However, when Wang Lin entered high school, things changed. Her classmates thought puppetry was old-fashioned and made fun of her hobby. “They said it was for old people, not for teenagers,” she recalls. Slowly, Wang Lin felt less close to puppetry and stopped practicing for almost two years.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the way we live, work, and play. Simply put, AI refers to machines or computer systems that can do jobs needing human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, and decision-making. Let’s see how AI influences our lives!
Smart Assistants
Have you ever asked Siri or Alexa for help? These voice-controlled assistants use AI to understand your questions and provide answers. They can play music, set reminders, or even tell jokes. AI makes them “smart” by letting them learn from millions of talks.
Healthcare Innovations (创新)
AI helps doctors check diseases faster. For example, AI systems can read X-ray images to find out signs of illnesses. Some hospitals also use robots powered by AI to send medicines or help take care of patients.
Education Tools
AI is transforming education too! Learning apps like Duolingo use AI to create proper lessons. If a student has difficulty in learning English, the app changes the difficulty level and offers more practice. This makes learning easier and more fun.
Transportation Improvements
Self-driving cars are no longer science fiction. Companies like Tesla use AI to help cars “see” the road, stay away from obstacles (障碍物), and follow traffic rules. In the future, AI might cut down accidents caused by human mistakes.
★
While AI brings many good points, it also raises questions. For example, will AI take the place of humans? How do we protect personal information? Scientists are working hard to solve these problems.
In short, AI is like a helpful friend that makes life easier and safer. By understanding it more, we can use AI to build a better world!
36. What makes smart assistants “smart”?
A. Their skill in understanding people’s feelings.
B. Their ability to follow orders without question.
C. The AI technology that allows them to learn from conversations.
D. The strong batteries and wonderful computer parts they have.

Confucius was a great thinker and teacher in ancient China. He was born in Qufu, capital of the state of Lu. He acted as an official there. But he was perhaps a better thinker than he was an official, and he ended up having to leave the state of Lu. He spent 13 years travelling around the other states, spreading his ideas. In his last few years, he returned to Qufu where he spent the rest of his life teaching. His teachings were recorded by his followers in a book called Lunyu.
Confucius’ teachings formed the base of Chinese thought. Confucius thought everyone should develop virtues (美德) and always do the right thing. Confucius’ thought is considered to have been the necessity of Chinese thought.
To help people understand how to behave towards others, he taught five virtues accepted by all Chinese. They are ren (kindness, charity), yi (fairness), li (ceremony, tradition), zhi (knowledge), and xin (trust). Another virtue is xiao. Xiao is the duties a person has to their parents. It means loving, respecting, obeying, and taking care of one’s parents in their old age. Xiao forms the base of a peaceful society. And he is the final goal according to his thought. It means social peace.
It is clear that Confucius’ thought will continue to be a necessary part of Chinese culture. And it will continue to do something good to the development of China and even the whole world.
