that I walked out of the class several times, However, as the months passed by, I noticed that when I didn’t get swayed away by my negative thoughts, I could stay in the hot room for longer.
After 3-4 months of practicing hot yoga, my arms and legs were beginning to get definition. I also woke up with so much more energy than I had before starting my yoga practice and I gradually started shedding the pounds from my body. Yoga literally made me feel as if I’d taken a shot of energy drink and just gave me that burst that helped my knees heal and made my overall health better.
As I saw some of my classmates do poses that looked appealing to me, I started to think maybe I could do them too. Therefore, yoga helped show me that I have no real limitations physically unless I set those limitations myself through eating junk and thinking in negative limiting terms.
Also, practicing yoga in front of a mirror helped me connect with myself and practicing with a group of people really helped me to feel a greater sense of connection with humanity whereas before I didn’t. Overall, this yoga practice has helped me to see I’m part of a bigger picture in life!

C
Social media can be a powerful communication tool for employees, helping them to collaborate, share ideas and solve problems. Research has shown that 82% of employees think social media can improve work relationships and 60% believe it can support decision-making processes. These beliefs contribute to a majority of workers connecting with colleagues on social media, even during work hours.
Employers typically worry that social media is a productivity killer: more than half of U.S. employers reportedly block access to social media at work. In my research with 277 employees of a healthcare organization I found these concerns to be misguided. Social media doesn’t reduce productivity nearly as much as it kills employee retention (留任率).
In the first part of the study I surveyed the employees about why and how they used platforms like Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. Respondents were then asked about their work behaviors, including whether they felt motivated in their jobs and showed initiative (主动性) at work. I found employees who engage in online social interactions with co-workers through social media blogs tend to be more motivated and come up with innovative ideas. But when employees interact with individuals outside the organization, they are less motivated and show less initiative.
In the second part of the study I found 76% of employees using social media for work took an interest in other organizations they found on social media. When I examined how respondents expressed openness to new careers and employers, I found that they engaged in some key activities including researching new organizations and making new work connections.
These findings present a dilemma for managers: employees using social media at work are more engaged and more productive, but they are also more likely to leave your company. Managers should implement solutions that neutralize the retention risk caused by social media. They can create social media groups in which employees will be more likely to collaborate and less likely to share withdrawal intentions or discussions about external job opportunities. Managers can also use social media to directly reduce turnover intentions, by recognizing employees’ accomplishments and giving visibility to employees’ success stories.
46. What did the author’s own research find about social media?
A. It influences employees’ work negatively. B. It does much harm to employee loyalty.
C. It kills employees’ motivation for work. D. It affects employers’ decision-making.
47. What did the author find in his study about the effect of online social interactions?
A. It differs from employee to employee.
B. It tends to vary with the platform used.
C. It has much to do with whom employees interact with.
D. It is irrelevant to employees’ work performance.
48. What dilemma do managers face regarding social media use?
A. Employees may share confidential company information online.
B. Employees using social media are more engaged but more likely to leave.
C. Social media reduces employees’ productivity during work hours.
D. Employees may spend too much time on social media for personal use.
49. Which of the following best replaces the word “neutralize” in the last paragraph?
A. reduce B. balance C. ignore D. transfer
50. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A. To argue against the use of social media in the workplace.
B. To highlight the benefits and risks of social media for employers.
C. To provide solutions for improving employee productivity.
D. To encourage employers to ban social media at work.
B 47. C 48. B 49. A 50. B
根据第二段中的“In my research with 277 employees of a healthcare organization I found these concerns to be misguided. Social media doesn’t reduce productivity nearly as much as it kills employee retention.(在对一家医疗保健机构的277名员工进行的研究中,我发现这些担忧是被误导的。社交媒体对生产力的降低作用远不如它对员工留任率的破坏作用大。)”可知,作者的研究发现社交媒体对员工忠诚度(留任率)危害极大。故选B项。
【47题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“I found employees who engage in online social interactions with co-workers through social media blogs tend to be more motivated and come up with innovative ideas. But when employees interact with individuals outside the organization, they are less motivated and show less initiative.(我发现,通过社交媒体博客与同事进行在线社交互动的员工往往更有动力,并能提出创新想法。但当员工与组织外部人员互动时,他们的动力会降低,主动性也会减弱。)”可知,在线社交互动的效果与员工互动的对象密切相关。故选C项。
【48题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“These findings present a dilemma for managers: employees using social media at work are more engaged and more productive, but they are also more likely to leave your company.(这些发现给管理者带来了一个两难境地:在工作中使用社交媒体的员工更投入、效率更高,但他们也更有可能离开你的公司。)”
根据最后一段中的“Managers should implement solutions that neutralize the retention risk caused by social media. They can create social media groups in which employees will be more likely to collaborate and less likely to share withdrawal intentions or discussions about external job opportunities. Managers can also use social media to directly reduce turnover intentions, by recognizing employees’ accomplishments and giving visibility to employees’ success stories.(管理者应该实施一些解决方案,以neutralize社交媒体带来的留任风险。他们可以创建社交媒体群组,在这些群组中,员工更有可能进行协作,而不太可能分享离职意向或讨论外部工作机会。管理者还可以通过认可员工的成就、展示员工的成功案例,利用社交媒体直接降低员工的离职意愿。)”可知,后文提到的创建专属群组、认可员工成就等措施,核心目的都是降低社交媒体带来的留任风险,因此“neutralize”意为“降低、抵消”,与“reduce”意思相近。故选A项。
根据第一段中的“Social media can be a powerful communication tool for employees, helping them to collaborate, share ideas and solve problems.(社交媒体对员工来说是一个强大的沟通工具,帮助他们协作、分享想法和解决问题。)”、第二段中的“Social media doesn’t reduce productivity nearly as much as it kills employee retention.(社交媒体对生产力的降低作用远不如它对员工留任率的破坏作用大。)”以及最后一段中“Managers should implement solutions that neutralize the retention risk caused by social media.(管理者应该实施一些解决方案,以抵消社交媒体带来的留任风险。)”
D
I’ve started to hate traveling. When my friends heard me say that, they were all shocked and confused, because I’m an absolute travel fanatic. It’s not that I dislike traveling itself: rather, I dislike the new definition that modern people have given to it, a fundamentally flawed understanding of tourism. What I hate most during every trip is hearing, “This place is perfect for photos, take a few for me.” It seems our travels have become nothing more than check-ins and photo sessions.
Traveling is no longer about admiring scenery, marveling at the magnificent landscapes of our motherland, or experiencing new lifestyles. Instead, I see crowds of people snapping pictures and checking off locations, hardly anyone pausing to genuinely soak in the sights and experiences with their own eyes and hearts. The once poetic journey has transformed into the so-called modern travel trilogy: approach, photograph, leave. The sole purpose of traveling now seems to be posting on social media, showing off to everyone, and immersing oneself in a world constructed solely by one’s own posts. The goal of traveling has shifted to merely visiting check-in spots and completing the task of “checking in”.
Travel has changed, and so have many aspects of our lives. We experience too little genuine joy within. I’ve asked my students why they study, and almost all of them answer that it’s to be admitted into a. good university, seek a good job, and earn a lot of money. I don’t think these are wrong or even unnecessary aspirations, but where is our inner happiness and peace? When will we be able to travel for the sake of traveling, to learn for the sake of learning, to go shopping for the sake of going shopping and to preserve our authenticity? After all, we are human beings. How many of us are living day-to-day, going through the motions, turning life into a chore, a mere existence? We still have “poetry and distant horizons” to pursue. We must strive for what truly defines us as human, or we risk losing our humanity.
51. Which of the following word can best replace the underlined word “fanatic” in paragraph 1?
A. Journalist. B. Psychologist. C. Enthusiast. D. Artist.
52. What is the author’s main reason for hating traveling nowadays?
A. The inconvenience of modern transportation.
B. The increasing cost of traveling.
C. The overcrowding of tourist attractions.
D. The shift in people’s perception of traveling.
53. What is the author’s attitude towards the “modern travel trilogy”?
A. Favorable. B. Disapproving. C. Indifferent. D. Ambiguous.
54. What does the author think about the students’ answers regarding the purpose of studying?
A. They are completely wrong.
B. They are overly materialistic.
C. They show a lack of ambition.
D. They are reasonable but lack a deeper pursuit.
55. What does the author imply in the passage?
A. The author regrets becoming a travel fanatic.
B. Modern society has lost touch with genuine experiences.
C. Traveling is no longer an enjoyable activity.
D. The purpose of traveling has shifted to social media.
C 52. D 53. B 54. D 55. B
划线词句前文“I’ve started to hate traveling. When my friends heard me say that, they were all shocked and confused(我开始讨厌旅行了。当我的朋友们听到我这么说时,他们都很震惊和困惑)”说明朋友对作者讨厌旅行的说法感到震惊和困惑,因为作者非常热爱旅行,从而推知“because I’m an absolute travel fanatic(因为我是一个绝对的旅行fanatic)”中划线词fanatic应为“狂热者,爱好者”的意思,与C项同义。故选C项。
【52题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“It’s not that I dislike traveling itself; rather, I dislike the new definition that modern people have given to it, a fundamentally flawed understanding of tourism.(并不是我不喜欢旅行本身;相反,我不喜欢现代人给它的新定义,这是对旅游业的一种根本错误的理解。)”和第二段“Traveling is no longer about admiring scenery, marveling at the magnificent landscapes of our motherland, or experiencing new lifestyles. Instead, I see crowds of people snapping pictures and checking off locations, hardly anyone pausing to genuinely soak in the sights and experiences with their own eyes and hearts. 【55题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文特别是第二段中“The sole purpose of traveling now seems to be posting on social media, showing off to everyone, and immersing oneself in a world constructed solely by one’s own posts. The goal of traveling has shifted to merely visiting check-in spots and completing the task of ‘checking in’.(现在旅行的唯一目的似乎就是在社交媒体上发帖子,向大家炫耀,让自己沉浸在一个完全由自己的帖子构建的世界里。旅行的目的已经转变为仅仅是参观签到点,完成‘签到’的任务。)”可知,作者以 “旅行变味” 为切入点,进一步拓展到学习、生活等领域,最终提出 “要追求定义人性的真正事物,否则会失去人性”。其真正想表达的,是现代社会中人们普遍忽略了体验的本质,陷入功利化、表面化的行为模式。故选B项。

阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
When Brantley Harrison and her family rescued a tiny, injured squirrel back, then released her back into the wild, they didn’t expect to ever see her again. Nine years later, however, little Bella, they called the squirrel Bella, still comes to visit them almost every day—as long as snacks are provided, of course.
As a baby, the terrible attack made by an owl (猫头鹰) left Bella near death, she was carefully taken in by the Greenville County, South Carolina family, and raised by them alongside three other squirrels named Larry, Curly, and Moe. Bella stayed with the Harrisons until she had healed successfully thanks to a regular diet of fruit, nuts, and baby food, and was ready to jump on the trees in the forest. The sweet squirrel never goes too far from her adopted home, though, and stops by to say hello whenever she can, despite how much time has passed.
“Bella sits right at the front door waiting for someone to notice she has come by for a visit. If no one notices her, she will jump over to the dining room window to wait for someone to see her,” Brantley told The Dodo. The little lady just isn’t ready to part with the family that succored her life. Whenever she stops by, she asks for nothing more than a handful of nuts.
What is the most amazing part? A few years after Bella’s original stay at the Harrison house, she found her way back to them with an injured foot—and a belly full of babies—spending another few months of recovering. “It was truly amazing to watch the baby I raised raise her own babies,” Brantley said. Bella now even has her own Instagram page, where her human family documents her adventures, with almost 4 thousand followers!
56. What happened after little Bella was injured by an owl? (No more than 10 words)
________________
57. How did the Harrisons take care of little Bella? (No more than 15 words)
________________
58. What does the underlined word in the third paragraph mean? (Only 1 word)

58. Saved/rescued
59. An injured foot and a belly full of babies.

根据第二段“As a baby, the terrible attack made by an owl (猫头鹰) left Bella near death, she was carefully taken in by the Greenville County, South Carolina family, and raised by them alongside three other squirrels named Larry, Curly, and Moe.(小时候,一只猫头鹰的可怕袭击使贝拉濒临死亡,她被南卡罗来纳州格林维尔县的一户人家精心收养,和另外三只松鼠——拉里、科利和莫伊——一起抚养长大)”可知,小贝拉被猫头鹰弄伤后它(她)被哈里森一家救了。 It/she was saved/rescued by the Harrisons/family.
根据第二段“Bella stayed with the Harrisons until she had healed successfully thanks to a regular diet of fruit, nuts, and baby food, and was ready to jump on the trees in the forest.(贝拉一直和哈里森一家待在一起,直到她通过定期进食水果、坚果和婴儿食品成功康复,并准备在森林里的树上跳来跳去)”可知,哈里森一家用水果、坚果和婴儿食品喂养它/她。 They fed it/her on regular diet of fruit, nuts and baby food. OR: They provided it/her with a regular diet of fruit, nuts and baby food. OR: By giving/offering it/her a regular diet of fruit, nuts and baby food.
因此“The little lady just isn’t ready to part with the family that succored her life.”
根据最后一段“A few years after Bella’s original stay at the Harrison house, she found her way back to them with an injured foot—and a belly full of babies—spending another few months of recovering.(贝拉最初住在哈里森家几年后,她带着一只受伤的脚和一肚子的孩子回到了他们身边,又花了几个月的时间恢复)”可知,一只脚受伤了,怀孕让贝拉在最初的几年后又回到了哈里森家。 An injured foot and a belly full of babies. OR: Its/her injured foot and coming babies. OR: Its/her injured foot and the babies in her belly. OR: That it was pregnant/had babies on the way and injured (in the foot).
I will do whatever I can to protect animals and live with them in harmony.

Coping Strategies for My Senior Three
As a soon-to-be senior three student at Yaohua High School, I’m well aware that this year will be challenging yet full of opportunities. Here are my strategies to cope with senior three life.
For improving academic performance, I’ll make a detailed study plan. I’ll allocate specific time slots for each subject every day. For instance, I’ll spend more time on weak subjects like math. I plan to do extra exercise and summarize problem-solving methods regularly. Also, I’ll actively participate in class discussions to gain different perspectives and clarify doubts promptly.
To stay fit physically and mentally, I’ll employ the following approaches to keeping my spirits up. No matter how busy I am, I’ll go to bed before 11 o’clock and get up at 6 o’clock to keep a regular routine. Moreover, I’ll set aside 30 minutes each day for physical activities, such as jogging or playing badminton. When feeling stressed, I’ll talk to my friends or parents, or write down my feelings in a journal. Reading some inspiring books during breaks is also a good way to relax my mind.
With these strategies, I believe I can make the most of senior three and achieve my dream of entering a good university.

A
Kazumi
Osvaldo
36. What job has Kazumi made up her mind to do?
A. A doctor. B. A lawyer.
C. A maths teacher. D. A lecturer on Human Rights.
37. Who can obtain a double qualification from his or her university?
A. Kazumi. B. Vladimir. C. Osvaldo. D. Maria.
38. Why did Osvaldo, choose his university?
A. He found the courses affordable.
B. His university sold itself more convincingly.
C. He was won over by the university’s reputation.
D. His university offered excellent accommodation.
39. What do we know about Maria?
A. She takes great interest in community service.
B. She made her choice from the very beginning.
C. She feels a sense of belonging at her university.
D. She was hoping to pass on knowledge to others.
40. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. Choosing your favorite subject B. How to make friends
C. How to choose a community D. Choosing a university
