小作文:
Dear Peter,
I would like to offer my apology for not being able to teach you to make Chinese knots this Saturday.
The reason why I won’t be available at that time is that my grandfather fell ill suddenly the other day and my family are taking turns to take care of him in the hospital. So I have to stay with him that day. To make up for it, I was wondering if we could meet another day.
Once again, I feel terribly sorry for what I have done. I sincerely hope you can understand my situation and accept my apology.
Yours,
Li Hua
读后续写:
Paragraph 1:
Stressed and worried, I turned to my teacher for help. I poured out my anxiety, explaining that my partner Jake was in hospital and I knew nothing about his part of the project. My teacher patted my shoulder gently and offered lots of practical suggestions. She said it was normal to feel under great pressure when facing something new, and she was confident that I could deal with the challenge. Her warm words drove away my fear and lit up my heart. I made up my mind not to give up.
Paragraph 2:
With the teacher’s guidance, I threw myself into the project. I spent all my spare time reading the notes Jake had left behind and searching for related materials. Whenever I met puzzling problems, I turned to my teacher for advice. Gradually, I got familiar with the work. Several weeks later, I successfully presented our project. I went to the hospital to tell Jake the good news. We chatted happily for a while. I realized true growth lies in taking responsibility bravely when unexpected difficulties come.

第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Must-Read Environmental Books
Silent Spring (1962)
Written by Rachel Carson, Silent Spring has been described as a landmark work of environmental writing. It focuses on the effects of pesticides (杀虫剂的影响) on the environment, especially DDT, which was finally outlawed in 1972. The book led to a change in the United States’ pesticide policy (政策) and played a key role in the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a governmental organization in the US.
The End of Nature (1989)
The End of Nature describes the relationship between nature and humans. It expresses the idea that nature has now been influenced by humans in every way. According to author (作者) Bill McKibben, the idea of wilderness is lost, and nature is no longer intact (未受影响的). McKibben says that we need to change how we view and interact with nature.
Braiding Sweetgrass (2013)
Braiding Sweetgrass, written by Robin Wall Kimmerer, looks at the relationship between humans and the land. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Kimmerer ties lessons she learned from her culture and history to Western society’s view of plants and tries to show the importance plants and animals have in our world. Braiding Sweetgrass won the 2014 Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award (SONWA).
The Uninhabitable Earth (2019)
This book by David Wallace-Wells provides a close look at how we treat the Earth and how our actions will shape both our own future and that of the planet. The Uninhabitable Earth looks ahead to the year 2100 and states that present actions will not be enough to avoid the effects of climate (气候) change. Its opening line is quite telling: “It is worse, much worse, than you think.”
21. Which book led to the creation of the EPA?
A. Silent Spring.
B. The End of Nature.
C. Braiding Sweetgrass.
D. The Uninhabitable Earth.

Following your passion (热爱) in life might not always be the popular choice but it is the best choice. This is a belief that David Marnah has instilled (逐渐灌输) in his three sons: Jesse, Francis, and Lord. Living in Ghana, most young boys their ages choose to play football if interested in sports. For these three teens, however, swimming is the best.
David, a football coach, often gets asked why he didn’t encourage his boys to follow his sport of choice. But for this loving father, this choice was an easy one to make — and it all originates from a sincere wish for his children to be themselves.
Having full support from their parents, these 14-, 13-, and 11-year-old boys have become quite impressive swimmers. The three of them train as part of the swimming club called GH Dolphins.
While they each love the sport itself, they also have their own reasons for being as passionate as they are about it. Jesse, the oldest, is driven by the idea of making swimming a more popular choice for others in Ghana. Francis, the middle child, dreams of one day traveling to compete with athletes in other countries. For the youngest child, Lord, his love comes from watching his brothers fall in love with the sport.
“I train with the boys every time, and you should see how determined they are,” Bernard Morrison, their swim coach, said. “The boys are talented and have unique individual strengths. They have it in them to succeed, and I am excited to be part of their beginning.”
David is more than happy to cheer them on every step of the way. In fact, he doesn’t hesitate (犹豫) to change his plans in order to make sure he never misses any of their national competitions or training classes. David said, “If they see my presence and know I’m supporting them — I believe it helps them greatly to get over challenges and come out on top.”
24. What does the underlined part “this choice” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. David’s sons’ choice to take up a sport.
B. David’s sons’ choice to follow in his steps.

C. To compete internationally. D. To impress his brothers.
26. How did Bernard sound in paragraph 5?
A. Humorous. B. Confused. C. Positive. D. Curious.
27. How does David show his support for his boys?
A. He shares in their troubles. B. He plans for their training.
C. He records their competitions. D. He shows up for their activities.

As the weather begins to become cold and clear, and tree leaves turn from green to gold, brown and orange, many outdoor lovers and travelers around New England, USA, may be likely to stop and take the perfect fall foliage (叶子) photo to post on social media (社交媒体). But one town in Vermont is asking people to stop using their private land for taking photos of the beautiful yearly scenery.
Sleepy Hollow Farm, near Woodstock, attracts leaf-lovers from all around, but local people Michael Doten and Amy Robb said it has become too much to deal with. “The road is filled with cars and walkers. I can’t even get to my home,” Robb said.
And both believe social media is the driving force behind the flood of attention. “All of a sudden we just saw this huge increase in the number of people coming,” Doten said.
“They are walking on the grass to take their photos,” Robb said. “We certainly have a large number of drones (无人遥控飞机) that come by as well, and we ask them not to fly their drones over us and on the land.”
“It’s a private place,” Doten added. “I have been asked, ‘Where’s the parking area? Where are the bathrooms? Where’s the restaurant?’ There’s none of those here.”
Nearby locals also pushed the town to pass a rule that closes certain roads from mid-September to late October, during the peak foliage season, effectively keeping tourists away from the area. The locals have also hired (雇用) police officers to manage the temporary road closures (临时封路) and increased signs in the area. “The road was not designed for large cars or two-way traffic,” said police officer Ryan Palmer.
The locals have said they’re not trying to gatekeep the area, but rather manage the arrival of large numbers of newcomers. And they have offered different choices that are open to the public for fall foliage viewing. “There are a lot of other beautiful places and drives in Vermont,” Doten said. “And that’s really why we encourage people to go there.”
28. What was Amy Robb’s problem?
A. She could not get home easily.
B. She could not deal with the cold.
C. She was not a good photographer.
D. She was troubled by falling leaves.
29. Why did Michael Doten mention the questions in paragraph 5?
A. To explain his work. B. To express his regret.
C. To share his knowledge. D. To show his dissatisfaction.
30. What did Ryan Palmer think about the road-closure rule?
A. It was necessary. B. It was impossible.
C. It may lower daily costs. D. It may bring heavy traffic.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. A town says no to drones B. Exploring the beauty of a town
C. Traveling like a local in a town D. A town manages unwanted visitors

If the term “renewable energy” brings to mind a sea of solar panels (太阳能电池板), you’re not alone. It’s becoming more and more common to collect energy from the sun and wind. But solar and wind power have one big problem: the sun only shines during the day; wind comes and goes; there are very few places where wind is constant enough to produce electricity. Ocean waves, however, crash onto shore morning, noon and night, making them ideal for producing energy around the clock. Now scientists are figuring out (弄明白) just how much energy waves could offer.
The first step to creating wave power is finding out the best place to position those energy converters (转换器). To work this out, scientists Joao Morim Nascimento and Nick Cartwright from Griffith University used a computer model named SWAN (Simulating Waves Nearshore). SWAN predicts (预测) the intensity (强度) and distribution (分布) of ocean-wave energy. To achieve this, it takes into account factors such as wind conditions, seafloor features and interactions between different waves.
The model helped the team find “hotspots”, places with what Cartwright describes as an “abundance (大量) of wave energy.” “There’s more than enough natural energy there in the ocean,” he says. “The challenge is to collect and convert enough of it into usable electricity.” Waves constantly strike the converters. The hardware may also experience some extreme weather. Huge storm waves can damage the converters, Cartwright says. He also adds that seawater gradually breaks down metal components (部件).
There’s no question that finding new sources of renewable energy is good for the environment. Less pollution and fewer greenhouse gases are good for people, plants and animals. “From the vast resources of the ocean, wave energy has the potential to make a huge contribution towards our clean energy needs of the future,” Nascimento says. But he adds, “It needs to be done in a sustainable (可持续的) way, in harmony with the environment.”
32. What is the main advantage of ocean wave energy?
A. It takes up no land space. B. It requires very few places.
C. It can be produced nonstop. D. It costs less than solar power.
33. What do we know about SWAN?
A. It analyzes more than ocean waves.
B. It increases wave energy.
C. It uses an AI model for predictions.
D. It works with ocean converters.
34. What is the biggest difficulty in developing wave energy?
A. Finding the best spots for converters. B. Keeping converters from being damaged.
C. Measuring the amount of wave energy. D. Reducing the cost of making converters.
35. What is Nascimento’s attitude toward exploring new energies?
A. Worried about its future. B. Fully excited about it.
C. Mostly uninterested in it. D. Careful but positive about it.

There is something magical about exploring the great outdoors and hiking. Whether you’re a seasoned or new hiker, hiking offers advantages for your body, mind and spirit.
Increase physical fitness
Hiking is an excellent way to improve your overall fitness. Although other forms of exercise are great for your health, hiking has unique advantages that can’t be produced by a running machine. 36
Improve mental well-being (心理健康)
37 Spending time in nature, including hiking, can help lift your spirits, increase your self-confidence and sometimes reduce anxiety. The mix of physical activity, fresh air and the calming effects of nature can have a strong effect on your mental well-being.
Strengthen social connections
Whether you go on a hike with friends or join a hiking group, the shared experiences can be highly advantageous and can create wonderful shared memories. Hiking is hard. 38 So invite a friend or join a local hiking group, and experience the happiness of connecting with others while exploring nature.
Improve cognitive function (认知功能)
Doing physical activity in nature activates the brain, leading it to improve focus, creativity and problem-solving skills. Research showed that spending time in nature can improve cognitive function. 39 A drop in spending time in nature and in physical activity can possibly cause a cognitive decline (下降).
Develop environmental awareness (意识)
Exploring paths, forests and mountains can help you connect to nature and develop a greater understanding of the need to protect the environment. Keep in mind a few things while hiking — being careful about creating fires, treating wildlife with care and making sure to bring things with you in order not to litter. 40

It was a cold Monday morning. I and my partner Jake had been preparing for an important school project for nearly one month. We discussed plans after class every day and divided our work properly. Everything was going smoothly. We both believed we could get a good grade.
Then something unexpected happened. I was waiting for Jake at the school gate to discuss our project when his mother called me. Word came that Jake suffered from a serious illness and had to stay in hospital for several weeks. I froze at the news. Without Jake, I would have to finish the whole project all by myself. I walked back to my classroom with a heavy heart.
The next day, I took some fruit and went to the hospital to visit Jake. He looked weak in bed. We chatted happily for a while. I told him not to worry about our project and have a good rest. But the moment I left the hospital, worries flooded into my mind. I knew little about the part of work Jake was responsible for. The big project was far beyond my ability. I was under great pressure those days and even wanted to give up.
