About half of the students at the school have developed a daily reading habit.”
Similar changes are underway in other parts of China. In Daguan County, Yunnan Province, the local library has introduced e-reading devices and digital services for children. Digital technology not only offers chances to more children, but also opens a wider world of knowledge for them.

Happy birthday to the Qinghai-Xizang Railway! Located on the “roof of the world (世界屋脊)”, the 1,956-kilometer railway celebrated its 20th anniversary (周年) this July.
Travel between the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and the rest of China used to be difficult. In the 1950s, camels (骆驼) took three or four months to carry goods from Qinghai to Lhasa, Xizang. Now, trains can do it in 48 hours.
The railway has helped business grow. Near Xining Railway Station, a market for caterpillar fungus (冬虫夏草) has developed. In the past, business people had to drive for days to Xizang to collect the herbs (中草药). Now, people in Xizang can bring the herbs by train, and packages from the market can reach many parts of China the next day, Xinhua reported.
Lhasa West Station has changed too. The area used to be open and with dirt roads. Now, it’s a modern transport center with 11 lines that carry cars, home appliances (家电), vegetables, fruits and many other goods (商品). Local products, such as apples from Nyingchi and Shannan, are also sold to Nepal by rail.
To protect the local environment, many parts of the railway are built on bridges so that wild animals can pass safely below. Today, the number of Tibetan antelopes (藏羚羊) in Xizang has grown from about 70,000 in the 1990s to more than 300,000. “Now, you can often see them running alongside the railway,” Hao Baojun, who has worked on the line for 40 years, told Xinhua.

Have you ever thought about buying fresh farm vegetables from 500 kilometres away just on your phone? In China, this is not a magical story anymore. It is common daily life in thousands of “internet villages”.
An internet village is a rural (农村的) place. Villagers here sell their local products through online shops and live-streaming. ____46____ They bring new ideas and mobile phones back to their hometowns and start online business. For example, in Beihao Village of Hainan, live-streamers sell local pineapples and coconuts to buyers across the whole country. In some villages in Zhejiang, farmers grow tea with cameras set up nearby. ____47____
These internet villages are developing very fast. This fast development brings great changes to local people’s lives. First, villagers get more orders from online buyers and have more stable income (稳定的收入). ____48____ Local young people no longer leave their hometowns to look for work in big cities. Besides, local governments offer great support. They build better roads and high-speed railways and improve online payment systems. With these conditions, a small village with only hundreds of people can sell its products to millions of buyers online.
However, not all rural areas can become internet villages. ____49____ The villages need good local products to sell online. More importantly, they need young people who are willing to stay and develop their hometowns. Experts give useful advice. They suggest villages train local people to be good live-streamers first, instead of building expensive equipment (设备) blindly.

My grandma always tells me stories about her childhood life. She often says life today is totally different from what it was sixty years ago. I can feel the great changes of the world from her words and my own life experience.
When Grandma was a little girl, her family was very poor. There was no electric (电动的) fan or TV in her house. In hot summer, she could only cool herself with a hand fan. The roads in her village were muddy (泥泞的). When it rained, walking outside became really hard. People mainly went out on foot or by old bike. It took hours to get to the nearest town.
Now everything has changed. My hometown has wide and clean roads. Buses and electric bikes are everywhere. Many families even have private cars. We have air-conditioners (空调) to keep cool in summer and warm in winter. We can watch TV, surf the Internet and talk with friends far away online every day.
Grandma says these amazing changes come with the development of our society. We no longer worry about food and clothes, and we have more chances to learn and travel. I feel lucky to live in such a great era (时代). I will study hard to make our life better in the future.

The Biggest Change I’ve Made
Looking back on the past two years, the biggest change I have made is becoming more confident and outgoing.
In Grade Seven, I was shy and afraid to speak in class. I even avoided joining any activities. Last term, our class needed a volunteer to give an English speech. My teacher encouraged me to have a try. Although I was nervous, I spent a week preparing for it. On the day of the speech, my hands were shaking, but I still finished it bravely. To my surprise, my classmates cheered for me.
From then on, I have become more active in class and made many new friends. I realize that change begins with courage. As long as we dare to step forward, we can become better versions of ourselves.

In a reading corner at Qixi Township Central School, some students are sitting with tablets (平板电脑) in their hands. Instead of playing games, they are using an AI-powered helper to enjoy classic novels.
The school is located in a mountainous area in Zhejiang Province. Most students there are left-behind children. Their grandparents take care of them while their parents work away from home. For years, the school’s library had only a few hundred books, and many of them were out of date or not suitable for young readers. Therefore, the students had few chances to find quality books.
Changes began about a year ago with a digital reading program at village schools across the province. Started in November 2025, the program has provided smart devices (设备) to schools with fewer than 100 students. Now, students in grades four to six at Qixi can use these tools,
“Digital reading helps solve the problem of not having enough reading materials (材料),” Wang Wenhui, a teacher at the school, said. “With the smart tools, we can choose better books for kids, encouraging them to read more. About half of the students at the school have developed a daily reading habit.”
Similar changes are underway in other parts of China. In Daguan County, Yunnan Province, the local library has introduced e-reading devices and digital services for children. In Guizhou, a digital platform (平台) offers more than one million e-books. Everyone can read them on computers or smartphones for free.
