This year is special for China’s world of math. It’s all because of one great woman—Wang Hong.
Wang was born in 1991 in Guilin. Her parents were both middle school teachers. She showed an unusual talent for math at an early age. When she was just five years old, she already finished first‑grade math and went straight to second grade.
Some people think talent makes life easy. But Wang’s path was far from smooth. In middle school, her grades were not good at first—she was not in the top 100. But she didn’t give up. She worked very hard, and later became one of the top ten students in her grade.
At the age of sixteen, she entered Peking University and learned more about math. In 2011, Wang went to France to study. “I felt a little lost at that time,” the girl said. “I gave up math and studied architecture (建筑学) for six months. I just doubted myself because my classmates were all very smart. Then I remembered how hard I had learned math before.”
Wang became confident again and returned to math. She studied even harder and got her PhD at MIT (麻省理工博士学位). This past February, Wang did something really amazing. She solved a century‑old math problem—the Kakeya Conjecture (挂谷猜想). Mathematicians (数学家) all over the world were so surprised and excited!

These days, many people in big cities often have a cup of coffee to start their day. People in Gaixin, a small village in Yunnan, also do the same. There is even a coffee centre in the village. Visitors can take lessons in the centre and learn how to make coffee.
Years ago, Gaixin was just a small village in Yunnan. Most people here made a living by feeding animals and farming. In 2023, the village worked out a seed-to-cup plan. It hoped villagers would join in the coffee industry. The plan really worked. More and more coffee shops appeared there. Villagers found jobs in the shops and had a better life. On 18 May, 2024, a large coffee park opened in Gaixin. Many visitors from all over the country went to the park. They enjoyed coffee beans and turned them into drinks by themselves.
Wei Xiaolin, from Gaixin, is a 22-year-old girl in Kunming. When she heard that there would be a coffee park in her hometown, she was excited. Wei wanted to get a job in the coffee park because she thought it was interesting and she wanted to work near home. At that time, Wei didn’t know much about coffee. Now she not only learns about different coffee beans but also can make different coffee drinks. She hopes more visitors will come to Gaixin and learn about its coffee culture.
From a farming village to a coffee village, Gaixin’s transition shows that coffee brings economic growth to the village. Gaixin is becoming better and better.

It is easy to be worried about the future of our planet. Forests are disappearing. Water cycles are breaking down. Pollution is harming cities. But I am still a little bit hopeful about our planet’s future.
Nature is making a comeback in many places. Even in the worst landscapes, nature is developing and regaining its own land. Wolves are moving across Europe and there are more tigers in India. I am not saying we should stop worrying about losing biodiversity (生物多样性), but the good news is that nature isn’t so fragile. And in many parts of the world, we are giving it more room to do its thing. For example, farmers are returning land to nature in some areas.
The population is getting smaller. We used to think a continuing baby boom (生育高峰) was a danger to the planet. But today, couples are having half as many children as half a century ago. In fact, the fear in much of the world is that the population is becoming smaller.
Our modern world depends less on materials. This century, the UK’s consumption (消耗) of materials has fallen from 16 tons a year per head to 11 tons. Why? We make much more with less by using modern ways of producing goods. And today’s wealthy people spend less money on materials and more on lifestyle experiences: eating out, taking exercise, attending concerts and so on.
I agree that the worst could still happen. To avoid it, we have no choice but to act. And that means staying positive.
66. How does the writer explain people’s worries about the planet in paragraph 1?
A. By telling stories. B. By describing facts. C. By offering advice. D. By comparing ideas.
67. What does the underlined word “fragile” probably mean in paragraph 2?
A. Active. B. Light. C. Weak. D. Quiet.
68. According to the passage, today’s wealthy people may spend more money .
A. doing sports B. buying clothes C. producing goods D. holding concerts
69. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How we can protect our future planet. B. How we can control population growth.
C. Why we should reduce the use of materials. D. Why we should stay hopeful about the earth.

The internet has provided us with unmatched ways to get information but it is also sounding alarms. Some experts argue that the internet will produce forgetfulness in the minds of those learning to use it, because they won’t practise their memory.
Is the internet really doing harm to our memories — or will our doubtful experts be proven wrong? After all, the brain’s attention system (系统) and preferences for novel experiences were already there long before the digital age, and our ability to remember is nearly inexhaustible (无穷尽的). According to Michael Merzenich, a brain researcher, every brain is a work in progress; it keeps changing throughout our lives, depending on how we use it.
But our brains don’t work well when we’re not focused. When we repeatedly check text messages and social media during work, we are weakening our ability to form both short-and long-term memories, experts say. The flooding of information influences our ability to remember, too. Though our brains are designed to look for new data, too much of it may be causing this natural drive to go wild. The compulsion to continuously take in information means we often check social media when we should be doing “memory housekeeping” by giving our brains some rest. Another problem: the effortless way of receiving information online. Trying to actively recall (回忆) data is a good workout for the brain, but today we are using online search tools instead.
However, the internet may be changing only what we remember, not our ability to do so, suggests Columbia University psychologist (心理学家) Betsy Sparrow. In fact, the internet is becoming an outside hard drive for our memories. Some worry that this is having a negative effect on society, but Sparrow suggests this will change our way of learning from a focus on remembering facts to one on understanding ideas.
As is shown in a 2008 study, using the internet exercised the brain more than reading among older adults with strong computer skills. And two Harvard psychologists argue that not needing to remember facts might free our minds to focus on more meaningful tasks.
“There may be costs caused by our increased dependence on the internet, but generally the benefits are going to outweigh those costs,” says Benjamin Storm, a psychologist. “It seems pretty clear that memory is changing, but is it changing for the better? At this point, we don’t know.”
70. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Internet users remember facts better than non-users.
B. Novel experiences improve the brain’s attention system.
C. Checking social media can give the brain proper breaks.
D. The internet may produce a change of focus in learning.
71. How does Benjamin Storm feel about the effects of the internet on memory?
A. Uneasy and doubtful. B. Positive but still uncertain.
C. Negative but still hopeful. D. Encouraged and confident.
72. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To argue for a belief. B. To challenge a solution.
C. To present different views. D. To examine causes and effects.

Zhou Lei is a researcher at the Hubei Academy of Agricultural Sciences. He won the China Youth May Fourth Medal in 2022. He has made great progress in the improvement of rice over the years. So far he has bred (培育) 16 new kinds of rice. This makes sure China has enough grain to feed its people.
Zhou often has chances to go abroad and exchange (交流) experience with others. One of the visits to the United States made Zhou realize that even though China was playing a leading role in rice research in the world, its agricultural industry was still behind some developed countries. After returning to China, Zhou decided to use his skills to help China in agriculture. Instead of staying in a comfortable office, Zhou always worked in the field. Sometimes, he even took care of his crops 24 hours a day. In August, southern China experienced very high temperatures. This had a bad influence on the crops in Zhou’s field.
However, Zhou never gave up. He thought it opened a window for him to do further study. He said, “Sometimes we just need to find ways to overcome high temperatures, and this also helps us choose rice.”
