Is there a link (联系) between music and language? In the latest studies, the answer is yes: Music improves certain language skills. Here are two examples.
In a study from Northwestern University, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians. Those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians could hear the talking person more clearly.
Nina Kraus was the leader of the study. “Musicians hear better because they learn to focus on certain sounds,” she said. Think of violinists in an orchestra (管弦乐队). When they play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others, too. The violinists must listen closely to their own playing. With this training, musicians can pick out certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.
Gottfried Schlaug is a doctor at Harvard Medical School. He works with stroke patients (中风患者). Because of their illness, these people can’t say their names, ages or other information normally (正常地). However, they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug found that singing words helped his patients to finally speak. Why does this work? Schlaug isn’t sure. Music seems to activate different parts of the brain (大脑), including the damaged (受损的) parts. This helps patients use those parts of the brain again.
So, music is not only fun, but also good for us in many other ways. Music improves our hearing and speech. It can even help sick people get better!
36. Which group could hear a person talking better in a noisy place according to the study?
A. People who didn’t learn music at all.
B. People with musical training.
C. People who listened to music often.
D. People who often talked in a noisy room.
37. Why can musicians hear certain sounds in noisy places?
A. Their ears are stronger than other people’s.
B. They use things to reduce (减少) noise around them.
C. They learn to listen to their sound during practice.
D. They never go to noisy places when they are playing.
38. What does the underlined word “activate” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Make something become valuable. B. Make something start working.
C. Make something run fast. D. Make something become big.
39. What’s the best structure of the text? (①=Paragraph 1)
A. ①—②③④—⑤ B. ①②—③④—⑤ C. ①②③—④—⑤ D. ①—②③—④⑤
40. Which would be the best title for the text?
A. How Music Training Improves Hearing
B. Why Learning Music Is Good for Hearing
C. Singing: A Way to Help Damaged Brains
D. Music Helps People with Language Skills

Every small step takes us forward. We can read more books, practice new skills, or ask for help from others. If we keep trying and never give up, one day our dreams will come true. That time will be the most beautiful time in life. It shows that hope and hard work can really change dreams into reality (现实).
41. What do many people do when they are young?

A. ①—②③④—⑤ B. ①②—③④—⑤ C. ①②③—④—⑤ D. ①—②③—④⑤

A. How Music Training Improves Hearing

Dear Chris,
I’m glad to know that you’re interested in Chinese paper-cut.
It is a famous traditional Chinese folk art with a history of over 1500 years. People usually make paper-cuts with scissors and red paper on special days like the Spring Festival. Then they stick these colorful works on doors or windows. Most paper-cuts are in shapes of flowers, animals or good luck patterns. We Chinese think they can bring us good luck. I love paper-cuts because they look really amazing and carry our love for a happy life.
I hope you can come to China to learn to make paper-cuts one day!
Yours,
Li Hua
