Unit 6 See the world
Wrap up&Let’s explore 第六课 (教学设计)
I. Teaching Aims
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Review and use the key words and sentences of the unit about places, travel and cultural differences.
2. Answer the eight questions on "The travel wheel" and finish the "Check it" self-assessment.
3. Read the short text "Famous travellers" about Zhang Qian and Marco Polo and answer the questions.
4. Talk about famous travellers and show interest in Chinese history and world culture.
II. Key and Difficult Points
Key points: Review the words and sentences of the unit (places, travel, cultural differences) and use them to answer the questions on the travel wheel.
Difficult points: Understand the new words in the reading text (traveller, desert, Silk Road, BCE, Europe) and say something about Zhang Qian and Marco Polo in complete sentences.
III. Teaching Tools
Multimedia courseware, the audio of the reading text, pictures of Zhang Qian, Marco Polo and the Silk Road, word cards, the "Check it" worksheet, the textbook.
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
T shows a map and asks, "In this unit we have seen many places. What do you remember?" Students say some countries and places they have learned.
[Purpose] Activate the words of the unit and lead into the review.
Step 2 The travel wheel
T draws "The travel wheel" on the blackboard. Students pick or spin to one question (Q1-Q8) and answer it. T gives help and points.
Q1 Choose a country and name three things you know about it. Q2 Which place you visited do you like most? Q3 Where did you go on your last holiday? Q4 Where do you want to visit next? Q5 What did Lingling say when she saw the photos in London? Q6 What happened to Penny in the UK? Q7 What tips does Penny give about cultural differences? Q8 Say three things about your hometown.
[Purpose] Review the whole unit through a game and let every student speak.
Step 3 Check it
Students finish the three questions of "Check it" by themselves: What did I learn? What was my favourite part? What do I need to work on? Then some students share their answers.
[Purpose] Help students think about their own learning of the unit.
Step 4 Let's explore: Famous travellers
1. T shows the pictures of Zhang Qian and Marco Polo and asks what students know about them.
2. Students read the text and answer the questions: Why were Zhang Qian's trips important? How long did Marco Polo stay in China? What do you think of them?
3. T explains the new words with the map of the Silk Road, then students read the text after the recording.
[Purpose] Extend the topic to history and culture and train the reading skill.
Step 5 Summary and Homework
T and students sum up the whole unit. Homework: finish the exercise book, and tell a family member about Zhang Qian or Marco Polo.
[Purpose] Consolidate the unit and connect learning with life.
