My teacher's claim that no one would score above 90% shook my confidence. This anxiety was intensified at home, where my father voiced his concerns over my flat SAT progress, a necessity for a celebrated university. The final catalyst for my breakdown was an unexpected rejection from the Regional Red Cross Youth Council. As vice president of my school's chapter, I had never considered this possibility. The Red Cross was my passion and what I relied on to set me apart from other applicants. This rejection made my future seem dim, and I broke like a rubber band stretched beyond its limit. I found my mother, the woman who had sacrificed her own career and life for my opportunities, and poured out my fears. She listened attentively before drawing a circle on the tablecloth. "This is your time," she began. "Eighty percent is schoolwork, ten percent the SAT, and ten percent extracurriculars." She then looked at me with deep emotion and said, "But most importantly, at one hundred percent, is your mental health." "Nothing is more important than your health," she continued. "We want you to have a good job so you'll be less stressed. If this path makes you so unhappy, it isn't worth it. If you're happier flipping hamburgers, so be it." Her insight was a big relief. I realized a rubber band doesn't have to keep stretching. A rubber band that wraps around your hair during the day and is allowed to rest on your nightstand at night won't ever break. Though my routine remained the same — studying hard and pursuing excellence — my perspective was forever changed. The fear of failure lost its power. I am still reaching for the moon, but I am no longer afraid. For I know that if I miss, I will land right in my mother's arms. 24. What does the underlined word "catalyst" in paragraph 2 mean? A. Foundation. B. Solution. C. Symbol. D. Cause. 25. What does the author's mother attach most importance to? A. The author's overall wellbeing. B. The sacrifice for her daughter. C. The relief of the author's stress. D. The author's devotion to schoolwork. 26. What does the use of the "rubber band" try to illustrate? A. A conflict with her father about goals. B. A bond between the author and her mother. C. A shift in the author's outlook on pressure. D. A link to the author's academic performance. 27. What's the best title of the passage? A. Let Go of Perfection: The Only Way to Achieve Academic Success B. The Rubber Band Comparison: A Key to Relieving Academic Pressure C. From Broken to Brave: A Rubber Band's Lesson on Mental Health D. Overcoming Rejection: How IB and SAT Pressures Shaped My Growth C You finish a meal, feel completely full, and then someone opens a box of dessert. A moment ago, your body seemed finished with food. Now, suddenly, dessert sounds possible. We usually think of hunger as the only thing that drives eating. In one sense, that's true. But modern life surrounds us with something that biology did not quite prepare us for: a constant stream of food cues — packaging, bakery windows, delivery photos. A recent study in Appetite studied why we may not be able to avoid overeating when faced with these food cues. For the study, 90 university students rated their current hunger and the desirability of eleven foods and on this basis two foods of equal rating were selected. Halfway through the experiment, they were fed one of the two foods until they no longer wanted more of it. After the meal, participants rated once again and as a result, they rated the food they ate as less desirable and the food showed "devaluation". So far, this sounds like common sense: If you eat enough potato chips, the chips should become less tempting. If you eat enough brownies, brownies should lose some of their magic. The study confirmed that people themselves reported experiencing this. However, when researchers recorded students' reward positivity signal in their brain, the results told a different story. The early brain signal did not shrink when participants saw images of the food they had just stuffed themselves with. The mind can "know" that a food is no longer worth pursuing, but a fast and automatic part of the brain still reacts to its cue as though it carries reward. This study helps explain one of the most frustrating aspects of eating. Overeating is not always a simple failure of willpower. It may begin earlier than that, in the split second when a food cue grabs the brain before deliberate control has had time to catch up. This suggests that self-control may not begin by erasing temptation (诱惑), but by overriding it. The first wave of evaluation may still arrive, but later processes can still step in and say no. Seen this way, self-control is not the absence of desire. It is the ability to outlast a signal that the brain continues to generate. 28. What is the modern challenge of eating? A. Wide availability of food. B. Intense biological hunger. C. Mounting emotional pressure. D. Frequent exposure to food signals. 29. What does the underlined word "devaluation" in paragraph 2 refer to? A. A drop in its market price. B. A growing attraction to people. C. A decline in its original appeal. D. A reduction in its daily supply. 30. What is the purpose of paragraph 3? A. To question the study's findings. B. To introduce a new food experiment. C. To explain the reason behind hunger. D. To reveal the mind-brain contradiction. 31. What can we learn about self-control from the last paragraph? A. It results from the first food evaluation. B. It develops through repeated practice. C. It involves acting against lasting urges. D. It requires getting rid of desire for food. D A new research confirmed that Shakespeare truly boosts children's reading and writing skills and emotional intelligence provided that his works are acted out. "What we've learned is that the techniques actors use have a powerful effect on how children handle language and how they perceive themselves," said Siri Lee of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). The randomized control trial involved hundreds of year 5 pupils — aged nine and ten — at 45 primary schools that had not been "previously exposed to RSC teaching approach." They were split into target and control groups and asked to write, for example, a message in a bottle as Ferdinand after the shipwreck in The Tempest. The target group was given a 30-minute drama-based activity to accompany the passage. The results showed that the target group of pupils drew on a wider vocabulary, used words "classed as more complicated or rarer", and wrote at greater length. They also "appear to be more comfortable writing in role. While control pupils imagine how they themselves would react to being shipwrecked, target children put themselves in the shoes of a literary character and express the character's emotion". The Time to Act study also found that while control pupils relied on "deserted island conventions" such as palm trees, target pupils were "more expansive giving a broader picture of the sky, the sea and the atmospheric conditions." Siri Lee said she had been most surprised by the "emotional literacy that was evident in the target children's writing" and that they were "more resilient in their writing, more hopeful". She added: "The emotional understanding was very evident and it is probably related to the rehearsal room process where you are used to trying to imagine your way through. They were comfortable in describing different emotional states and part of what you do in drama is put yourself in different shoes." The study showed the importance of embedding arts in education, she said. But could the results be replicated with any old dramatist? Siri Lee said more research would be needed but suggested that the grammar school boy's use of 20,000 words, compared with the everyday 2,000 words, gave a "massive expansion of language into children's lives", which was combined with children "using their whole bodies to bring words to life". 32. Why were the pupils divided into two groups? A. To illustrate the popularity of RSC. B. To prove the advantage of acting-out. C. To measure their writing speed. D. To see their understandings of a drama. 33. What did control pupils' reliance on "deserted island conventions" show? A. Their preference for big words. B. Their casual style of writing. C. Their weakness in description. D. Their ignorance of small details. 34. What can be inferred about Shakespeare's use of words? A. It overshadows that of other dramatists. B. It is overly challenging to students. C. It enriches children's daily vocabulary. D. It is definitely scholarship-oriented. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Acting Out Shakespeare: A Stone, Two Birds B. Follow in Shakespeare's Footsteps C. Shakespeare: Language Strugglers' Cure-all D. Shakespeare: Easier Said Than Done 第二节(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 An educated person understands that education is a lifelong journey, not a destination. Being truly educated means more than just having academic qualifications. __36__ Such individuals are literate, culturally aware, well-informed, and composed in their demeanor. First, staying informed about the world is crucial. An educated person follows daily news from a variety of reliable sources at regional, national, and international levels. Reading multiple publications, such as The Guardian or Le Monde, helps provide a balanced view. __37__ However, you must always stay critical and not take everything at face value, noticing the biases in different reports. Beyond current affairs, a truly educated person actively appreciates culture. __38__ Immersing yourself in classic and contemporary literature fosters empathy by portraying diverse human experiences. Reading foundational philosophy provides tools to ponder morality and free will. Exploring diverse films, reading criticism, and listening to various musical genres (体裁) all contribute to a rich, cultured perspective. Taking notes while engaging with these works helps you absorb key ideas. __39__ An educated person listens carefully, contributes selectively, and does not dominate conversations. Humility is key — avoiding bragging (吹嘘) shows genuine respect for others. When you don't understand something, asking questions demonstrates a willingness to learn. A calm and level-headed demeanor is also a hallmark; instead of reacting with anger, an educated person responds calmly and seeks to resolve issues constructively. Ultimately, becoming educated is not about showing off what you know, but about demonstrating a continuous willingness to learn. These habits require consistent effort and genuine curiosity. __40__ A. Listening to news radio is also valuable. B. Besides that, seeking is an important character. C. The truly educated person knows learning never ends. D. It involves actively and consistently broadening your mind. E. Equally important is the ability to engage with others thoughtfully. F. This does not mean that you need to agree with everything you hear. G. Visiting museums and studying art pieces help develop visual literacy. 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 When you spend time with close friends, how do you feel? You may feel like you belong. According to the Oxford dictionary, belonging is defined as a "deep sense of acceptance, inclusion, and identification within a group, place, or context." __41__ Since the beginning of human evolution, people have connected with others in order to survive. This desire to form and grow relationships is rooted in the human brain. __42__ In 1943, Abraham Maslow was the first psychologist to write about belonging as a human need. His theory, the Hierarchy (等级) of Needs, states that humans must acquire their basic needs, such as physiological (生理上的) needs and needs related to safety, before they can begin fulfilling other higher, more complex needs, like belonging or developing self-esteem. Another groundbreaking research about belonging emerged in 1995. Mark Leary and Roy Baumeister found that humans have a universal drive to belong, which motivates their thoughts and actions. In fact, this drive is so important that they argued it was a fundamental human need-not a secondary need in a hierarchy. Their later research explored the connection between self-esteem and belonging. According to their research, self-esteem is not just about how people feel about themselves internally.__43__ Although feeling connected to people is important in many settings, it becomes especially critical in schools. A 2020 research analysis found that students who do not feel a sense of belonging at school are often searching for threats in their environment that signal whether they are welcome or not.__44__ This, in turn, can cause poorer academic performance. It can also discourage students from forming deeper relationships. So, a student's feeling of belonging is vital for their learning. __45__ Researchers will continue to analyze how personality, culture, and even social media shape how connected we feel to others. With this knowledge, people can create schools and communities where more people feel included. That way, we can develop a society that is overall healthier, happier, and more connected. A. They may do things to increase their self-esteem. B. This stress can use up cognitive resources needed for learning. C. Belonging is a complex thing because it is influenced by many factors. D. Over the years, researchers have been exploring this subjective feeling. E. Feeling like you belong can actually improve many aspects of your life. F. It actually serves as a warning signal that measures how much people feel accepted. G. When you see yourself well suited to a specific environment, you feel valued and respected. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 I must admit, I haven't always been a lover of animals. As a freshman, I found the faster pace and heavier workload overwhelming. Learning to balance my schedule and rise to challenges became my priority, which greatly improved my efficiency. While building connections is vital for making friends, it shouldn't come at the expense of studies. Good study habits lay a solid foundation for high school life. If we fall behind academically, our confidence may suffer too. The primary goal of high school is to acquire knowledge and prepare for higher education. Therefore, I suggest your column offer practical tips on time management and stress relief to help us adapt better. Yours, Li Hua 范文二:选择Building connections(建立人际联系) Dear editors of Focus, I recommend "Building connections" as the theme. As a freshman, I felt extremely lonely and homesick at first. However, by actively joining the calligraphy club and talking with classmates, I built strong friendships. This sense of belonging reduced my stress and motivated me to study harder. While academic adaptation is crucial, focusing solely on textbooks can lead to isolation. Good relationships provide emotional support when facing challenges. Moreover, many academic problems can be solved through peer discussions. A well-connected student is more likely to keep a positive attitude and achieve all-round growth. Therefore, I suggest your column share tips on breaking the ice and participating in club activities. Yours, Li Hua 第 1 页 共 13 页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
