A travel guidebook B One of the most stressful days of Susan McFrederick’s life was watching her son get wheeled away for surgery hours after he was born in 2011. But after the operation, Susan burst into tears for a different reason: across the cut on their newborn son's back was a sweet winter scene, hand-drawn on his bandages(绷带). “There were rolling hills of snow, a pine tree and a snowman with a hat and broom,” she recalled. “It was extremely touching and comforting to know that somebody had taken the time to do that for my family. It was a moment I'll never forget.” Susan soon learned the artist was her son’s surgeon, Robert Parry, who discovered another way to use his hands in the mid-1980s during his internship(实习期) at a children's medical center, where he saw one of his colleagues cut out heart and shark shapes to decorate children's bandages. “My first reaction was, What is he doing? Hey, that’s kind of neat,’” Parry recalled. “I especially liked the reactions of the parents and the patients when they saw his artwork. The smiles took everyone’s attention from the surgery. Then I decided to follow suit.” Parry quickly graduated from his early hearts and sharks, and started to surprise families with drawings that captured young patients’personalities. From Snoopy to Spider-Man and bears to butterflies, there isn’t much he hasn’t drawn. Most kids want superheroes, sports team logos or princesses, while babies often receive scenes with flowers, trees and sea creatures. During the last 30 years, Parry estimates he has left examples of his handiwork over the stitches (伤口缝线)of more than 10,000 children. “During a time of stress for families, it’s nice to be able to help them smile and laugh,” Parry said. “This is something positive that I can do for them, which is what I like most about it.” For Parry, the reward is knowing he hopefully made a difference in a child’s life, and except for his drawings on bandages, “they can go on and live their lives and never know I was in it,”he said. He’s not ready to retire, but he’s found a new hobby to keep his hands skillful in the years to come. “I’ve taken up knitting(编织),” Parry said. “Hats, sweaters, gloves — I enjoy it all. But mostly, I enjoy giving everything away.” 41. Susan burst into tears after her baby's operation because she was__________ . A. moved B. amused C. stressed D. heartbroken 42. How did Parry get the idea of decorating children's bandages? A. He was motivated by his patients. B. He was inspired by his colleague. C. He was required to learn the skill during his internship. D. He was encouraged by Susan to show his genius for art. 43. Parry's artworks during the last 30 years show that he ___. A. devoted himself more to art than to medicine B. knew more about his patients than their parents C. took into consideration the tastes of individual patients D. created a large number of works beyond his expectations 44. What does Parry expect to achieve with his artworks? A. To get a reward from the artistic circle. B. To win the admiration of his colleagues. C. To make a difference in his dull medical career. D. To lift the spirits of his patients and their parents. 45. What can we learn about Parry from the last two paragraphs of the passage? A. He is eager to show others his new skills. B. He enjoys trying new ways to help others. C. He is looking forward to life after retirement. D. He is more interested in knitting than drawing. C In recent years, a growing body of research has shown that our appetite and food intake are influenced by a large number of factors besides our biological need for energy, including our eating environment and our perception(感知) of the food in front of us. Studies have shown, for instance, that eating in front of the TV (or a similar distraction) can increase both hunger and the amount of food consumed. Even simple visual clues, like plate size and lighting, have been shown to affect portion size and consumption. A new study suggested that our short-term memory also may play a role in appetite. Several hours after a meal, people’s hunger levels were predicted not by how much they’d eaten but rather by how much food they’d seen in front of them—in other words, how much they remembered eating. This disparity (新旧研究的差异)suggests the memory of our previous meal may have a bigger influence on our appetite than the actual size of the meal, says Jeffrey M. Brunstrom, a professor of experimental psychology at the University of Bristol. “Hunger isn’t controlled individually by the physical characteristics of a recent meal. We have identified an independent role for memory for that meal,” Brunstrom says. “This shows that the relationship between hunger and food intake is more complex than we thought.” These findings echo earlier research that suggests our perception of food can sometimes trick our body’s response to the food itself. In a 2011 study, for instance, people who drank the same 380-calorie milkshake on two separate occasions produced different levels of hunger-related hormones (荷尔蒙),depending on whether the shake’s label said it contained 620 or 140 calories. Moreover, the participants reported feeling more full when they thought they'd consumed a higher-calorie shake. What does this mean for our eating habits? Although it hardly seems practical to trick ourselves into eating less, the new findings do highlight the benefits of focusing on our food and avoiding TV and multitasking while eating. The so-called mindful-eating strategies can fight distractions and help us control our appetite, Brunstrom says. 46. What is said to be a factor affecting our appetite and food intake? A. How we feel the food we eat. B. When we eat our meals. C. What element the food contains. D. How fast we eat our meals. 47. What would happen at meal time if you remembered eating a lot in the previous meal? A. You would probably be more particular about food. B. You would not feel like eating the same food. C. You would have a good appetite. D. You would not feel so hungry. 48. What do we learn from the 2011 study? A. Food labels may mislead consumers in their purchases. B. Food labels may influence our body’s response to food. C. Hunger levels depend on one's consumption of calories. D. People tend to take in a lot more calories than necessary. 49. What does Brunstrom suggest we do to control our appetite? A. Trick ourselves into eating less. B. Choose food with fewer calories. C. Concentrate on food while eating. D. Pick dishes of the right size. 50. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Eating distractions often affect our food digestion. B. Psychological factors influence our hunger levels. C. Our food intake is determined by our biological needs. D. Good eating habits will contribute to our health. D Having a rival (对手) can keep you committed to achieving your goals and enhance your overall performance. But before you go out and find an entrepreneur (创业者) to outcompete(胜出), it’s important to understand and avoid the traps that often come with rivalry. After all, competitive rivalry can also make it difficult for you to make a decision and increase your willingness to take risks, behaviors that can ultimately hurt your venture’s (风险项目) success. Finding someone you’re committed to outcompeting can be a great way to stay focused on your goals and push your venture to the next level. But when you’re intently focused on outperforming your rivals, you may begin to develop a “win-at-all-costs” mentality (心态) that causes you to ignore how you achieve success. One group of researchers, for example, examined the link between rivalry and unethical(不道德的) behavior. They found that when people compete against their rivals, they are more willing to behave unethically to win. But such behavior may damage your reputation and strain(使……紧张) relationships important to your success. One way to avoid this trap is to stop and reflect on what’s important. While outperforming your rivals may provide short-term benefits, the loss of your integrity(正直) will have long-term consequences. One reason having a rival can enhance your venture’s performance is that it creates a level of excitement that drives you to work harder. But this eagerness to win may also hurt your venture’s success, particularly when it causes you to make impulsive, insensible decisions. But it’s possible to avoid such costly mistakes by making a habit of engaging in critical thinking, such as considering opposing viewpoints and conducting cost-benefit analyses, especially for those decisions that are complex and can determine the future of your venture. The sense of eagerness that comes with having a rival can not only cause you to make poorer decisions, but it can also lead you to take greater risks that put your venture in great dangers. One way you can overcome the risk-inducing (诱发) effects of rivalry that stand to endanger your venture’s success is to remain attentive to your emotional state and actively monitor how such feelings are affecting your decision-making. 51. How can competitive rivalry benefit entrepreneurs according to the passage? A. By enabling them to outcompete other entrepreneurs. B. By enabling them to make their venture a success. C. By helping them to reach long-term goals. D. By helping them to stay goal-oriented. 52. What is one of the traps entrepreneurs may often fall into when competing with rivals? A. They may adopt strategies that are bound to ruin their venture. B. They may depend on unethical means to outperform their rivals. C. They may be too eager to succeed while ignoring the huge labor cost. D. They may be intently focused on winning at the current market level. 53. What are entrepreneurs advised to do to avoid traps that often accompany rivalry? A. Think very carefully about what really matters. B. Prioritize obtaining immediate benefits. C. Estimate the long-term consequences. D. Reflect on what successes are achievable. 54. How can entrepreneurs avoid making impulsive and insensible decisions? A. By engaging themselves in critical reasoning. B. By developing a habit of keeping their integrity. C. By criticizing themselves for previous poor performances. D. By stopping themselves from being too excited about their successes. 55. How can entrepreneurs overcome the risk-inducing effects of rivalry? A. By paying close attention to their current performance. B. By taking steps that stand to endanger their rivals’ success. C. By monitoring how their decision-making impacts their mentality. D. By keeping their emotions in check to avoid making poor decisions. 第四节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) Kobe Bryant wasn’t the first NBA player to visit China. But he was the first player to help China grow into a basketball-crazed nation. Kobe’s first visit was in 1998, and in conducting basketball clinics (篮球训练营), doing business and participating in charity, he was warmly welcomed in the basketball-loving country. Once, nearly 15,000 people showed up at 9 am for an event at which Kobe was scheduled to appear at 4 pm. USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo saw firsthand Kobe’s popularity during Kobe's time with Team USA at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when as captain he led the team to a gold medal. There were tens of thousands of people on the streets, yelling, 'Kobe! Kobe!' It was unbelievable, just unbelievable," Colangelo said. “It's harder for me to walk around here than in the United States, ” Kobe once told reporters in China in 2013. “It's uncontrollable.
