Here are four student podcasts that show the minds of students and what they have to say about climate-related news in their communities — and what they hope to do about it. Behind the Scenes of the Mosquito Fire A sixth-grade class at the Georgetown School of Innovation in Georgetown, Calif., shares stories from the devastating (毁灭性的) Mosquito Fire in 2022. This group of eight students asks two firefighters what it’s like to fight fires and protect loved ones in their hometown. Fires: Set Ablaze At Chautauqua Elementary, the Vashon fifth-graders talk about the far-reaching and lasting impact of wildfires and wildfire smoke — and the direct effects on their lives, like waiting for the school bus on a smoky day. The students also interview experts and share their research on wildfire precautions (防范). Flowing Through Time In this podcast from Peak Academy, a group of eight middle schoolers reports on dealing with water shortages in Bozeman, Montana. They track the history of their growing hometown’s water supply, which has been dependent on mountain snowmelt. As that source becomes less reliable in a warming world, the students turn to the grown-ups to ask what they can do to conserve water. Washed Away The deadly flooding in eastern Kentucky last year forever changed the lives of high schoolers Ryley Bowman, Carolina Johnson and Hunter Noble. The three classmates at Morgan County High School in West Liberty, Ky., share firsthand accounts of their own and their family’s experiences during the floods. 21. Which podcast will be attractive if you are interested in firefighters’ experience? A. Washed Away. B. Fires: set Ablaze. C. Flowing Through Time. D. Behind the Scenes of the Mosquito Fire. 22. What do high schoolers share in their podcast? A. Their personal experience. B. The history of water supply. C. An interview with experts. D. Methods of saving water. 23. What is the purpose of the text? A. To inspire us to make more podcasts. B. To solve the problem of climate change. C. To introduce students’ podcasts about climate. D. To encourage us to do more for the community. B Valerie L. Thomas is an African American scientist and inventor best known for her patented (专利的) illusion transmitter (幻觉发射器) and contributions to NASA research. Thomas was born in 1943 in Maryland. She was interested in science as a child. At the age of eight, her curiosity about how things worked inspired her to borrow a book called The Boy’s First Book of Radio and Electronics, which she took home hoping her father would help her take on some projects in it. However, he didn’t help her. She attended an all-girls high school that did not help her with hands on projects either. But this changed in college, when Thomas was admitted to Morgan State University as one of the only two women in her class to major in physics. Thomas excelled in her studies. She graduated with excellent results and accepted a position as a data analyst at NASA. In the 1970s, she managed the development of the image-processing systems for Landsat, the first satellite (人造卫星) to send images to the Earth from space. In 1980, Thomas received a patent for an illusion transmitter. The device produces optical illusion images by means of two concave mirrors (凹面镜). Unlike flat mirrors, which produce images that appear to be inside, or behind the mirror, concave mirrors create images that appear to be real, or in front of the mirror itself. This technology was later used by NASA and has since been adapted for use in surgery (外科手术) as well as the production of television and video screens. Thomas continued to work for NASA until her retirement in 1995. Over the course of her career, Thomas contributed widely to the study of space. She helped develop computer program designs that supported research on Halley’s Comet, the ozone layer, and satellite technology. For her achievements, Thomas received a number of NASA awards including the Goddard Space Flight Center Award of Merit and the NASA Equal Opportunity Medal. 24. What do we know about Thomas’ early life? A. She was talented in science. B. She liked working with her father. C. She lacked support for her interest. D. She preferred to read boys’ books. 25. What does the underlined phrase “excelled in” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Did well in. B. Had confidence in. C. Was curious about. D. Was concerned with. 26. What is the advantage of Thomas’ invention over flat mirrors? A. It takes pictures more clearly. B. It transmits images more quickly. C. It changes the position of the image. D. It can send images to the Earth from space. 27. What does the last paragraph focus on? A. Thomas’ future plans. B. Thomas’ retirement life. C. Thomas’ research theory. D. Thomas’ lifetime achievements. C Researchers recently studied 3,000 middle school students. Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work of these “fly-in, fly-out” parents might influence the health of their children. A higher percentage (比例) of teenagers who experienced the long work absence of a parent had emotional (情感的) or behavioral problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research finding high percentages of emotional problems in teenagers who often returned to an empty house after school or whose parents were seldom at dinner. Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time to be present in their children’s lives, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted (盆栽的) plant. Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. They enjoy one another’s company (陪伴) without the need to talk. In fact, many years of research suggest that children use their parents as a safe base from which to explore the world. Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents’ movements from room to room, even while carrying on with their own activities. Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom. A new school year is at hand, so as parents we could offer our teenagers a “potted flower” as a gift, whose quiet and steady (稳定的) presence will give them a great day. 28. What did the study find about the 618 teens? A. They had more dinners with their parents. B. They were more prepared to help themselves. C. They were more likely to have trouble with their feelings. D. They showed more dislike for traditional working hours. 29. What is the author’s attitude to her friend’s practice? A. She doubts it. B. She supports it. C. She is worried about it. D. She cares little about it. 30. What does earlier research say about young kids according to paragraph 4? A. They prefer to play with babies. B. They want more freedom (自由) from parents. C. They pay attention to parents’ behavior. D. They show more interest in new activities. 31. What is the best title for the text? A. Teens want potted plant parents B. Your kids still need conversation C. Quiet families raise healthier teenagers D. Parents know little about today’s teenagers D In a 2012 study, Boaz Keysar, a professor at the University of Chicago in the US, led an experiment on the relationship between foreign languages and people’s way of thinking. In the experiment, people were asked to make a choice: Just take one pound or take a 50percent chance of winning 2.50 pounds. When given this choice in their native language, most people took the safe option of only getting one pound. But they were more willing to make the riskier choice when asked in a foreign language, leading to more profits overall, according to The Guardian. As Keysar put it, “People just hate the chance of losing, but they hate it less in a foreign language.” In another study published this year, Keysar and his team did an experiment in which participants were given a series of related words like “dream”, “snooze”, “bed” and “rest”. Later, when asked which words they remembered hearing, people were more likely to mistakenly remember “sleep”, which was not on the list, in their native language. But it was much less likely to happen if they did the test in a foreign language. As Keysar explained, people have more careful thinking when using a foreign language, leading to more accurate memories. The foreign language effect may even influence our personality. Silvia Purpuri at the University of Trento, Italy, looked at people’s willingness to face uncertainty and enter unfamiliar situations. Being tolerant (宽容的) of uncertainty allows people to have more creative ideas and be more open to new things. It turns out that people naturally score more highly on this trait (特点) when they can speak or use a foreign language because speaking a foreign language requires taking risks. The evidence is clear: By learning a foreign language, you’re not just learning a language—you’re gaining a new state of mind. 32. What does the first experiment suggest? A. People like expressing in a foreign language. B. People are afraid of losing in face of money. C. People make quick choices in their native language. D. People prefer riskier decisions in a foreign language. 33. Which of the following best explains “accurate” underlined in paragraph 3? A. Colorful. B. Simple. C. Usual. D. Exact. 34. Willingness to face uncertainty makes people . A. Cool-headed. B. Open-minded. C. Light-hearted. D. Easy-going. 35. What is the main idea of this text? A. Learning foreign languages helps a lot. B. People should learn to face uncertainty. C. Foreign languages influence how people think. D. Personality has an effect on language learning. How to Appear Outgoing in a Conversation? Your teacher called me today and told me you’ve been ignoring her homework!” she shouted angrily. Minutes later, they began eating dinner in silence. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Bonnie answered the door to see a man standing outside. It turned out to be Mr. Henderson, a famous New York-based cartoonist. He explained to Amy he received a letter with some pieces of her artwork and was so impressed with her talent. In fact, he wrote Amy letters, but never got an answer. Then, Amy realized that her grandmother kept them hidden from her. “I’m here with an offer for Amy,” Mr. Henderson continued. “We are accepting applications for our arts training program this summer. I would personally teach the students the art of cartoons. For that, Amy needs to pass a test, and then she’ll have to spend her summer in New York learning under me. If everything goes well, she will be able to join my team later and seek her dream of art.” “Really?!” Amy was so excited. But Bonnie refused because she promised Amy’s late parents to raise her an educated person. Mr. Henderson sighed and pulled out a file from his bag, “It’s a test. W: I almost had a complete disaster yesterday, but I just missed it. I went to the gym around noon and worked out for an hour. When I stopped by the bakery to pick up some bread for dinner, I discovered I didn’t have my wallet with me. I went home, but it wasn’t there, either. Then I remembered I had had it with me on the golf course the day before. I had two hundred dollars in it, my Visa card, and my driver’s license. I decided to go back to the golf course and try to get my wallet back. I needed to fill up the car with gas to the course, but luckily, I had a bank card at home. When I finally got there, I asked around the changing room, but no one had seen it. Then I asked the people in the restaurant and they didn’t have it, either. My last chance was the kids outside who wash the golf carts. And they told me one of workers found it when he was cutting the grass in the morning. I offered to treat the guy to a round of golf, but he said he plays there for free, anyway. Finally, he said if I came back, I could buy him a beer. I told him he had a deal. A More than 100 podcasts (播客) this year in NPR’s Student Podcast Challenge have touched on a topic that’s increasingly important to young people: climate change. 21. D 22. A 23. C 25. A 26. C 27. 根据第二段“At the age of eight, her curiosity about how things worked inspired her to borrow a book called The Boy’s First Book of Radio and Electronics, which she took home hoping her father would help her take on some projects in it. However, he didn’t help her. (八岁时,她对事物是如何运作的好奇促使她借了一本名为《男孩的第一本无线电》的书,她把这本书带回家,希望父亲能帮助她完成其中的一些项目。然而,他没有帮助她)”以及第三段“She attended an all-girls high school that did not help her with hands on projects either.(她就读于一所女子高中,这所学校在项目上也没有帮助她)”可知,瓦莱丽·L·托马斯在早期生活中缺乏别人对她的兴趣的支持,故选C项。 根据下文“She graduated with excellent results and accepted a position as a data analyst at NASA.(她以优异的成绩毕业,并接受了美国国家航空航天局数据分析师的职位)”可推知,划线词组的含义应为“表现良好”含义。故选A项。 根据第四段“Unlike flat mirrors, which produce images that appear to be inside, or behind the mirror, concave mirrors create images that appear to be real, or in front of the mirror itself.(与平面镜不同的是,平面镜产生的图像看起来像是在镜子内部或后面,凹面镜生成的图像看起来是真实的,或在镜子本身前面)”可知,托马斯的发明相对于平面镜的优点是它改变了图像的位置。 根据最后一段“For her achievements, Thomas received a number of NASA awards including the Goddard Space Flight Center Award of Merit and the NASA Equal Opportunity Medal.(由于她的成就,托马斯获得了美国宇航局的多项奖项,包括戈达德太空飞行中心功绩奖和美国宇航局机会均等奖章)”可知,最后一段主要讲的是托马斯一生的成就。故选D项。 C Researchers recently studied 3,000 middle school students. Parents know little about today’s teenagers 【答案】28. C 29. B 30. C 31. 根据第二段中“A higher percentage (比例) of teenagers who experienced the long work absence of a parent had emotional(情感的) or behavioral problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours. (与那些父母工作时间更传统的青少年相比,经历父母长时间不在的青少年有情绪或行为问题的比例更高)”可知,关于这618名青少年,研究发现了他们更有可能在感情上有麻烦。故选C。 【29题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. They enjoy one another’s company (陪伴) without the need to talk. (我的一个朋友每天晚上在客厅里静静地做家务,她的孩子们在那里看电视。他们喜欢彼此的陪伴,不需要说话)”和第四段的“Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents’ movements from room to room, even while carrying on with their own activities. Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom.(研究告诉我们,年幼的孩子安静地跟随父母的动作,从一个房间到另一个房间,即使在进行自己的活动。也许我们的青少年就像婴儿一样,当父母还在身边的时候,他们会感到最自在。他们不想远离给他们自由的父母)”可推知,作者支持她两个朋友的做法,孩子们喜欢父母陪伴着自己做事情。故选B。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“In fact, many years of research suggest that children use their parents as a safe base from which to explore the world. Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents’ movements from room to room, even while carrying on with their own activities. Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom. (事实上,多年的研究表明,孩子们把父母作为探索世界的安全基地。研究告诉我们,年幼的孩子安静地跟随父母的动作,从一个房间到另一个房间,即使在进行自己的活动。也许我们的青少年就像婴儿一样,当父母还在身边的时候,他们会感到最自在。他们不想远离给他们自由的父母)”可知,关于小孩子的早期研究表明了他们关注父母的行为。故选C。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第二段“A higher percentage (比例) of teenagers who experienced the long work absence of a parent had emotional (情感的) or behavioral problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours. (与那些父母工作时间更传统的青少年相比,经历父母长时间不在的青少年有情绪或行为问题的比例更高)”和第三段“Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time to be present in their children’s lives, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted (盆栽的) plant. A。 D In a 2012 study, Boaz Keysar, a professor at the University of Chicago in the US, led an experiment on the relationship between foreign languages and people’s way of thinking. D 33. D 34. B 35. 根据文章第二段“As Keysar put it, “People just hate the chance of losing, but they hate it less in a foreign language.” (正如Keysar所说,“人们只是讨厌失败的可能性,但在外语中他们就不那么讨厌了。”)”可知,人们在外语环境下更愿意冒险。故选D。 【33题详解】 词义猜测题。根据划线处前“As Keysar explained, people have more careful thinking when using a foreign language, (正如Keysar解释的那样,人们在使用外语时会更仔细地思考)”可知,人们在使用外语时思考会更加仔细,因此也就会有更加准确的记忆。 根据第四段中“Being tolerant (宽容的) of uncertainty allows people to have more creative ideas and be more open to new things. (对不确定性的宽容可以让人们有更多的创意,对新事物更开放。)”可知,乐意接受不确定性会使人们有更多创造性的想法,也更愿意接受新事物,也就是使人思维更加开放。故选B。 【35题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“In a 2012 study, Boaz Keysar, a professor at the University of Chicago in the US, led an experiment on the relationship between foreign languages and people’s way of thinking. (在2012年的一项研究中,美国芝加哥大学教授Boaz Keysar领导了一项关于外语与人们思维方式之间关系的实验。)”并结合全文可知,本文研究了外语对人们思维方式的影响。故选C。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Appear Outgoing in a Conversation? Some people seem naturally outgoing when chatting with others, while others find it hard to make it. Here are some tips to help you appear outgoing in a conversation. Make eye contact. If you’re in a social situation, such as at a party, try to make eye contact with the other people there. Once you’ve established eye contact, give the other person a friendly smile ___36___ If the person does not respond or does not expect to be approached, let them go their way. Part of being outgoing is knowing when and where to approach others and when to keep to yourself. Ask some open-ended questions. ___37___ It’s easier to start up a chat with someone new if you invite them to share about themselves. If you’ve already exchanged eye contact and smiles with someone, and you’re close by, start off with a question. Here are some ideas: How do you like that book or magazine? What is your favorite thing to do around here? ___38___ You might see some of the same people every day, but never acknowledge (致意) them. To become outgoing, it is important to start acknowledging the people around you more often. The next time you order a coffee or check out at the grocery store, smile at the person helping you and say “thank you”. This small act will help you become more comfortable interacting with others. ___39___ Talk to everyone. After you become a bit more comfortable talking to people you know, try talking to new people as you go through your day. ___40___ But the more you approach people and get comfortable with making conversation, the easier it will become. A. These questions invite others to respond with more than a “yes” or “no”. B. If the person smiles back at you, then go over to them. C. Remember that they serve hundreds of people a day. D. Say thank you in public as much as possible. E. It will probably make the other person’s day a little brighter. F. Keep in mind that this approach doesn’t always work well in some situations. G. At first, you might feel uncomfortable talking with strangers. B 37. A 38. D 39. E 40. 【36题详解】 上文“Once you’ve established eye contact, give the other person a friendly smile.(一旦你们建立了眼神交流,给对方一个友好的微笑。)”提到了给对方一个友好的微笑,B项中的smiles back是关键词,与上文的a friendly smile呼应,同时与下文“If the person does not respond or does not expect to be approached, let them go their way.(如果这个人没有回应或者不希望被接近,就让他们走自己的路吧。)”构成对比关系,所以B选项“If the person smiles back at you, then go over to them.(如果那个人回你一个微笑,那就走过去。)” 提到了问问题,A项中questions是关键词,与上文呼应,进一步阐述开放式问题,所以A选项“These questions invite others to respond with more than a “yes” or “no”.(这些问题要求别人的回答不仅仅是‘是’或‘不是’)。” 故选A。 【38题详解】 下文“You might see some of the same people every day, but never acknowledge (致意) them.(你可能每天都见到同样的一些人,但从不向他们致意。)”和“The next time you order a coffee or check out at the grocery store, smile at the person helping you and say ‘thank you’.(下次你点咖啡或在杂货店结账时,微笑着对帮助你的人说‘谢谢’。)”提到了向周边的人致意和表达感谢,D项中thank you是关键词,与下文的acknowledge和thank you呼应,所以D选项“Say thank you in public as much as possible.(尽可能在公共场合说谢谢。)” 【39题详解】 上文“This small act will help you become more comfortable interacting with others.(这个小小的举动将帮助你在与他人交往时变得更加自如。)”提到了向身边的人表达感谢的益处,E项中It是关键词,指代上文的This small act,所以E选项“It will probably make the other person’s day a little brighter.(这可能会让对方的一天变得更美好。)” 【40题详解】 上文“After you become a bit more comfortable talking to people you know, try talking to new people as you go through your day.(当你和你认识的人交谈变得更加自如之后,在你的一天中试着和新的人交谈。)”提到了尝试去和新人交谈,空处和下文“But the more you approach people and get comfortable with making conversation, the easier it will become.(但是,你接触的人越多,越能自如地交谈,就会变得越容易。)”是转折关系,故空处是说一开始和陌生人交谈不太自如的情况,G项中strangers是关键词,与上文new people呼应,所以G选项“At first, you might feel uncomfortable talking with strangers.(一开始,你可能会觉得和陌生人说话不舒服。)” Whether it is a relaxing walk or a power one, taking a walk usually only lasts a small duration of time. I know your Granny is against it, kid. But if you manage to finish it and hand it over to me by 10 a.m. the day after tomorrow, I can take it to my manager,” he added. Amy was so heartbroken and angry that she couldn’t help but yell at her grandmother. “I hate you, Granny!” she yelled through her tears and then rushed out of the house. She could hear Bonnie calling after her, but she didn’t stop. Amy ran down the street and stopped by a shop, where her parents bought her drawing tools for the first time and encouraged her to study hard as well as draw well. A while later, she wiped her tear-stained cheeks and returned home with a determined heart. Entering the house, Amy found Bonnie holding her drawing tools, crying. Amy apologized to her grandmother and promised to study hard in the future and never let her down or get angry again. Bonnie also said she was sorry to Amy for not living up to her parents’ expectations. She encouraged Amy to paint well and try to qualify for the painting course. Amy stayed up all night, trying to make her art perfect, and in the end, she did have a drawing she really liked.
