B
THE TIME MACHINE (Adapted)
It was at ten o’clock today that the first of all Time Machines began its career. I gave it a last check, and sat myself in the leather seat. I pushed the starting lever on the main panel forwards an inch then immediately backwards again. Looking around, I saw my laboratory exactly as before. Had anything happened? I thought my mind had tricked me. Then I saw the clock. A moment before, it was a minute or so past ten; now it was nearly half past three!
I drew a breath, gripped the lever and pushed it forwards. The laboratory went hazy around me. My niece came in to fetch something, maybe her handkerchief, apparently without seeing me. It probably took her a minute, but to me she moved like a rocket! I pushed the lever further. Night came as if a lamp was being turned out, and in another moment came the day. Tomorrow night came, then skipped to day, again and again, faster and faster still.
It is hard to explain the strange and unpleasant feeling of time travelling. It felt like I was being driven fast on a winding road. As my pace grew faster, the walls of the laboratory fell away, and I was left in the open air. The sun and moon looked as if they were being thrown across the sky, but soon there was division between night and day. Around me I saw trees growing like puffs of smoke; they grew, spread, and died in moments. I saw huge buildings rise up, then disappear like in a dream. The whole surface of the earth was being changed, melting and flowing before my eyes. I calculated that I was being pushed through time at hundreds of years a minute.
I had a strong urge to look at the random things that were being flashed before my eyes! I had thought about the risk of stopping the Time Machine many times. So long as I travelled at maximum speed, it didn’t matter. But if I stopped and the same space was being occupied by something else, we would be forced together and explode like a bomb! Like an impatient fool, I pulled the lever backwards hard. With a sudden jolt, the Time Machine was flipped on its side, and I was thrown through the air.
I was stunned for a moment, and then heard the sound of thunder. I was sitting in the rain in some mud next to the machine. “A fine welcome,” I said, “for a man who has travelled thousands of years to be here!”
56. What happened to the Time Traveller’s niece?
A. She moved like a rocket in the lab.
B. She came to help the Time Traveller.
C. She saw the Time Traveller travel in the time machine.
D. She was looking for something in the lab for a little while.
57. Why did the Time Traveller feel strange and unpleasant during the time travel?
A. The Time Machine had been poorly designed.
B. He was travelling through time at such a high speed.
C. He suffered from the time lag.
D. He was feeling the time travel sick.
58. Why was the Time Traveller worried about stopping the machine?
A. Because he would lose control of the machine.
B. Because the machine would explode as a bomb.
C. Because the machine was so fast that he couldn’t stop it.
D. Because the same space might be possessed by other things and they would all explode.
59. What did the Time Traveller meet when he stopped?
A. A dinosaur. B. A storm.
C. A volcano. D. An explosion of a bomb.
60. What order is the passage written in?
A. Time. B. Places.
C. The process of events. D. Feelings.
D 57. B 58. D 59. B 60. C

根据文章第二段中“The laboratory went hazy around me. My niece came in to fetch something, maybe her handkerchief, apparently without seeing me. It probably took her a minute, but to me she moved like a rocket!(实验室里一片模糊,我周围都看不清了。我的侄女进来取东西,可能是手帕,但显然没看见我。这件事大概只花了她一分钟,可对我来说,她移动的速度就像火箭一样!)”可知,时间旅行者的侄女在实验室里找了一会儿东西。
【57题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“It is hard to explain the strange and unpleasant feeling of time travelling. I calculated that I was being pushed through time at hundreds of years a minute.(很难解释这种奇异而令人不快的时空穿梭感。
根据文章倒数第二段中“But if I stopped and the same space was being occupied by something else, we would be forced together and explode like a bomb!(但如果我停下,而同一空间又被其他东西占据,我们就会被迫在一起,像炸弹一样爆炸!)”
根据文章最后一段“I was stunned for a moment, and then heard the sound of thunder.(我愣了一下,然后听到了雷声。)”
C
The human mind is astonishing. We can solve complex problems, perform calculations, create art, and process language effortlessly. We humans are the smartest of all, or so we think…
However, recent studies reveal how easily context can mislead us. Consider the Müller-Lyer illusion (错觉): equal-length lines look different if one has outward-pointing arrows and the other has inward-pointing arrows. Similarly, three identical-sized runners positioned along a visual path seem to vary in size.
Before you conclude that being fooled is reserved only for visual illusions, let me give the example of Belinda: an outspoken philosophy student, deeply concerned with sustainability, biodiversity, and global warming. Is Belinda more likely: a) a top student, or b) a top student and vegetarian? Many people choose the second, because the context of being vegetarian seems to fit the image of someone deeply concerned with sustainability. But statistically, the first is more likely. There are always more top students than vegetarian top students.
Yet for all its potential to trick, context more often serves as our mental shortcut to efficient understanding. Rather than memorizing every possible meaning of words and sentence patterns, we constantly use surrounding information to fill gaps. As linguist J. R. Firth observed, “You shall know a word by the company it keeps.” For example, in the sentence “My daughter was ferliamated when she got a pet dog,” we can guess that “ferliamated” means “excited”, even if the word doesn’t exist.
This two-sided nature of context leads us to an important discovery about how our minds work. While we can discuss anything at any time in any context, it seems more likely that we talk about the things whose meaning lies in the same context. This offers exciting possibilities for understanding both the human mind and language itself-showing how communication depends not just on our thinking, but equally on how language is built to work with context.
61. Which image matches the description of the “runners” illusion?
A. B.
C. D.
62. Why do people often choose option (b) in the Belinda example?
A. Personalities affect decision-making.
B. Extra details disturb their logical thinking.
C. Top students often make better choices.
D. Personal experiences lead to their false judgment.
63. How do Firth’s quote and the “ferliamated” example support the author’s point?
A. They prove that words can have random meanings.
B. They explain why memorizing words isn’t a shortcut.
C. They demonstrate what dictionaries can’t really clarify.
D. They show how context contributes to word understanding.
64. Which of the following best summarizes the author’s view on context?
A. Context is generally harmful to logical thinking.
B. Context is useless in understanding new words.
C. Context can both mislead and aid understanding.
D. Context should be avoided in serious discussions.
65. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The value of the research into context.
B. The complex nature of context.
C. The topics discussed within the same context.
D. The link between context and mind.
B 62. B 63. D 64. C 65. A
根据第二段“However, recent studies reveal how easily context can mislead us. Consider the Müller-Lyer illusion (错觉): equal-length lines look different if one has outward-pointing arrows and the other has inward-pointing arrows. Similarly, three identical-sized runners positioned along a visual path seem to vary in size.(然而,最近的研究表明,语境很容易误导我们。
根据第三段“Before you conclude that being fooled is reserved only for visual illusions, let me give the example of Belinda: an outspoken philosophy student, deeply concerned with sustainability, biodiversity, and global warming. Is Belinda more likely: a) a top student, or b) a top student and vegetarian? Many people choose the second, because the context of being vegetarian seems to fit the image of someone deeply concerned with sustainability. But statistically, the first is more likely. There are always more top students than vegetarian top students.(在你认为被愚弄的情况仅限于视觉错觉之前,请让我以贝琳达为例来说明一下:她是一位直言不讳的哲学专业学生,对可持续性、生物多样性和全球变暖问题非常关注。贝琳达更有可能是:a)一名优秀学生,还是 b)一名优秀学生并且是素食者?很多人会选择后者,因为素食者的形象似乎与对可持续性问题的深切关注相契合。但从统计学角度来看,第一种情况更有可能发生。优秀学生总是比素食的优秀学生更多)”可知,在Belinda的例子中,人们往往选择选项(b)是因为丰富的细节覆盖了他们的逻辑思维。故选B。
【63题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“As linguist J. R. Firth observed, “You shall know a word by the company it keeps.” For example, in the sentence “My daughter was ferliamated when she got a pet dog,” we can guess that “ferliamated” means “excited”, even if the word doesn’t exist.(正如语言学家 J. R. 弗斯所指出的那样:“你可以通过一个词所结交的伙伴来了解这个词。”例如,在句子“我女儿得到一只宠物狗时她ferliamated”中,即便“ferliamated”这个词并不存在,我们也能推断出它的意思是“兴奋的”)”可知,Firth的引言和ferliamated例子支持作者的观点,即,展示了语境如何帮助理解单词。故选D。
【64题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Yet for all its potential to trick, context more often serves as our mental shortcut to efficient understanding.(然而,尽管语境具有诸多误导性,但它往往却成为我们进行高效理解的思维捷径)”可知,作者认为,语境既可能误导理解,也可能有助于理解。
根据最后一段“This two-sided nature of context leads us to an important discovery about how our minds work. While we can discuss anything at any time in any context, it seems more likely that we talk about the things whose meaning lies in the same context. This offers exciting possibilities for understanding both the human mind and language itself — showing how communication depends not just on our thinking, but equally on how language is built to work with context.(这种上下文的双重特性促使我们有了一个关于人类思维运作方式的重要发现。尽管我们可以在任何情境下讨论任何内容,但似乎更有可能的是,我们会谈论那些在其意义方面与当前情境相契合的事物。这为理解人类思维和语言本身提供了令人兴奋的可能性——表明交流不仅取决于我们的思考,还取决于语言如何与情境相匹配以发挥作用)”可知,最后一段主要讲关于语境研究的价值。故选A。
D
The social media platform Instagram once made headlines for limiting likes in an effort to reduce the comparisons and hurt feelings resulting from attaching popularity to sharing content. But do these efforts resolve mental health issues, or are they simply applying a band-aid to a wound?
It’s a small step in the right direction, says Jacqueline Sperling, a psychologist who works with youth who experience anxiety disorders. “Even if you remove the likes, there continue to be opportunities for comparisons and feedback. People still can compare themselves to others, and people still can post comments.”
Social platforms are designed to be addictive and are related to anxiety, depression, and even physical ailments (病痛).This puts a large amount of the population at an increased risk of feeling anxious, depressed, or ill over their social media use. But what makes users come back for more even when it can literally make them feel sick?
“When the outcome is unpredictable, the behavior is more likely to repeat. Think of a slot machine (老虎机): if game players knew they were never going to get money by playing the game, then they never would play,” says Sperling. “The idea of a potential future reward keeps the machines in use. The same goes for social media sites. One does not know how many likes a picture will get, who will like the picture, and when the picture will receive likes. The unknown outcome and the possibility of a desired outcome can keep users engaged with the sites.”
FOMO — fear of missing out — also impacts the youth greatly. Teenagers hope to keep track of friends’ activities. If everyone else is using social media sites, and if you don’t join in, there’s concern that you’ll miss chats, jokes, connections, or invitations. Missing experiences can create anxiety and depression. When people look online and see they’re excluded from an activity, it can affect thoughts and feelings, and can affect them physically.
In addition to limiting likes, as Instagram has done, Sperling suggests social platforms consider decreasing mass sharing. They might function more as messaging services by highlighting one-on-one communications. Regardless of how likely social media giants are to change their ways, though, individuals can take control of their own behavior.
66. What does Sperling think of Instagram’s measure?
A. It’s strict. B. It’s limited.
C. It’s objective. D. It’s conservative.
67. What is probably the major reason for social media addiction?
A. Need for self-expression.
B. Desire for constant recognition.
C. Expectation of possible surprises.
D. Lack of interest in real-life activities.
68. What does Sperling advise social platforms to do in the last paragraph?
A. Restrict their service scales.
B. Decrease one-on-one interactions
C. Limit the time users spend on them.
D. Shift the focus from sharing to messaging.
69. What might the author continue talking about?
A. Redesign of social media platforms.
B. Changes made by social media giants.
C. Strategies for individuals’ self-control.
D. Impact of social media on mental health.
70. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. To criticize Instagram’s ineffective measure of hiding likes.
B. To analyze the causes of social media addiction and propose solutions.
C. To explain how FOMO affects teenagers’ mental health.
D. To prove that social media is harmful to people’s physical health.
B 67. C 68. D 69. C 70. B
根据文章第二段内容“It’s a small step in the right direction, says Jacqueline Sperling, a psychologist who works with youth who experience anxiety disorders. “Even if you remove the likes, there continue to be opportunities for comparisons and feedback. People still can compare themselves to others, and people still can post comments.” (心理学家杰奎琳·斯珀林表示,这只是朝着正确方向迈出的一小步。“即使你取消了点赞,比较和反馈的机会依然存在。人们仍然可以把自己和别人比较,也仍然可以发表评论。”)”可知,她这为这一措施有一定积极意义,但作用有限。
【67题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段第一句“When the outcome is unpredictable, the behavior is more likely to repeat. (当结果不可预测时,行为更容易重复。)”以及最后两句“One does not know how many likes a picture will get, who will like the picture, and when the picture will receive likes. The unknown outcome and the possibility of a desired outcome can keep users engaged with the sites. (人们不知道一张图片会收到多少点赞、谁会喜欢它、它何时会得到点赞。未知的结果和期待的结果出现的可能性会让用户沉迷于这些网站。)”可知,社交媒体成瘾的主要原因是用户对可能的意外惊喜,如点赞数量、点赞者、点赞时间等抱有期待。
【68题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段前两句“In addition to limiting likes, as Instagram has done, Sperling suggests social platforms consider decreasing mass sharing. They might function more as messaging services by highlighting one-on-one communications. (除了像Instagram那样限制点赞之外,斯珀林还建议社交平台考虑减少大规模分享。通过强调一对一的交流,它们或许可以更像通讯服务那样运作。)”可知,她建议社交平台将重点从分享转向通讯功能。
【69题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段最后一句“Regardless of how likely social media giants are to change their ways, though, individuals can take control of their own behavior.
Last summer, my tech-fan cousin Alex bought an advanced self-driving car.
One misty evening, as we drove on a narrow and winding cliff-side road, Alex, full of confidence, turned on the self-driving mode. At that time, I was nervous, holding the armrest tightly, while Alex casually scrolled (滚屏) through social media, completely ignoring the increasingly dangerous road conditions. Suddenly, a strong deer appeared in the headlights. At that critical moment, the car’s sensors, which had been failing unnoticed, went wrong. Instead of braking, the car sped towards the deer. Alex, realizing the danger at the last second, tried to reach for the steering wheel, but it was too late. The car crashed into the deer, and we were shaken hard. Surprisingly, the deer ran into the woods, unhurt. We sat in the damaged car, shocked.
This accident made me reflect on technology’s issues. In healthcare, AI robots, sometimes, for speed, misread symptoms, causing incorrect diagnoses. In education, speed-focused AI graders may score essays by keywords, missing emotional depth in student stories — like a child writing of sadness, whose words become data, not cries for sympathy. In other words, AI prioritizes speed over correct diagnosis or students’ emotional expressions. Philosopher Sherry Turkle’s words make sense — “We’re sacrificing exactness and sympathy for efficiency.”
But this doesn’t mean we should reject technology. We should use it carefully and wisely. Just like a compass helps a sailor but doesn’t replace his skills, technology should help our judgment, not take over. Doctors could use AI technology as an extra opinion, and compare it with their own knowledge. Teachers can use AI technology to analyze student data and adjust lessons with their own insights, and not to let algorithms (算法) control teaching.
That night, standing by the broken car, I realized that technology, for all its power, depends on us. Over-reliance on it weakens our ability to adapt and think. In the end, we, not machines, should shape the future.
71. How did the author and Alex feel during the drive before the accident? (no more than 10 words)
_____________________________________________________________________________
72. What contributed to the accident of the self-driving car according to the Paragraph 2? (no more than 10 words)
_____________________________________________________________________________
73. What is the meaning of the underlined part in Paragraph 3? (no more than 10 words)
_____________________________________________________________________________
74. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4? (no more than 10 words)
_____________________________________________________________________________
75. Do you consider AI technology as a tool to make important decisions in our lives? Please explain in your own words. (no more than 25 words)
_____________________________________________________________________________
71. The author felt nervous and Alex felt relaxed.
72. The car’s sensor failure and Alex’s inattention/distraction.
73. We are giving up accuracy and understanding others for speed. / We are choosing speed over accuracy and understanding others.
74. We should use technology carefully and wisely.
75. No. AI lacks human judgment and sympathy, which is crucial in decision-making. It should be human beings who make their own decisions about their future. / Yes. AI can offer data-driven insights to enhance the quality of important decisions.
根据第二段中“At that time, I was nervous, holding the armrest tightly, while Alex casually scrolled (滚屏) through social media, completely ignoring the increasingly dangerous road conditions. Suddenly, a strong deer appeared in the headlights. At that critical moment, the car’s sensors, which had been failing unnoticed, went wrong.(当时,我紧张极了,双手紧紧抓着扶手,而Alex却漫不经心地刷着社交媒体,完全无视愈发危险的路况。突然,一只体型健壮的鹿出现在车灯照射的范围内。就在这千钧一发之际,汽车那此前一直未被察觉地出现故障的传感器彻底失灵了)”以及第三段“This accident made me reflect on technology’s issues.(这次事故让我反思科技的问题)”可知,事故发生前作者因担忧潜在危险而紧张,Alex却因过度信任自动驾驶技术而放松。故答案为The author felt nervous and Alex felt relaxed.
根据第二段中“At that time, I was nervous, holding the armrest tightly, while Alex casually scrolled (滚屏) through social media, completely ignoring the increasingly dangerous road conditions. Suddenly, a strong deer appeared in the headlights. At that critical moment, the car’s sensors, which had been failing unnoticed, went wrong.( 当时,我紧张极了,双手紧紧抓着扶手,而Alex却漫不经心地刷着社交媒体,完全无视愈发危险的路况。突然,一只体型健壮的鹿出现在车灯照射的范围内。就在这千钧一发之际,汽车那此前一直未被察觉地出现故障的传感器彻底失灵了)”可知,事故的直接原因是传感器故障与驾驶者分心。故答案为The car’s sensor failure and Alex’s inattention/distraction.
根据第三段中“In healthcare, AI robots, sometimes, for speed, misread symptoms, causing incorrect diagnoses.(在医疗保健领域,人工智能机器人有时会为了速度而误读症状,导致错误的诊断)”以及“In education, speed-focused AI graders may score essays by keywords, missing emotional depth in student stories — like a child writing of sadness, whose words become data, not cries for sympathy.(在教育领域,那些以速度为导向的人工智能评分系统可能仅通过关键词来评判作文,从而忽略了学生故事中的情感深度——比如一个孩子写下关于悲伤的内容时,其文字在AI眼中只是数据,而非渴望共鸣的呼喊)”可知,AI在医疗和教育中 优先速度而非正确性 ,并且也会忽略情感”。 We are giving up accuracy and understanding others for speed/We are choosing speed over accuracy and understanding others。
根据第四段中“We should use it carefully and wisely. Just like a compass helps a sailor but doesn’t replace his skills, technology should help our judgment, not take over. Doctors could use AI technology as an extra opinion, and compare it with their own knowledge. Teachers can use AI technology to analyze student data and adjust lessons with their own insights, and not to let algorithms We should use technology carefully and wisely.
No. AI lacks human judgment and sympathy, which is crucial in decision-making. It should be human beings who make their own decisions about their future./Yes. AI can offer data-driven insights to enhance the quality of important decisions.

Good morning, dear friends. My name is Li Jin.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Thank you.
Good morning, dear friends. My name is Li Jin.
As the picture vividly shows, a student stands at a crossroads, with four signs pointing in different directions: Parents’ Advice, Peer Influence, Social Trends and Inner Voice. Each represents a different force shaping our life choices. Faced with these options, I choose to follow my Inner Voice.
There are two main reasons behind my decision. First, my inner voice reflects my true passions and strengths. Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by environmental science. Though my parents suggested I study finance, and my peers often talk about popular majors like computer science, I know that protecting nature is what truly drives me. Choosing my passion means I will stay motivated even when challenges arise. Second, following my inner voice helps me take responsibility for my own life. If I choose a path based on others’ expectations, I might end up feeling unfulfilled and regretful. Taking charge of my choices allows me to grow as an independent person, learning from both successes and mistakes along the way.
I’m curious to hear about your experiences. What voices do you listen to when making big decisions? Do you have any stories about choosing your own path? I would love to hear your thoughts!
Thank you.
