Yang Zhenning, a world-famous physicist and Nobel Prize winner, passed away in Beijing on October 18, 2025. He was a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a professor at Tsinghua University. Tsinghua University wrote about his death and described him as “immortal”, for his influence on science and education will last forever.
Born in 1922 in Hefei, Anhui Province, Yang moved to Beijing with his family in 1929. His university studies began at the National Southwestern Associated University in 1938, followed by a master’s degree (硕士学位) from Tsinghua University in 1944. The next year, he went to the United States for further study, receiving a PhD from the University of Chicago in 1948.
The year 1957 saw Yang and his partner win the Nobel Prize in Physics. Their discovery about how very small particles (粒子) behave changed scientists’ understanding of particle physics.
From 1949 to 1966, Yang worked at Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study, then taught at the State University of New York until 1999. He returned to China often, serving as a visiting professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong since 1986 and helping build Tsinghua’s advanced studies program.
He cared deeply for his country, developing science education and exchange between China and the United States. His first visit to China in 1971 encouraged many overseas Chinese researchers to return. He also raised money to support Chinese students studying abroad.

The Ministry of Education clearly said that China encourages schools to carry out spring and autumn holidays for primary and secondary school students, while putting into practice the off-peak paid leave system for workers. As a hot topic, the rule has been tested in provinces such as Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Sichuan.
These short holidays bring many benefits to students. They can lower stress and help students keep healthy both in body and mind. With nice and comfortable weather, students can go out of classrooms to take part in activities, including farming experiences, nature watching, and local culture learning. In this way, book knowledge is turned into real-life experience.
The holidays also bring good points to families. Off-peak leave allows parents to spend a happy time with their children at lower costs, avoiding the crowds during busy travel seasons. Many families choose to travel, visit relatives, or go to museums together, making family ties closer. At the same time, the holidays help develop local tourism and the economy, making a win-win situation for education and tourism.
However, there are still difficulties in carrying out these rules. The main problem is that many working parents cannot look after their children during the holidays. To solve this, many schools offer childcare services with colourful activities, and local communities offer more activities for students. The holidays can also be arranged flexibly according to local situations.
In short, spring and autumn holidays are an important educational change. They show a turn from exam-centred education to a focus on all-round development. If families, schools, and society work together, these holidays will help students grow in a healthier and more meaningful way.
12. What does the underlined word “off-peak” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. The same time as usual.
B. Only during summer vacation.
C. During the busiest travelling season.
D. A different time from the busy seasons.
13. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. All provinces in China must follow the rule right away.
B. The “off-peak paid leave” system will solve all the problems for parents.
C. The development of local tourism and economy depends on the new rule.
D. The rule will play an important role in helping students develop in many ways.
14. What is the writer’s attitude towards the spring and autumn holidays?
A. Calm and unhappy. B. Doubtful and worried.
C. Supportive and hopeful. D. Uninterested and careless.
15. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

A. B. C. D.
D 13. D 14. C 15. B

第一段提到“Germans are known for their beers and soccer. But do you know that they also like to save money?”,选项D“Saving has a long history in Germany.”引出储蓄的历史话题,与后文“The world’s first savings bank opened in 1778 in Hamburg”形成衔接,说明德国储蓄传统由来已久。
第二段提到“German families have saved more than 8 percent of their income over the last 20 years, according to OECD data.”,选项C“This makes them the top savers in the world.”
第三段提到“According to the Financial Times, being careful with money is part of the image that Germans have of themselves. They honestly believe that saving money is a virtue”,这是在解释德国人储蓄的原因,选项B“What is the reason Germans save money?”

后文“It changed me as well.”
后文直接提到“How could my sister sing in front of the school?”,明确点明了姐姐的表演形式是唱歌,应填sing。
后文“How could my sister sing in front of the school? I must stop this happening”提到作者立刻想要阻止姐姐登台,完全没想到患病、连看人都不敢直视的姐姐会主动提出要在全校面前唱歌,应填shocked。
going over“复习”、talking about“讨论”、dreaming of“梦想”都不符合场景。
后文直接提到“she could sing so beautifully!”,说明姐姐的歌声十分优美,应填beautiful。
根据“I felt really sorry—she could sing so beautifully! How could I have doubted her abilities?”,且前文作者一直质疑姐姐的能力,觉得她登台只会出丑,结果她的演唱格外动人,作者才意识到之前的想法完全是错的,应填wrong。
后文“I decided to love her without any conditions.”

In the past, I used to be lazy and I wasted much time on computer games. I seldom finished my homework on time. My English teacher inspired me to make changes. She told me the importance of self-improvement. Now I plan my time carefully and spend more time reading useful books. I have made great progress in my lessons and formed good living habits.
I am happy with these changes. They help me become a better person and I will keep moving forward all the time.
