女
In 2006,as a 10-year-old living in one of Delhi's busiest markets,I would often run
downstairs to buy milk, eggs or vegetables for my mother. The shopkeepers knew me by
face and often guessed my order before I even spoke. These small market runs taught me
more than I realised at the time-quick mental maths, conversations with strangers, and
backup plans when a shop was shut.So much unintentional learning!
Over time, these routines became daily comfort.Whether it was me or my mother,
we enjoyed the smiles, brief chats, and snacks along the way-small moments that
quietly held our lives together.
Now,things are different.With Blinkit,Zepto,and Instamart,groceries arrive in 10
minutes. While I still enjoy shopping in the market after work,my mother begins her day
by comparing prices on apps and ordering everything with a few taps ()The grocery
trips that once lifted her mood, improved her health, and helped her stay connected with
the neighbourhood have disappeared. The joy of being known,of interacting,is dying.
And it's not just her. Many of us now rely more on apps and less on people. Our
growing reliance on instant delivery is reducing those everyday moments of interaction.
There's the financial cost too. When you're too tired or too busy to plan your groceries,
you end up ordering in pieces-adding things you don't need just to hit the free-delivery
minimum.
Of course, these apps are a gift on tough days when we're sick or short on time. But
next time you feel like opening a grocery app,try walking to your local shop instead. You
might come back with more than just groceries-a smile,a quick chat, and a sense of
connection.Sometimes, the cost of convenience isn't what you pay. It's what you miss.
24.What does the author think of early market runs?
A.Adventurous.B.Valuable.
C.Tiring.
D.Complex.
25.How did the author's mother change her shopping habit later?
A.She turned to online shopping.
B.She visited groceries with neighbours.
C.She cared about discounts in stores.
D.She ordered whatever lifted her mood.

26.What concerns the author about instant delivery?
A.It takes away small social moments.
B.It involves paying extra service fees.
C.It results in poor physical condition.
D.It makes people addicted to shopping.
27.What is implied in the last paragraph?
A.A shared gift doubles its joy.
B.Convenience comes at a cost.
C.A smile is free but worth a lot.
D.Rush breaks human connection.
In parts of Tanzania, soils are disappearing.A combination of climate change and
socioeconomic stresses has led to soil washing away into nearby rivers and lakes.
Recognising the threat, one community set up an environmental committee to allow
strategic decision-making for soil restoration. They worked with researchers led by Will
Blake at the University of Plymouth, who are experimenting with a portable gamma ray
sensor that can quickly assess the health of the soil. The community identified areas where
the soil was greatly depleted, and so excluded their cattle. With the pressure removed, the
land re-greened quickly and the soil began to recover.
Soil health is crucial to agriculture.Unfortunately, unsustainable practices like heavy
fertiliser use and ploughing lead to weak soil that washes away in heavy rains-reducing
the land's productivity in the long run.Further threats come from climate change, which
is causing more frequent extreme weather events like droughts and heavy rains-leading
to even more soil erosion(侵蚀).
The solution is to understand the soil better,in particular, what makes it healthy and
resilient(适应力强的),to develop more sustainable and climate-smart farming.New
sensor technologies promise to revolutionise soil health monitoring.Traditionally, this is
done by taking a small number of samples for lab analysis, which only gave a small
amount of data points. The newer approaches, such as gamma sensing, allow rapid
surveying of fields and farms.
Blake emphasises that the technology is only half the story."Collecting quantitative
evidence through a natural science lens isn't enough,"he says.Soil data has to enable
farmers to work out solutions and the sensor technology helps.
Scientists helicoptering in and offering solutions doesn't work, partly because it
ignores the extensive local environmental knowledge of the farmers. In Tanzania,
researchers first assumed that soil erosion was caused by overgrazing(过度放牧).But
when they spoke to local people, they realised the grazing decisions were actually a
symptom of deeper problems, such as agropastoralists()being pushed onto less
suitable lands by population growth and other factors. The communities are aware of all
these factors.
28.What does the underlined word "depleted"mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Polluted.B.Reduced.
C.Enriched.

A.The current agricultural issues.
B.The harmful effects of soil erosion.
C.The challenges to soil health.

A.The sampling data are limited.
B.The analysis is time-consuming.
C.It affects fields and farms badly.
D.It requires expensive lab equipment.
31.Why does the author mention overgrazing in the last paragraph?
A.To introduce more serious problems.

Needles, though essential for delivering many vital medicines, are not popular among
patients. Many people experience discomfort or anxiety at the sight of a needle, making
injections an unpleasant experience. Now,new research led by Giovanni Traverso
at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)offers a way to give medicine without
this discomfort-by copying how squids (shoot ink and water.
Dr.Traverso's tiny automated injectors are packaged in capsules that patients can
swallow.Once inside the digestive system, the capsules break down, releasing the
injectors, which then deliver drugs through the surface layer of stomach or other digestive
organs and into the subsurface tissues below. This method allows patients to receive
treatment without seeing or feeling a needle.
Although the technique is promising,it is not yet entirely reliable. For an injector to
work effectively,it must be positioned almost perfectly upright against the target tissue.
With skin injections,a medical professional can adjust the angle by hand, but inside the
digestive system, this is much more difficult.
To solve this problem,Dr.Traverso turned to squids, which can shoot ink and water
at high pressure in multiple directions.Inspired by this natural ability,he and his team
worked with a medical company to develop tiny spring-loaded devices that release fast
streams of medicine when activated.Tests on digestive tissues from pigs and dogs showed
that the devices can effectively give injections even at angles below 70.
While human trials have yet to begin,Dr.Traverso hopes the technology will soon
help people with diabetes,a disease that requires the patients to get multiple injections
daily.A more convenient delivery system could make treatment easier and less stressful.
But the potential applications extend beyond diabetes-similar devices may one day be
used to administer vaccines,making immunization(免疫接种)more accessible..If all
goes well, fear of needles could become a thing of the past.
32.What can we learn about the new injectors from the first two paragraphs?
A.They are made from squid ink.
B.They are invisible to human eyes.
C.They enjoy popularity among patients.
D.They operate within the digestive system.
33.What challenge does Traverso's technique face?
A.Accessing the deep digestive system.
B.Having reliable medical professionals.
C.Finding a proper site for drug delivery.
D.Keeping the injector at a correct angle.
34.What can we infer about the technology from the last paragraph?
A.It proves effective in human trials.
B.It may cure people of needle anxiety.
C.It shows promises for future applications.
D.It will reduce the cost of diabetes treatment.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Secret of Squid Ink Shooting B.Painless Injection:A Gift from Squid
C.Nature:A Guide for Medical Innovation D.The Development of Injection Techniques

As an enthusiastic reader,I've always believed that the key to understanding the
world lies in the pages of a book.36 They introduce us to characters who feel as real
as the people around us.This connection between readers and the text is what makes
literature so powerful, and it's why I value my personal library. It's a collection that
reflects my journey through the world of words.
My library is not vast, but each book is carefully chosen.I have a mix of types in my
collection, ranging from classic literature to contemporary fiction.37 Each type
offers a different perspective,a new way of looking at life. While some books challenge
my thinking,others provide comfort.It's important to have a balance.A well-organized
library is like a well-balanced diet for the mind.
Among my favourites are the works of Jane Austen and George Orwell.Austen's
sharp observations on society and relationships are timeless. Her characters are imperfect
yet charming.Orwell,on the other hand, offers a stark (view of the world.38
Both authors, though different in style, have taught me invaluable lessons about
humanity.
39
Biographies (and life stories offer insights into the lives of
extraordinary individuals. They remind us that greatness comes in many forms.Reading
about the struggles and successes of others can be incredibly inspiring. It's a reminder that
we all have the potential to make a difference. These stories encourage me to reflect on my
own life and what I wish to leave behind.
My library is a reflection of who I am.It's a sign of my love of learning and my desire
to understand the world. Each book is a stepping stone on my journey of discovery. They
are companions in loneliness and guides in times of uncertainty.40
A.I also enjoy non-fiction.
B.I believe in the power of variety.
C.My library goes beyond a collection of books.
D.His stories are a warning and a call to action.
E.Through them,I continue to explore,to grow,and to dream.

My brother Jack was so smart that he earned a full scholarship to Harvard.I often
wished he wasn't so perfect because it made me feel like I had to work twice as hard just
to prove myself to others. On one hand, his success was a challenge that I enjoyed, but on
the other hand,it was a huge pressure that I struggled to cope with.
To balance his record in high school,I felt like I was constantly running on a
treadmill(跑步机),devoting every moment to a non-stop race..There was no room for
relaxation as I pursued that perfect record. My life seemed to be compressed into a series
of endless tasks and deadlines.
"I needed an A,"I repeated to myself before the biology test,so that I would
maintain my perfect record and secure a place on the honor roll.I studied till the last
minute of lunch and rushed to class.I felt a sense of confidence as I glanced over the first
page of the test, quickly filling in the answers with a smile. However,as I turned to the
last page,my mind went blank.Time ticked by,and soon, the classroom began to empty
as students finished their tests and left, except me."Lara, class ended.I need you to hand
in your test,"Mrs.Phloem said, stretching out her hand.Reluctantly,I handed her the
test paper.
The next day,I received my test back.I stared dumbfounded at the red mark:76.
Not even a B minus,my mind screamed.Just average.It's over.No perfect record.I felt
an unprecedented(前所未有的)sense of frustration and disappointment.After school,I
dragged my heavy feet back home. When I pushed open the door,Jack was sitting on the
couch, reading.Seeing his leisurely state,I cried, hard to contain the jealousy and sadness
in my heart.Jack immediately noticed the depression on my face.He asked with concern,
"What's wrong,Lara?"Blinded by frustration mixed with a touch of jealousy,I shouted
at him,“How I wish you were not so perfect!”
