With the world becoming warmer because of climate change, mosquitoes (蚊子) are busy enlarging their living space. Now, a Chinese company has created a new device (设备) which can detect mosquitoes and then kill them. The device promises a future in which the peace and quiet of a summer evening is no longer broken by flying mosquitoes.
The small, light device uses AI to find mosquitoes as small as 2 millimeters (毫米). Within 0.003 seconds, it sends out a high-energy laser (激光) that disables a mosquito midflight—a course that can hardly be seen by humans and can kill up to 30 mosquitoes every second.
It is not easy to improve the accuracy rate (准确率). The early models of the device failed to correctly discover mosquitoes within a short distance, as they were influenced by background noise. After years of hard work, careful research and countless tests, the company put AI and laser technology together, enabling a discovery rate of over 95 percent within six meters.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are over 3,500 kinds of mosquitoes in the world. About 200 kinds can transmit diseases. Every year, mosquitoes kill more than 700,000 people. This new Chinese device provides a safe and effective way to fight mosquitoes and protect people’s health.
42. What does the underlined word “detect” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A. Warn. B. Blow. C. Watch. D. Discover.
43. How does the writer prove the effectiveness of the device in Paragraph 2?
A. By telling a story. B. By listing numbers.
C. By making comparisons. D. By using experts’ words.
44. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. How the device was tested. B. The influence of noise on accuracy.
C. How AI was used in the device. D. The road to a high accuracy rate.
45. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Climate change makes mosquitoes have more living areas.
B. WHO introduces different kinds of mosquitoes.
C. A new AI laser device from China can kill mosquitoes safely and effectively.
D. Many people die of diseases caused by mosquitoes every year.

What happens if you don’t get enough sleep? Randy Gardner, a high school student in the US, wanted to find out. He designed an experiment for a school science project. With Dr. William and two friends watching him, Gardner stayed awake for 264 hours and 12 minutes. That’s eleven days and nights without sleep!
What influences did sleeplessness have on Gardner? After 24 hours, he had trouble reading and watching TV. By the third day, he had trouble doing things with his hands. By the fourth day, he saw one thing as another. Over the next few days, he couldn’t express himself clearly enough for people to understand him. He also had trouble remembering things, and by the eleventh day, he couldn’t even pass a counting test.
When Gardner finally went to bed, he slept for over 14 hours. The second night he slept for 12 hours, the third night he slept for over ten hours, and by the fourth night, he was sleeping as usual again.
Though Gardner got well quickly, scientists believe going without sleep can be dangerous. They say people shouldn’t repeat his experiment. Tests on white rats (鼠) have shown how serious sleeplessness is. After several weeks without sleep, the rats started losing fur. And although they ate more food than usual, they lost weight and finally died.
During your lifetime, you may spend 25 years or more sleeping. Why? Surprisingly, scientists don’t know, either. They once thought we “turned our brains off” when we slept. Now they know our brains are active when we sleep. Some think sleep helps replenish (补足) brain cells. Others think it helps the body grow and reduce stress. Perhaps sleep is like food and water—we may not understand why we need it so much, but we always pay a price when we don’t get enough.
46. Why does the writer begin the passage with a question?
A. To suggest that everyone needs enough sleep.
B. To show that scientists still don’t understand sleep.
C. To introduce the topic and catch readers’ attention.
D. To advise readers to stay up late for more experiments.
47. Which is the right order of what happened to Gardner in the experiment?
①He had trouble using his hands. ②He failed to pass a counting test.
③He mistook one thing for another. ④He couldn’t remember things well.
A. ④②③① B. ③①④② C. ①②④③ D. ①③④②
48. What conclusion can we draw from the last paragraph?
A. Scientists have known the reason for enough sleep.
B. People spend a lot of money on sleep in their lifetime.
C. Sleep is of great importance no matter what the reason is.
D. Our brains stop working suddenly when we are asleep.

On July 23, 2026, a historic moment happened in the world of mathematics. Chinese mathematician Wang Hong won the Fields Medal (菲尔兹奖) at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia. Known as the “Nobel Prize of Mathematics,” this award is given every four years to outstanding mathematicians under 40. Wang Hong is not only the first Chinese to win this prize but also the third woman in its 90-year history to receive this great honor.
Born in Guilin, Guangxi, in 1991, she had a strong interest in math from a young age. However, when she entered Peking University at 16, she was not admitted to (被录取) the math department directly. Instead of giving up, she tried her best and later successfully got into the School of Mathematical Sciences. This shows her determination to follow her true passion.
Her research in the math world has brought about amazing achievements. In 2025, she and her partner solved a century-old problem that had puzzled mathematicians for a long time. Her 127-page proof was highly praised for its strict logic and clear expression.
Despite her great success, Wang Hong is very down-to-earth. When facing difficulties in research, she doesn’t stay in her office feeling worried or anxious. Instead, she goes out to do sports or take a morning walk to clear her mind.
Wang Hong’s story tells us that true mathematical research comes from deep love and hard work. She hopes her success can encourage more young people, especially girls, to bravely pursue what they love. As she continues her research, her spirit will surely shine brighter in the future.
49. What is special about Wang Hong winning the Fields Medal?
A. She is the first woman in history to win the prize.
B. She won the prize at the age of 16.

D. She solved a century-old problem.
50. How is the passage mainly organized?
A. By comparing different mathematicians.
B. By listing the ways of solving a math problem.
C. By introducing an inspiring mathematician.
D. By explaining the history of the Fields Medal.
51. What can we infer about Wang Hong from the passage?
A. Wang Hong entered the math department directly when she went to Peking University.
B. Doing sports helps Wang Hong get away from worries in her research.
C. Wang Hong solved the century-old math problem all by herself.
D. The Fields Medal can be given to mathematicians of any age.
52. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The History of the Fields Medal
B. Wang Hong: A Down-to-Earth Mathematician
C. How to Solve Century-Old Math Problems
D. The Importance of Doing Sports

The eagle has amazing natural talents. It can fly high in the sky without any effort. Its strong wings and sharp eyes help it rule the sky and easily reach the top of the pyramid.
The snail (蜗牛), though, doesn’t have such great abilities. Yet it can also reach great heights. Realizing its limitations (限制), the snail focuses on small but continuing progress. Each day, it moves slowly but never stops. It doesn’t give up when it meets difficulties.
This gives us an important life lesson. If we lack the eagle’s natural gifts to achieve goals quickly, we can learn the snail’s spirit. We should never give up and take small steps one by one. Life is like a piggy bank (存钱罐). Every small effort, whether studying a bit longer, learning a new skill, or working hard, accumulates (累加) over time. These efforts will be paid back in the end. By keeping doing it every day, we can get closer to our own “pyramid tops”.

I’m Li Hua. It’s my great honor to be here and talk about how to adapt to junior high school life.
In my first term, I also felt stressed facing new challenges. Junior high brings more subjects and heavy tasks. To get used to these great changes, we should make careful plans for our study and daily life. It’s important to set small and practical goals. They can encourage us to make steady progress step by step. Besides, don’t be afraid to turn to teachers and classmates for help whenever you meet trouble. Take an active part in after-school activities, too. They will help you make new friends and enjoy your wonderful and colorful school life.
That’s all. Thank you!
