Will Gladstone,an amateur birder, was in his 5th-grade science class when he first heard of
the blue-footed booby,a beautiful,eye-catching bird.He learned that the population of this
particular bird was in decline. Will decided to raise money to support conservation efforts. As he
was brainstorming ideas,he looked down at his feet, and suddenly he had an idea.Feet,he
thought, blue feet!He decided to sell bright blue socks and donate the money to environmental
organizations trying to help the birds. His younger brother Matty joined him in his effort as his
partner. The boys started the Blue Feet Foundation(BFF)in 2016.
In the beginning,it was a challenge for the boys to gather support for their cause. They
decided to ask a better-known conservation organization to sponsor them. However, none were
willing to do so."They didn't agree to it because we were just kids,"says Will.
Although this was discouraging, the two persevered. Finally, they came across an
organization they hadn't heard of before:the Galapagos Conservancy (GC).Its mission was to
support conservation in the Galapagos Islands. These islands are home to about half of the
world's blue-footed boobies. They offered to highlight the foundation in the protection's
newsletter.It boosted the BFF's credibility.
Four years later, their hard work paid off. They amassed over 18,000 Instagram followers
and 10,000 Facebook followers. They sold 18,000 pairs of socks, sending them all across the
globe.Orders have come from 50 different countries. If you visit the picture gallery on their
website, you'll also see blue socks being modeled by a few famous people, including members
of the Blue Man Group and a Boston Bruins hockey player.
Although the population of these birds in the Galapagos has declined significantly over the
past 20 years,we have seen some hopeful signs. These include an increase in young birds.
However, there is still work to be done.Although the decline in population is slowing,it's not
reversing.Elderly birds are dying faster than chicks are being born.

A.Ambitious daydreamers.
B.Active bird researchers.
C.Resilient problem solvers.
D.Passionate science fans.
25.What contributed to Conservancy's decision to help the boys?
A.Their consistent goals.
B.Their accidental meet.
C.Their equal credibility.
D.Their financial strength.
26.What's the purpose of listing the numbers in paragraph 4?
A.To promote the fame of the Foundation.
B.To show the popularity of the boys'socks.
C.To highlight the impact of the Foundation.
D.To demonstrate the diversity of the customers.
27.What can be learned about the bird population from the last paragraph?
A.It remains stable.
B.It is still decreasing.
C.It is increasing slowly.
D.It is undergoing ups and downs.

Many environmental and behavioral factors can affect the body's internal clocks, which
control various body functions. However, modern life can throw off these biological times,
increasing our sensitivity to different conditions.Light,a major factor affecting the body's
internal clocks, has long been linked to various health impacts. This is evidenced in populations
like shift workers, who face a higher risk of heart disease due to night-time light exposure.
Previous studies that used satellite data found associations between people living in bright,
urban areas and heart disease, but they only measured outdoor light at night.Daniel Windred at
Flinders University and his colleagues wanted to know whether an individual's overall light
exposure was associated with heart problems.
They tracked about 89,000 people without heart disease who wore light sensors for one
week between 2013 and 2016,which is the biggest study of personal light exposure patterns and
heart health to date. The sensors recorded any natural or artificial light from their environment,
including that from phones.Over years, those with the brightest nights had a higher risk of
developing heart disease than those with dark nights. One representative case in the highest light
exposure group would be someone who turned on overhead lights for an hour between midnight
and 6 am."This means they have among the highest night light exposure-within the top 10%of
al!participants,"says Windred. He adds that the body continues to react to an artificial light after
it has been turned off,and even short exposures can have an effect.
The researchers controlled for factors like gender, age, smoking, and shift work. They also
showed that the association between light exposure and heart disease risk was independent of
sleep duration or quality, pointing to night light exposure as the key driver of the results.
"The importance of these observations cannot be underestimated,"says Martin Young at the
University of Alabama at Birmingham."With the coming of a society that operates around the
clock, disturbing our biological clock systems has become more and more common. This study
highlights the significant health dangers associated with exposure to light at the wrong time."
28.How are the health impacts of light exposure presented in the first paragraph?
A.By providing statistics.
B.By quoting a professional.
C.By giving an example.
D.By making an assumption.
29.What does paragraph 2 stress about previous studies?
A.Their goal.
B.Their process.
C.Their uniqueness.
D.Their limitation.
30.What is the main function of paragraph 3?
A.To compare different types of light sensors.
B.To argue that shift work causes heart disease.
C.To question the reliability of previous studies.
D.To present the design and findings of the study.
31.What is Martin Young's attitude to the research findings?
A.Supportive.
B.Critical.
C.Reserved.
D.Concerned.

A few of the greatest challenges in artificial intelligence are being worked on not by
computer scientists but by philosophers. The philosophers are tasked with making the next
generation of models more capable and reliable, but they also shed light on the mystery of
consciousness.
Jonathan Birch at the London School of Economics and Political Science says AI
companies are the big employers of philosophy PhDs right now."Topics that have been
researched in philosophy departments for decades-how to make rational decisions, what counts
as reasoning, what counts as evidence of consciousness-are suddenly of massive value to AI
companies,"says Birch.
One of the key tasks for this crop of philosophers is alignment, the AI industry term for
efforts to stop harmful content-such as revealing instructions on how to make bombs.Efforts to
stop AI models giving dangerous outputs were initially focused around putting in simple
black-and-white guardrails ()such as forbidding a model from talking about bombs entirely.
But these proved clumsy and easy to circumvent. Now,companies are pursuing more advanced
methods which lean heavily on philosophical understanding of right and wrong.
However,it's rarely straightforward.Researchers have found that if you tell a model to
break a rule in one specific situation,it will start breaking lots of other rules, says Shane Glackin
at the University of Exeter in the UK.And understanding why is exactly the sort of problem that
philosophy's logical analysis can crack.
Mahrad Almotahari at the University of Edinburgh sees value in philosophy expertise for
technology firms, but is sceptical that the toughest questions of machine consciousness will be
answered by them.Others see a potential problem on the horizon, with industry hiring
philosophers eventually leading to biased research that serves the interests of technology
companies.
"I wish we had made more progress on the big questions of philosophy before the arrival of
AI.If we had,we would have been better prepared.AI has now given these questions massive
urgency, and yet,the answers still seem far away,"says Birch.
32.What phenomenon is presented in the first two paragraphs?
A.Computer scientists are losing their jobs.
B.AI companies are turning to philosophy for help.
C.Philosophy PhDs are favored in the job market.
D.Philosophers outperform computer scientists.
33.What does the underlined word "circumvent"in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Take over.
B.Pick up
C.Get around.
D.Push forward.
34.How do the training methods of large language models shift?
A.From rigid rules to moral reasoning.
B.From technical fixes to logical analysis.
C.From theory analysis to practical use.
D.From simple tasks to complex situations.
高三英语试题第6页共10页
35.What question does the text center on?
A.Will philosophy work to the AI companies'advantage?
B.Why do AI companies prefer philosophers to coders?
C.How can philosophers transform the AI industry?
D.Can the problems in AI be solved by philosophy?

Have you ever experienced such moments:a warm smile from a stranger,a brief chat with
someone waiting in line,or a simple wave to a neighbor you hardly know? These tiny
interactions among strangers and familiar faces alike are called "microconnections".36
Yet their importance goes far beyond our awareness.
When people have a microconnection with a stranger, the levels of dopamine (in
their brain increase while the body's stress chemical decreases. The result is a greater sense of
well-being.
37 They enable both parties to gain a more positive mindset and greater
relaxation.
Another effect of these casual interactions lies in their influence on how you perceive
reality and respond to novel ideas.38 Thus brief contacts with them can offer
brand-new spiritual enrichment and broaden your perspectives on the world.Interestingly,
research shows people may actually be more open to considering opposing viewpoints when
talking to strangers than to close family members, which lays a solid foundation for in-depth and
original idea exchanges.
39 They build public trust, which in turn makes social communities more closely
connected.As Sandstrom,a well-known psychologist,explains,"That sense of community is a
huge thing we get from talking to strangers-it's just feeling there's this shared humanity and
that we are seen by other people and valued by other people."This feeling helps people
recognize themselves as part of a community.
In a world where people often feel disconnected, these small moments remind us of the
hidden bonds between ordinary individuals.A microconnection may bear lasting fruit.
40
A.They tend to slip our attention.
B.People are eager to interact with others.
C.Microconnections are also two-way streets.
D.Brief exchanges affect more than just the two individuals
E.Such encounters bring unnoticed changes to the inner world.
F.Those who you meet by chance possess diverse life experiences.
G.So next time do not hesitate to offer a smile to a person around you.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
James and Ally had been looking forward to their wilderness adventure for months. For the
past year and a half, they had been working extra hours and saving every penny for what they
believed would be the holiday of a lifetime. The six-day forest hike was to be the highlight of
their trip-a chance to explore places few tourists ever reached.
They had prepared carefully:a detailed map,a GPS device, enough food and water, and an
emergency radio. Both were experienced hikers, and they felt confident about travelling through
the forest on their own.The first two days were challenging but exciting. The heat was intense,
and the air felt heavy.Colorful birds flew above them, and strange sounds could be heard
everywhere. They walked alongside a river where they spotted a few wooden boats moving on it.
The boats reminded them that local people lived nearby, but they thought little of it at the time.
On the third night, they chose to camp on a small clearing on the hillside, far from the river,
thinking it would be safer and drier. The sky was clear, and they fell asleep under the stars,
believing the hardest part was behind them. But late that night,a violent storm hit without
warning.Strong winds tore their tent apart, and rain poured down like a curtain. They hurried to
gather their belongings, but the rain made everything wet within minutes.Their paper map
became soft and wet.The GPS screen flashed and stopped working, and the emergency radio
also failed. Most of their food was ruined, and only a few bottles of water and some snacks in
their backpacks survived.Dawn broke over a changed world, and the forest around them looked
unfamiliar.Without any tools to find their way, they were completely lost.
For a long moment, neither spoke. Then Ally looked at the rushing river and said hopefully,
"We saw wooden boats passing on this river before.Local villagers often travel by boat here.If
we stay by the bank, maybe a boat will pass by and save us."
