B When Williams learned about the library transformation project in 2023, she knew they would want to get involved. “It’s an important part of who we are. This project excited us immediately, and I knew it would be our reconnection point with the college,” she said. Williams and Henry met in the library, but they got to know each other through a shared lab with former Davidson Psychology Professor Scott Tonidandel. Williams spent long hours working on her psychology thesis (心理学论文) in the Watson Life Science building, which Henry also frequented — sometimes even to take a power nap during long study sessions. Both found a lifelong mentor (良师) in Tonidandel. While she was a student, Williams’ parents supported the college by giving to the Davidson Research Initiative, which funds opportunities for cooperative research and in-depth study between students and teachers in the summer. Watching them invest in the areas they most cared about, she knew she wanted to do the same. The couple imagine a library that will meet people where they are, a place where students can find community and refuge (庇护) outside of their dorms and classes. “Everyone needs a third place,” Williams said. “A central location away from home and work that meets your needs no matter what they might be. The library was a third place for us as students, but it didn’t offer as much as it could have.” While they’ve maintained connections with Davidson friends and mentors over the years, becoming involved with the library project has deepened their ties to the college. Whether they’re meeting with staff, grabbing dinner at Sabi or listening to students at the Nisbet Venture Fund competition, the couple has found many ways to reengage with campus life and the greater Davidson community. “There are so many ways to contribute to this place,” Henry said. “The idea of legacy (传承) at Davidson feels so strong, and we’re always redefining what that legacy means to us.” 4. Why did Williams feel excited about the library project? A. It brought back her fond memories. B. It would be a good place to read and relax. C. She could reconnect with Davidson College. D. She could meet with Professor Scott Tonidandel. 5. Who gave Williams inspiration to contribute to Davidson? A. Williams’ parents. B. Professor Tonidandel. C. Williams’ husband. D. Henry’s mentor. 6. What may be a “third place” according to Williams? A. A quiet place for doing homework. B. A nice place for students to socialize. C. A shelter from dangers on the campus. D. A location away from home and work. 7. What does Henry mainly indicate in the last paragraph? A. Davidson has a tradition of making contributions. B. Legacy has failed to be clearly defined at Davidson. C. We can each contribute to Davidson in unique ways. D. The legacy of Davidson must always be maintained. C Engineers from Johns Hopkins have looked to how snakes move around to inform the design of a new robot. It is hoped that the development could lead to search and rescue robots able to deal with all kinds of barriers with ease. “We look to these creepy creatures for movement inspiration because they are so highly skilled at steadily overcoming barriers in their day-to-day lives,” said Chen Li, senior author on the study. “Hopefully our robot can learn how to move across surfaces just like snakes.” Observing how a kingsnake climbed up steps of varying height and different surfaces, the researchers noted that the snake used both side-to-side wriggling (蠕动) and a balancing, outstretched motion to move forward. When faced with a step, the snake seemed to divide its body into three — the front and rear (后部) both moved back and forth while the middle section remained stiff. When approaching a step, the front section would increase in length, the middle section would remain roughly the same and the rear section would be shortened. Speed would be reduced and the wriggling would be less obvious for higher steps or those with smooth surfaces, to help maintain stability (稳定). After examining video recordings of the snakes, graduate student Qiyuan Fu set about building a snake-inspired robot. An early version of the 10-section, wheeled robot had stability issues when faced with steps, often turning over or getting stuck. The engineers reduced its roll instability by adding a suspension (悬浮) mechanism between each one-way wheel and section of the body. Now able to push itself against a surface when climbing, the snake-bot could pretty much climb steps “as high as 38 percent of its body length”. The team notes that its robot almost matched the speed of the animal that inspired it. But the addition of the suspension does mean that it needs more power to operate than earlier robots from other studies. The engineers will continue to work on the snake-bot with a view to making it capable of taking on more complex barriers. 8. What does Chen Li desire their new robot to do? A. Discover hidden objects easily. B. Cross various barriers smoothly. C. Remove barriers along the way. D. Adapt to changing environments. 9. How does a snake manage to climb steps? A. By increasing speed. B. By lowering its middle. C. By shortening its rear. D. By wriggling more often. 10. Why did engineers use a suspension mechanism? A. To fix the wheels firmly. B. To make the robot lighter. C. To lower energy consumption. D. To keep the robot’s roll stable. 11. What can we infer about the snake-bot from the last paragraph? A. It is faster than any real snake. B. It consumes more energy now. C. It has already replaced earlier models. D. Its suspension system is unnecessary. D Until recently, tiptoeing through floodwater to get to work was just part of daily life for Londoners living around Greenford Tube Station. The ticket hall frequently found itself flooded after a heavy downpour. It left the local council facing the scary prospect of expensive engineering works to solve the problem — that was until beavers (海狸) came along and apparently fixed the problem for free. “Even in situations like on Monday, where there was really heavy rainfall, the area didn’t flood,” said Seniz Mustafa, England’s first urban beaver officer, who witnessed the animals’ handiwork firsthand. “When they put their minds to it, they really get things finished.” Keen to demonstrate how “nature’s engineers” could make London more climate resilient (韧性的), environmentalists were permitted to release five of the animals along the stream running through the land. The Ealing Beaver Project was born. The animals got to work immediately, reengineering the landscape around Greenford with a series of dams, which created a new lake almost overnight. They even knocked down an old dam built by volunteers and replaced it with a better one of their own. “I just can’t believe how much they’ve done in a short period of time; they basically said ‘step aside, humans’,” Mustafa told Positive News. “We do make things a little bit hard for ourselves. It goes to show that we don’t have to use heavy machinery or build infrastructure (基础设施). Nature can do it.” The beavers’ handiwork has not only helped ease flooding; it’s also boosted biodiversity. “We’ve had four new species in the last 11 months alone. One of them is the stickleback, which lives alongside dragonflies and damselflies. We also had redpoll, which is a bird that only really stops off on migration,” said Mustafa. “It’s interesting to see how other wildlife will just resettle and return to a space. “ It’s a boon for humans, too, especially in a city where access to nature is limited. “The benefit to the local community is massive,” said Mustafa. “The animals have completely transformed my view of what beavers can do.” 12. What kind of feeling does Mustafa express in paragraph 2? A. Curiosity. B. Deep sorrow. C. Satisfaction. D. Great anxiety. 13. What impresses Mustafa most regarding beavers in The Ealing Beaver Project? A. Their team spirit. B. Their higher intelligence. C. Their sensitivity. D. Their working efficiency. 14. What does the underlined word “boon” probably mean in the last paragraph? A. Challenge. B. Benefit. C. Reminder. D. Target. 15. What can be the best title for the text? A. Beavers’ Help: A Free Fix for a London Tube Station’s Flooding B. Beavers’ Role: How Nature’s Builders Fight Against Climate Change C. Wildlife Success: How London Is Bringing Animals Back to the City D. So when her message appeared in our family group chat two days before she passed away, none of us truly paused to consider its weight. “Does anyone have a little money to spare? I’d like to buy something important,” she typed. Most of my family scrolled past without a second thought. We were rushing — work, kids, deadlines, endless to-do lists. Grandma was a rock; she never asked for anything, and when she did, it was usually for someone else. We simply assumed she was fine. But something about that word, “important”, caught in my throat. Maybe it was the quiet urgency beneath her usual cheerfulness. That night, I sent her a small amount privately, without questioning why. Her reply came instantly: “Thank you, sweetheart.” And a single red heart emoji (表情符号). The very next morning, she was gone. Peacefully, in her sleep. We were stunned, heartbroken, utterly unprepared. The day after her funeral (葬礼), I went to her small house to help my parents clean. Stepping into her cozy kitchen — still faintly smelling of spices (香料) from countless Sunday dinners — I stopped cold. The counter was covered, not with dishes, but with dozens of small, beautifully wrapped gift boxes. Each was tied with golden ribbon, each tagged (贴标签) with a name written in her graceful, familiar handwriting. Mine was there. My parents’. My cousins’. Even Uncle Robert’s — he hadn’t visited her for five years. Trembling, I opened my box. Inside lay a tiny silver pendant (挂件), a faded black-and-white photo of us from my childhood, and a folded piece of paper. Her handwriting stared back at me: “You were the only one who listened when I needed someone. Don’t ever lose that kindness. It’s the rarest thing we can give.” 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 That was when the full realization started to hit me. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I sat there for hours, surrounded by her quiet generosity. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 10月高二英语 注意事项: 1. 1. 【答案】4. C 5. A 6. D 7. 【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. A. Silence is not emptiness but space for reflection. During a 10-minute silent reading session before class, I can focus on my thoughts and organize my notes. It also helps ease anxiety — especially before exams, a time when a brief pause calms my racing mind. Moreover, silence fosters deeper connections; a shared quiet moment with a friend often speaks louder than words. I believe these pauses will make our campus not only more peaceful but also more productive and mindful. Let’s cherish the power of silence! 【解析】 【导语】本篇书面表达要求考生结合自身在校学习生活的实际,以“我希望日常生活中有更多的___________”为题写一篇短文投稿,内容包括自己的愿望及理由。 【详解】1. 词汇积累 反思:reflection→contemplation 缓解:ease→relieve 培养:foster→cultivate 珍惜:cherish→treasure 2. 句式拓展 简单句变复合句 原句:Silence is not emptiness but space for reflection. 拓展句:Silence is not emptiness but space that allows us to reflect. 【点睛】【高分句型1】It also helps ease anxiety — especially before exams, a time when a brief pause calms my racing mind.(运用了when引导定语从句) 【高分句型2】I believe these pauses will make our campus not only more peaceful but also more productive and mindful.(运用了省略that的宾语从句) 第二节(满分25分) 47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 My grandmother was always the one who gave — never asked. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 That was when the full realization started to hit me. Grandma hadn’t needed the money for herself; she had intended to buy these gifts as her final tokens of love for each family member. She was a giver, not a taker, and rarely made personal requests. That brief message in the group chat was her only quiet appeal, yet most of us — caught up in busy lives — overlooked it. A wave of sharp regret washed over me: If only we had sensed the unspoken urgency beneath her casual words and shown her more genuine care. I sat there for hours, surrounded by her quiet generosity. Those beautifully wrapped boxes were far more than ordinary presents; they were vessels of lasting warmth she had left for the whole family. Every pendant and handwritten note reflected her sincere, selfless affection. Clutching my silver pendant tightly, I took her lesson to heart: true kindness ranks among life’s most precious treasures. Though Grandma has departed, her noble spirit has taken deep root in my mind and inspires me to share that same warmth. 词类激活 行为类 忽视:overlook/ignore/neglect 紧握:clutch/clasp/hold tightly 情绪类 遗憾:regret /remorse 温暖:warmth /affection/tenderness 【点睛】[高分句型1] Those beautifully wrapped boxes were far more than ordinary presents; they were vessels of lasting warmth she had left for the whole family.(运用了省略关系代词的定语从句) [高分句型2] Though Grandma has departed, her noble spirit has taken deep root in my mind and inspires me to share that same warmth.(运用了Though引导的让步状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
