When Jefferson Early Learning Center opened in Houston in 2022,school officials started receiving calls from
angry residents ()It wasn't because of the increase in traffic or the noise from loud children. It was the wild
tall grass."Residents wanted to know something:Why aren't you cutting the lawn ()Why aren't you keeping
the grounds?said Hilda Rodriguez,an official working for the Alief Independent School District, home to
Jefferson.
Although Jefferson's neighbors didn't know it,the tall grass around the early learning center was part of a
larger project to solve climate-related problems in an area where there is a heavy flood nearly every two years and
the number of days at or above 35C has increased greatly over the past 25 years.
Jefferson's designers focused on the land around the center. They chose to bring back much of the ground's
local grasslands and wetlands, creating a habitat (for more than 200 kinds of plants and animals. That kind
of habitat is especially good for an area at risk of climate change events, such as the heavy rains that often hit the
city."By putting in grasses,we can now take in three to four times as much water as if we had freshly cut grass,"
said Jefferson's designer Melissa Turnbaugh.
Alief officials have already noticed the advantages of the unusual use of the school land.During the school
year, students can walk on paths through the grassland and learn about plants and flowers. The local plants can deal
with Houston's really hot summers. This saves work, time, and money for Alief's care and repair team, which
seldom needs to cut or water the grass at Jefferson.
"We're cooling the neighborhood,"said Turnbaugh."I think we're being good neighbors."Over time,
Jefferson's neighbors have realized that. The calls have stopped."Once they understood,it became very clear to
them that this was meaningful, said Rodriguez.
24.According to paragraph 1,what did the residents complain about?
A.Noise pollution.
B.Traffic jams.
C.Untidy grounds.
D.Wildlife threats.
25.How can Jefferson's grass be good for its students?
A.By letting them play outside
B.By making them good neighbors
C.By helping them pay less for school.
D.By allowing them to connect with nature.
26.What did Jefferson want to create with its grassy land?
A.A habitat for special wildlife.
B.An environment-friendly space.
C.An educational center for everyone.
D.An excellent model for other schools.
27.What is the best title for the passage?
A.A School's Wild Grass:A Problem or a Solution
B.A Climate-Friendly School:How It Was Built
C.Jefferson Early Learning Center:A Story of Change
D.Houston's Wetlands:Why the City Needs Them

We are now well into the digital age,and in recent years, many companies have developed modern retro
)technology, including MP3 players.MP3 players were popular during the late 1990s and early 2000s,as people
used them to play music.
Back then, the Internet was not yet as dependable as it is today and people had to have a cell phone for
communication,an MP3 player to store and play music,a computer for work, and more. However, the smartphone
changed all that as it became the all-in-one device that a person needs.Because of the smartphone, companies
developed apps for different purposes, with music streaming forever changed by the Swedish company,Spotify,
which introduced the app in 2008.Thanks to Spotify, users no longer need to copy their favorite songs into their
MP3 players or iPods.
Even though music streaming apps are becoming more and more popular, there are companies in the industry
that believe technology like MP3 players is necessary. One such company is Sony. The technology company is
developing a new MP3 player model, known as the Digital Audio Player (DAP).Companies like FiiO are also
developing their modern MP3 players.These MP3 players all have Wi-Fi connectivity,Bluetooth,and more.They
also have large storage capacities (and allow users to add microSD cards if they need more space.
Because of these companies, retro fans can continue to enjoy the experiences MP3 players bring, which they
share with the rest of the world. The community is growing, and many people share the same dissatisfaction with
music streaming popularized by Spotify and the like. Some argue that music streaming is losing its way because of
a large number of podcasts and audiobooks, while some simply want to go back to the"good old days"when they
picked up their MP3 players, listened to music, and shut out the world.
28.What made MP3 players go out of fashion?
A.The rise of smartphones.
B.The growth of the Internet.
C.The popularity of iPods.
D.The drop in CD sales.
29.What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A.Sony leads the way in producing MP3 players.
B.DAP enjoys great popularity all over the world.
C.Sony still produces MP3 players for elderly users.
D.Modern MP3 players come with advanced technology.
30.Why do some retro fans go after MP3 players?
A.They have a special love for old objects.
B.They like high sound quality.
C.They want a focused music experience.
D.They prefer a cheaper device.
31.What is the text mainly about?
A.The influence of technology on music
B.The changes in music listening habits.
6
C.The comeback of MP3 players.
D.The popularity of music streaming apps.

Researchers at the University of Exeter in England have crafted a device that employs artificial intelligence
(AI)to detect (Asian wasps )AI refers to the ability of computers to learn from experiences and carry
out tasks swiftly that would typically require a large amount of time from humans.
Asian wasps are considered an invasive (species, showing that they are not native to the UK and can
threaten our ecosystem--the environment and its living organisms. These wasps feed on local insects and pose a
significant threat to honey bees--a single wasp can kill up to 50 honey bees in a day.
The innovative (system, named VespAI,uses a wet sponge cloth with a liquid that draws wasps.Once
the wasps are drawn in,an automatic camera takes pictures of them. The aI then analyzes the photos to determine
whether the insect is an Asian wasp or a European wasp, which is a native species.
If an Asian wasp is spotted,a message is sent right away to the researcher's phone or computer.VespAI acts as
an early-warning system, making it possible to detect any Asian wasp that may have entered a new area of the UK.
Its high precision (helps authorities respond quickly to follow the wasp, find their nests, and get rid of
them before they can reproduce(繁殖).
There is growing concern among experts that Asian wasps may have made a lasting home in the UK rather
than being only transient or accidental arrivals.Currently, the UK's way of dealing with Asian wasps depends on
people seeing them, recognizing them, and reporting them. However, many of these reports turn out to be other
kinds of insects, which is not a very effective way to deal with the situation.
Dr.Thomas O'Shea-Wheller,who worked on VespAI,said this new system won't mistake other insects for
Asian wasps or miss them when they come around.VespAI has been tested on the island of Jersey and will be tried
in other places this year.
32.What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on?
A.VespAI's design and operation.
B.The effectiveness of wasp traps.
C.VespAI's influence on ecosystem.
D.Traditional wasp detecting methods.
33.Why is VespAI described as an"early-warning system"?
A.It warns people of the danger of wasp stings.
B.It helps find Asian wasps before they spread widely.
C.It predicts when Asian wasps will reproduce.
D.It tells researchers where honey bees live.
34.What does the underlined word"transient"'mean in paragraph 5?
A.First-class.
B.Short-term.
C.Dangerous.
D.Regular
35.Which statement would probably Dr.Thomas agree with?
A.VespAI will help manage wasp invasions.
B.VespAI requires continuous human control
C.The current reporting system is highly effective.
D.The current methods fail to recognize Asian wasps.

Many high school seniors feel anxious about the college application essay ()They feel their lives
are too ordinary to create a story that will impress admissions officers.36 It only needs to show their personal
growth in a true way, based on everyday moments.
I once worked with a boy who had no idea what to write about.Family?Favorite subject? He kept silent until I
suggested,"Hobbies?He shyly said,"I like boxing."Then his essay unfolded,not about boxing itself,but about
self-discipline and resilience ()qualities that any college would admire. So look into the things that shape
you.37
Some students try to catch attention by writing their essays in unconventional forms, such as a poem or a play
Most still follow the traditional storytelling model:a hook ()a story, and a lesson learned.38 For
example, the rough edges and the pleasant smell of her father's handmade furniture inspired one girl to become an
engineer. The magic is in the details and emotional depth.
As a writing tutor,I was hung up on language rules at first.Should I help my students stick to"standard
English",or let them write the way they naturally speak--even if that includes informal expressions?39 It's
also about expressing ideas naturally and making connections with readers. It doesn't hurt to tell a humorous
childhood incident in a light, conversational tone
40 Essay writing teaches students to express themselves with precision through rethinking ideas, refining
language, and rewriting drafts.Through many rounds of rewriting, they will uncover deeper insights and create a
story only they can tell.
A.But a powerful essay doesn't require a dramatic story
B.Whatever the form,an essay stands out for its story.
C.After all,I preferred a formal writing style.
D.Once a topic is found, the essay practically writes itself.
E.A great essay eventually takes form by making improvements.
F.That's why they try to make up interesting stories.
G.I soon realized writing isn't just about language
