He was one of the greatest mathematicians in ancient China. He lived during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, more than 1,500 years ago. His name was Zu Chongzhi.
Zu Chongzhi is most famous for calculating the value of pi (π) between 3.1415926 and 3.1415927. That was the most accurate pi value in the world at that time, and it took more than 1,000 years for someone else to beat his record.
But Zu was not only a mathematician. He was also an astronomer. He found that the old calendar (历法) was not accurate enough, so he worked out a new one called the Daming Calendar. It was used in China for many years.
What made Zu so successful? First, he was very careful and hard-working. In his time, there were no computers or calculators. He had to do all the math with counting rods (算筹), which looked like small sticks. It is said that he worked on the calculation for days without stopping.
Second, Zu was not afraid to question old ideas. Many people before him had accepted the old calendar without doubt. But Zu studied it carefully and found the mistakes. Some people laughed at him and said he was wrong. But he did not give up. He used his own observations to prove that he was right.
Today, a crater on the moon is named after Zu Chongzhi. And in 1967, astronomers named a small planet after him too. He is remembered not just for his numbers, but for his curious mind and brave spirit.

Every Spring Festival, my family has a special tradition. We make dumplings together on New Year's Eve. It is not just about the food—it is about the time we spend together.
This tradition started with my grandma. When she was a young mother, she would make dumplings for the whole family. As the children grew up and moved away, she still kept the tradition going. Every year, she would call everyone and say, "Come home for New Year's Eve. We'll make dumplings."
Now it is my turn to carry on the tradition. Last year, I was in charge of making the dumpling mixture. I followed Grandma's recipe carefully—pork, cabbage, a little ginger, and some soy sauce. But when I finished, it looked too dry. I almost added more oil, but then I remembered what Grandma always said: "Taste it first. Don't just follow the recipe with your eyes—follow it with your heart."
I took a small bite. It was fine. I had just mixed it too quickly.
We sat around the table, making dumplings. My little brother made funny ones that looked like small moons. My dad tried to make a dumpling shaped like a fish, but it fell apart. We all laughed.
When the dumplings were cooked, Grandma put one special dumpling in the bowl for each person. One of them had a coin inside. Whoever ate it would have good luck in the new year. This year, it was me! Everyone cheered.
I think family traditions are important. They give us a sense of belonging. When we make dumplings together, we are not just cooking. We are passing down love and memories from one generation to the next.

Every day, millions of teenagers around the world spend hours on social media. It can be a great way to stay in touch with friends. But for some, it is becoming a problem.
A recent study shows that about 38% of middle school students check their social media feeds more than 20 times a day. Many say they feel nervous if they cannot check their phones. Some even stay up late scrolling, which makes them tired in class the next day.
Dr. Wang, a psychologist, says that social media is not all bad. "It helps teenagers feel connected to their friends, especially when they are going through a difficult time," she says. "The problem is when it starts to take over their lives."
So what can you do if you feel you are spending too much time on social media? Here are some tips:
• Set a phone curfew (宵禁). Stop using your phone one hour before bedtime. This will help you sleep better.
• Turn off notifications. You don't need to check your phone every time it buzzes. Check it only at certain times, like after lunch or after dinner.
• Find a hobby. If you are busy doing something you enjoy—sports, painting, reading—you will less likely reach for your phone.
• Talk to someone. If you feel that you cannot control your screen time, talk to your parents or a teacher. They can help you make a plan.
Remember: social media is a tool, not your whole life. The real world—your family, your friends, your hobbies—is waiting for you.
36.How many times do about 38% of middle school students check their social media a day?
A.More than 10 times. B.More than 20 times. C.More than 30 times. D.More than 40 times.
37.What does Dr. Wang think of social media?
A.It is completely bad for teenagers. B.It is all good and has no problems.
C.It has good sides but can become a problem if overused. D.It should be stopped in middle schools.
38.What does the underlined word "notifications" in the tip list probably mean?
A.通知提醒 B.手机壁纸 C.短信费用 D.游戏关卡
39.Which of the following is NOT a tip given in the passage?
A.Stop using phone an hour before bedtime. B.Check your phone only at certain times.
C.Find a hobby to keep yourself busy. D.Sell your phone and buy a new one.
40.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Social media is the worst invention for teenagers.

A.The oil B.The recipe C.The mixture D.The dumpling

B.Teenagers should learn to use social media in a healthy way.
C.All teenagers are addicted to social media.
D.Parents should take away teenagers' phones.

Dear Tom,
I am sorry to hear that you are stressed out because of the coming exams and can't sleep well these days. Don't worry—many students feel the same way before big exams.
Here is my advice. First, you'd better make a careful study plan. This will help you use your time wisely and feel more in control. Second, don't study all day long. Taking a walk or doing some exercise after supper can help you relax and sleep better. Third, if you really feel too nervous, talk to your parents or teachers. They are always there to help you.
I hope my advice will be helpful. Take care of yourself, and I am sure you will do well in the exams.
Yours,
Li Hua
