【原文】 W: My mom's a wonderful woman. She was born in Texas in nineteen sixty-eight and worked as a Spanish teacher until 2005. Then two years later, with my father's help, she built a home for children in Honduras. She devoted herself to caring for the poor, both physically and emotionally. However, from 2020 everything was different. My mom was found with Alzheimer's disease, but luckily, she doesn't have Parkinson's disease or any blood pressure disorders, which are common diseases for the elderly. Right now, my mom lives in a special care center that meets the needs of residents who suffer from such medical conditions. Several times a week, a woman comes to bathe her. They often offer activities at the center, and these include singing, exercise and even short trips to the local area. Although my mom isn't able to participate in these as she did in the past, she still enjoys the simple things, holding hands, watching TV shows and taking short walks outside. I used to talk about everything with my mom, but now my conversations with my mom are always short, like last week.

This month’s smartest tech
I’VE GOT NO STRINGS
Eufy says its new model, E15 (out in June), is fully “self-driving” — no wires or pegs (钉子) needed, which could make it a game changer. Aimed at smaller lawns (800 m2 rather than 1,200 m2), the E15 is smart enough to detect trees, borders and even pets while cutting. It’ll even detect when it rains or gets dark and head back to base.
Eufy E15 £1,499, eufy.com

Last month, Nintendo launched the successor to one of the most popular games of all time. The Switch 2 will cost £395 and Mario Kart World £65 in the UK. You just need to pay £429 if you bundle (捆绑购买) them (a set). Buy the Switch 2 alone now and you’ll get a 10% discount. If you buy 2 sets or more, you can enjoy a 20% discount. Any Nintendo console isn’t really about the tech specs, it’s about how it makes you feel when you knock that smug Donkey Kong off his kart on the last corner. We’ll see you in line.
Nintendo Switch 2 From £395, nintendo.com
JUST LOOK AT IT!
While we wouldn’t recommend dropping $10,000 on a record player, we can’t ignore how good this turntable looks. The idea here is that sound and light unite. As the player’s needle dances across the surface of the record, the light shines in harmony. Plus, the turntable itself is held up in the air via magnetic suspension, which, as well as looking unbelievably cool, means it’s isolated from vibrations (震动) to provide maximum musical faithfulness.
Audio Technica Hotaru $10,000 (£7,480), audio-technica.com
31. What is an advantage of E15?
A. It requires a buried wire to operate. B. It can detect obstacles while cutting.
C. It is designed for lawns over 1,200 m2. D. It can predict when it rains or gets dark.
32. How much do you pay for 2 Switches with 2 Mario Kart World the least?
A. £736 B. £617 C. £686 D. £790
33. What helps Audio Technica Hotaru provide maximum musical faithfulness?
A. Its amazing look. B. Its creative design.
C. Its application of vibrations. D. Its combination of sound and light.
【答案】31. B 32. C 33. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇应用文,文章介绍本月三款智能科技产品(Eufy E15自动割草机、任天堂 Switch 2游戏机及配套游戏、Audio Technica Hotaru唱片机)的特点、价格及购买优惠等信息。

Katherine Johnson, a hero to American space travel and exploration, was born on Aug. 26, 1918, in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Her genius for math and science was evident early and her parents arranged for her and her siblings’ education to be a priority.
Katherine graduated from high school at only 14 and attended West Virginia State College, a historically Black college. When West Virginia decided to quietly integrate its graduate schools in 1939, West Virginia State’s president, Dr. John W. Davis, selected her and two men to be the first Black students offered spots at the state’s flagship school, West Virginia University.
In 1953, in a time of racial separation, she started a job as a human “computer” with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which later developed into NASA. She worked in the West Area Computing section at Langley Research Center on a team headed by fellow West Virginian Dorothy Vaughan. This turned into a permanent position and set the course for Katherine’s role in space exploration.
In 1960, she and engineer Ted Skopinski coauthored Determination of Azimuth Angle at Burnout for Placing a Satellite Over a Selected Earth Position, a report laying out the equations (方程式) describing an orbital spaceflight in which the landing position of the spacecraft is specified. It was the first time a woman in the Flight Research Division had received credit as an author of a research report.
Her expertise was key to John Glenn’s orbit around Earth in 1962, with Glenn putting much of his confidence in Katherine to make the mission a success. As a part of the preflight checklist, Glenn asked engineers to “get the girl” — Johnson — to run the same numbers through the same equations that had been programmed into the computer, but by hand, on her desktop mechanical calculating machine. “If she says they’re good,” Katherine Johnson remembered the astronaut saying, “then I’m ready to go.”
34. What can we learn about Katherine Johnson’s life experience?
A. Her parents attached great importance to her education.
B. She was the only Black student to enter West Virginia University in 1939.
C. She took the lead of the West Area Computing section.
D. She joined the NACA organization after NASA had been founded.
35. Why does the writer quote John Glenn’s words in the last paragraph?
A. To explain Johnson’s hand calculation was tough.
B. To highlight John Glenn was a strict mission leader.
C. To prove Johnson’s hand calculations were reliable.
D. To illustrate the computer’s data was not trustworthy.
36. Which of the following can best describe Katherine Johnson?
A. Modest and sociable. B. Talented and diligent.
C. Stubborn and hardworking. D. Considerate and cooperative.
37. What is the best title for the text?
A. Katherine Johnson: A Lifetime of Educational Pursuits
B. The Story of a “Computer”: Katherine Johnson’s Early Life at NASA
C. Katherine Johnson: A Pioneering Force in Space Exploration
D. Mathematics: The Key to John Glenn’s Historic Space Flight
【答案】34. A 35. C 36. B 37. C

Vacations are being redefined to improve your wellness experiences. The new buzzword is “sleep tourism” and the focus is on ensuring that you rest well at night and actually return from your vacation feeling refreshed.
When away, vacationers traditionally like to make use of every second of the day. They rush from site to site, eat meals at all hours of the day, and treat themselves at night. And when finally returning to their hotel rooms at night, they find it hard to sleep. Besides, downtown hotels may be centrally located, with noisy traffic and flashing city lights pervading (弥漫). Also, many people simply do not sleep well when away from their own beds. All these factors lead to pain, allergies and hormonal issues, making sleep challenging.
“Sleep tourism” addresses these issues and more. Special sleep suites have been thoughtfully designed to offer quiet and darkness. Hotels are investing in artificial intelligence mattresses (床垫) that adjust temperature and have cushions to relieve pressure points. The mattresses can also track sleep statistics and offer vacationers feedback on their sleep patterns.
Sleep suites are a huge advance in tourism and are now found in wellness hotels around the world. Each offers different ways of inducing sleep, according to Condé Nast Traveler. Many provide a menu of relaxing teas and a tailored bed. No matter which sleep suite you choose, the goal is to sleep well so you can improve your health and well-being. Sinking into a comfortable bed should be the best part of a trip!
The hope is that more hotels adapt to this wellness trend and return to the original purpose of a hotel room, which is sleep! Now you can tour around by day and have sweet dreams by night.
38. According to the text, what is the new trend in vacationing?
A. Partying all night. B. Eating at special hours.
C. Sleeping well on holiday. D. Rushing from site to site.
39. How do sleep suites improve the sleep experience for guests?
A. By serving a wide variety of food.
B. By introducing mattresses with AI technology.
C. By offering in-room entertainment systems.
D. By ensuring complete darkness in the rooms.
40. The underlined word “inducing” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.
A. promoting. B. preventing. C. causing. D. affecting.
41. What can we infer about the future of hotels from the passage?
A. All hotels will have artificial intelligence mattresses.
B. Traditional hotels will disappear because of “sleep tourism”.
C. More hotels will focus on providing better sleep experiences.
D. Downtown hotels will move to quieter areas to avoid traffic noise.
【答案】38. C 39. B 40. A 41. C

Does a Robot Need a School?
At a recent technology exhibition in Fuzhou, the largest crowds gathered not around the dancing humanoid robots, but around a worker wearing a VR headset and teaching a robot how to pick up a paper cup. For Chen Yishi, CEO of Joyful Embodied, this scene perfectly illustrated the real battleground in the AI race: it is not fancy hardware, but data.
“We are building a school for robots,” Chen explained. His company plans to construct a 3,000-square-meter training ground where humanoid, four-legged and wheeled robots will perform everyday tasks such as stacking cups, cleaning tables, sorting objects, and even folding clothes. Human operators will use VR gear and motion-control devices to guide the robots through thousands of repetitive movements from a distance. As the robots work, cameras and sensors record every angle, joint movement, pressure point, and force feedback, generating what Chen calls “high-quality fuel” for future AI systems.
“Without real-world data, even the most advanced large models are just empty brains,” Chen said. “Robots do not learn through assumptions. Every tiny movement — from grasping a cup to adjusting grip strength — has to be taught through data.” He added that each robot would operate around the clock, continuously producing fresh training examples. Unlike text or image data, physical interaction data is much harder to collect because it requires real hardware, real environments, and real-time human guidance.
This effort marks a significant shift in China’s AI industry — moving beyond chatbots toward embodied intelligence (具身智能), which refers to AI systems housed in physical machines capable of acting in real environments. Earlier this year, embodied AI was officially included in China’s Government Work Report as a strategic future industry, alongside other priorities like quantum computing and biotechnology.
While billions of dollars have been poured into robot hardware, experts now argue that high-quality training data has become the scarcest strategic resource. Unlike images or text, which can be easily copied from the internet, physical interaction data must be generated through real-world operations. Chen believes the industry’s economics will increasingly depend on data rather than hardware alone. “High-quality embodied AI training data are already priced by the hour,” he noted. According to Chen, each continuously operating robot in his company’s data center creates demand for roughly three technical jobs, including data annotation, algorithm optimization, and system maintenance. “The competition is no longer just about whose robot can walk or dance,” Chen concluded. “The real question is: whose robot can truly work.”
42. What did the scene at the Fuzhou exhibition suggest according to Chen Yishi?
A. Humanoid robots are less appealing than expected.
B. The key to AI development lies in data rather than hardware.
C. VR technology has become more advanced than ever before.
D. Most people prefer watching robots perform simple tasks.
43. In paragraph 3, the phrase empty brains most likely refers to large models that ____.
A. lack sufficient real-world training data
B. are too small to store complex information
C. cannot be used in physical machines
D. produce too many assumptions on their own
44. Based on the last two paragraphs, what can be inferred about the current state of the robotics industry?
A. The value of robot hardware has significantly decreased due to data pricing.
B. The shift toward data-driven competition creates more job opportunities.
C. Most companies have realized that hardware is no longer a priority.
D. The Chinese government’s policy has made data collection less expensive.
45. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce a new company and its robot training center.
B. To compare different kinds of robots in the AI industry.
C. To argue that training data is becoming the core of AI robotics.
D. To explain how embodied intelligence is applied in factories.

When people first come across the Law of Attraction (吸引力法则), their hearts and minds often immediately think of one specific thing that they’d love to achieve in their lives. However, the next thought is often “But I can’t do that”. You may come up with all kinds of excuses. ____46____Here are the reasons why you should believe you can use the Law of Attraction to obtain whatever you want.
Small steps create big changes. One of the most common reasons for abandoning dreams is that they simply seem too huge to realize. Usually it’s manageable to think of following your dream as taking a series of significant but small steps. ____47____ Then look at each of them. Not so unrealistic now, is it?
____48____ When people are interviewed on their deathbeds or write about their lives in autobiographies (自传), it is often observed that major regrets tend to relate to things that were not done. In older age, it’s likely that you will be uncomfortable with the idea that you didn’t even try to do the thing that you loved or attempt to obtain what you truly wanted.____49____But you don’t ever need to feel this way! Make today the first day of your new journey towards avoiding regret.
Steps towards your dream are never backwards steps. Another common worry is that if you follow your dreams, you’ll be “taking steps back”.____50____ However, what looks like backward steps in your old life can more productively and accurately be seen as forwarding steps in the brand new life you’re creating.

With the rapid development of technology, AI is capable of producing paintings and articles within a short time, which has caused a heated debate.
Some people argue that AI will kill human creativity. They fear that people may simply rely on AI rather than create works on their own. Others hold the opposite view that AI can serve as an inspiration source and stimulate our new ideas.
From my perspective, AI is nothing more than a useful tool. It can offer rich materials for creation, yet true creativity comes from human feelings and thoughts. We should take advantage of AI instead of letting it replace human creation.

D
