For twenty years, the internet has been my second home while communicating
science.Recently,I came across an image:a crying Earth surrounded by fallen trees,
declaring,"No intelligent species would destroy their own home. This image troubled me
deeply.I refuse to let my eight-year-old son believe humans are stupid or evil-because it's
obviously untrue. But I often find myself quite lonely.I'm wondering if,perhaps, there
are other folks out there who feel the same as I do.
We didn't cause climate change through being stupid, but through being extremely
smart. Our ancestors burned coal to solve urgent problems:growing more food, heating
and lighting homes. We want to provide a good life for ourselves and our children. The
results have been astonishing. In the U.S.in 1895 one quarter of people died before age
five.Today it's under 1 percent, and we will keep pushing until it hits zero.Imagine the
essays Ben Franklin or Mark Twain would write about this level of advancement. How
would they keep tears from their eyes if they saw what we've achieved?
So much of that achievement has been based on the fossil fuels we've burned to
generate it,whether coal, natural gas or oil. We've learned that this harms both the
environment and people, and to our credit we aren't always bad at addressing this.It was
not long ago that London cleaned its smoke-blackened air. When rain becomes acidic, the
world changes its policies. When harms are done locally,we tend to be pretty good at
cleaning things up.Here's where I feel hope:we have already done this, and we know it
is possible.
I don't want my son growing up thinking that his species is in some way evil.I want
him thinking humans are problem solvers, and whatever strategies we take to fix global
warming will create more new problems, too. This is a pretty normal story for intelligent
species.

Awe(敬畏)experiences typically involve the perception(感知)of something incredibly
vast or powerful. These are often encounters with nature-such as looking at a broad view
of mountains or up at the billions of stars in the night sky."Awe is the feeling of being in
the presence of something vast that goes beyond your understanding of the world,"said
Dacher Keltner,a psychologist at the University of California,Berkeley.
At the University of Chicago's Human Nature and Potentials Lab,research has
shown that children over the age of four can perceive and respond to awe-inspiring
experiences. This early sense of awe influences their motivation for learning and self-
perception. When exposed to awe-inspiring visuals, such as vast natural scenes or natural
disasters, children feel a "small self"compared to their feelings after viewing everyday
nature imagery, which makes them more motivated to explore things that interest them
and to understand things in the world that they hadn't learned much about yet.
While awe is a highly personal experience, evidence suggests that it has significant
social effects. In one experiment, participants who were asked to stand staring at tall trees
for a minute were more likely to help others than those who looked at a building,
suggesting that being in an awe-inspiring environment increases morality and reduces
feelings of self-centeredness.
"This is especially critical in the age of social media,"said Dr.Keltner."We are at
this cultural moment of self-center,criticism,and entitlement(优越感);awe gets us out
of that.It does this by helping us get out of our own heads and realize our place in the
larger context, our communities,he explained."Might awe cause people to become more
invested in the greater good, giving more to charity, volunteering to help others,or doing
more to reduce their impact on the environment? Our research would suggest that the
answer is yes..”

Most people in the Netherlands are convinced that their consumption patterns affect
the environment. Many of them are looking for ways to reduce their footprint. However,
the reality is more complicated, according to a research by Leiden PhD candidate Levon
Amatuni, who studied car sharing and the reuse of phones. He used his background in
computer science and mathematics to model and measure the benefits of such practices.
His research shows users of car-sharing platforms reduce their impact by only 3 to 18
percent-much less than 51 or 37 percent claimed in previous research. This is caused by
so-called "rebound effects",which are rarely accounted for by companies or even
researchers.
For example, shared vehicles are replaced with new models more frequently than
private cars.Additionally, the introduction of sharing schemes (can encourage
people to drive when they would have otherwise taken public transport. These rebound
effects turn out to be highly influential.Amatuni also found users of sharing platforms
don't significantly reduce their driving."And if they do,they often take buses and trains,
which aren't emission-free,"he says.While public transport is usually a better option,its
impact is not negligible. So,this data must be included to make an accurate assessment.
Similarly,Amatuni discovered that a second-hand phone only offsets (about
one-third of a new phone's production.Rebound effects are the cause.If people couldn't
sell their old devices, they would use them for longer.
In other words, reuse both extends the lifetime of a device-by giving it a new
owner-but also shortens it,as people tend to sell their newly bought devices sooner.
Amatuni doesn't want people to conclude taking small steps towards sustainability is
pointless."Our intentions are still what's most important,he says,"but meanwhile,
people need to realise there're no easy fixes. He recommends prioritising overall
consumption reduction rather than continuing current habits while trying to make them
more efficient.
32.What is the focus of Amatuni's research?
A.The ways of reducing people's footprint.

I vividly remember the process of moving in for the first time:stuffing clothes,
comfort items, and pieces of my childhood into various bags and boxes. It was a whirlwind
(of excitement.36 What would it be like living at college?Would I get along
with my roommate? How would I make friends with complete strangers?
37 I had always felt like I struggled more than others to find "my people".In
high school,I had a few close friends, but it always seemed like everyone else had these
big, inseparable friend groups that did everything together.I wanted that, and the sense of
belonging,too.
Like many,I was attracted by the first people I met in college.38 We lived next
to each other, ate together, and stayed up late together. They were my early friend
group, and they brought laughter, growth, and memories-both positive and negative.
Those highs and lows taught me an important lesson:Not every friendship is meant to
last,and that's okay.
Your friendships don't just impact your social life-they affect your motivation, your
academics, and, among other things, your sense of self.I have found it valuable to
surround myself with people who share my values to keep me grounded.39 College
is one of the few places in life where you're surrounded by people from vastly different
backgrounds and experiences.Keeping an open mind is just as important as finding
common ground.
College can be,and probably will be,chaotic.People come and go.You'll probably
cry over friendships that didn't work out.40 That's all part of the process.Over
time,you will find your people.
A.They're part of your story.
B.But it was also filled with uncertainty.
C.I wouldn't trade my friendship for anything.
D.They mostly so happened to be the people on my floor.
E.That said, don't limit yourself to just those who are like you.
F.You may smile at memories with people no longer close with.
G.Of all the unknowns, the last question consumed me the most.

As a single mother,I've never doubted my daughter Jane's dream to be a singer on
the stage. At an early age,she was crazy about singing.Whenever she had a chance, she
would sing to her heart's content. Her sweet and charming voice tended to get people
around attracted to her songs.
Living in a small city,I took several odd jobs, determined to do everything in my
power to support her.Soon after Jane attended school, her music teacher Mary noticed her
talent by chance and volunteered to give her some guidance on how to sing.Jane practiced
so hard that before long she made great progress in singing.
Unfortunately, one noon a year later,Jane was crossing the street when a careless
driver knocked her down. She was rushed to hospital. When I hurried there, the doctor
told me that my daughter would probably not stand on her own feet.I froze with shock,
feeling as if I had been thrown into a dark world.Weak and dizzy,I was about to fall to
the ground when someone took hold of me.
It was Mary who got the news and raced here. She comforted me,saying firmly,
"Grace,Jane needs you.You must stay calm and strong.I nodded.Having calmed
down,I entered the ward with Mary.
That night,Jane recovered her consciousness and opened her eyes.Holding her
hand,I said,"My dear,everything would be fine."Mary comforted her gently,"I know
you are a strong girl,Jane.Don't worry. We'll be standing by you.I was heartbroken to
see tears streaming down Jane's cheeks.
After two months,we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends

He studied art and design before he studied engineering. When he saw something that didn't work well, he got upset and work to improve IT. For example, his first invention was a vehicle with a ball for a wheel. This made IT easier to Carry heavy things in the garden and over rough ground. IT was an interesting new use for a ball. Also, even though he changed majors, he was still interested in art as well as designing. Take a look at this photo. What do you say? IT looks like a waterfall made from glass and water, with the water running up instead of falling down. That surprising, this was a piece of art that dyson made in two thousand three called rong garden. IT tricks the eye. Dyson is still inventing new things, but he is also interested in supporting education for students. He is even donated money to the university of cambridge to support students and research there, with a focus on technology. 听力部分到此结束。
