Unit4 A better me
Start up 第一课 (教学设计)
I. Teaching Aims
1. Read and understand Lingling's basketball story and answer the question "What helps Lingling join the basketball team?".
2. Learn and use key words and expressions: goal, basketball team, test, work hard, make it, join, kind, try again.
3. Talk about personal goals using "I'm going to..." and "I want to..." structures.
4. Understand the importance of having goals and never giving up.
II. Key and Difficult Points
Key points: Understanding the story about Lingling's basketball test; learning goal-related vocabulary; using "I'm going to..." to talk about goals.
Difficult points: Using past tense correctly to retell the story (was/were/going to); expressing goals with reasons in complete sentences.
III. Teaching Tools
PPT courseware, basketball and sports pictures, vocabulary cards, textbook, audio files, goal checklist worksheet.
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Lead-in (5 mins)
[Purpose] To activate students' prior knowledge about goals and sports.
1. Show pictures of different sports (basketball, football, swimming, etc.) and ask: "Do you like sports? What sports do you play?"
2. Write "Do you have goals?" on the blackboard. Ask students: "What are your goals? Why is it important to have goals?" Let them share in pairs.
3. Introduce the unit topic: "Today we're going to learn about Unit 4 A better me."
Step 2 While-reading (15 mins)
[Purpose] To develop reading skills and understand the story.
1. Pre-reading: Show the title "Lingling's basketball test". Ask: "What do you think the story is about?" Let students predict.
2. While-reading (first time): Students read the diary entries quickly and answer: "What helps Lingling join the basketball team?"
3. While-reading (second time): Students read again and number the sentences in order (Activity 2). Check answers together.
4. Read the story aloud together. Pay attention to pronunciation and intonation.
Step 3 Post-reading (10 mins)
[Purpose] To practice speaking and consolidate vocabulary.
1. Ask comprehension questions: "Why was Lingling sad? What did Amy do? How did Lingling feel in the end?"
2. Work in pairs: Look at the goal table (Activity 2 on page 1). Students read the goals (do better in school, eat and drink healthily, make new friends, learn something new, read more, be clean and tidy, exercise more) and write their own scores.
3. Students share their goals with a partner using "I'm going to..." and "I want to...".
Step 4 Summary and Homework (5 mins)
[Purpose] To summarize the lesson and extend learning.
1. Summarize: "What have we learned today?" Review key words and the sentence pattern "I'm going to...".
2. Homework: Write 3-5 sentences about your goals using "I'm going to..." and share them with your parents.

VI. 教学反思
本课通过Lingling参加篮球队的故事引入goals话题,学生兴趣较浓。故事阅读环节大部分学生能理解大意,但部分后进生对过去时态(was/were)理解较慢,后续可增加时间轴辅助理解。Goal表格活动学生参与度高,但少数学生只会蹦单词不会用完整句表达,下次可提前准备句式支架卡供参考。小组讨论时间把控还需加强,避免拖堂。
